2. Milt Larsen: 'Magic Man'

Owner of legendary Los Angeles club on all things magic.

By Keith Valcourt - Special to The Washington Times

In late February, tragedy struck The Magic Castle, an iconic, semiprivate club in Los Angeles when a performer by the name of Daryl hanged himself in the closet of his dressing room - a bizarre and mysterious event in a place often shrouded with mystery.

The horrifying event shone an undeserved light on one of the coolest places you've never been to. But just a few months prior to the sad event, I sat down with the man behind the Magic Castle, owner Milt Larsen, to talk about how "The Castle" came to be.

Question: Is it true that you were born into magic?

Answer: Indeed, I was. The first time I opened my baby eyes, all I saw were two magicians: my mother and my father. And then everybody I knew when I was a kid was in the business. The house was full of magicians. Some of the great names in magic looked at me and said, "What a cute little baby."

Q: Who were some of those great names?

A: One of the most famous magicians was Max Malini. He entertained for royalty. He was over at the house all the time. And names that people wouldn't know now but were famous in their days. My dad was a very good lawyer who handled Mrs. Houdini's estate after Houdini died. Everybody assumed he knew Houdini, but he didn't.

Q: How old were you when you started performing as a kid?

A: I was 8 years old. There is a picture of me doing a trick for Mrs. Houdini. She was a nice lady.

My dad created "The Larsen Family of Magicians" shows, but he billed it as the cultural background of magic. It was a lecture. During the Depression, people who had money were at these resort hotels. They didn't want to flaunt their wealth because everybody else was in the bread line. They accepted lectures more than a vaudeville show. We disguised our vaudeville show as a lecture, and it worked out fine.

Because of that we played all these absolutely gorgeous resort hotels and palaces. That's where I got my love of wanting to live in palaces.

Q: What is the Magic Castle?

A: The Castle is a private club in Hollywood, California, situated in a grand old mansion that goes back to 1910. My dad always talked about maybe someday having a private club for magicians. He passed away at an early age back in the 1950s. My brother Bill and I decided to fulfill Dad's wishes.

Q: What was The Castle like the first time you saw it?

A: The building was something right out of Charles Addams and "The Addams Family." It really looked dreadful with giant weeds covering the entire front yard. The shutters were falling off. It really looked like a haunted house.

I met the man that owned it, and he didn't really know what to do with the house. He was thinking of just knocking it down to create a road to the top of the hill. I told him about this crazy idea of turning it into a club for magicians.

He was a Texas businessman and I was a gag writer. Oil and water didn't mix. But I was able to make a deal with the owner of the property.

Q: How did you and your brother put sweat equity into The Castle?

A: My grandfather was a master carpenter. I always liked woodworking and things. We had a magic company. I always liked working with mechanics and such.

My brother was a business guy. We decided he would do the work in setting up the organization for the private club for magicians known as the "Academy of Magical Arts." I was the dreamer. I took a hammer and a saw and paintbrush and turned that old house into what it is now.

I'm considered the builder of the Magic Castle. He was the founder of the Academy of Magic Arts.

Q: When did the Magic Castle first open its doors?

A: Our opening night was January 2, 1963. We had to wait till after New Year's to open because we had to wait for our liquor license. When we opened, it was really small. We just had a reception room and a room for our invisible piano player and a third room for magicians to perform. That was it for the first run. Then we kept growing from there.

Q: Who were some of the early members?

A: We had a lot of celebrities because they liked magic and liked the atmosphere of the Castle. It's a private club so they weren't bothered by the paparazzi. They could let their hair down and enjoy magic without ending up in the tabloids.

Cary Grant loved and did magic. He started in vaudeville. It didn't hurt to have Orson Welles, who was a wonderful magician and legendary actor. Jimmy Stewart was a magician. He used to hang out at the Castle quite a bit.

Q: Do the shows change?

A: In the Castle we have a whole new set of magicians every week. They all have to be different. You have to have the balance of illusion and manipulation. We have one showroom for the big illusions and a closeup room for sleight of hand. Between them we have the parlor for the stand-up club magic. Then there are informal tables for magicians to do some magic.

Q: Will The Magic Castle always exist?

A: There will be magic forever because magic is simply imagination. As long as people can dream of things that are impossible, there will always be somebody who can do it. As long as you can think of something that has never been done and have someone do it, that's magic.

3. The Magic Word Podcast With Timo Marc
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

All of the guests that have been in the current podcast series, Las Vegas Chronicles, have been residents in "Sin City"… except our guest this week. Timo Marc was in town for business during the same time I was there recording podcasts. Stan Allen had alerted me to the fact that Timo would be in town so we connected via email prior to our arrival. But as the week went by, I was beginning to think that Timo and I would not get together. Between our two busy schedules and his short bout with the flu early in the week, we didn't get to meet up until our last night in town. And I'm glad we did.

Timo is a creative German magician who lives in a small burgh outside Stuttgart where he regularly performs at a local city theater. Timo is a Grand Prix winner in Monte Carlo and a winner of the SARMOTI Award in Las Vegas (Siegfried and Roy Masters Of The Impossible). He has performed his "shadow act" all over the world and at many conventions. His take on Germany's Got Talent (a takeoff of "America's Got Talent [sic]") is interesting plus he talks about creating an act and stories about his international travels.

You can watch a video of his act, see some photos, read the blog, listen to the podcast online, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/timo-marc

4. Children's Magic: Taming the "Creepers" - #448 - Kyle Peron

So what does taming the creepers mean and just what am I talking about? I wanted to take time in this article to talk about an aspect of children's magic that probably affects every children's performer but is not about the magic itself or about the effects that we do. This is a situation where as you perform your show, at some point you look out and realize your audience is gone. Well they are not really gone, just gone from your eyesight. The reason being is that throughout your show the kids have been "creeping" up on you and now they are pretty much around your ankles. Many of you know exactly what I mean.

Now the above situation may be an extreme one but I think it is safe to say that every children's performer faces this issue of maintaining your stage and working area for performance during the show itself. This article is going to talk about this issue of how can you control the creepers and how can you go about it in a way that works for you but does not send the wrong messages to the children or the parents.

I think the first thing I would like to state is that kids creeping up on you throughout the performance should not always be seen as the children misbehaving. It does not always need to be perceived immediately by you that the kids are being bad on purpose. I often find the kids creep because of their interest in the show and what they are seeing. Let me explain.

Kids live in a world of magic every single day. When they turn a switch, light appears. When they touch a button sound comes out of this box. In many ways young children do not see this as technology; they see it as magic in a way. To them a lot of what they visually experience is magic in of itself. So when they see things happen like this, they are curious about it. The same can be said about kids at a magic show. The curiosity and interest of the magic they are seeing interests them and because of this, they may get excited and want to get a closer look.

Now I am not going to say that every kid out there is creeping up on you just out of curiosity alone. We all know some kids will creep just because they may want to put you to a test of how much they can get away with. This does happen. However, my point is to not always foresee it in your mind immediately as a bad thing. Do not let the creeping first get in your mind so much that it causes you to give or send out a very negative vibe to the audience. Maintain your cool and realize that perhaps the real reason is that the kids just like what you are doing and want to get into it more.

To me that is rule number one. I never make assumptions during a show and perceive the creeping situation as a negative thing. I realize that children will be children and so the way I handle it must also be done in a fun and professional way.

To me as a performer my goal is to entertain the children and the audience watching as well as be a solutions provider to the parents who are hiring me. My main role while I am there is not to lecture the children on proper behavior. Nor is it my main goal to discipline children every chance I get. The reason for me being there is to create the best entertainment experience I can give to the children while meeting the needs of the client.

So how do we handle the creepers and what can we do in our show to establish a performance area and maintain this throughout a children's performance.

- First rule of thumb is what I mentioned above. Never assume that the kids creeping up on you is always a negative thing. Do not immediately draw a conclusion that the children are being bad. By thinking in this way you start to send out the wrong signals through your body language. One thing every children's performer should know is that children can read you like a book. They really can tell easily if you are mad or frustrated. Do not send off the wrong message when it may not even be warranted.

- Verbally define your stage area for your performance. I like to first establish my performance area right as the children are coming in to sit down. I do two things here that may be of interest. 1) I am actually standing in front of my table in my performance area. This idea of actually being in the performance area as the children come in actually establishes that the area is for the performer right from the start. And 2) I will verbally talk to the children as they are seated and tell them where the first line is to be. I will also mention that the birthday child is to sit front and center. This makes the child feel special but also allows me as a performer to establish the very first row of children and do so in a logical way.

- Visually define your stage area. There are many ways in which a performer can visually define a performance area by use of an actual object that defines the edge of your "stage". Some of the various ideas are as follows:

A) rope laid down on the floor
B) drafting tape or painters tape on the floor
C) small orange cones spaced out in front of your area. (can work well for outdoor events)

There are many others but you get the idea. The important thing here to note is that you are physically defining your performance area and the children know to stay behind it during the show. Just keep in mind that no matter what you are placing down to define your space, that 1) you make sure it is not going to cause any damage and 2) you clean it up and leave the area the same way as when you got there.

- Setting up of the ground rules during your introduction. Another great way to keep children from creeping is to set up your ground rules early in the show through your verbal introduction. Now the idea here is to define your rules but to not come across as lecturing to the kids or talking down to them. It needs to be defined for them but should be done in a fun process where the children get the idea clearly.

How I like to handle this is through telling the children how I select my helpers for the show. I basically cover off on 3 rules that I look for from the kids who I want to be my helpers. I need:

A) A child who is sitting down crisscross applesauce style. Now many of you may know what I mean. It is basically sitting Indian style. My wife is a teacher in elementary school and she tells me that a lot of teachers are using this in the early grades and so the kids are familiar with this position through the phrase.

B) I look for a helper who has their hand raised when they want to help out.

C) The most important rule of all is I am looking for a helper who is having fun, paying attention and has a BIG smile on their face. I then ask the children to see their smiles and applaud them for doing so.

By setting up these 3 simple ground rules I am establishing my performance area and rules for conduct but doing so in a fun manner that is not threatening or scary to them.

If at any point in the show someone starts to creep I can simply refer to my rules to remind them how I select my helpers. I can ask the kids if they know how I pick my helpers. In most cases the children will answer back correctly and I will look to make sure they are all adhering to it. They want to help out in the show because it is interactive and fun for them. So they usually will adhere to the rules simply because they want to help out as well.

- Do not be afraid to pause the show a bit in order to make sure you have the room you need. Now this does not mean you halt the show and stare the kids down. It really just means pausing briefly and perhaps mentioning to the children if you can have them all move back just a little bit so that everyone can see all the fun we are going to have. Something along those lines gets the message and point across but in a non-confrontational way.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

10. The First Magic Manor Camp 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mandy Davis (UK)

What a truly amazing experience! A weekend spent with a group of great magicians, old and new friends, in the grounds of a real country mansion which had the ambience of faded glory and future regeneration.

Magicians came and went - some camping in the grounds, some in camper vans, some driving in and back each day. All meals were provided in the elegantly painted dining room around a table seating up to fourteen at a time! Everyone pitched in to make it happen and to keep things running smoothly - although the brunt of the cooking and clearing up was on the shoulders of congenial hosts. Nothing was a problem for Jules, Karl, Sara, Jenny and Stevie.

I can only give you a flavour of the weekend as I had gig constraints on my time. People began to arrive on Friday, with everyone settling in and getting to know each other over welcome drinks and some close-up magic.

Neither Saturday nor Sunday mornings were early as the partying went on till the early hours each night. I arrived late afternoon on Saturday so I missed Hayashi's talk on performance and his workshop. However, Lee Hathaway, as the main organiser, had worked hard to provide some excellent events. A three-course meal was served with a neatly contrived starter, a main course of homemade chilli and pies or fruit for dessert. The meal was accompanied by the 'grand close up magic' of Fay Presto who performed between courses. She totally blew away the lay people present, whilst giving the magicians a good session on how to engage and entertain with her well-honed and well defined sets.

After a short break we were delighted to witness the first half of a forthcoming Edinburgh show - Tom Crosbie's 'You Can't Polish A Nerd' which included some ingenious effects such as a magic square and some Rubik's Cube feats among the self-deprecating humour.

Then it was chatting and drinking till the wee small hours - and home for me as camping is just not my thing!

The next day began with lectures for the magicians from Fay Presto and Ian Rowland - again excellent in delivery and information. Then a roast chicken lunch - followed by two highly anticipated Q and A sessions: the first from the legendary Simon Lovell who delighted with tales of his life so far; then the inside story from Jamie Raven as we heard of the journey to and since Britain's Got Talent. Both guys were very at home in the laid-back atmosphere of this weekend and it was just wonderful to all be enjoying each other's company without pretences or pressures from outside.

The convention ended like all conventions - with a Gala Show! I had been invited to compere/MC the event just ten minutes before it began! The acts were all amazing - the show opened with Fay Presto and Harvey the rabbit, then Hayashi performed his FISM winning act which is always incredible to witness. After a short interval, Tom Crosbie gave us the awaited second half of his Edinburgh show and our closing act was the fantastic Jamie Raven with some great humour and at least one piece of rope!

The drinking continued but now around a firepit on top of a slope in the grounds. Sitting around eating food cooked on that was another great bonding experience and a perfect ending to a really 'out of it' weekend with plenty of superb magic!

Thank you Lee Hathaway, Jules and co! Can't wait to see if you repeat it next year!
