We are very sad to report that a very generous benefactor and magician Gene McCarthy (also known as Red) originally from Texas and living in Auckland, New Zealand, passed away suddenly on Tuesday 18th July.

Gene McCarthy Director of International Entertainment established a youth fund for up and coming magicians to attend conventions, workshops and lectures which he asked me to administer on his behalf. He generously made contributions of $10,000 a year for many years to this fund for these young people from New Zealand and Australia.

Gene booked over a lengthy period major entertainers from overseas to tour which helped inspire magicians from down under and gave our communities a love of magic and the allied arts. The Company's fundraising along with Lions and Rotary raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for many charities over the years.

Gene was a very caring and generous person who loved our art and he didn't expect anything in return. We will miss him.

--------------------------------------------

Joshua Jay (USA) stayed with Michele and I when he was 17 years old on his previous lecture tour in New Zealand and we knew then that he was destined for greatness and he didn't disappoint when he returned this week with his wife Anna. He is lecturing Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. A comment I heard after the Auckland lecture was "one of the best lectures I've ever seen".

If you are planning a Convention and you are looking for a headliner we would have no hesitation in recommending Joshua Jay; his lecture inspires beginners, amateurs and professionals and there's something there for everybody. He has incredible passion for our art which is very infectious to all that attend.

Is there power behind the simple phrase "Thank You!"? Is there something about those two words that every magician should know, understand and use? My answer to that is a simple. YES! There is power behind saying thanks and there are more benefits from it than most people may know.

Sure there is instant gratification between you and the person you are thanking, but there is even a far more powerful thing that every magician can use. It is realizing that Thank You can be a tool in your marketing tool box. You can use these two simple words to really expand your marketing at the event and long after the event is over. Allow me to explain.

Every client I work for, I always make it a policy of not only saying Thank You, but physically showing it to them in a written format and a visual display. If my goal is to be a professional at all times and increase my perceived value to the client, then this is something I should get into the habit of always doing.

Think about it this way. If you hire a contractor to come to your house to set up a sun room, and then that person says Thank You and then also sends you a thank you letter or card in the mail, will you not recall that person? Chances are you will not only remember them but you may possibly refer them or use them again in the future. There is power in thanks.

I like to do several things at every event I perform at. I first make up a Thank You Kit. This is a simple kit that I make ahead of time and includes the following:

- A Thank You letter - This is a personalized thanks from me to them for having me at their event. But the letter also goes on explaining the importance of referrals and encouraging them to do so. It also talks about the evaluation form and how that form helps me to deliver quality to all my clients.

- Evaluation Form - This is a very simple (but direct) evaluation form that is set up with 6-7 questions in multiple choice fashion. It is also constructed and worded in such a way that it encourages the client to add in and give me comments along the way. It is easy to fill out to encourage them to do so.

- SASE - I make it as easy on them as possible to want to return the form back to me. The SASE is set up ready to go.

- Business cards - I can easily place a few business cards into the flap of the SASE. These then can be used by the client.

- A small gift - You can get so many gifts these days that do not cost you very much. However, in the eyes of the client, receiving even a simple gift means a lot to them.

This is in essence my thank you kit. But the power for me is in how I deliver the thank you kit to the client. I do it as a part of the show itself. At the end of the event I would bring up the birthday child (for example) and their parent. I would then state that we would not be here having so much fun if it were not for these special folks who invited us. I then have the entire audience say Thank You to the client and have the child hand the thank you to their parent and say thank you to them.

This works amazingly well. It really shows the client that you care and that you are far different than most magicians. It is going that extra step to have your perceived value climb in their mind. They will remember and thank you for doing so and there also is a greater return rate for the forms being sent back to you by doing this.

It is also nice to know that after you have left the event, your name will be fresh in their mind as they open and read the letter and look over the thank you kit that you presented to them. They will also remember you from the simple gift you gave to them.

Is there power in Thank You? Absolutely. Use it and the ideas expressed here and try it for yourself. I think you will be very happy with the results.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

6. Istanbul Magic Festival - 8th, 9th & 10th September 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lee Alex

The first "Istanbul Magic Festival" in Europe's most magical city will bring together magicians from Turkey and surrounding countries for two days of competitions, lectures, workshops, dealers and a myriad of entertainment.

The festival is the creation of local celebrity magician Kubilay "QB" Tunçer and Velox Festival, an independent organisation company which has a vast experience in organising events in all fields of entertainment in Turkey.

Victor Vaitkus (UKR) and Miguel Angel Gee (ESP) headline the festival alongside Vladimir Mikel (SVN) and Lee Alex (GB). Local talent has also been engaged to provide a wide variety of magic in all genres.

Over $2,000 USD value of prizes will be awarded to winners in the Close-up and General Stage Magic competitions, which will be judged by both expert magicians and a panel of selected non-magicians. Each competition will be limited to a maximum of 10 pre-selected competitors who will perform in front of their peers and the general public.

The Istanbul Magic Festival kicks off on Friday 8th September with a welcome cocktail at the festival hotel, followed by "Istanbul Evening" dinner in the city. This extra event includes a menu of Turkish specialties and local spirits accompanied with traditional Turkish entertainment (belly dancer) and live music, an open close-up magic session, "Meet & Greet" with the star guests of the Istanbul Magic Festival, and socialising with local and foreign magicians.

Registration for the 2 day festival is a very reasonable €50 Euro, the "Istanbul Evening" an extra €20 Euro. Accommodation at the festival hotel starts at €15 Euro per person including breakfast.

Turkish Airlines offer direct flights to Istanbul from more than 300 cities in the world, and the two international airports in Istanbul are also served by other national and budget airlines.
Full details of the festival including registration and details on how to apply for the competitions can be seen on the festival web pages: http://istanbulmagicfestival.com/

9. Update - New Zealand Magic Convention - Wellington
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nopera Whitley (NZ)

With only 30 more places available and two big announcements coming soon we're expecting the convention to sell out in a matter of weeks.

The beauty of New Zealand conventions is that they are small and intimate and there are plenty of opportunities to interact with the headliners one-on-one. Not to mention, you will be in one of the most beautiful locations this planet has to offer.

Taking place in Wellington, the Capital of New Zealand, join Shin Lim, Rob Zabrecky, Hector Mancha, Colin Cloud and Charlie Frye for the 33rd New Zealand International Magic Convention.

It's going to be unforgettable! Don't miss out on an event that you'll remember for a lifetime.

If you're planning on coming, NOW is the time to sign up! Register online at www.magicconvention.co.nz before it's too late.
