The
highlight for Michele and I this week was attending the
Paul Richards lecture (from New York) and he knows how to
lecture the finer points. He was very clear and concise
and has obviously lectured many times drawing everyone in
to his magic world for a full on 90 minutes.
He
is now lecturing through New Zealand main centres and we
will catch up with him and his lovely wife Wendy again at
GeniiCon in Sydney, Australia in June.

4. £1.25 by John Carey #1

I
have been having a lot of fun with the following impromptu
mentalism piece. It combines Deddy Corbuzier's wonderful
Free Will concept with equivoque and a nice timing force,
which I have not seen in print, but would not be surprised
if other people have used in this context.
You
will require 5 different valued coins: £1 coin, 20p,
5p, 2p and a 10 pence piece. On a business card have the
following message pre-written: I will have the 2p, you will
have the 10p. Leave a space to write some further information
during performance.
Bring
out your business card and state that you will write a message
on it. On the lower section of the card write down the name
of one of your helpers, say Mary, and then write, "will
be left holding exactly £1.25 pence!" Place the
card aside face down, but in view to the group you are working
for. Go to your pocket and bring out the 5 coins mentioned
above and place them onto the table in £1,20p, 5p,
2p and 10p order from left to right.
Address
Jack and say you will play a little game of decision making
with him. With your right hand pick up the £1 coin
and transfer it to your left hand. Then pick up the 20p
and drop it on top of the pound. "I'm going to pick
up each coin". By the end of that sentence you have
picked up the first 2 coins. Then you catch them off guard
and say "just say stop anytime please". You pick
up the third coin and transfer it to the left hand. The
timing on this is akin to the classic psychological stop
force, usually performed with cards. Two things will happen.
They stop you on the 2p or the 10p. Because of Free will,
you are covered either way. Let's say they say stop on the
2p. Place it in front of Jack.
Continue
by asking him to mix the remaining 4 coins around a little.
Now we will force the 10p coin using a classic 1 from 4
equivoque. Push two towards me etc. Place the 10p in front
of you and then scoop up the remaining coins and ask Mary
to hold them in a closed fist. Now the work has been done
and it's just a matter of selling the conditions and bringing
the effect home. In this example you will have Jack pick
up the business card and read out the message. Conclude
by asking Mary to open her hand and count how much money
she is holding. She says £1.25 and everyone goes home
happy. Of course if Jack selects the 10 pence, you will
read out the message a la Free will.
Notes:
This hasn't happened to me yet, but if they stop you on
the third coin, just say, "Fine, please slide the next
coin (2p) towards you".

Over
the years my wife and I have developed terms and phrases
that we use to sum up situations at events. It is these
codes that help us communicate important information without
saying something that could be perceived wrong by the client.
One such set of terms is the phrase "Starting Cold
vs Starting Hot."
What
we mean is that every event is different and you will always
face different challenges based upon situations you find
yourself in. As much as we like to be prepared for everything,
you just never know how much you are going to be forced
to adapt at any given time.
Starting
cold or hot refers simply to the interaction you have with
the audience prior to the show starting itself. If you start
cold, it means to us that we have little to no interaction
with the audience prior to the show starting. If we start
hot, it means we have had a chance to interact in some way
with the audience before the show starts.
Why
is this important? I feel it is important because it really
does affect the show and how you handle it. If you are forced
to start cold, it simply means you may have to work a little
harder in the beginning to 'warm up" the audience and
to get them to know who you are and what you are about.
Starting cold tends to make the audience evaluate you more
in the beginning of the show to get a feel for you.
If
you are starting cold, you may not want to just race right
into the show or to an audience participation effect too
early on. You need to establish yourself to them and then
go into that type of a routine once that has happened.
So
you can see that starting cold can certainly work and in
many cases we are forced to. You just need to be aware that
the show may need to be adapted to account for this.
If
I have an option, I would much rather start the show hot.
By doing so, I feel I do not have to work as hard because
the audience is already warmed up to me. They have already
interacted with me earlier and in so doing, have a sense
for what I am about and the type of experience they may
be seeing.
When
I start hot, the audience is usually much more responsive
early on in the show and this tends to lead to a much better
audience interaction and reaction.
So
how does one start hot? Well for me, there are many ways
in which I can do this and a lot or very simple. It just
requires you to be willing to extend yourself and make yourself
available.
For
example, get to an event early so you are not forced to
rush. When I get to any gig, I always meet the client/s,
shake their hands and show a deep interest in them. If we
are celebrating a child or honoring a person, I will always
greet them and show interest in them and their special day.
It seems simple and it is. But doing this gets you interacting
early. They get to see who you are and what you are like
and start to get comfortable with you.
If
you are done setting up, why not go around and just talk
with folks and show a sincere interest in them. By doing
so, it shows the folks you are accessible and friendly.
If you get a chance to (and it is appropriate) do some close
up or strolling magic for folks. Now even if
you are not getting paid for it, this makes a HUGE difference.
It does not mean you have to do it for a long period of
time. It means seeing an opportunity to connect.
When
I do things like this, it also helps me a great deal when
it comes time for the show. I can scope the audience out
as I am interacting. I can sense who might be a great helper
or who I may want to avoid for one reason or another. I
get a sense for who is outgoing and can realize they may
be perfect for certain routines.
I
also always ask their names. This is a HUGE thing I learned
in business. When you network, make it a habit to ask for
a name and remember it. People tend to feel much more at
ease when you call them by name. It is a show of respect
but it also says that you are a friend. It lets the audience
know that you are connected to them.
When
selecting a helper, if I am starting hot, then I can select
the helper by calling out their first name and bringing
them up that way. Usually it gets a much better reaction
then saying, "um how about the guy in the red shirt
in the second row." Business folks know the importance
of learning names and the power it creates.
One
example of how this entire theory works happened just a
few weeks ago. I was asked to do a gig for a Lion's Club
kid's night. When I got there I could easily see a huge
age range of people. You had young kids, preteens, teenagers,
adults and seniors. When walking in I could sense a feeling
that the adults felt the show was just for the kids and
the teens seemed to have a look on their face as if thinking
that magic would be too childish for them.
This
is where a starting hot principle kicks in. I knew that
I needed to get out there and warm the audience up prior
to the show start. I first talked to the client and then
to the board members. Just shaking hands and showing an
interest in them. Already I could see a change in perception.
I then started to do some simple strolling magic for the
younger kids. By doing so, I peeked the teens interest and
drew them over. The adults could see what I was doing had
skill and everyone seemed to just lighten up, relax and
realize better who I am.
When
the show started, it started hot. I already knew names,
already had a report with the crowd and had a good idea
of who I was selecting. It literally changed a possible
average show into an amazing show experience.

8. Naked Magicians Cancel Auckland Shows After Injury
--------------------------------------------
Stuff
The
Naked Magicians have cancelled Friday night's performances
in Auckland, due to magician Mike suffering "an unfortunate
muscular injury".
It
is unclear how Mike Tyler sustained his injury. And, the
show's publicist hasn't commented on what muscle is injured.
He
was injured following Thursday night's performance, the
show's producer said, and he spent Friday receiving medical
treatment.
On
Friday afternoon, Auckland Live confirmed two of the Naked
Magicians' Friday night shows would not go ahead. They were
to perform 7pm and 9.30pm at the Town Hall.
"Mike
has been receiving treatment for the injury all day today
in the hope that it would be right for tonight - but alas
it is not to be," a statement said.
"Regrettably, he is not yet in suitable physical condition
to perform this evening. We can assure that the decision
was not made lightly."
SK
Entertainment, the touring company behind the shows, said
the Naked Magicians' two closing shows on Saturday night
would go ahead.

9. Malaysian Magician Wows Judges On 'Britain's Got Talent'
--------------------------------------------
Star2.com
Malaysian
magician wows all four judges on 'Britain's Got Talent'.
After
impressing Asia with his act, Malaysian magician Andrew
Lee is now casting his spell on British audiences.
Lee,
a semi-finalist on season two of Asia's Got Talent (AGT),
managed to get through the audition round of Britain's Got
Talent. (The 12th season of the popular talent competition
began airing in Britain from April 14.)
Asked
why he was auditioning, Lee, 31, replied: "It's always
a dream to be on Britain's Got Talent and it's always my
hope to perform for the royal family."
His
audition was judged by four renowned British personalities:
reality show producer Simon Cowell, actress-singer Amanda
Holden, singer-model Alesha Dixon and comedian David Walliams.
Lee
got "Yes!" from all the judges, including the
notoriously hard-to-please Cowell. "That was one of
the most amazing things I've seen on this show: near death,
magic
everything I love!" enthused Cowell.
For
his act, Lee added a sense of danger to his card trick;
he had performed a similar routine for his AGT audition.
He enlisted the help of the show's hosts Anthony McPartlin
and Declan Donnelly, popularly known as Ant and Dec.
As
the unwilling "victim", Dec was asked by Lee to
pick a card from a deck. Lee then tore a corner of the card
to mark it before putting it back in the deck and asked
Ant to shuffle it.
He made Dec wear a padded dartboard over his torso, and
got ready a throwing knife, much to Dec's consternation.
For
added tension, Lee placed an eyeshield over his face, and
asked Ant to toss the deck in the air. Lee then expertly
threw the knife at the dartboard, pinning the ripped card
to it. (Thus far, the YouTube video has garnered over 28,000
views.)
Lee,
who also calls himself a mentalist and illusionist, has
performed all across Asia and countries such as India, Egypt,
Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar and Australia. He also performed in
Genting Highlands as their in-house magician.
In
previous media interviews, Lee said he picked up magic at
the age of 16. It all began when he enrolled in a correspondence
course from Australia.
"As
I was home-schooled by my mother, picking up the skills
via correspondence course felt just as natural," said
Lee, a trained nutritionist from the Global Institute for
Alternative Medicine in California, the United States.
For
Lee, his goal is "to entertain audiences not by merely
showing tricks but wanting them to experience the wonderment
of watching magic unfold before their very eyes!"
Here's hoping that Lee goes far in Britain's Got Talent!
