She
reportedly doesn't recognize friends or family members anymore,
but she's doing as well as can be expected for a lady of

4. The Magic Word Podcast - Magic Theaters Redux
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
This
week on The Magic Word Podcast we bring back to producers
of magic in theaters: John Sturk and Danny Archer of the
Chicago Magic Lounge and Smoke & Mirrors Magic Theater,
respectively. They talk about their new theaters that were
opened since they first talked about it on the podcast two
years ago. Each has a unique spin on what they have created
and how they market the theaters to get people in the door.
You
can listen to the podcast at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/2018/5/3/422-magic-theaters-redux
or you can hear it on iTunes, Tunein, Stitcher, iHeart Radio,
and a multitude of other podcatchers.
We
also congratulate the winners of the "Peek Pack"
by Brian Gillis from our recent podcast by Gregory Wilson:
Mark McDermott (Mark Alan) and David Woodrow. Congratulations,
guys, and thank everyone who entered. We had 100 entries
but only two could win, so good luck to the rest of you
on the next contest.

I
posted recently on Facebook asking a simple question. What
is one of the best qualities or traits you feel makes for
a good magician and why? It was an interesting discussion
that brought about a lot of great answers and opinions.
However, one item kept coming up by many people. It is a
single word called "personality". It was so great
seeing so many folks give value to personality over other
things.
I really think personality is so underrated in magic today.
People just simply forget the power it has in everything
we do. A trick is just a trick. The people want to like
you. If you take the same trick and place it in the hands
of someone who has and conveys personality and then someone
who does not, it looks like a totally different effect to
a lay audience. It really is that stunning to see happen.
Tricks alone do not really mean anything by themselves.
A trick will not happen or work without the magician. Place
a deck of cards on a table and they are not going to start
doing an ACR routine by themselves. If they do, then start
to run really quick. It is YOU that makes the difference
and it is YOU that makes the magic happen. If this is the
case, then focus should be on you and not the prop or trick
you are presenting.
But what is it about you? It is your personality that really
makes the audience enjoy the experience and enjoy you in
the process.
I honestly feel that people want to be entertained way more
than they want to be fooled. People want to walk away having
had fun with the experience of what they just saw happen.
Take some of the best acts out there today. Take a look
at the ones that you really love to watch perform. It is
safe to say that you enjoy them because 95% of their act
is not solely based on the magic alone. There is more to
what they provide isn't there? The good entertainers are
that way because a majority of their act is interacting
with the audience in a comical entertaining way, engaging,
dialogue, connecting, talking. etc. It is the essence of
their personality that makes you enjoy what they do.
It is interaction and expressing personality. It is taking
the audience on a journey and getting them laughing and
having fun instead of just seeking the WOW only.
I think that is key. If you could take away the trick in
any performance, and safely say the routine is still entertaining,
then I think you have something. Take away the props and
the trick and then look at what that performer does. I can
safely say the entertainers that "get it" are
the ones who without any of these props, can still entertain
and audience and have them enjoying every minute of it.
This is the essence and importance of personality in magic.
There is a quote that was shared to be by my good friend
Dan Birch. Dan said the quote goes like this. "If they
walk away saying remember the trick that the magician did,
then I have failed. But if they say remember the magician
who did that trick, then I have succeeded." I was so
glad Dan shared this with me because it got me thinking
that it is your personality that makes them remember you.
I think that is a key to developing a likeable character.
Some magicians try to focus so much on the trick only that
they are void of any personality at all. I want the audience
remembering me not my deck of cards.
No one is saying not to have the tricks. What we are saying
is that the focus of any performance should not be on the
trick itself. The trick is just a prop. The focus should
be on personality and using that personality to truly take
the effect to an entertaining level. It is giving the audience
more to enjoy. You add personality into what you do and
I guarantee your audiences will thank you for it.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. The Magic Of Johnny Thompson - Second Printing
--------------------------------------------
Message by Julie Eng
We
are pleased to announce that, with the sell-out success
of The Magic of Johnny Thompson, Magicana is now preparing
a second printing of this historic book.
But,
it will take a little time, because Johnny wants to make
sure the reprint is the same as the first, which means he
is going to sign each copy, just as he did before. Johnny
is that kind of a guy-he doesn't want to disappoint anyone.
So
please hang in!
While
we don't have a final delivery date for this second run
- because of the personal touch Johnny is giving each copy
- we can say that we will aim for delivery in July.

Thank you to everyone for the tremendous support for the
book.
We will be sure to update you as soon as we have more to
share!

8. Georges Méliès: France's Magician Of Early
Cinema
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded by Peter Wilson (US)
Independent
Georges
Méliès: France's magician of early cinema
who sent a rocket to the moon.
Pioneering
silent filmmaker specialised in steam punk imagery and innovative
effects taking inspiration from stage illusions, Jules Verne
and HG Wells.
French
filmmaker Georges Melies (1861-1938) is the subject of today's
Google Doodle, the first ever presented as a 360-degree
VR animation.
Melies
is an entirely fitting subject for this innovative new approach.
An
illusionist and stage magician before he turned his hand
to cinema in its earliest days in belle epoque Paris, he
was an extraordinary visual stylist and technician who is
still much admired a century on.
Best
known for the unforgettable image of a scowling celestial
body annoyed that a rocket ship has crashed into its eye
in A Trip to the Moon (1902), Melies was most recently seen
in Martin Scorsese's film Hugo (2011) where he was played
in old age by Sir Ben Kingsley.
He was born in 1861, the son of luxury shoemakers who -
after attending the prestigious Lycee Louis-le-Grand, completing
military service and serving an apprenticeship as a clerk
in London - shunned the family business to work as a conjurer
at the Theatre Robert-Houdin in Paris.
Here,
Melies developed a fondness for stagecraft and visual effects,
working with mechanical automata, trapdoors and lighting,
eventually selling his boot factory shares to his brothers
and buying the theatre outright.
After
seeing the Lumiere Brothers sensational moving picture camera
in action in 1895, Melies rushed out to establish his own
studio and began making films that featured clever illusions
and tricks created by experimenting with double exposure,
cutting and rewinding, building on his theatrical innovations.
Using
elaborate painted sets akin to those of Paris's music halls,
Melies was a true pioneer who played a key role in the evolution
of cinematic technique and the medium's storytelling grammar.
He also had an acute sensitivity for the sort of blockbuster
spectacle audiences would be attracted to.
Specialising
in horror and steam punk science fiction, taking inspiration
from the fiction of late Victorian visionaries Jules Verne
and HG Wells, his most famous film remains A Trip To The
Moon, which starred acrobats and dancers from the Folies
Bergere and the Chatelet ballet.
As
fantastic as this is, perhaps even more extraordinary is
the later Tunneling The English Channel (1907), in which
he effectively predicted the advent of Eurostar and the
Channel Tunnel.
Other
celebrated works including The Vanishing Lady, The Haunted
Castle (both 1896), The Astronomer's Dream (1898), Bluebeard
(1901), The Impossible Voyage (1904), The Merry Frolics
of Satan (1906) and Baron Munchausen (1911).
