4. Fielding West On The Magic Word Podcast
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (US)

Congratulations to Fielding West, one of two recipients of the "Performing Fellowship" from the Academy of Magical Arts. For the record, Luis Piedrahita was the other recipient, but it is Fielding who is the guest this week on The Magic Word Podcast. This podcast is part of the Las Vegas Chronicles but was withheld pending the conclusion of the AMA Awards Banquet which was this past weekend, April 2nd. I didn't want to spoil the surprises that he discussed during our chat.

This podcast was recorded at Fielding's home on the evening of the first day of my travel to Las Vegas. I had already visited and recorded conversations with Stan Allen and Bob Kohler earlier in the day, so this was at the end of the day at cocktail time. So we had a few adult beverages and conversation flowed as freely as the vodka. Fielding shared some great stories and wonderful advice on so many topics. This podcast is one of my favorites and I'm sure you'll enjoy it, too, despite it being longer than our normal podcasts. This is podcast number 351 and the beginning of the next 350!

You can watch a video, see some photos, read the blog, get some links, enter the contest, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/fielding-west

Also in this week's podcast, we announce the new contest for the "Nick Trost Subtle Card Creations" book series. H&R Magic Books donated two books of the series from number two through number five (they are sold out of number one) leading up to the release of number six. One copy of each will be given out to two lucky winners over the next few weeks. Be sure to visit the blog for more information and to enter the contest.

Put yourself into your magic? Sounds like a pretty silly question right? I mean you have to be the one who initiates the magic so you would always be in it. However, I am referring to something entirely different. I am not so much talking about the performer as I am the performance. Allow me to explain.

A magician creates a magical experience that the audience then takes in. However, too may magicians these days go about creating magic with blinders on. They seem to only see one way of thinking. This tends to lead them down only one path and that path usually ends up with a routine or presentation that seems commonplace or even redundant.

In many ways, this way of thinking creates what I refer to as "magic clones". It is the creation or recreation of what has already been done before countless times. I am not so much saying magicians do this on purpose. I think many start off with good intentions but follow the wrong paths to get to where they want to go.

If you are looking at magic for your ideas, then I feel you are going about things the wrong way. Looking at magic for magic is a style of "inward thinking". Now there is nothing wrong with being inspired by magic. However, notice I said inspired rather than imitated. Creativity is the lack of imitation. The problem is too many magicians dive so deeply into magic for ideas that they cannot help but to end up with a routine that is nothing new.

It may be a different sequence or a different patter but in essence it is just the rearranging of the components that have always been there before. It may be good, but does it give the audience something new? Does it raise the level of creative thinking in our art?

I feel many folks forget about a way of thinking that can break down those blinders we all seem to wear. It strips us from one way of thinking and allows us to explore not one path, but many paths of thinking. Who says a routine has to be done a certain way and only that way? To any one problem there may be multiple solutions. That is the beauty of creative thinking. This new way of thinking can be described as "outward thinking."

Outward thinking is the notion of allowing yourself to be inspired by things other than magic itself. Instead of always diving into our magic books and DVDs and YouTube videos, we go an opposite direction. We force ourselves to put away the magic related items and allow ourselves to be open to other areas of influence. When we start to do this, the magic we create can be amazingly fresh, creative and new.

Putting yourself into your magic starts to suddenly make a bit more sense. What it means is to allow yourself to place other interests besides magic into what you perform. Every single one of us has interests outside of magic. At least I hope you all do. It is these other passions you may have that can be added to your magic to make it as unique as you are.

For myself, I am an artist and was an artist long before I got into magic. It took me a while to realize that my passion for art could be added into the magic I present. When I realized this, suddenly my routines became more fresh, interesting and new. I suddenly had new themes I could explore and it allowed me to add levels or "layers" to which the audience can enjoy.

There are many magicians who have understood this notion of placing their own outside interests into their magic. Some are quite obvious. Jeff McBride is a perfect example. He is an amazing performer not just for his skill, but also because what he does on stage is so unique, fresh and so a part of who he is. Watch any routine and you can see elements of mime, martial arts, Kubuki theater etc. These he has added to what he does and by doing so has opened him up to being very unique and different.

I ask you to look inside of yourself and add those other passions to what you do in magic. When you start to do this, you will see a world of creative thought opening up for you. Give it a try. You may just like what you see.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. If you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. New Zealand Magic Convention - Wellington, 20-23 October 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nopera Whitley (New Zealand)

Big congratulations to Rob Zabrecky for being named the 2016 'Lecturer of the Year' at the Magic Castle's AMA Awards. Rob will be lecturing at the NZ Magic Convention alongside Charlie Frye, Hector Mancha, Colin McLeod and Shin Lim in Wellington - the Capital of New Zealand.

Wellington was voted 'Coolest Little Capital in the World' in the Lonely Planet 2011 guide to Best in Travel and despite its somewhat impetuous weather it's loaded with more bars, cafes and restaurants per capita than New York. You'll also find arts, festivals and cultural events to pull your attention and a booming film and performing arts industry thanks in large part to the success of Wellingtonian Sir Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings.

Fly direct into Wellington from all NZ airports and most major Australian airports including Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Canberra and Brisbane.

There are less than 90 available registrations for the convention so avoid disappointment and register before it's too late!

Registration online at www.magicconvention.co.nz

--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Peter Reid (US)

Press-Telegram Entertainment

The Queen Mary will be transformed into a magical vessel made up of such places as The Hocus Pocus Parlour, Wizard Alley, The Cauldron and The Secret Circle Study.

That's where professional magicians will perform as part of the second annual "FantaSea: Where Magic Lives."

The magic show, which is organized with the Academy of Magical Arts and its private member's only clubhouse The Magic Castle, returns to the ship on April 8.

It will include illusionists, mind readers, sleight of hand artists as well as roaming magicians performing tricks throughout the ship.

Some of the well-known magicians scheduled to appear include close-up comedy magician Jon Armstrong, illusionists Siegfried Tieber and Joel Ward, who have appeared on "The Tonight Show" and headlined the Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus show "Boom A Ring."

The day of magic will culminate with the "Night of Illusions," with shows at 6:30 and 11:30 p.m. and performances by David and Leeman, Derek Hughes and Christopher Hart.
Tickets start at $29 for adults and $15 for children and can be purchased by calling 800-437-2934 or www.queenmary.com.

11. Want To Be A KEA Lecturer?
--------------------------------------------
Message by Julian Mather (US)

Have you got valuable knowledge locked inside your head that other kids entertainers would benefit from? Can you communicate this knowledge clearly? Do you want to improve the lives of fellow entertainers?

If you have a quality lecture for Kids Entertainers, then you might be suitable for one of our paid lecture slots.

This is open to both experienced lecturers and new lecturers alike.

Experienced Lecturers note:

What we don't want is product demonstrations. What we do is not a digital version of dragging a suitcase full of props to a convention, setting up a table and selling via demonstration. That's not to say you can't promote your brand and services and products at the end of the lectures. You can. There must be a theme for your lecture and you must
deliver this theme with conviction. You want to give people a hand up, not burden them with more stuff they will never use. You want to be able to give more than you ask in return.

New lecturers note:

We welcome new lecturers. You do not need to have previous experience. You do not need to have extensive experience. You simply need to know something that fellow entertainers would benefit from knowing. Send your idea in and remember this: If we say no, that does not mean no forever. It simply means not right now. With some extra tweaks and effort, it may well be a stand out lecture in time to come.

Here's a summary of the process:

Create an online lecture for us from your content that runs 40 minutes. This will be pre-recorded. Think of it as having a Skype call with me and we record it. I say hello to everyone, I introduce you, then I hand over to you. You have a pre-made set of slides that people see and a small window appears with you in the corner of the frame. You can read your notes as you go. There is nothing hard or scary about this. We will be there to jump in if there are any difficulties. The slide pack you make will also be made available to members as a download. We take care of ALL the technical aspects. We provide you with simple training to prepare you to shine.

You also need to do a 20-30-minute podcast interview with us for the Kids Entertainer podcast. This is just a chat. No vision. Just audio. No preparation required. We use this to promote your upcoming lecture in KEA.

Who Gets What?

We pay you our set rate.

You get extra exposure to our audience of many thousands.

Your lecture gets added to our lecture archive which is available 24/7 to all KEA paid members. We have the rights to use content to promote this lecture.

We will not take your intellectual property and create any sort of stand-alone course etc. Simply, we do business honourably.

This all leads to a good and long term relationship that is win/win.

Ken and I are in this for the long haul. Want to work with us? Then show us what you've got.
