4. The Magic Word Podcast With Bill Palmer, "Merlin The Wizard"

This week we have a long overdue chat with Merlin the Wizard. Bill Palmer portrayed Merlin at Renaissance Faires for over 25 years. Along the way, he became an internationally recognized magician in his own right as Bill Palmer, editor and publisher of books by Punx, Borodin and Ted Lesley. But most of you know Bill Palmer as the curator of the Cups and Balls Museum. His collection is massive to say the least.

The first part of our chat this week with Bill is a "mini lecture" with some great advice for loving your audience, creating a character, and more. We got so involved in chatting that I forgot to talk about his collection. So, at the end of the conversation, I tacked on an addendum discussion about his collection and what he intends to do with it. One of the great pleasures of being a magician is the chance to attend conventions. Seeing the pros perform and the newest of products for sale. The rush of emotions after seeing a performance and learning from a lecture.

However, we often forget what the real purpose is or should be. That to me is the ability to learn and share with others. How often we get caught up in new purchases that we forget to sit back, take it all in and just listen.

Listening is such an amazing thing if we allow ourselves to do it more often while at conventions. The ability to network with folks is wonderful. Old friends are great but the chance to make new ones is something special.

Do not be afraid to talk to strangers. They may be physical strangers but they still share the same love for the art of magic.

We can learn so much from chatting with people we meet at conventions and just finding out more about them and what they do.

Do not be afraid though to listen to what they have to say. Ask a question and listen to their answer. Right or wrong does not matter. It is the ability to converse and share thoughts on the art, that make it so worthwhile.

You always can learn from anyone if you so choose to do so. Conversing allows us to share what we love to do and learn from each other. Do not be afraid to help or offer an opinion. Likewise do not be afraid to seek help from others.

Everyone at a convention is worth your time. Young or old. Beginner or pro. It doesn't matter. We all are brothers in the art and can share, learn, empower and promote.

Many times, we allow ego to run things and that is never right. It is fine to be proud, but pride is different. Leave the ego at home and open yourself up to taking things in.

Too often we feel certain folks or types are too old for us or too young or too rebellious. Everyone has a story to tell and we all can learn from those stories.

So often people are afraid to simply talk to someone they do not know. Remember we all share a common love for magic and that alone is our ticket for open conversation.

We can all learn so much from simply opening ourselves up to enjoy a convention and enjoy the people that attend.
