--------------------------------------------
Message by Rick Ruhl published on Facebook
Just
heard from Luna that Deanna Shimada is on hundred percent
life support and is in a very critical condition.
Everyone
please send positive thoughts
.
I
know Luna, Tara, Ione and Adam are going through a very
rough time now.
I
love them like family.
No,
they are part of my family and this brings tears to my eye
and breaks my heart.
Deanna
Shimada is one of the kindest souls in the universe.
I've
known them over 40 years and this is so heartbreaking.

3. Broken Wand - Michael Bailey MIMC
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Penrose MIMC forwarded on by Brian Miller
(UK)
It
is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Past
President Michael Bailey MIMC (with Gold Star) on 6 November
2017. Michael was President of the Society between 1998
and 2003 and provided a pivotal role in helping to raise
the substantial funds required to purchase and build our
first fully owned headquarters in Stephenson Way, Euston,
opened in 1998.
Michael
had been a professional magician since 1971 and, coupled
with his background in advertising, is acknowledged as being
one of the key figures in adapting magic for a corporate
market. Having been at the forefront of his chosen field
in the UK, he published his book "The Magic Business"
which soon became the authoritative guide for working magic
in all aspects trade shows, product launches and business
seminars. He was also the author of "The Magic Circle:
Performing Magic Through the Ages" and co-edited the
centennial history, "Circle Without End: The Magic
Circle 1905-2005".
In
addition to his contribution towards helping members of
The Magic Circle achieve their seemingly unachievable dream
of owning their own Headquarters in London for the first
time, Michael was an Honorary Life member of the Society,
was awarded The Maskelyne for Services to British Magic
in 2003 and in 2005 was given The Gold Medal for exemplary
services to the Society, an honour that has only been awarded
ten times since its inception in 1926.
The
legacy of Michael Bailey is something to which members of
the Society past, present and future will be forever indebted.

4. MAGIC Live Online!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen
There's only one thing guaranteed when David Williamson
takes to the stage, and that is that laughter will be somehow
involved. And when he sat down with Jonathan Levit and Julie
Eng at MAGIC Live last August, there was certainly plenty
of laughter, but there were a few touching moments, as well.
There's even a surprise appearance by a special guest.
"Catching Up with David Williamson" is the second
in our collection of General Session talks available online.
I hope you enjoy these signature presentations from MAGIC
Live, as well as share them with your friends.

The next MAGIC Live is August 5-8, 2018. Registration is

5. Paul Lelekis - The King of Hearts
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Lelekis
"Killing
the Suicide-King Image"
Paul A. Lelekis
The
history of the cards is a favorite subject of mine. Many
magicians have had fun with their spectators by displaying
the King of Hearts apparently "
stabbing himself
in the head with a knife (or sword)!" But is he really
holding the sword?
Let's
take a closer look at the King of Hearts:
The
King of hearts is the
1) Only King with no moustache.
2) Only King with its own "suit" (Hearts) not
found on his clothing.
3) Only King (of ANY of the 12 face cards!) with "4
arms". (Actually, two of those arms have different
sleeves! That does seem strange
doesn't it?)
5) Only King with the Greek Key on his sash.
6) Only King whose sleeves that are visible!
7) Only King with no red coloring on his crown.
Other
Peculiarities of the King of Hearts:
Though
some sources claim that the King of Hearts was a representation
of King Charles VII of France (because he committed suicide
with a sword), this seems very unlikely. One big reason
is my observation in the next paragraph
If
you note the King of Hearts, you will find that the two
sets of arms have different sleeves
hence someone is
behind the King of Hearts, wielding the sword.
Therefore,
this actual situation can't be construed as suicide. In
addition, Charles the VII had no beard.
In
my studies, it is my claim that the King of Hearts is Charlemagne,
also known as Charles I, who settled the territories of
France and Germany. Charlemagne also had a beard with no
moustache, like the King of Hearts.
I
feel that the sword is a representation of Charlemagne's
younger brother, Carloman I, who hated him because he felt
Charlemagne was given everything by their father, leaving
him with nothing. Carloman was even heard saying that he
wanted to murder his brother.
Charlemagne
gave some of his European territory to Carloman I, however,
it was all "land-locked", which made trade by
water, impossible. This made Carloman's hatred of his older
brother, all the more intense.
Many
feel that Carloman wanted to murder Charlemagne, but died
at a very young age (around 19) of "unknown circumstances".
Carloman's
history is very "sketchy" and mostly forgotten.
His existence was all but "swept under the rug".
Details of his life have been "erased" so to speak,
from the history books
probably by order of Charlemagne.
This
omitting of Carloman I from the history books was a very
unusual practice by historians
particularly of Royalty.
The
"extra set of hands" on the King of Hearts could
be attributed to the wish of Carloman I to murder his brother.
No face
just a representation of murder.
This
history of the King of Hearts can provide quite a bit of
"fodder" for your patter presentations. I have
been using various historical references in my card magic
for many years and It always causes the spectators to pay
very close attention to what I'm saying!
Why
is this significant? For two reasons: 1) Spectators, particularly
women, are very interested in history
at least that
has been my experience, and 2) the "misdirection"
is profound! It has been my experience that historical,
"factual" references to the cards, not only provides
enormous misdirection, but great appeal!
Try
it out the next time you perform card magic
you will
be pleasantly surprised!

6. The Magic Word Podcast - Justin Flom
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
This week on The Magic Word Podcast we spend an hour with
Justin Flom, one of the creators of "Wizard Wars"
television game show on the SyFy channel in the U.S. Justin
talks about the importance of getting your message and brand
out in the social media and how it can lead to exciting
and lucrative opportunities. His "Soldier's Deck of
Cards" YouTube video went viral (with over 5MM views)
that led to his first network appearance that led to several
more then to finding an agent and to larger, profitable
engagements around the world.
Justin still spends a lot of time polishing his online social
profile and he talks about why others shouldn't overlook
this way of promoting oneself. He also talks about his success
along with Rick Lax of how they sold "Wizard Wars"
to the television network. He also tells us about how difficult
it is to get a show produced and given a "green light"
by a TV Network.
You can watch a few videos of Justin Flom, see some photos.

7. Through the Eyes Of A Child - #469 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com

As a children's performer, how often do we get lost in the
business of what we do? How many times do we worry about
the hyper kid or the parent who doesn't care? How many times
do we each call in a show simply because we are worried
about the trip home or the bills that have to be paid?
If
we are honest with each other, the answer is probably that
it does happen. Maybe not all the time, but we are only
human. We fall into these "traps" regardless of
what we do.
We
forget what it means to be a children's entertainer. We
forget the joy that we felt as a child watching magic happen
in front of us. We forget the amazed feelings we had seeing
something appear from nowhere. We lose track of the amount
of times we tried to make the magic happen ourselves yet
had no real clue how to do it.
I
recently had a rude awakening at a gig that brought all
of this back to my mind again. I was doing strolling magic
and this little 4-year-old boy was crying. I may never know
why, but he was not having a good time at all.
I
started doing some ball manipulations to the music the DJ
was playing. I was not paying much attention but out of
the corner of my eye I see the child inch closer and the
tears start to dry up. I started making the ball appear
under my hat and a smile formed on this kid's face.
For
5 minutes this child watched me as if magic to him was something
TRULY special. He stopped crying and was transfixed into
everything he was seeing me do. His laughter made me laugh.
His smile made me smile. His mother could not believe just
how engulfed her son was in what I was doing.
Now
I do not share this here as an ego thing. Instead I share
it because for those 5 minutes I saw magic through the eyes
of a child. I saw magic the way I remember seeing it so
many years ago. I remembered what it was like to just totally
believe in magic and to just allow oneself to be 'Entertained".
No more and no less...to be entertained and not only fooled.
Through
this child's own eyes, I got to feel like a kid again. But
most of all, I got to remember the POWER each children's
magician has inside of us. We have this ability we often
take for granted.
We
have the ability to make a child smile and laugh and forget
about things even for just a few moments. We are often times
the very first live magician that child may have ever seen.
It is our duty and our JOB to never allow ourselves to give
anything less than 100% effort every time out.
We
must remind ourselves to see magic through the eyes of a
child. We must remind ourselves of the joy magic can bring
to a young one and how we can shape how that child views
magicians from that day forward.
I
may never know what will become of that child I saw that
day. However, I do know that through his eyes, I saw magic
again the way I first felt when I was his age. I remembered
what being a children's performer is all about.
As
much as his mother thanked me, I should be thanking him
for allowing me to realize just how wonderful it is to do
what we do.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.
