3. The Magic Word Podcast - MAGIC Live! Updates Plus Tom
Frank
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Wow!
What a week it has been! I was so busy last week in Las
Vegas that I had zero time to notify you of the daily podcast
updates I was posting from MAGIC Live! But for those of
you who are already following The Magic Word through Facebook
or subscribed to the podcast or read any of my recent posts
here on the New Zealand e-zine, then you are all caught
up. But for those of you who are not and who would like
to feel as if you were there (or to relive the convention
experience), then visit https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/
and look for the four daily updates that include chats with
organizer, Stan Allen, as well as many of the performers,
dealers and registrants, like Marvyn "Mr. Electric"
Roy, John Archer, David Copperfield and many, many more.
I lost a lot of sleep just for you so you could feel the
experience. I hope you enjoy the updates.
This
week we take a break between conventions (next week I will
attend the Texas Association of Magicians (T.A.O.M.) convention
in Dallas, Texas) and dip back into my recordings that I
have been withholding for a while. We chat with Tom Frank
about earning extra income from your "Back of the Room"
sales during your performances, his experience as a street
performer at Universal Studio's "City Walk", his
ownership of a brick-and-mortar magic shop, his work on
making cups, learning from famed street performer, Cellini,
and much, much more. You can watch a video of our conversation
that was streamed live on Facebook, see some photos, hear
our conversation, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/378-tom-frank
During
the MAGIC Live! convention, we experienced a "bump"
in listeners as well as attracting a few new financial supporters.
So, this week, we welcome Craig Blackwood, Andrew Portala,
Andy Martin, Chris Morrison, and Dan Shedd. Welcome, guys,
and thank you for your support in helping to keep this podcast
going.

4. Conveying And Using Personality - #458 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

I posted recently on Facebook asking a simple question.
What is one of the best qualities or traits you feel makes
for a good magician and why? It was an interesting discussion
that brought about a lot of great answers and opinions.
However, one item kept coming up by many people. It is a
single word called "personality". It was so great
seeing so many folks give value to personality over other
things.
I really think personality is so underrated in magic today.
People just simply forget the power it has in everything
we do. A trick is just a trick. The people want to like
you. If you take the same trick and place it in the hands
of someone who has and conveys personality and then someone
who does not, it looks like a totally different effect to
a lay audience. It really is that stunning to see happen.
Tricks alone do not really mean anything by themselves.
A trick will not happen or work without the magician. Place
a deck of cards on a table and they are not going to start
doing an ACR routine by themselves. If they do, then start
to run real quick. It is YOU that makes the difference and
it is YOU that makes the magic happen. If this is the case,
then focus should be on you and not the prop or trick you
are presenting.
But what is it about you? It is your personality that really
makes the audience enjoy the experience and enjoy you in
the process.
I honestly feel that people want to be entertained way more
than they want to be fooled. People want to walk away having
had fun with the experience of what they just saw happen.
Take some of the best acts out there today. Take a look
at the ones that you really love to watch perform. It is
safe to say that you enjoy them because 95% of their act
is not solely based on the magic alone. There is more to
what they provide isn't there? The good entertainers are
that way because a majority of their act is interacting
with the audience in a comical entertaining way, engaging,
dialogue, connecting, talking. etc. It is the essence of
their personality that makes you enjoy what they do.
It is interaction and expressing personality. It is taking
the audience on a journey and getting them laughing and
having fun instead of just seeking the WOW only.
I think that is key. If you could take away the trick in
any performance, and safely say the routine is still entertaining,
then I think you have something. Take away the props and
the trick and then look at what that performer does. I can
safely say the entertainers that "get it" are
the ones who without any of these props, can still entertain
and audience and have them enjoying every minute of it.
This is the essence and importance of personality in magic.
There is a quote that was shared to be by my good friend
Dan Birch. Dan said the quote goes like this. "If they
walk away saying remember the trick that the magician did,
then I have failed. But if they say remember the magician
who did that trick, then I have succeeded." I was so
glad Dan shared this with me because it got me thinking
that it is your personality that makes them remember you.
I think that is a key to developing a likeable character.
Some magicians try to focus so much on the trick only that
they are void of any personality at all. I want the audience
remembering me not my deck of cards.
No one is saying not to have the tricks. What we are saying
is that the focus of any performance should not be on the
trick itself. The trick is just a prop. The focus should
be on personality and using that personality to truly take
the effect to an entertaining level. It is giving the audience
more to enjoy. You add personality into what you do and
I guarantee your audiences will thank you for it.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

6. Corporate & Trade Show Workshop
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone
Unique
Magic Events presents a Corporate & Trade Show Workshop
on Wednesday 13th September at Jury's Inn Hotel in Liverpool.
Whether you are already an established Corporate Show performer
or Trade Show worker and would like to significantly increase
your client list and earnings or are a performer who is
new to this lucrative side of the magic business and would
like to find out how to earn a six-figure income every year
then you need to be at this life changing event!
The
Corporate & Tradeshow Workshop is bringing together
for one day only a team of top International performers
with unrivalled experience and success in the corporate
world, Trevor Liley, Seth Kramer, Nick Lewin, Bob Kohler
& Paul Stone.
The
information, methods and advice that they will share with

fee. The chances of having such an experienced and knowledgeable
group of performers together in one room are extremely rare,
so if you are genuinely serious about being successful in
the Corporate world then you do not want to miss this outstanding
opportunity! Space is limited to just 50 delegates and there
are only 10 spaces still available.
The
program will include Trevor Liley's Trade Show Masterclass,
which he is presenting at a magic event for the first time
ever. Priceless information from this Corporate 'Guru' on
how to build a lucrative Corporate magic business and take
your earnings to a whole new level!
Seth
Kramer will lecture and also perform his Trade Show pitch
'live' for all the delegates. Seth has been without doubt
one the most successful Trade Show workers in USA for the
past 30 years and is the author of the Modern Tradeshow
Handbook, the recognised 'bible' for Trade Show performers.
This
event will also feature expert panel sessions with Trevor
Liley, Seth Kramer, Nick Lewin, Bob Kohler, and Paul Stone
covering topics in depth which will include how to break
into the lucrative corporate world of Trade Shows, Hospitality
Suites, Product launches, VIP Receptions, Conferences /
Conventions, Motivational Speaking and Trade Charity events
& Fundraisers.

7. Genii Convention 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman (US)
What
Is The "Genii" Convention?
It's
Simply This: Great Magic, And Lots Of It.
Welcome
to registration for the third bi-annual Genii Convention.
Our first two conventions, in 2012 and 2015, were acclaimed
by many as among the best magic experiences they've ever
had. The enthusiasm of the attendees makes it a pleasure
for me to organize, and all of us at Genii thank you deeply
for that. Nothing gives me more motivation than the standing
ovations we have at every show, and all thanks to you!
You will not have to choose between events at The Genii
Convention: you will be able to see every performance and
lecture on 9 x 16 foot hi-definition video screens in our
main showroom, with close-up magic performed in intimate
venues around the hotel.
I strive to book new magicians and lecturers, many of whom
you may have read about in Genii but have never seen perform
live before. Our convention in 2017 will be no different,
with new performers from the west coast and Europe who don't
just do one or two tricks, but are given the time to really
show off their best work often in 45 to 60-minute one-man
shows. Welcome to the 2017 Genii Convention
I promise
it will be a great one.

10. MINDvention 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Danny Archer (US)
The
2017 edition of MINDvention mentalism convention will take
place in Las Vegas from November 12th-14th. This is the
fourteenth edition of this convention and it is aimed at
anyone interested in the art of mentalism. This year, the
producers are pulling out all the stops and have booked
a fantastic line-up of talent including; Bruce Bernstein,
Jeff McBride, Larry Hass, Eugene Burger, Ross Johnson, Richard
Osterlind, Eric Samuels, Docc Hilford, Rick Maue, Chad Long
and Michael Weber and Gregg Tobo.
The
day after the convention ends, full day workshop is being
offered by Bernstein and Hilford. Three full days of shows,
lectures, panel discussions and more, all on the topic of
mentalism. Chad Long is getting ready to release a new lecture
of mentalism for Penguin magic and MINDvention will be the
first ones to see it. Bruce Bernstein is the go to guy for
many of the top workers when they want something new and
fresh and his lecture and show are both must see events
for any looking for commercial hard-hitting mentalism.
There
are too many great acts to list each one separately, but
any way you slice it, it still adds up to a great three
days in one of the most exciting cities in America.
