The
World's Highest-Paid Magicians Of 2017: David Copperfield
Leads With $61.5 Million
Nearly
50 years ago, a 12-year-old David Seth Kotkin became the
youngest person ever admitted to the Society of American
Magicians. Now, the performer better known by his stage
name David Copperfield is the world's highest-paid magician
for the second year in a row, earning $61.5 million pretax
in the 12 months to June.
The
living legend, whose greatest illusions include walking
through the Great Wall of China and making the Statue of
Liberty disappear, performed a stunning 621 shows in Las
Vegas during our scoring period. He also mints millions
from exclusive tours and concerts on Musha Cay, his private-island
resort. Copperfield owns 11 private islands in the Bahamas.
Copperfield's secret to success is simple. He told Forbes
in 2016 that he refused to give up even when others doubted
his illusions would work. "I get told 'no' every day,"
Copperfield said. "'No' has become a great source of
inspiration."
His
persistence has paid off in more ways than one. Copperfield
is worth an estimated $850 million by FORBES' count.

4. MAGIC Live Online!

Message by Stan Allen
For the first time, we're releasing a few of our favorite
talks online. You're welcome to enjoy these signature presentations
from our General Sessions, as well as share them with your
friends. We begin with Abbey Goldrake, whose amazing talk
in 2017 was truly inspirational.
On October 15, 2015, while in rehearsal, Abbey and husband,
David Goldrake, were involved in a serious accident when
an illusion failed, leaving Abbey a quadriplegic. With a
broken neck, she has fought for the ability to breathe,
walk, tie her shoes, and much more. But she has fought the
hardest to return to the stage, which she did in August
2017 at MAGIC Live! Witness her return, as Abbey shares
her story, a few tears, and a lot of laughs.

General Registration for the next MAGIC Live, August 5-8,
2018, opens November 7th, Noon PT.

5. Magic Word Podcast - Alan Howard: New M.U.M. Editor
--------------------------------------------
Message by Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
During
the past weekend, we held a memorial service for the late
John Moehring, former editor of MAGIC Magazine and the M.U.M.
Many people attended the event and hundreds more viewed
the service online as it was Live Streamed on Facebook.
Dozens of people traveled hundreds of miles to honor the
life of this venerable magician. One of the attendees was
Alan Howard who had just signed the contract as the new
editor of the S.A.M.'s journal, M.U.M. He will begin his
new duties with the January 2018 issue, so the "get
ready" time is short.
In
this week's podcast, Alan talks about his history as a juggler,
editor of "Juggle" magazine, performing on cruise
ships, and, of course, he tells us some stories about his
good friend, John Moehring. We also chat with Charlie Randall,
former co-owner of H&R Magic Books, who shares some
stories about his friendship with John.
You
can watch a video of the memorial service plus a special
presentation put together by Gary Plants, view some photos,
read the blog. listen to some product reviews, listen to
the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/389-alan-howard
And
be sure to enter the contest for a chance to win a copy
of the hardback book by David Garrard, "Out of My Hat",
a $100 value.

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
S.A.M.
Hall of Fame inductee and legendary mentalist, Larry Jennings,
joins us this week on The Magic Word Podcast. Larry no longer
performs nor is he involved with the marketing of the line
of original mentalism products from Mentalism Unlimited.
Larry moved to the Phoenix, Arizona area many years ago
after selling his company in New Jersey and became a full
time performing mentalist. But now, at 88, he has "hung
up his nail-writer." But in this podcast, Larry talks
about his history and some stories along the way.
You
can watch a video of him performing his "Casino Royale",
see some photos, read the blog, listen online and download
the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/390-larry-becker
This
week we congratulate Matt Furtado, the winner of our contest
for a copy of the hardback book, "Out Of My Hat"
by David Garrard, a $100 value! And thank you to all who
entered the contest. Please watch for our next contest!

7. Paul A. Lelekis - Performance and Magic Etiquette
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul A. Lelekis (US)
http://lybrary.com/paul-a-lelekis-m-163788.html
Years
ago (when I was younger!), I had many much more experienced
magicians say "Why do you use so many tricks! All you
need are six or seven when you do close-up! That way you
have a group of tricks that you know!"
There
is much wisdom to the above quote, but I have always loved
to learn new tricks and practice them - and then perform
them. Notice that I said to practice them, and then perform
them!
If
there were tricks that didn't have the 'impact' that I wanted,
I tried to figure out why they didn't work as well.
Also,
I don't bother my family and friends with a new trick
I try them out on REAL spectators - which, by the way is
actually easier to do.
If
a trick doesn't "go over" big with a friend, family
member, or another magician - don't worry about it! You
will, very probably, be getting a 'resistant response' because
they feel comfortable enough with you to "call you"
on virtually anything, whether it is right or wrong.
I've
seen many 'newbies' get discouraged about a trick because
it didn't 'fool' an experienced magician. That newbie learned
the trick 3 minutes earlier and then would say "Aww
this trick doesn't work!"
If
my new trick didn't have the impact I wanted, I would examine
why it didn't work. Not just toss it, storing it in my "magic
junk-pile room".
Most
of the time I found it was, perhaps the patter, or the way
I performed the sleights (performing them badly!), or usually
the timing.
At
any rate, I wanted to know why. I have had magicians watch
me perform an effect and then immediately want me to teach
it to them.
Ten
minutes later they came back and told me, "Oh I don't
like that trick - everyone knew how it worked!"
They
had just performed a trick for another magician (and performed
it badly!) and couldn't understand that their performance
was amateurish, the patter was stumbling, and the sleights
were not well practiced. Of course they figured it out!
I
was always impressed with how Michael Skinner (who loved
to perform for other magicians), could not only "fool"
them
but "fool" them with tricks that they
already knew!
This
intrigued me and I set out to dissect my routines and figure
out every little point in my effects that would "signal"
something to spectators, as well as magicians.
I
can't always fool magicians, but I can and do fool lay people
all the time
because I Pay Attention to Detail!
Getting
back to Michael Skinner
Michael not only practiced
a lot to perform his sleight of hand beautifully with interesting
patter - but he always took that extra step, that he needed
to fool magicians.
For
instance, Skinner loved to perform his version of Wild Card
for magicians. His patter was interesting and fun
However,
he ended "dirty", and would mutter that he "needed
something" as he went to his pockets, switching out
the "dirty" cards for another packet.
But
it didn't end there! He tossed the switched, examinable
packet onto the table as he continued "looking for
something", continuing his quest.
Sure
enough, a magician (knowing that Michael wasn't 'paying
attention'), would dive for the packet, finding just regular
cards. I've actually seen the above happen to Michael
to a well-known magician!
Realize
that magicians aren't stupid - tacky maybe - but not stupid.
They then knew that Skinner had baited them and, hopefully,
learned a good lesson in etiquette amongst each other.
It
got to the point where no magician would ever mess with
Skinner's cards, props or whatever because he could easily
make them look stupid
Michael Skinner was always
prepared!
This
is a good lesson in "magician's etiquette" always
enjoy the performances of your fellow magicians without
trying to be a heckler!
Also
don't be the type who will "act" as if he knows
how the trick works and be almost indignant about it.
If
you don't know how that person's trick worked, ask him or
her! Don't be the type who will act as if they already know
how it worked and then, as my good friend, Rick Carruth
of The Magic Roadshow, says "run home and Google it
for the next magic meeting!"
Rick
Carruth is owner of one the finest online magician's periodicals
in the world, The Magic Roadshow! Get it!
Magic
amongst people of "like" interest should share
and help each other out. Don't feel as if people will think
you to be "dumb" it's all a part of learning and
becoming better magicians!
It
is a good feeling to know that one has performed well enough
to make people marvel at one's performances
but always
keep in mind that your goal is to entertain them and to
take them out of their 'known' universe and into another
universe where things are very different!
We,
as magicians, should support and help each other with details
of performance, patter, sleights, and different effects.
This
will make us all look good and will open new worlds! There
are many "finer points" about performance that
you might miss
or just be totally unaware of, until
you ask and share with another magician!
Make
it a point at your next magic meeting to share with each
other and you might be surprised at the outcome!
I've
said this many times before
Your Magic Is Secondary!
How you make your spectators Feel is primary! This is what
will make your performances impressive and memorable!

8. The Art of Applause - #465 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
Kylekellymagic@gmail.com
KPmagicproducts.com
Why
do we do magic? Why do we go on stage and present illusions
hoping that the audience accepts us? There is no single
answer to this question. We all do it for different reasons.
However, at the very heart of most answers comes this overwhelming
feeling you get from a simple word... "Applause!".
There
is nothing quite like the empowerment and energy you get
when the audience burst into applause. That instant gratification
of acceptance from them fills every fiber of who we are
like a good drug, only natural and not harmful. It is this
emotional high that simply cannot be explained until you
have witnessed it yourself.
But
why is it then that so many magicians simply do not allow
the audience to applaud them? Sounds odd doesn't it? Now
in most cases this is not intentional in the least. However
it is the way and manner in which the magician conducts
him or herself on stage, that simply does not allow the
audience a chance to respond at all. I hope to explore this
a bit and give some insight on why this happens as well
as what you can do to remedy it.
One
thing to note is that as a magician you need to also learn
that you have the power to manipulate an audience. You can
directly control what they do and how they react to you
much more then you may realize. The problem is that audiences
are not always sure when to applaud you. They get uncomfortable
not knowing if they are interrupting etc. The single best
thing you can remember is that you can direct their applause
and train them without them realizing it.
Too
many magicians simply do not give their audience a chance
to respond in the first place. This is the single most overlooked
aspect to why magicians do not get the reactions they seek.
You are simply not giving them a chance to. When you perform
you are so locked up in the moment that 1 of 2 things happen.
1) you tend to race the routine because you are trying to
recall 2 steps ahead of where you really are and 2) you
are wrapped up in the performance that you forget to pause.
A
simple solution that has been taught to me many times over
the years is a simple method in which you BUILD into the
act pauses. Just like any part of your act or routine, you
build in and script pause on purpose. This forces you to
slow down and it also gives the audience a moment to 1)
catch their breath and relax 2) absorb the magic that they
have just seen and 3) give them a chance to applaud you
for it.
It
is a deep psychological thing amongst humans that if an
entertainer is pausing for even a 3 second count, that the
audience just feels this need and desire to applaud. Try
it and you will see what I mean. If after a segment you
simply look up and smile and pause for even 3 seconds, watch
what happens. You will be pleasantly surprised.
Another
tip is the ability to strike an applause pose. Now this
does not mean every 30 seconds you stand there with arms
outstretched looking like some crazy lunatic. It simply
means that there are ways in which you can hold your body
that really tends to say to the audience "this is a
time to applaud". This can be as simple as a slight
bow and nod of the head.
But
what about the end of the performance? Why do so many magicians
run off stage so quickly or have the curtains close so fast?
I never quite understood that. I was talking to a famous
magician at a convention once. As we were gathered around
someone asked how he always got great applause and standing
ovations. His answer floored everyone but made perfect sense.
He simply said, "I demand it of them and I go out there
and ask them for it!".
What
he meant was so many magicians think their act is done when
they finish the end effect. That is simply not the case.
If you want applause, do not be in such a hurry to run off
stage. Stay out there and bow. If you simply stay out there
afterwards and bow the audience will clap for you. Give
them a chance to do so.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

12. 34th New Zealand Magic Convention Review #1
--------------------------------------------
Message by Bernard Reid (NZ)
Having
just arrived home from the convention I couldn't sleep,
I had to pen a few words. As with the previous convention
in Wellington this was phenomenal. Fabulous comraderie,
superb guest artists, sensational lectures, an absolute
magician's dream however, this is not what I wanted to write
about as all attendees know what they experienced.
What
I do want to talk about is:-
The
Show. As far as I can ascertain, this is the very first
time a magic show has been produced in New Zealand of a
truly global professional standard. This production was
nothing short of pure genius. Before talking of the performers
let me explain why this is so.
Nopera Whitley is smart enough to know that for a show to
tour and charge top dollar it has to be of a global standard
and requires professionals at every level which means massive
financial investment and commitment.
He
did not scrimp at any phase which is why this worked so
brilliantly. A composer was contracted to write original
music which was then recorded by some members of the New
Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The score was fabulous and captured
the mood eloquently.
A professional producer/director was employed to put it
together and it showed. Slick, hesitation and error free,
it rolled like clockwork. I was in total shock when I looked
at my watch at the end of the show and realised I had been
in the theatre for over two hours. It seemed like 20 minutes.
A real tribute to the production techniques and prowess.
A professional lighting designer was employed to add mood,
visual image and character to the performance and this contributed
greatly.
Five
acts of contrasting and unique styles made up the programme.
Because they were so uniquely different they complimented
each other which created a very unusual situation as this
show had equally as much appeal to a layman as it did to
a magic purist, a situation most would think would be unattainable.
It was exciting to see and feel a lay audience's reaction
to things we as magicians would applaud for a totally different
reason. To experience a card worker like Shin Lim hold a
packed 1400 seat theatre spellbound was a thrill to me as
a performer.
The
brilliance of incorporating Charlie Frye and Sherri as a
respite from the onslaught of magic enhanced the show considerably
and the most telling point of all
.
Here was a show with no big illusions, no box hoppers, no
women impaled, dissected, halved, levitated, or penetrated
it relied on one thing
Pure Magic ... which is what
it was to magicians and lay people alike
Pure Magic.
Bravo
Nopera, Nicola and the team you put together to produce
a show of world class calibre.
Admittedly
the road tour is brief (two nights Palmerston North, two
nights New Plymouth and four nights Auckland) but if you
didn't attend the convention and witness this show, then
mortgage your house to see it, you won't be disappointed.

Message by Don McCoy (US)
I
have attended many Magical Conventions over the past 60
years but have never left one with as big a smile as I have
today and with memories that will last a lifetime.
The
talent that was invited to perform and to lecture was World
Class and Rob Zabrecky, Charlie Frye, Hector Mancha, Dan
Sylvester, Shin Lim and Colin Cloud were more than generous
when sharing their ideas and staging philosophies with all
of us. From Rob Zabrecky, I learned, I was entertained and
practical, creative thinking filled the room. Zabrecky has
a brilliant mind.
I'll
be making plans to attend the 35th New Zealand Convention
in 2019 Again, thank you, Alan and Michele, now on to spend
a couple of weeks touring your gorgeous country before returning
to The Magic Castle.
