2. Latest Update On David Berglas Digital Scrapbooks
--------------------------------------------
Message by David Berglas (UK)
This
week, Friday 7th September, Episode 19, recalls my prediction
of a football match, that I sent a week before the game
was played - with full details of the scorers, times of
the goals, injury times, etc. It was to publicise my very
first Variety Theatre appearance at the Blackpool Palace
in 1954.
On
Friday 14th, Episode 20, I describe one of my most difficult
and complex stunts that I did on live television in 1955.
An identifiable object vanished in Manchester and re-appeared
in London 5 seconds later.
For
your information, future episodes will include anecdotes
from two world tours, television series in various European
countries, product launches, my appearances on popular radio
series and my favourite occupation, working in the film
industry.

Free
digital magazine - 120 pages - www.vanishmagazine.com
Purchase your printed copy via the magazine
Over
the past six years we have produced 50 issues of Vanish
plus several Vanish Special Editions. My goal was to make
it a truly international magic magazine by having feature
articles and contributors from around the world. That goal
was more than achieved. Some issues now have several hundred
thousand downloads (the Criss Angel and Franz Harary editions
for example) and readership numbers continue to grow. During
the past six years I have introduced many 'new' magicians
who are now at the forefront of our business. I am pleased
to have Anastasia Synn on the cover as she leads the charge
in an area of magic very few know about - Cyborg magic.
It's a fascinating story and I know we will be hearing more
from her in the very near future.
Nick
Lewin has been with Vanish since day one - actually I don't
believe he's contributed to every single edition!! We have
an amazing piece on his career which includes performances
on theatres, Las Vegas, cruise ships, The Magic Castle and
so much more.
We
also introduce Polish magician Wowtek Rotowski who is combining
theatre and magic in a most unique way.
Thomas
Swieciak begins a three-part series on Magic in Asia and
an exchange of magic cultures.
Jeff Christensen recently went to Spain for magic education
and shares his views on what he discovered.
Jim
Sisti looks at something he calls The Fomo Fallacy. It is
something many of us do and he shares his views on this.
Dameon
(Hal Meyers) recently visited Denny Haney at Denny &
Lees Magic Studio - what he saw Blew Him Away. We have photos
galore of this incredible collection.
Jason
Ladayne looks at what makes Strong Magic? and how to adapt
it to your own performance and tricks.

Message by Tobias Beckwith (US)
September
3, 2018 Las Vegas, NV - Last night, at their headquarters
in London, The Magic Circle presented Jeff McBride with
The David Devant Award. Among the highest awards bestowed
in the world of magic and illusion, the Devant award is
given to those who have made a significant contribution
in advancing the art of magic or who have given outstanding
service to magic internationally. The trophy is a miniature
bust of David Devant, the first President of The Magic Circle.
The original life size bronze is on permanent display in
the Magic Circle Headquarters.
A
10-year headliner at his popular McBride's Wonderground,

skills. His early career saw him as opening act for such

shows won raves off-Broadway, in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
He
is founder of the McBride Magic & Mystery School in
Las Vegas, McBride's Wonderground (magic nightclub) and

Haydn
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Magicians
create mystery. Some create it with props, others with their
scripts, and some with both. Motion picture celebrities
research the backgrounds of the people whose roles they
will play. Or if it is a fictitious character, they still
understand who that person is supposed to be on stage and
screen. Whit Haydn created a character, "Pop"
Haydn, who traveled into the future where he cannot return
but is loving every minute of being a con man in the 21st
century.
In
this week's podcast, Whit talks in detail how he created
the character and how over time he fleshed out "Pop"
into who he is today. It is a fascinating, funny tale that
should serve as an inspiration to others who might be creating
a character or who is trying to be someone else on stage.
Even if you are not a performer or have no interest in creating
an alter-ego or on-stage persona, I am confident that you
will still enjoy hearing the tall tales that Whit spins
as he brings to life "Pop" Haydn.

8. Homage To Bannon - John Carey #16
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main
In
a nutshell, this is a signed card in sealed envelope. The
inspiration here was John Bannon's beautiful effect Heart
of the city, published in Smoke and Mirrors. You will require
a small pay envelope and just a moment's preparation.
Place
the three of Diamonds face-down inside the envelope and
seal it. From the top of the deck down set the seven of
Diamonds followed by the seven of Clubs.
Bring
out the envelope and toss it casually to the table. Do not
call it a prediction or indeed anything. Just do it. We
will now force the seven of Diamonds using Bannon's Christ
Cross force, from his book High Calibre. It's essentially
an in the hands handling of Max Holden's classic cross-cut
card force.
Hold
the deck face-down in left hand dealer's grip and riffle
down the outer left corner with the thumb, asking your helper
to say stop. When stopped swing cut the upper packet into
the left hand and then tap the left long edge of the right-hand
packet against the back of the left-hand packet. Place the
right hands cards side jogged on top of the remaining cards.
The
right-hand gestures to a Sharpie on the table and you ask
them to pick it up and uncap it. This provides sufficient
time misdirection for John's force to be most deceptive.
Lift off the upper jogged packet from above in the right
hand and push off and hand the top card (7d) of the left-hand
packet to your helper for signing. Get them to write the
time down too. Assemble the deck, getting a left little-finger
break above the seven of Clubs.
Dribble
the cards to your break and extend the left hand and have
the signed card placed on top of its packet. Assemble the
deck, keeping a little-finger break above the signed selection.
Take back the Sharpie and put it away.
"A
playing card is made up of two main components. A suit and
a value. Gary, just think about the suit of your card."
Cut
off half the cards above your break to the table, then cut
to your break and drop them on top. Take the top card of
the left hands stock and place it face-down to the left
of the sealed envelope. Drop the remaining cards on top
of the tabled cards and pick up the deck.
"Now
think about the value of your card." Execute any deceptive
false cut and deal off the top card and place it to the
right of the envelope. Hand the deck to your spectator.
"Inside
that envelope that's been here the whole time is a message,
cleverly disguised as a playing card. First let's look at
the two cards I cut to. This card tells me your card is
a seven and this card tells me your card is a Diamond, yes?
And finally, the card in the envelope tells me something
very personal. How you sign your name!"
Suiting
actions to words, open the envelope and take out the card
and place it between the other two cards. Set the envelope
aside. To complete the mystery, we will use Brother John
Hamman's sandwich switch from his seminal routine, the signed
card. Pick up the two outer cards and hold one in each hand.
Bring both hands together and scoop up the card in the centre,
the right-hand card going beneath it and the left-hand card
above. Push the packet square at the fingertips.
Without
stalling slide out the lower card and flip it face-up and
place it on top, showing a black seven. Immediately slide
out the new bottom card, flip it face-up and slide it beneath
the packet, showing a Diamond card. There must be absolutely
no hesitation with this displacement sequence. To conclude
the effect, remove the face-down card and turn it face-up
to reveal their signed selection.

9. The Art Of Simplicity - #498 - Kyle Peron

As
an artist, I was always taught to look beyond the obvious
and to really learn to "see" beyond what I think
is there. I was also taught to see the beauty in the simplest
of shapes and the simplicity of nature. It was a lesson
I had always used in my art because it made sense.
However,
I never realized that this notion of simplicity can be directly
carried over to the magic that I do and perform for my audiences.
Can simplicity be used to make me a better performer? Can
it be used to create acts or routines that make better sense
to an audience? This is what I would like to explore with
you.
Often
times we as magicians create acts and routines that are
more for ourselves then they are for our audiences. We fall
in love with the moves and complexity of things as that
intrigues us. Part of being a magician is the love for the
technical side of what we do. The ability to learn moves
is fascinating for us. However, aren't these moves supposed
to be invisible to the audience?
How
many of you reading this have ever seen a performance of
a card manipulation act that went on way too long? How many
of you have seen a linking ring routine that seemed to last
forever? Laugh if you want because it is funny. It is funny
because we all know it to be true.
I
think what happens is that we learn these moves and love
the moves so figure we have to include every single one
in the routine we create. Well time for a reality check.
Just because you know how to vanish a card 50 different
ways, does not mean your audience wants or needs to
see all 50 ways. To a lay audience it means you vanished
a card and produced the card and you are doing it over and
over again.
In
many cases, certain routines can be often too over done
for a lay audience. We can often times overload them with
so much that the audience simply shuts down from engaging
with you. In this case, we need to learn that simplicity
can be a good thing. It can often allow our routines to
play even better than we had thought they would.
Now
simplicity is a scary thing for most performers. The thought
of not doing as much terrifies some people. We do so much
in our acts because 1) we can 2) we love it and 3) it allows
us to hide behind the moves. But remember there is beauty
in simplicity.
Let
me share with you an analogy that may make this point clear.
A master craftsman has many tools. He owns a full shop of
every tool ever created for wood working. He has studied
them all and knows how to use every one of them. But this
craftsman does not start a project thinking
he has to use every single item in his shop. He simply knows
just which ones to use to create a cabinet of beauty. The
end result is a beautiful thing and it is created that way
from him simplifying what he does. A magician needs to do
the same thing.
Use
just the right tools (moves and techniques) to create what
you are looking for. Maybe certain segments do not need
to be done in order for the effect to still work. Sometimes
it is helpful to sit back and record
your routine or act. Then objectively see what you can physically
take out and still be able to tell the story you are trying
to tell. Strip it down to its most basic format. When you
do this, you start to develop what I refer to as the "foundation"
of the routine.
This
foundation is simply the act or routine in its most basic
format that still works, still plays and is understood by
and audience. Once you get here, you will be amazed at how
much you do not have to do tostill convey things. Once you
get this foundation, you can then start to build in a few
things as you need to in order to develop a laugh or get
a reaction. But everything is still always reviewed for
simplicity.
Now
do not mix up simplicity for boring. They are not the same
thing at all. Simplicity can be a beautiful thing. It means
that card act may not have to last 7 mins with every card
move known to man. It means the ring routine does not have
to utilize 8 rings and 3 minutes of ring combination patterns.
I
have seen ring routines that are just so amazingly beautiful
that are done with no more than 3 rings and performed in
3 minutes. It is not how much you do but what you do with
what you have. Sometimes simplicity alone can allow the
magician to concentrate more on the entertainment value
of the act. It allows you to slow down and to give more
to the audience.
So,
the next time you are developing a routine, take a step
back from it and view it with an open and critical eye.
Strip the routine down and ask yourself is there anything
in the routine that complicates what I am trying to convey?
Can I take anything away and by doing so, allow myself to
give more to the audience? Is this simplicity actually making
the effect even stronger?
I
think when one starts to do this, they realize that simplicity
itself can be a magic tool in our tool box. It can be used
to great effect if we simply open our eyes to seeing and
using it.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

11. Magic Castle Club Arrives In Santa Barbara
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)
Noozhawk
the freshest news in Santa Barbara Business
The
Mysterious Magic Castle Club Arrives in Santa Barbara
Owners of the Hollywood establishment open private club
in former Cafe Del Sol restaurant
It's
no illusion. Santa Barbara's mysterious new magic club has
arrived - sort of.
The Magic Castle Cabaret, an elegant, upscale and private
club, opened a week ago at 30 Los Patos Way, across the
street from the Andrée Clark Bird Refuge.
And even though the private club has opened for some members-only
shows on Thursday and Friday nights, it appears that the
Magic Castle still has some magic to work with the city's
Architectural Board of Review.
The Santa Barbara ABR has yet to approve elements of the
building's exterior. Senior Planner Beatriz Gularte told
Noozhawk Tuesday that the Magic Castle would need a building
permit for tenant improvements and a public works permit
for any new planters and restriping parking spaces.
The ABR reviewed the project in April. The Magic Castle
proposed changes like renovating and expanding the existing
front patio, adding a new ADA ramp, restriping the front
parking spaces because they encroached into the public right-of-way,
and installing new planters. No new floor area was proposed.
Gularte said the ABR continued the project indefinitely
when it met in April, and told the architect to restudy
the color of the building, restudy the new screening proposed
at the roof, "which does not appear to integrate well
with the existing building", provide a landscape plan,
showing all removed plantings and relocate the proposed
palm tree, and consider planting more "judiciously
placed canopy trees to provide additional shade for the
building."
The club's owner, Arlene Larsen, told Noozhawk that "we're
showing it off," but that "we're not open to the
public."
Larsen said she is waiting to hear back from her architect,
but in the meantime, "we're not doing anything major.
Everything is done with screws. If they don't like it we'll
take it down."
The building was previously occupied by Cafe Del Sol and
the Planning and Zoning Division considers the Magic Castle
to be under the umbrella of a restaurant.
The Santa Barbara business will be a private club for the
property owner's friends and family and guests, all over
the age of 21. The club will open at 5 p.m. and include
a bar, appetizers and desserts. Inside, magicians would
perform several magic shows throughout the evening, according
to a planning consultation that the city performed on the
proposal in 2017.
Magician Gene Urban, who performed a week ago at the club's
first performances, said the "the interior is spectacular."
The
club's owners have been collecting artifacts from movie
sets going back several decades, he said.
"When people come in they are going to be treated to
something they might not see in the United States, but maybe
an older town in Europe," Urban said.
He
has lived in Santa Barbara since 1998 and full time since
2014; Urban performs at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, but
said he is thrilled about performing in Santa Barbara and
not having to commute to Los Angeles once the facility opens.
Plans for the finished club include 89 seats inside the
3,600-square-foot building, including a back stage, green
room, dressing room, kitchen, office and gift shop, according
to city documents. Larsen said her husband Milt founded
the Hollywood Magic Castle and the Santa Barbara version
is her project.
To get in to the private club, "we have to know you,"
she said. "It's a little hangout for our magician friends."
And unlike some clubs in town, the size of one's bank account
doesn't matter for entry.
"We're not open to the public," Larsen said. "We're
open to our friends."

12. Bubble University

Message by Tim Ellis (Australia)
Carisa
Hendrix has finally opened her long awaited online 'Bubble
University' and the bubble community is outraged! #Bubblegate
With
comments like "I want it to retain its wonder and intrigue
so the select few of us who do it really well remain sought
after and really special", it's clear the "bubble
elite" can see just how good 'Bubble U' graduates are
going to be and they don't want them moving into this lucrative
market.
I
saw her show kill repeatedly at The Melbourne Magic Festival
(read the review here https://tayaroundtown.com/2018/07/23/mmf-2018-review-deedee-darlings-bubble-magic-show-performed-by-deedee-darling/
). I can understand why the bubble community want to keep
this market all to themselves.
For
less than what you'll be paid for your first show, you can
enroll in 'Bubble U' now and learn the real secrets of an
internationally successful bubble artist who spent over
8 years creating a brilliantly structured show.
With
new videos added every week for four months, you will learn
more about the tricks, recipes, gags, scripts, marketing,
music, character, science, props, psychology and structure
required to create a great bubble show. All from a pool
of knowledge that has never been previously available.
Those
of us who have seen her Bubble Lecture live know how good
this material is.
Will
'Bubble U' result in more bubble performers? Who knows...
but I can guarantee 'Bubble U' will result in BETTER bubble
performers.
