3. The Secret Life Of A Female Magician By Romany
--------------------------------------------
Message from Romany Romany (UK)
New
magic bestseller memoir Spun Into Gold - The Secret Life
of a Female Magician by Romany.
Have
you got your copy of the new magic memoir bestseller? With
148 5-star reviews on Amazon combined sites, this is the
raw and honest story of how Romany went from selling telephones
to travelling the world as a headline act. One review said:
"I absolutely loved this book. Coming to this from
a strong interest in the performance of magic I thought
that this book would be centred on how someone succeeds
in this 'business'.
This
book provides fantastic insights on this subject, but is
much more profound in its message. This book is about how
one faces limiting beliefs, assumptions and thought patterns,
follows ones heart and intuition and finds true happiness
and fulfilment. Thoroughly recommended!" Anthony Owens
called it "Bold, brave and beautiful."

This book is not just for magicians but fascinating for
everyone. Romany tells me that her mother-in-law has sold
the books to a hundred of her friends!

4. S.A.M. Preview Of January 2019 M-U-M
-----------------------------------------------
Message by Lindsay Smith (US)
SAM's January cover features two of M-U-M readers' favorite
characters, Basil the Baffling and Chloe, and perhaps a
third, their creator Alan Wassilak. As M-U-M Editor Alan
Howard points out in his column, the delightful cartoon
strip has been a mainstay in the magazine for 35 years!
The inside cover article by Frank Dudgeon, titled "Comics,
Magic, Puppets, and Alan Wassilak" brings Alan's amazing
story to life, much as Alan brings life to Basil and Chloe.
Alan is nothing if not creative - whether it's with pen
(or brush) and ink, or just a pen. Yep, he's a writer too
. . . and a performer, a collector of marionettes, and more.
"George Parker: A Magician for the 21st Century"
is the title of this month's feature interview, conducted
by Larry Hass. Larry notes that George is a top-flight,
extremely successful corporate magician based in Amsterdam
who has been reluctant to speak openly about what he does
and the magic he performs along the way. This article is
a fascinating exception. Enjoy your time here.
"Micro-Metamorphosis" is a great George Parker
close-up, apparently impromptu coin routine, with 10 illustrations,
that is utterly astonishing to people, excerpted from his
book Performing Magic with Impact.
National President Ron Ishimaru gives us a lot to reflect
on as we approach (race into?) 2019. In his "From the
President's Desk" column, he explains that "to
advance the art of magic we have to study and understand
not only the history of magic, but the history of the world
that influenced the magic at that time." He encourages
us to read Dariel Fitzkee's Showmanship for Magicians, written
in 1943, which is still a valuable reference today. That's
excellent advice as we begin the new year.
In keeping with my theory that our Dean knows everybody;
Dean George Schindler uses "The Dean's Diary"
to write about his good friend Frank Garcia and the fun
they had behind the counter at Max Holden's magic shop.
Their favorite customer was Milbourne Christopher, and Frank
always had a gag ready for him when he showed up.
Brad Jacobs has been a past national president of the SAM,
convention organizer for the SAM for 20 years, and has been
president of FISM North America since 2011. Another way
of saying that: Brad knows more than a thing or two about
magic as a performing art, entertainment, and creating the
idea behind the message. When the idea behind the message
touches your audience, and the "wow" factor kicks
in, you're making your performance unique. He explains his
thinking in a "Guest Editorial".
After nine years of reviewing tricks, books, and DVDs, and
five years of writing his "Cheats & Deceptions"
column, Antonio Cabral has decided to close out his tenure
to focus on other projects. Appropriately, he closes out
his final column with his thoughts on closers, and the ideal
time/trick to end your close-up set. To that end, check
out Cabral's First Rule of Conjuring.
Perhaps unknown to many readers, Houdini's Whirlwind of
Colors was one of the very last magic effects presented
by him. The effect was also known as Houdini's Giant Bowl
Mystery. David Haversat, in his "Magical Masterpieces
& More" column, features this effect and traces
its history.
David Corsaro writes about real world marketing advice in
his "No Smoke, No Mirrors" column. This month
he focuses on the relevance of online video marketing in
an interview with Xavior Spade, who has an extremely successful
online video presence. There's great information here if
you're creating video content.
Unlike Antonio Cabral's column where he writes about closers,
Brian Lees' column, "Taking the Stage," is all
about openers. Between these two columns, all you need to
concern yourself with is the middle. As Brian writes, "The
waves in your show, regardless how well rehearsed and planned,
will not be that entertaining unless you capture the audience's
attention first." Now go work on your middles.
In his "On Second Thought
" column, Paul
Draper writes about performing for one of three audiences
when taking the stage as mentalists: Those Who Believe,
Those Who Do Not Believe, and Those Who Are Unsure, i.e.,
skeptics. More importantly, he considers the attributes
of each, how to approach them, and the advantages and disadvantages
of each.
If you want to be on television and do a show, then you
can be on television and do a show. That's the message that
Cinde and Dal Sanders impart in their "TV or Not TV"
column. Not only that, they offer a half-dozen ways to create
your own TV show to achieve that goal. Although it may seem
like an overwhelming endeavor, it may not be as hard as
you think. Cinde and Dal's suggestions offer a great start.
Kien Meng Wee, better known as Mr. Bottle to M-U-M readers
and his Singapore and other Asian audiences, explains how
he cross-sells his magic services and offers themed services
in this month's "Magic in a Bottle" column. This
month's contributor is Jay Huang from Taiwan who incorporates
magic into a balloon sculpting routine.
One of the first regular "go to" columns in M-U-M
is "Shop Talk," where our well-posted reviewers
offer their honest evaluations and recommendations, always
with the intention of providing you with purchasing decisions
on new effects that could fit perfectly into your act, or
ideas in print or on video that can help you "up your
game".
If it's technical, magical, and applicable, M-U-M's "Tech
Tricks" columnist and SAM's resident tech wizard Bruce
Kalver undoubtedly knows about it. Thankfully, he's willing
to share his finds with our readers. This month he continues
with the magic app kit he mentioned last month and highlights
four more effects from that set. He suggests one that he
says is "so powerful, it could be the finale of your
close-up performance".
David Goodsell continues his research into "The S.A.M.
History Project" with information he's uncovered about
Robert Ankele that he refers to as "the mysterious
Mr. Ankele". Although he attended all four of the early
organizational meetings about the founding of the SAM and
joined as a charter member, things changed later. What actually
happened puzzles David Goodsell then and now. He asks if
we really want to know.
Norman Beck got two lessons recently - same time, same place,
same people. He explains what happened and what he learned
in this month's "Thoughts on Thinking" column.
He shares what he learns, both positive and negative, which
always makes for interesting reading. That plus his monthly
"joke," of course.
In addition to these features and regular columnists there's
more, including Alan Howard's "Preshow" column,
pages of "Assembly Reports" from around the world,
a "Magic IQ" quiz from PNP Dick Bowman, the "Good
Cheer List", "Broken Wands", "Magic
WORDoodles", Number Bubbles", and, of course,
the latest Basil the Baffling & Chloe strip. Happy New
Year to all from the staff and columnists of M-U-M.

5. The Magic Word Podcast - Bill Ragsdale On Lockpicking
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Bill
Ragsdale on Lockpicking and John Scarne this week on The
Magic Word Podcast
While
I was in Havana at MagiCuba, I got to record several conversations,
the first of which is being released this week. We chat
with Bill Ragsdale who teaches a class on lockpicking to
members of The Academy of Magical Arts (The Magic Castle)
from time to time. We chat about websites you can visit
to learn to pick locks without having to attend his classes.
But as we were talking, I found out that Bill is also the
world's foremost authority on the legendary card man, John
Scarne. So Bill shared several stories and background on
Scarne's life.
You
can watch a video of John Scarne on gambling, see some photos
of John Scarne and Bill Ragsdale, get some links to lockpicking
videos, read the blog, listen online to the podcast and
download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/466-bill-ragsdale
And
please be sure to click the Amazon.com banner at the bottom
of the website to support The Magic Word Podcast through
their Affiliate Program. At no cost to you other than clicking
the banner, a portion of all your purchases on Amazon.com
will benefit us. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

6. Just Say When - John Carey #25
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main
The
Stop trick is a classic of card magic. There are literally
hundreds of methods for this plot in print. Some are exceptional.
My approach to the effect is a somewhat unusual application
of a superb Brother John Hamman idea. It's simple, impromptu
and very direct.
From
a shuffled deck in use have a card freely selected, say
Five of Hearts and have it signed. Swing cut the deck and
have it returned. Secure a left little-finger break above
it as the deck is assembled. "This experiment is not
about me, but all about you Jack. You see, as you've signed
a card, that gives it significance to you. I will endeavour
to locate your card, but I think I will need some help."
After
the above monologue cut about half the cards above your
break to the table. Then cut to the break and drop that
packet on top. Deal off the top card of the remaining cards
face-down to your left and drop the other cards on top of
the tabled cards and pick them up. Carry out the same triple
cut as above once more; this time of course it's a fair
cut and no breaks. Deal off another card face-down to your
right.
Hand
the deck to your helper and have him start dealing cards
one at a time into a face-down pile until he gets some kind
of intuitive sense to stop. When he does, have him place
the next card face-down between the two tabled cards you
cut to. The deck is set aside.
"Jack,
let's see how I did. A seven of Clubs and a Queen of Hearts
(or whatever). Not even close! But you remember what I said
at the start about this not being about me and being all
about you? You see sir, you are just doing what everybody
else in the world is trying to do and find themselves!!!"
The
card they stopped at is turned over and revealed to be their
signed selection.
As
the above closing spiel is said you will execute Brother
Hamman's sandwich switch, from his routine The Signed Card.
Pick up the face-down selection on your left and hold it
at the left fingertips. Pick up the right-hand card and
hold it facedown at the fingertips too. Bring both hands
towards the card your helper stopped at and scoop it up
between your two cards, so that your left-hand card goes
on top.
Immediately,
without any stalling slide out the bottom card of the packet
and turn it face-up and place it on top of the packet, showing
an x card. Smoothly continue by sliding out the bottom card
and flipping that card face-up, showing another x card.
Place it face-up beneath the packet and drop the sandwich
onto the table, showing one face-down card between two x
cards. Remove the x cards and discard them. Focus full attention
on the card they supposedly stopped at and bring the trick
home revealing their signed card.

9. Gathering A Crowd At Festivals - #514 - Kyle Peron

The
other day I had a nice discussion with several folks on
the topic of working festivals and fairs. The question that
kept coming up was something like this:
"Most
entertainers working a fair do something that draws the
crowd in. Since people who are already in motion walking
by tend to stay in motion, you have to do something that
gets them to
stop and take notice. What kinds of things have you tried
that have been successful in drawing a crowd? Just as important,
what doesn't work?"
It
was a great question and one I am sure many of us face not
only in the fair and festival markets but also in other
various markets as well.
First
off, in every festival I am working, I get paid to be an
entertainer there. I am not busking so this does make a
huge difference for me in my approach and style of how I
draw crowds.
As
a paid entertainer, one can work with the fair or festival
in getting them to market you effectively. Do not ever assume
they are going to do it for you. YOU must be proactive and
make it easy for them. I do this through an advertising
and marketing kit I send out the client when the event is
booked. It has posters, web images for their site, bio text
written down, press releases they can use, 8.5 by 11 photos
that can be reproduced, my logo etc. I also tell them how
this information can be used and why it benefits them and
their event.
By
doing so, I already am drawing interest in my show before
I am ever at the event. I also make sure my show is listed
in the program, on the website and any signage that may
be at the festival event. By taking an active approach and
assisting them with the process, you can do this easily
and it works wonders for marketing as well as generating
interest in your show.
Now
I also use a Show Time clock sign. I have this posted on
the stage and it clearly will state when the next show start
time is as well as it is branded for my show and performance.
This gets placed on or near the stage when I get to the
event and so folks walking by know exactly what is going
on and when.
Now
the big key for me is to always make sure the festival gives
ample time for set up between acts. In most fairs and festivals,
you will NOT have the luxury of having the stage area to
yourself. You usually will be sharing with other acts. You
want to be sure you have enough time for the act in front
to load off and for you to load on. I make sure this is
in my contract so
there is plenty of time without me being rushed.
Now
what this does is that my equipment being out there on stage
starts to draw attention. I mean illusions and magic props
are just eye candy for people and I get my props out there
quickly so it starts to work for me immediately.
I
then always have full control over my music (also in my
contract). I use an iPod and have play lists set up for
preshow music. I start this about 15 minutes prior to the
show itself and the music is music that builds each show.
Music draws attention and people are curious about it. At
a festival, music cues lay people that something is about
to happen.
I
then also will have the playlist set up with a professional
voice over tracks stating "show will start in 5 mins"
and another that gets played at the 2 minute time.
Before
these tracks play, I can always interrupt my preshow music
by turning the volume down and starting a classic ballyhoo.
The ballyhoo is an art form derived from side show folks.
It is the
patter and banter that gets spoken that gets interest and
lets people become curious as to what is taking place and
draws them inwards.
If
I feel I need to, I will do a ballyhoo on the stage. it
is a simple patter script I have done for years but can
be changed on the fly based on who is in the audience or
whom is walking by. It works great but you have to work
at it.
What
I also do a lot is I book a pro level package that offers
them strolling magic. They end up paying for it, but I make
it so easy for them to say yes. I always will stroll before
my shows
and this works as a wonderful way in which to advertise
my stage performances.
I
also always remember that 95% of the time, I know how to
run a festival and fair better than the folks running it.
Nothing against them at all. it is just a fact that most
folks trying to
run the festival may be volunteers or have not been and
worked at as many festivals as I have over the years. I
utilize this information to 1) help them out and 2) educate
them along in the
process to provide solutions that meet their needs and help
me in the long run.
The
bottom line is that I get a lot figured out, planned and
agreed upon ahead of time so that there is no worry and
I minimize unpleasant surprises on the day of the event.
With these
tips, you can generate and draw a huge crowd without having
to do so much work.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

Naathan
Phan's first love in life was, and still is, magic. He became
enamored by the art at the tender age of five when his grandfather
showed him his very first magic tricks. Although his magical
genesis may sound a bit cliché, his magic is anything
but. Naathan Phan hooks you with his Robin Williams paced
wit and humor, perfectly punctuated by his well-practiced
prestidigitation, and geared towards your audience, whatever
age(s) they may be. Phan has toured with the Masters of
Illusion live show as well as performed on The CW hit television
series, Masters of Illusion, multiple times. Aside from
being a magician, Phan also is adept at doing celebrity
impressions. Phan was also a recently featured magician
in Masters of Illusion live show at Bally's Las Vegas.

Michael Turco fell in love with the mystery of magic when
he was just five-years-old. Spending his summers just miles
from the strip in Atlantic City, Turco saw every magic show
in the area and was intent to master each trick and illusion
on his own. He has had his own show in Las Vegas at Planet
Hollywood casino and brought a little bit of Jersey to the
strip. The press describes Turco as "a natural born
talent
a true success story." Michael Turco has
been with the Masters of Illusion tour for several years
now and has appeared multiple times on the award winning
TV series Masters of Illusion on The CW Network. Michael
