5. The Magic Word Podcast - The Evasons
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
First
of all, let me apologize for the error with last week's
update. Episode #390 was not with Larry Jennings but rather
with Larry Becker. For some reason I had a "brain fart"
and submitted the wrong title to the New Zealand eZine.
I was not recording podcasts when Larry Jennings was alive,
but I'm sure that if I had, then it would have been a good
one. That does remind me, I do have a video recording of
an interview with Terry Seabrooke that might make for a
good future recording, if I can find it and transfer it.
But
this week's podcast features a pair of the world's leading
mind-reading entertainers, The Evasons. While in Las Vegas
for this year's MAGIC Live! convention, we sat down for
a chat about how Jeff and Tessa met, their former careers
as magicians on cruise ships, their evolution into their
current act, and Tessa's thoughts on having a leading role
in the two person act and being a female magician in a male
dominated profession.
You
can watch a video of the pair on their appearance on "Penn
& Teller Fool Us", see some candid and promo photos,
read the blog, listen to the podcast online, and download
the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/391-the-evasons

6. Pantomime - #466 - by Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com

The art of pantomime can be a wonderful tool for any magician
and I would recommend any student of magic to learn and
study it. I never once thought that my years of doing costume
character work would ever have any real purpose later on
with my magic, but it has been very valuable to me.
The
art of pantomime is the ability to tell or express emotion
or a story through the actions and body language of the
performer. There is no spoken word but only music if that.
Red Skelton (amongst others) was a genius of this art form
and literally could not only tell wonderful stories without
word, but his audiences new every single thing being expressed.
They
loved the characters he came up with and they felt sadness
and emotional responses just through the body language red
was giving to them. Although spoken word was never used,
props, expressions of the face and body language were. In
many cases these are the exact same things a magician uses
and can find him or herself with as well.
There
has been a lot I have learned over the years through the
study of pantomime. It started when I was doing costume
work and I came across it by accident. Basically I was never
allowed to talk while in costume or while in "character".
So I naturally had children wanting to know what I was doing
and I wanted to express things to them like hunger, excitement,
happy, sad, and laughter.
I
had no idea how to do this but started to try different
things. I realized that if I could not talk, I must express
my intentions through body language and movement. I soon
realized just how much could be expressed without saying
anything at all.
There
was an exercise that I used to do to train myself into creative
thinking with pantomime. With any art form we use for our
magic, you only get better at it if you study and practice
it. This exercise really has helped me to express my intentions
while on stage. It may help you.
The
basic idea is to write down single words that you think
may need to be expressed while on the stage or in your act
or show. These words may be such things as: sadness, confusion,
happiness etc. Tare literally thousands of words and ideas
you may want expressed, but I am sure you get the idea.
Now you start to figure out one word at a time. This focuses
your mind and keeps you on track. Do not get so overwhelmed
by trying to say or tell too much at once. Break it down
to its simplest parts.
Take
a single word on your list and video tape yourself doing
something in your show that expresses that word or idea.
I know this sounds weird but trust me here for a second.
Perform the idea and section onto video. Then watch it on
TV with one very big exception. Turn The Volume Off!
Watch
what you are doing and really study your movement. In many
cases you will start to realize that the body reacts and
moves in certain ways naturally to what you are saying and
doing. Study those movements. These movements are the things
that the body does in subtle ways to express certain ideas.
The idea now is to realize how the body reacts when it is
happy, sad, or confused.
The
problem then lies in the fact that the body knows that people
use many parts to convey an idea or feeling. Voice works
along side of sight and body movement to easily convey ideas
to people. The problem then lies in what happens when you
take some of those "helpers" away.
What
you end up realizing is that you can take the subtle movements
you studied, by watching yourself on video, and learn that
by amplifying those moves they can be expressed even without
voice.
For
example:
When you are confused, watch what your face and body does.
In most cases the head may tilt slightly, the eyes and eyebrows
may squint and you may hunch a bit in posture. If you amplify
this, then you can exaggerate these common traits and learn
to add tell tale signs to them to send the right singles
to the audience.
In
this case you would exaggerate the above signs but may add
to them. You might bring your hand up to your chin and rub
it in the state of pondering. You may switch your stance
and do it with the other hand as well. All of this adds
up to expressing an idea or emotion without voice.
So
how does this apply to magic? Well it can be used to tell
the audience your intentions on stage and send those intentions
to the person even in the farthest seat in the back.
If
you are doing diminishing cards, without word you can take
a card and use your index finger and thumb and start off
far apart and as you make them get closer, you hunch a bit
and you show a bit of expression of force. Just this simple
sign can be seen by the audience to say you are going to
make them smaller before anything else is even done.
I
hope this is of help to some and may get folks talking about
other ways in which you can tell your audience what you
are doing. If anyone would like me to go over some other
methods that I mentioned above, just let me know. It would
be my pleasure.
Because
I am also partially deaf, I have realized even more the
importance of being able to convey my magic to anyone at
any time. It has helped my magic a lot and allowed me to
share it with many others.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at Kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. McIlhany Magic Auction #2
--------------------------------------------
Message by David Goodman - The Magic Auctioneer
Auction
Results once again makes the McIlhany Magic Collection Disappear
at Auction on November 12th!
On
November 12th Auction Results, in conjunction with Owen
Magic Supreme, will conduct the second auction of the exquisite
magic collection of William H. McIlhany (1951-2017). Internet
bidding is available at https://www.liveauctioneers.com/catalog/110916_mcilhany-s-magical-mysteries-ii-nov-12th/.
The downloadable catalog is available at: http://www.magicauctioneer.com/mcilhany-auction.html.
Telephone and Absentee bidding can also be arranged by calling
626-969-4519.
Bill
McIlhany was the consummate collector of all things magical
and was considered one of the most knowledgeable magic collectors
in the world. His mind-boggling collection ranged from rare
pieces of early 19th - and 20th-century masters to spectacular
quality modern-day apparatus.
His
fine collection, which includes apparatus, automatons, lithographs,
books, periodicals, catalogs so much more will be offered
at auction.
Auction
#2 will be a 1 day event and will include treasures from:
Conradi, Bland, Thayer, Willmann, Klingl, Okito, Bartl,
Hamley, Owen Magic Supreme, Carl Williams, Grant, Ruediger
Deutsch, Eric Lewis, Anverdi, Abbott, Himber and so much
more.
One
of the prized items is the Saturday session is Mechanical
Hofzinser 52 Card, McIlhany had this custom made after seeing
Ken Klosterman Hofzinser Card Rise that Charles Kalish had
copied from the original in the Library of Congress. This
remarkable piece of apparatus was apparently constructed
for Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser (1806-1875) by his Viennese
mechanic, Kurz, in the early 1840's. This automaton would
allow for Hofzinser to have any card out of a 32 card pack
rise from the box when called for by the audience. Joe Young
from Wyoming, OH was a retired GE aerospace prototype builder
who re-built parts of Ken's box to make it work properly.
When Ken introduced McIlhany, Young showed them his inspiration
of making the illusion better, by building a box to hold
all 52 cards in a pack, not just the 32 cards from the original
design.
In
addition to the electronic version that Young made, he also
designed this completely mechanical version. Joe claimed
that he spent over 500 hours in creating this masterpiece.
Bill said that this was built like a tank but ran like a
fine swiss watch.
Also
of great interest are two large, thick scrapbooks containing
an important archive of many hundreds of news clippings
concerning stage magic in the United Kingdom from roughly
1930 to 1970, with most being from the 1930's-50's. Stories,
photos, theater ads and press reviews by and about many
famous personalities of British magic, including: Houdini,
David Devant, Will Goldston, Horace Goldin, Cecil Lyle,
Dante, Kalanag, Robert Harbin, David Nixon, David Berglas,
and many, many more. All neatly clipped and pasted. A remarkable
collection that could never be duplicated.
For
automaton collectors, there is a wonderful Bontemps large
Trio of Singing Birds. Created by Lucien Bontemps in Paris
circa 1870, this is among his largest and most spectacular
"singing bird" clockwork automatons. Inside the
beautifully gilded and decorated 22 inch tall cage, three
colorful birds move, chirp and sing in unison. The birds
are exquisitely decorated with real feathers and appear
truly lifelike in their actions and sounds.
Another
piece attracting attention is the Vanishing Gramophone made
by Bartl in the part of the 20th century. This is a remarkable
piece of apparatus. This effect was featured by several
performers during the first decades of the twentieth century,
most notably English illusionist, Cecil Lyle. In performance,
a wind-up gramophone is shown atop a beautiful wood stand.
A 78 rpm record is placed on the turntable and starts playing
a rousing march tune.
A
large foulard is thrown over the machine and while it is
still playing, the gramophone is lifted under the cloth
and carried forward. Suddenly, the magician tosses the cloth
in the air, the music instantly stops, and the gramophone
vanishes completely. This is a mechanical masterpiece. Unknown
to the audience, the faux gramophone atop the stand folds
neatly into the tabletop. The music is provided by a duplicate
spring-wound phonograph concealed in the record storage
cabinet at the bottom of the stand. A mechanical foot switch
turns the phonograph on and off to stop the music when desired.
It is extremely rare.
The
sale will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific time, 1:00 p.m. Eastern.

12. MINDvention 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Danny Archer (US)
The
2017 edition of MINDvention mentalism convention will take
place in Las Vegas from November 12th-14th. This is the
fourteenth edition of this convention and it is aimed at
anyone interested in the art of mentalism.
This
year, the producers are pulling out all the stops and have
booked a fantastic line-up of talent including; Bruce Bernstein,
Jeff McBride, Larry Hass, Eugene Burger, Ross Johnson, Richard
Osterlind, Eric Samuels, Docc Hilford, Rick Maue, Chad Long
and Michael Weber and Gregg Tobo.
The
day after the convention ends, a full day workshop is being
offered by Bernstein and Hilford. Three full days of shows,
lectures, panel discussions and more, all on the topic of
mentalism. Chad Long is getting ready to release a new lecture
of mentalism for Penguin magic and MINDvention will be the
first ones to see it. Bruce Bernstein is the go to guy for
many of the top workers when they want something new and
fresh and his lecture and show are both must see events
for any looking for commercial hard-hitting mentalism.
There
are too many great acts to list each one separately, but
any way you slice it, it still adds up to a great three
days in one of the most exciting cities in America.
