Proud
to announce the premiere of another one of our @Netflix
original magic series starring @DMCmagic! #DeathByMagic
streams worldwide Nov 30th!!
After
12 months of secrecy, it gives me the greatest pleasure
to announce my brand-new series with @Netflix - Death By
Magic.
This
last year I have been on a journey through eight cities
across four continents to uncover the stories of magicians
who died performing the most dangerous stunts ever attempted.
Along the way I share beautiful magic with those that I
meet - before recreating my own epic-scale interpretations
of those deadly stunts, in front of terrified live audiences.
The
show is a beautifully cinematic blend of history, international
travel, magic and death-defying stunts. It is the culmination
of more than 20 years of dreaming, 10 years of planning
and more than 12 months' intensive work with the kindest,
most brilliant minds in the business.
DEATH
BY MAGIC launches worldwide 30th November exclusively on

Rio

Penn
& Teller return to their namesake Las Vegas theater
at the Rio
By
Jay Jones
Playing
on their difference in height, comedic magicians Penn &
Teller returned to their Las Vegas show on Saturday night.
(Caesars Entertainment)
Penn
& Teller returned to the Las Vegas stage, nearly two
months after back surgery forced Teller to take a break.
The iconic magicians returned to the stage Saturday night
in the theater named for them at the Rio All Suite Hotel
& Casino.
"I thought there was an especially long welcoming applause
at the beginning of the show," Teller said. "The
energy that the love of the audience provides you with is
quite overwhelming."
For a 70-year-old magician, back surgery could be a good
excuse to retire. But partner Penn Jillette, 63, and Teller
have no such intentions. They used their comeback from a
50-day hiatus to announce a three-year extension to their
contract.
Penn & Teller have been performing their comedic magic
show at the off-Strip resort since 2001. They first began
working together 43 years ago.
Penn & Teller soon will be introducing new content to
keep the show fresh.
"I suspect within two or three weeks, there will be
three new pieces in the show," Teller said. "We'll
probably put them into the show one at a time."
Teller, the short half of the duo, said he has been cleared
to return to work. Still it will take several more months
for his back to heal.
"There's nothing, I think, that heals you more than
the act of creating something new," he said. "Collaborating
with other people and creating something new, there's just
this kind of amazing, satisfying, exuberant energy."
Penn & Teller perform 9 p.m. Saturdays through Wednesdays.
Tickets cost from $75 to $95.
With at least three years of shows in the offing and his
back on the mend, Teller clearly is not contemplating retirement.
"The problem with the idea of retirement is, what would
I retire to?" he said. "I don't know what I would
do that I would enjoy more."

4. Hands Off Divination - John Carey #14

Message by John Carey (UK)

Using
a wonderful ploy of Chad Long's from his Shuffling Lesson
routine, this piece is about as simple as it gets. But don't
underestimate its power. Designed purely for laymen, you
will be pleasantly surprised how strong this plays.
There
is a three-card set up on the face of the deck. On the face
have the Ace of Clubs, followed by the four of Hearts and
then the seven of Spades. False shuffle retaining the three-card
slug on the face. Then ask spectator 1 to say stop as you
execute a slip shuffle, retaining the Ace on the face of
the packet, which you hand to them when they stop you. Repeat
this slip shuffle sequence with spectators 2 and 3, each
of them getting a packet with a force card on the bottom.
You are left with a few cards, which will serve as a demonstration
packet.
Spread
your packet in the hands and invite your helpers to copy
you. Then push a few cards out of the centre, strip them
out and drop on top. Repeat this sequence twice more as
you talk about how this randomizes the cards. Of course,
it serves the covert purpose of the spectators mixing their
cards and yet retaining each of the three force cards on
the face of each packet.
Ask
your helpers to take a peek of the face card of their respective
packets and lock the thought of that card in their minds.
Then have them cut their packets and complete the cut. Ask
one of the trio to gather up all the cards, including yours
and shuffle the deck. Then have them box the deck and toss
it or hand it to you.
"So,
each if you took a packet of cards and shuffled. You formed
the thought of a card in your minds and then mixed the cards
some more. Everything was done totally out of my control,
so sleight of hand is impossible."
To
conclude the piece I reveal or divine the cards a la the
Dave Hoy tossed out deck, asking each person to sit down
if I named their cards.
Simple, practical and strong.

5. MAGIC Live! Updates Plus Chicago Magic History

Message by Scott Wells (US)
The
past few weeks has been a hectic mixture of travel and magic
and more travel. As a result, I have not reminded you of
what you may have been missing.
First
off, there was a little convention in Las Vegas with about
1,600 of some of my closest friends in magic. By now you
have no doubt heard or read much of what went on at this
year's MAGIC Live! convention. And for those of you who
are subscribed to The Magic Word Podcast, (you are subscribed,
aren't you?), then you've no doubt heard the daily updates
from the convention showroom floor featuring chats with
talent, dealers, registrants plus an insightful wrap-up
with organizer, Stan Allen, at the end of the last day.
But if you missed them or want to hear them again, then
here are the links:
Day
One: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/439-2018-magic-live-day-one
Day Two: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/440-2018-magic-live-day-two-update
Day Three: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/441-2018-magic-live-day-three-update
Day Four: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/442-2018-magic-live-day-four-update
Then
last week we released the first of a two-part podcast with
Past International President of The I.B.M., Don Wiberg.
Last week he talked about brick and mortar magic shops in
and around Chicago in the 1900's. Then he began reminiscing
about many of the original 108 members of the Chicago Magic
Roundtable which carried over into this week's part two
of our discussion. Even if you have never visited Chicago
nor interested in their magic scene, many of the magicians
he talks about are well known in our profession and worthy
of your time to hear the old stories about some of those
who made out art great.

6. Emotional Response - #496 - Kyle Peron

There
is something I talk often about in magic when it comes to
creativity in the magic that we do. I call it emotional
response. It is a "layer" that can be used in
any magic act or show to really connect with your audience
on a totally different level and helps to bring the audience
closer to you and you to them.
Emotional
Response: This is a huge one and can work so wonderful if
done well. If done right it can make your audience connect
with you long after you have left the stage. It is causing
an emotional response in your audiences by allowing them
to connect and relate to your character and the predicament
presented on the stage. It can also work closely in with
the theme you are presenting.
Every
person in your audience has experienced something in common.
What is common to us all is emotions. We have all felt fear,
love, confusion and happiness. These are common to every
person no matter who you are performing for. So, if you
can connect with them on one or more of these emotions,
you can get that audience member to really relate to you
because they are remembering a similar situation when they
too had that exact same emotion or situation happen to them.
They can relate.
For
example, your act could be all about this guy at night who
is just trying to reach a bus to get home. It is late and
he misses his bus and the entire world seems to be passing
him buy. He sits on a bench to wait for the next bus and
turns on his radio. He drifts off to sleep only to awake
moments later. He realizes that magic starts happening to
him even though he does not know exactly why it is. Throughout
the act the magic that happens to him causes him to smile
and to realize that life is full of wonder even if we may
not always see it.
Now
this is just a very vague example but you can see how the
entire act could be a routine but now you are relating to
them a story of a very well-defined character with a well-defined
theme. You give them an emotional response to the act because
most can relate to being in a similar situation in their
own life. They can relate to being alone, being scared or
not knowing what to do in their lives. They start to relate
to the character you are presenting. In this way they relate
better to what you are doing on stage.
Now
sometimes emotional response can also be called a "personality
piece" as they are both very similar in structure and
purpose. Both are pieces of magic that are performed for
your audience that really plays upon an emotional response
from them. This is done so that it really allows the audience
to see that you are human and you share the same things
they share, have the same desires, the same worries and
experiences. This personality piece can be a very strong
piece in your show because it really gets the audience on
your side and if there still is any barrier between you
and them, this is sure to knock it down.
The
personality piece can be anything, but it usually stems
from something that the audience can relate to. It usually
is something that everyone in your audience may have experienced
at some point in their own life. Because of this, they can
relate to you and to your magic that you are sharing with
them. I have several personality pieces that I have created
over the years and use in various shows that I do.
However,
be cautious of just when in your show you use a personality
piece or emotional response. You must not do it too early
in the show. The audience is not ready for it yet. You must
first establish your skills, let them see who you are, welcome
them, build that trust and only when that has happened should
you place in your personality piece.
This subject of emotional response and personality pieces
is something I have been studying and applying with my magic
for a few years now. It really has helped me connect with
my audience on a new level and to really bring them in closer
to the entire experience of the magic I present.
Also,
part of it derived from a simple happy accident. See as
a child I learned I was losing my hearing and by age 14
or so I realized I would never hear normal ever again. By
the time I was in my 20's I was over 60% deaf in both ears.
I now wear hearing aids and even though it does help me
a great deal, I will never ever hear 100% again.
Many
people so long ago never ever thought I would be able to
do magic. Many times, I heard that you will not be able
to do it the way you want to do it because you will never
hear the sounds you need to hear or your audience helpers.
I never gave up though. Even though I was told this many
times I was determined to be a magician. It was not something
I wanted to do it was something I had to do.
Well
now that I have reached my dreams, I felt that I needed
to share part of this story ... my story ... with the audiences
I perform for. With this in mind about 5 years ago I developed
a personality piece that deals with this on a magical and
emotional level. It is in a sense a routine that I perform
at every show I do and even though it is simplistic in nature,
the story I openly share with my audiences and the magic
that follows with it, opens so many eyes and hearts in a
way that is very hard to describe.
I
did it one show on a whim. I just felt that I needed to
share a bit more of who I was and what I have been through.
And ever since that first personality piece (or emotional
response piece) there have been some amazing stories that
people tell me after the shows about that very routine I
perform in my show. I have memories of just how it has touched
certain people and how to some of them, it had directly
changed their lives as well. In a way a personality piece
or emotional response can really work to not only add to
the magical experience but to really allow your audiences
to know who you are. When you do this, you can see the audience
drawn more to you and the wall that stands between you and
the audience does indeed crumble away.
I
am not saying all emotional response acts or personality
pieces need to be this way. However, I felt it important
for my audience to really know who I am. I connect with
the audience and through the emotions I openly share with
them, they connect with me. I connect with them and the
show just seems to mend.
Now emotional response does not always have to be a sad
thing. Do not get me wrong. Emotional response simply means
that you are conveying something on stage that through your
actions and presentation conveys an emotional reaction from
the audience watching. In many ways, this can indeed be
joy or happiness. It can even be magic relating to something
in your life that everyone else can possibly relate to.
When you sit down and think about it emotional response
is nothing new at all. It is done all the time in movies
and plays that you watch or go see. Why is it that you feel
a certain way after a movie or after a part in a play? It
is directly related to what you are seeing on stage or on
the screen. Even though a trick may not be performed, magic
is happening because it is affecting the way you are thinking.
That is a pretty strong piece of magic if you can grab a
hold of it and apply it to your magic acts or show.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at KyleKellyMagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

Message by Ice Storm Entertainment, Maxwell Vann (US)
(On July 22, 2018) master magician goes from a second-hand
magic kit to an induction into the National Magic Hall of
Fame.
ICE
was inducted on July 22, 2018 to the National Magic Hall
of Fame on Sunday July 22, 2018, master magician Kenrick
"Ice" McDonald was inducted as the newest member
of The Society of American Magicians' National Magic Hall
of Fame.
The
Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.) is the world's most
prestigious magic organization, founded in 1902. The announcement
of the induction was done at the S.A.M. National Conference
held in Orlando, Fl. Ice joins a very exclusive list of
magicians which include Harry Houdini, Howard Thurston,
Richard Potter, Doug Henning, Fetaque Sanders, Harry Blackstone
and David Copperfield.
At
the age of 10 years old, Ice was given a second-hand magic
kit with many of the pieces missing from the kit. Young
Kenrick, a very creative child, was able to figure out how
to make the magic work with incomplete pieces to the tricks.
This was the beginning of a magnificent magic career. Ice's
professional career has spanned over 37 years. He has been
booking and selling out venues throughout the world.
ICE
is an international entertainer who has gained notoriety
for creating amazing illusions and performing incredible
magic tricks. Just 4 years ago, ICE made history when he
was inaugurated as National President of the Society of
American Magicians (S.A.M.). ICE is the first African American
magician to serve as president in the organization's 115
history. Harry Houdini served as president from 1917 until
his death in 1926.
Ice
McDonald - "I am extremely honored and grateful for
the induction into the National Magic Hall of Fame. To be

13. Fundraising Auction August 25th
--------------------------------------------
Message by Gabe Fajuri (US)
Potter
& Potter's August 25th auction of magic memorabilia
includes selections from the collection of Bob Swadling,
including the teakettle he constructed for use on Paul Daniels
popular BBC TV Show. All proceeds from the sale of this
lot - and eleven more, including Jon Martin-made apparatus,
Hammerton items, etc. - including buyer's premiums, will
be directed to a fund set up in benefit of Sebastian Midtvaage
for the costs of his cancer treatment and healthcare.
From
Bob:
"I
met Sebastian Midtvaage as a student at the age of fourteen.
Even at that young age, he demonstrated great skill and
accomplishment as a magician. Under my guidance, he progressed
further and has become a successful professional magician
at just twenty-two years of age.
"Some
five months ago, following severe headaches, Sebastian went
to the emergency room. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed
with an aggressive grade-four brain tumor caused by pineoblastoma
cancer. A hole was drilled into his skull to release pressure,
and brain surgery was scheduled. On July 3, Sebastian underwent
an operation which lasted seven hours and was judged to
be successful. However, the surgeon advised Sebastian that
he must undergo further radiation, chemotherapy, and physical
therapy.
"Sebastian's
family has been by his side around the clock, but they are
in need of financial assistance. As such, I have decided
to auction items from my collection in benefit of my friend.
Among other pieces from my collection, the sale includes
the Magic Kettle which my good friend Paul Daniels performed
on BBC-TV in 1979. Daniels (1938-2016) passed away on March
17, 2016 from a brain tumor.
"Potter
& Potter Auctions has generously offered to present
my property at auction in benefit of Sebastian. All proceeds
from the sale, including buyer's premiums, will be directed
to a fund set up in benefit of Sebastian Midtvaage for the
costs of his treatment and healthcare."
The
auction takes place August 25th, and bidding has already
begun. The catalog is online here:
http://auctions.potterauctions.com/catalog.aspx
The
benefit items are at the end of the sale, lots 455-467.
Questions
can be directed to our office: info@potterauctions.com -
or with a quick phone call to 773-472-1442.
Thanks
in advance to all who help contribute to this worthy cause!

14. Playland-Not-At-The-Beach To Close - Bay Area Center
For Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Gary Meyer (US)
Longtime
Oakland Magic Circle member and magician Frank Biafore is
having to lose Playland-Not-At-The-Beach that he and Richard
Tuck started. The building was sold and he cannot find another
location he can afford. Live magic shows, magic camp and
magic classes taught by various local performers have been
a staple of the place.
So
on Sept. 15 it will all go on auction at Playland-Not-At-The-Beach
being run by Allen Michaan's auction house. The catalog
can be downloaded.
A
sad day.
This
article in East Bay Times has Frank doing magic.
Other
articles SF Chronicle and Journal of Antiques.
Let's
hope the incredible miniature circus finds a good home as
a whole installation.
Going
to PNATB has brought back many memories of my childhood
spent at the real place. It is still open for visitors until
Sept. 3.
This
website has lots of great nostalgia.
