Church
warden and magician charged in connection with Maids Moreton
murders
A
church warden and a magician have been charged in connection
with the Maids Moreton murders, police have said.
Benjamin
Field and magician Martyn Smith have been charged by officers
probing the deaths of 69-year-old teacher Peter Farquhar
and his Buckinghamshire neighbour Ann Moore-Martin, 83.
Mr Farquar died on October 26, 2015, and Ms Moore-Martin
passed away almost two years later on May 12, 2017.
The
two pensioners lived three houses apart in Manor Park in
the village of Maids Moreton, near Buckingham, Buckinghamshire.
Field,
28, of Wellingborough Road, Olney, was charged Tuesday night
with two counts of conspiracy to murder Ann Moore-Martin
and Peter Farquhar, one count of murder of Peter Farquhar,
one count of attempted murder of Ann Moore-Martin, two counts
of fraud and three counts of burglary.
Smith,
32, of Penhalvean, Redruth, Cornwall, was charged on the
same day with two counts of conspiracy to murder Ann Moore
Martin and Peter Farquhar, one count of murder of Peter
Farquhar, one count of attempted murder of Ann Moore-Martin,
one count of fraud, and two counts of burglary.
They
were originally arrested in connection with the investigation
on January 16 last year, but were re-arrested yesterday
morning.
Both
men will appear at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
+A
22-year-old man from Olney was also arrested on suspicion
of one count of conspiracy to defraud, one count conspiring
to commit fraud by false representation and one count of
suspicion of fraud by false representation. He has been
released under investigation.

The
open prediction is a truly fascinating card problem. The
following hands off self-working version does not adhere
to the stringent conditions of Paul Curry's original problem
posed but the tradeoff is pretty strong in my opinion.
Hand
out the deck for shuffling and upon return spread through
the deck and take out the Jokers and set them aside. Use
this time-honoured ruse to secretly note the card sixth
from the top. Let's say for the purposes of this description
it is the King of Clubs. Casually false cut the deck.
Hand
the spectator the deck and state you will make an open prediction.
Call out the King of Clubs. Ask them to deal a card face-up
to the table, followed by another then one more. Have them
deal two more and then casually get them to deal the next
card (KC) face-down for 'luck'. Request they continue dealing
faceup onto the tabled pile and deal another card face-down
on impulse. Once again get them to continue dealing face-up
cards and deal another face-down card. Have them repeat
this one more time, so that four face-down cards have been
dealt. Ask your spectator to turn their remaining cards
face-up and drop them on top of everything.
Time
misdirection will now be your friend. Comment on how you
made an open prediction at the beginning and that they shuffled
the deck. They dealt cards faceup and at four different
points they randomly dealt face-down cards. Most of that
is true! Be bold ;-)
Spread
the face-up deck and slide out the four face-down cards.
Table them and mix them around, tracking where your target
card is. Now use a simple, standard equivoque or magician's
choice to force the target card, the King of Clubs. I simply
ask them to push two cards towards me. If both are x cards
I place them aside and ask them to hand me one of the remaining
two cards. If that's an x card
I
discard it casually with the others and bring the trick
home. However, if they push the target card and an x card
towards you, discard the other two cards and have them hand
you one of their two choices. If it's an x card then casually
discard that. But of course, if it's the target card, you
push the remaining card aside without fuss and not mentioning
the dreaded death words eliminate or get rid of!
Either
which way, you remind the audience of your open prediction
and successfully conclude the mystery.

Part
of being a success at working festivals is the ability to
build relationships with the client/s and having them really
see the value that you give to them. You want to be a solutions
provider and not just an entertainer. The more problems
you can solve for them, the more your perceived value grows
in their minds.
Part
of building this relationship is having them see large crowds
at your shows and many happy and smiling patrons. They want
their festival guests to be having a great time. A large
and happy crowd reacting favorably to what you are doing
gets back to the client really fast.
So,
what are ways in which to ensure large crowds at your festival
shows? Well one is simply advertising your appearance at
the festival. Many entertainers make two assumptions when
it comes to festival advertising and promotion. They feel
like 1) it will be done entirely by the festival itself
and they will advertise your appearance there and 2) that
they are not allowed to help advertise their appearance.
Let
me talk a bit about both if I can. The first rule of thumb
is to never assume anything when it comes to working festivals.
This simply means always ask questions and always find out
the answers to questions you have.
Sometimes
festivals will indeed promote your appearance and will do
a fine job of doing so. Some will not advertise you much
at all and others may just state that a "magician"
or a "juggler" will be appearing but not state
your stage name etc.
This
is naturally going to happen as all festivals are different
and they handle advertising and promotion different as well.
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to offer
to help make their job easier by providing them with information,
photos, bios, web art, logos and
anything you feel they can utilize. By doing so, you are
showing them you are a professional, you are helping them
tremendously and you are ensuring a better chance that you
will be advertised properly.
If
you want to start to advertise yourself and your appearance
at the festival, it usually is never a problem. Just make
sure to touch base with your festival client ahead of time.
Ask them that you would like to help get the word out about
their festival and your appearance there and if that would
be OK with them.
It
is a win-win situation for them and so is usually never
a problem at all. Just always ask permission ahead of time
before you begin. In this way they know you are doing it,
can assist you with proper information and they get to see
the value you are giving to them.
One
of the best ways to advertise your appearance at the festival
is through a FREE method called online community calendars.
Many communities and municipalities have community-based
websites. These websites are geared at letting people in
their communities know about
important information.
As
a part of these community-based websites, they usually will
have a calendar of events section. These calendars are set
up in such a way that anyone can freely post events and
community events to the calendar. It is usually done through
an online form page. Just enter in your
information and click the button and you are one.
The
beauty of this is that they are free of charge and can be
done quickly. There are a lot of them and you can find them
easily by doing Google searches for "Community Calendar
(town name)" or with a keyword such as "Calendar
of Events (township)". With a little Google searching,
you can find numerous online calendars to be able to place
your event information.
It
is a quick and easy way to get your information out there
to a vast audience who usually check the calendars for things
to do for their families.

10. Actors Training for Magicians Stockholm
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tom Stone (Sweden)
Acting
skills is not something that 'magically' appear when you
need it.
Instead,
you have to practice acting techniques just as much as your
magic techniques if you want to be good at it.
But
how do you do that? How do you practice acting techniques,
if you don't know what they are?
This
is a two-day workshop where you will be guided through some
basic actor's training, like impulse training, focus, rhythm
and tempo shifting.
All
with an eye on how it relates to magic performances.
You
will learn to understand what you and your body are expressing
on stage, and how to apply acting techniques during magic
performances on stage.
Your
instructor is Leif Olberius, a trained actor and magician
who have had his own theater company.
Limited
to 8 participants.
