6. The Magic Word Podcast - John Archer
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
John
Archer is a very funny guy and he can play a mean ukulele,
too. During the recent T.A.O.M. convention here in Houston,
Texas, John was one of the featured lecturers and performers.
He stopped by my home on Thursday night for Magic and Martinis.
After he had one (or maybe two) he agreed to play a few
"ditties" on the ukulele.
The
next evening before the convention began, we sat down in
his hotel room for a proper chat as we talked about comedy,
his work touring with comedian Tim Vine in the U.K., problems
with performing "politically correct" humor today,
and much more. The first part of this week's podcast features
his ukulele playing that we recorded the previous night.
You
can watch a video of John Archer (and also a separate video
of Tim Vine), see some candid photos, listen to some product
reviews, hear the podcast online, and download the MP3 file
at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/452-john-archer
And
although it is not mentioned in this week's podcast, be
sure to check out the new Indiegogo.com campaign by Neil
McNally to raise funds for a new documentary about Doug
Henning. You can watch a video and learn more about it at:
https://bit.ly/2zqM9eY Be sure to check it out and spread
the word about this worthwhile project.

7. Lies All the Way - John Carey #19
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main
This
piece was inspired by David Williamson's fantastic Liars
Poker on his Magic Farm DVD. I wanted something within my
skill set that featured the multiple changes of cards under
spectator's hands.
There
is a simple three card set-up on top of the deck: Ace of
Clubs, followed by the Four of Hearts and then the Seven
of Spades third from the top.
False
shuffle retaining this set up on top and then swing cut
about half the deck into the left hand and as you complete
the cut, get a left little-finger break above your force
cards. Drop the left hand casually to the side as you introduce
the effect and the premise of lies and tells and all that
jazz.
Dribble
force to your break and hand the Ace to a spectator on your
left, the four to someone on their right and finally the
seven to someone even further to the right. Discard the
deck.
Invite
each person to peek at his or her cards and remember them.
Then have one of the groups gather up all three cards and
mix them as you look away.
Turn
back around and take back the cards as you urge your helpers
to form an image of their cards in their minds.
With
the faces towards you, feign concentration as you try to
pick up on any tells the people may be exhibiting. Casually
rearrange the cards into their original A, 4,7 order from
the top if they are not already in that order.
"They
say the inflections in people's voices can often give their
true thoughts away. I will show and call out each of the
cards to you guys. When I ask you if this is your card,
just say yes. I will try to discern who is telling the truth
and who is lying."
Suiting
actions to words, execute a double turnover, showing the
four of Hearts. Ask each person individually if that is
their card? They are all to say yes of course. Pause a beat
and then turn the double card back down and put the switched
in Ace of Clubs under the first spectator's hand.
Hold the packet face-down at the right long edge and execute
a fingertip frustration count, raising the face towards
the other two people, showing the seven of Spades and then
turning the hand palm up and dragging off the top card into
the left hand. Ask each person the question and they both
are to say yes like before. After a bit of deliberation
put the switched in four of Hearts under the second helper's
hand.
Tilt
the face of the final card towards you and very casually
miscall it as the Ace of Clubs and get your third spectator
to cover it with a hand. Act very confident about your decisions
and then ask each person if you got their card, right? It's
a very funny moment when they all say no!
"Ah, so much for inflections, let's use magic."
Make a magical gesture over their hands and have each person
in turn call their selections out. Then, one by one, have
each card turned over to conclude with a pretty strong triple
change into their chosen cards.
Kudos
to Mr Williamson for the inspiration.

I
think the beauty of being a magician is the ability to simply
create. I am also an artist, so this part of what we do
fascinates me. We can take nothing and create something
amazing from it. We have the ability to produce a creative
and entertaining experience. The problem most magicians
have with being creative is the inability to think freely
and openly about any and all possibilities. When we brainstorm
ideas for acts or routines, we tend to place roadblocks
that hinder us from ever really getting anywhere.
The worst enemy to creativity is us. What happens is that
we must teach our minds to be open to thinking. Each and
every one of you reading this right now has the ability
to be as creative as you want to be. The problem is that
as we think of wonderful ideas, we stop going down the road
because thoughts enter our mind that inhibit us.
I always say that when being creative, money is no factor.
Now of course it will be eventually, but I am making a simple
point here. Creativity alone does not cost anything. If
there is no cost to creative thought, why hinder yourself
in the first place.
I also always say that when thinking of ideas, never limit
yourself by saying, "how am I going to do this or afford
this." As soon you state this, your hindering creativity.
Creativity does not need road blocks that we seem to always
place on ourselves.
Creativity
needs free reign to grow and prosper. If we allow ourselves
to think freely, we can come up with amazingly fresh ideas
that we would never have thought of before.
When
one stops to think "How am I going to accomplish this"
or "How can I afford this," then what happens
is the mind puts up these road blocks. Creativity comes
to a grinding halt. All those great ideas inside your head
never come about because we are stopping ourselves before
we even get started.
When I start to brainstorm about ideas for a new routine,
I try and place myself first into a spot with little distractions.
I train my mind to simply think. In creative thought there
are no wrong answers. There are only possibilities to be
discovered. So, allow these ideas to enter your head freely.
Find a method for recording these ideas. This can be pen
and paper, a computer or a recording device. Allow these
ideas to stream from you.
Now do not get bothered by the notion that these ideas may
not mean anything or may not be complete. That is simply
natural. It happens. Just record them. Some of the best
ideas in magic came from incomplete segments of an idea.
However, these ideas would never have been recorded if one
stopped themselves simply because the thought did not make
sense.
So, as you are thinking creatively understand that there
are no rules to hold you down. There are no roadblocks on
the road to creative thought. The only roadblocks are ones
we place ourselves. So, learn to be open with any and all
ideas no matter how bizarre they may be. Do not hinder your
creativity by wondering how something will be done or the
cost associated with it. Do not hinder yourself by not recording
an idea simply because it does not make full sense to you
at that moment. Simply let your mind be open to any idea.
When you start to do this, you will be amazed at what comes
about.
If you are so hung up on one idea, you will often times
miss the 100 other ideas your mind wants to create for you.
Do not allow these wonderful ideas to be lost. So, do not
worry so much about price or how it can be built. There
is always a way to make something work. That is to be figured
out after you have the creative idea. Never hinder thinking
freely just because of the worry about cost or how something
will be created.
Creativity
is our most prized skill that we simply take for granted
and never use enough of. Learn to think creatively and open
the mind to the ideas that we all have there. I guarantee
your magic will become more unique and your audiences will
thank you for it.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at KyleKellyMagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

9. New Book From Chris Wardle And James Ward

Message by Chris Wardle
Creating
The Impossible
Methods
for Magic
A new book by Chris Wardle and James Ward - both award-winning
members of The Magic Circle, with a long list of credits
devising magic for books, magazines, television, radio and
the stage.
In this new book they share their simple and practical methodologies,
whilst using examples of their own creations to illustrate
their points. Inside you will explore workable, practical
ways to devise your own magic and methods for making effects
'your own' so as to be able to offer something unique to
your audiences.
Included are a brand new take on 'The Jigsaw Card' and a
Date Prediction with a kicker finish by Chris and an ingenious
name matching idea and a memory-cheating effect 'Eye Witness'
from James, to name but a few.
This book will inspire you and set you on the right path
for 'Creating the Impossible'.
"'Creating the Impossible' is that rare thing, an original
and practical handbook for magicians...Chris Wardle and
James Ward have taught themselves to be inventive, resourceful
and sharp. In short, they are the right kind of expert.
They are creative. They are ingenious. Read this book carefully
and I believe their ingenuity will start to rub off on you."
From the Foreword by Geoffrey Durham.
"Chris and James have done a wonderful job with this
book which I don't think has existed before. Useful for
both creators and those who are new to creating magic, this
book will inspire and educate the reader on the creative
process. I feel all magicians should read this book. I love
it!"
Angelo Carbone
'Both
Chris and James have the ability to take simple ideas and,
by the addition of layers of subtlety and ingeniously-devised
presentations, build them into entertaining mysteries, many
of which have found their way into the repertoires of leading
professional magicians. This is because they instinctively
understand what appeals to the public.' Walt Lees, editor
of Repro Magic's magazine 'The Magician' (formerly Club
71), 'Mystery Magazine' and 'Abracadabra', the world's longest
running weekly magic magazine.

11. MINDvention October 2018
--------------------------------------------
Message by Danny Archer (US)
This
year is the 15th edition of the biggest and best mentalism
convention in America ... MINDvention. It will take place
from October 21st to the 23rd in Las Vegas, NV with a workshop
from Kennedy as an extra charge event on the 24th. MINDvention
gathers an international crowd of working mentalists, enthusiasts,
and people who are just starting to explore this most fascinating
topic.
The
talent lineup so far includes the aforementioned Kennedy,
who is presenting again for his second time. His high energy
style and polished presentations are one of the reasons
he is one of the busiest performers in the UK.
Timon
Krause is one of the Netherland's leading mentalists. With
a background in Philosophy and Theater he has been lecturing
on the philosophy of mentalism and performance theory all
around the world.
Ian
Rowland, also from the UK, has performed and lectured four
times at the Blackpool Convention, six times at 'MAGIC LIVE!'
in Las Vegas and three times at the Magic Circle. His Penguin
Magic lecture is one of the most successful mentalism lectures
ever, with over seventy 5-star ratings.
From
America we have the Evasons presenting their incredible
two-person mentalism act. The Evasons have been honored
with some of the top awards in their field. They are the
first recipients of "The Mentalism Award" from
the Milbourne Christopher Foundation. This will be the first
two-person act to present at MINDvention, and we look forward
to an incredible show from these two hard working pros.
Harrison
Greenbaum not only does devastating mentalism, he will also
make you laugh out loud as he performs. An incredibly engaging
performer who does more than 600 shows a year. That means
he's doesn't just have a ton of experience, but that he's
also very, very tired. His lecture will teach you techniques
to create your own original material.
Gil
Eagles is a legend in the mentalism world and his performance
last year of his Q&A act was incredible and earned him
a well-deserved standing ovation. Gil will be back this
year with an all new presentation sharing his thoughts,
ideas and experiences from a man who spent a lifetime on
the platform.
Ken
Weber, who is an influential member of the mentalism community
and he wrote one of the most respected books on performance
techniques will be the subject of a sit-down interview conducted
by another accomplished performer Eric Samuels. This should
be a wonderful and insightful interview from these two knowledgeable
mentalists.
David
Gerard is a mentalist from San Francisco, CA. His modern
approach to the art is showcased at his weekly theater show
as well as numerous private and corporate engagements nationwide.
His talk at MINDvention 2016 garnered acclaim from hobbyists
and pros alike, and we're happy to have him back this year
for a rapid-fire lecture full of tips and tricks.
