3. April Linking Ring Salutes American Museum Of Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (USA)
The
cover story of the April issue of The Linking Ring, the
monthly magazine of the International Brotherhood of Magicians,
I.B.M., is a salute to the fortieth Anniversary of the American
Museum of Magic in Marshall, Michigan. Rick Heath's fifteen-page
article includes twenty-eight illustrations. This is a terrific
article and it makes you want to make a special effort to
visit the museum.
Other
features of the April issue of The Linking Ring include:
"Franco the Great," by Justin Style, about an
artist/magician in Harlem, New York City, who paints blindfolded;
"All is Grand," in which Randy Vander Wal gives
a preview of what Grand Rapids, Michigan and the Grand Plaza
Hotel offer those attending the I.B.M. Convention in July;
and "Magic, Clowning, & Cartoons," by Rachel
Struad, is the tale of Dal and Cinde Sanders of Dallas,
Texas and their successful dual careers.
The
Hocus Pocus Parade this month is from Paul Gordon, who brings
us fourteen of his original card effects. This is his second
One-man Parade for The Linking Ring. In Hocus In Focus this
month, reviewers bring us their opinions of nine DVDs, books,
and tricks new on the market. The Broken Wand pays tribute
to fourteen people who helped spread joy and laughter over
the years.
The
Linking Ring has some of the best Columnists in magic. In
the April issue you will find these Columns and columnists:
Bev Bergeron's Cutting Up Jackpots asks us, "Which
came first, the egg or the rubber chicken? This column is
"More of the Beginning of Standard Magic." Skip
Way's Polishing The Rings brings us "Video Lessons,"
about videos their Ring makes of magic lessons for Magic
Youth Raleigh; Carlos Adriano's Connecting With Kids tells
"In Praise of the Ridiculous," about getting down
to the children's level; and Kent Cummins writes "Picture
this: Video for Magicians," in his Marketing Magic
column.
More
Columns: "Comedy Script Writing" is the name of
Dr. Lynn Miner's column, Magic Words Matter; Craig Bettien
turns over his column, Petite Magia. to Eric Lewis, who
gives us "Modern Curious Cubes;" Scott Humston's
2-Minute Tips this month is about "Entering the Stage;"
this month Mike Powers gives his column, The Card Corner,
to Terry Hedges, who gives us "Subliminal Persuasion;"

Liberty," a miniature version of the famous David Copperfield
vanish of the real thing, in his column, Simple Diversions;
Michael Breggar turns over his Auto-Magic column to Michel
Potts, who gives us "Inexplicable;" and Dr. Lynn
Miner explains "Assessing Ring Member Satisfaction"
in his Ring Resources.

Linking Ring is a benefit of membership in the International
Brotherhood of Magicians. It is available in hard copy as
well as electronically. For more information, go to www.magician.org.

4. The Magic Word Podcast - Chip Romero - A Chip Off Of
Doug Henning
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
We
all stand on the shoulders of giants. And there has been
no more of a giant in our magic industry than the diminutive
Doug Henning. In this week's podcast of The Magic Word,
we are joined by noted Henning collector (and cruise ship
magician), Chip Romero. He has arguably the largest collection
of Doug Henning memorabilia in the world. And naturally,
he is the foremost authority on Doug, too. Chip chats about
his collection and debunks some Henning myths and sets the
record straight on a few things, too.
You
can see some photos of Chip and Doug Henning, read the blog,
listen to the podcast, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/415-chip-romero

What
got you into magic and performing for children? No, not
the tricks you saw or the magician at your birthday party.
I am also not even talking about the magic shop you may
have gone to when you were a child or the magic set you
got as a gift. What I am talking about is something deeper
that I like to think we all share. What is it inside of
us that make us realize that performing magic for children
is not just something we want to do... but something we
HAVE to do?
If
you look deep inside yourself you can probably pinpoint
a certain moment in time. A time perhaps when you realized
that even if you never got paid to perform for children,
you still would do it anyway because you just have that
desire to entertain kids.
But
I think something happens to many of us children's entertainers.
We seem to forget what got us into children's magic in the
first place. We seem to allow ourselves to get so hung up
on the show and the routines and the business and all the
aspects of what we do, that we forget why we are doing it
in the first place.
I
think this can be a big problem. The reason is that we then
just go through the motions of the performance when there
really is nothing there at all. There is no substance because
your heart is not really in it. And the most important part
of this is that the children know it. Children can read
us adults better than we give them credit for.
So
how can we stop ourselves from going down this path of forgetting
who we are and why we do what we do? First, I think it is
important for any children's performer to get in touch with
the inner child inside of us.
The
inner child is often hidden so much because as an adult
we fear that touching base with our inner child is .. well
childish and immature. We as adults feel that we cannot
show our inner child because that is not what adults do.
But as a performer we are forgetting something. We forget
that we are entertainers first and magicians second. We
are there to entertain the children in the best way possible.
If this is true, then isn't this the perfect time to let
your inner child out?
As
a children's performer we are given a great gift of opportunity.
Think about it. We are given the chance to act like a child
again and to do so freely. We are given the opportunity
to be silly and goofy and funny because we know the kids
react positively to it and can relate so well to it.
It
is also that inner child inside of us that we need to remember
when we are performing. How many times have you done so
many shows on the same day or the same week that you find
your mind is just not where it should be? Probably a lot
of you right now can recall times like this vividly. It
happens to us all.
The
problem is that if we are just going through the motions,
are we really giving the children and the client the best
show we can possibly give? It is times like this where we
need to go back to remembering why we got into performing
children's magic in the first place.
Every
show you do for a child you really must learn to stop yourself
for a second and think. If we think hard enough we can always
remember that there is probably a kid in that audience that
is seeing a magician for the very first time. The reality
is when we realize that magician they are seeing for the
first time is YOU! That is a very big deal.
When
I perform for children I keep a few signs in my cases. One
of them reminds me of this very fact. It helps me put my
mind where it needs to be to make sure that child goes home
thinking highly of the experience and of magic in general.
So
why do you perform for children? Think about it long and
hard and remember what your answer is before you perform
your next kid's show. I think you will realize just how
magical it really can be.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at KyleKellyMagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. Looking For Information On Stephen Long (Peachy Keene)
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (US)
Last
month I learned of the death of Stephen Long (Peachy Keene).
But I have not been able to find an official obituary on
the Internet, or a funeral home or newspaper. Also funeral
programs often have full obituaries. I am looking for the
details usually found in obituaries: full name, date of
death, where he lived, occupation, survivors, etc. If any
of you have seen any of these, please send it on.
Thank
you.

10. A History Of Magic eBook
--------------------------------------------
Message by David John O'Connor (Australia)
With
fraternal greetings from Brisbane. I have just completed
an A 4 - 177 page manuscript titled " A History of
Magic" that traces the lives and times of a number
of early famous magicians and includes some current famous
performers.
There
are about 60 essays or stories including a number of black
and white and coloured photographs that should appeal to
fellow magicians who have an interest in magical history.
I had initially intended to write it as a book but the cost
to have books printed was prohibitive, so am making the
manuscript available as an eBook. I have been working on
the project for just over 2 years and as each story was
completed I would forward it to Julian Mather's
magic forum at www.magictricksforkids.org where he placed
them up on their website under their History of magic.
It was a labour of love but I enjoyed the challenge of research
and writing the stories. Then I decided to write a book
for myself and family but found it just too costly. I am
charging $10 for the eBook download.
If
this is of interest please email me: David John O'Connor

A
full evening of magic and grand Illusion for the whole family
featuring, not one, but seven International magic stars!
For
the first time ever at Rooty Hill, GeniiCon International
Magician's Conference Sydney Australia presents a full evening
of Magic and Grand Illusion.
We've
gathered together not one, but seven International magic
stars hailing from the USA, UK and across Australia and
together they will present a hilarious and mind-blowing
night of visually spectacular magic.
Never
seen a lady sawn in half? Or classic magic where cards,
balls and even doves seem to just materialise at the magician's
fingertips?
We
have all that and more besides; we even have Australia's
top lady magician who channels Jeannie herself. We've got
comedy magic too, from the funniest guys in the business.
You'll be super close to the action, these seven, multi-award-winning
magicians have performed in the world's greatest showrooms
from the six-star cruise lines of the Caribbean to the biggest
stages in Las Vegas. This is your one and only opportunity
to see them right here in Sydney.
Magic
at the Tivoli is a fast and funny 2-hour show which is suitable
for the whole family from the young to the young at heart!
Don't delay, book today for Sydney's only grand magic spectacular.
The
Magicians:
Levent hails from the United States and starred in the Hollywood
TV series Masters of Illusion. His hilariously skillful
act would normally be seen only on the five and six-star
cruise ships of the Caribbean!
Jeannie
- Sue Anne Webster is not only channeling Barbara Eden,
she is authorised by the owners of the original show to
perform her charming and amazing Jeannie magic act.
For
something completely different, Silly Billy is New York's
finest family magician. It might be icky and sicky, but
he's a seriously silly guy.
Joel
Howlett has won every magic competition across Australasia
and this lead to him performing with his heroes on the grand
stages of Las Vegas. His breathtaking skills will attack
your senses.
Paul
Richards is a major creative force in magic, not only does
he invent some of the coolest tricks you've seen, he performs
them for major corporations right across the United States.
Sean
Taylor comes to us from the United Kingdom, (via Castle
Hill). A witty and clever corporate performer who has been
described as the best in his price range.
Brendan
Montanner and his grand Illusion show Magic to the Max has
been a firm Aussie favourite for more than 15 years. If
you've seen a lady sawn in half before, wait until you see
this guy and his glamorous assistants.
