2. Magic Words
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff McBride (US)

Words have more power than we think! Did you know that the word "ABRACADABRA" has a deeper meaning?

It does, and it is a secret that can change what you think and say! Our words have a powerful effect on our reality… more than you can even imagine!

What does the word "Abracadabra" Mean?

Magicians use it all the time. So does Hollywood! But does it really have a meaning? Yes!

The word "Abracadabra" comes from an Aramaic phrase meaning "I create as I speak." In the Hebrew language, the phrase translates more accurately as "it came to pass as it was spoken."

What are you creating with your words… for example, if your thoughts and words are old thoughts or "last year's" words, you will repeat another year of not getting what you desire!

3. The Fabulous April Issue Of Genii
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman (US)

The Fabulous April Issue of Genii, the Largest-Selling Magic Magazine, is Now Available!

Our 80th anniversary year here at Genii continues with our cover story on master magician David Ben and his recent show Hocus Pocus in Toronto. Magic seems to be flourishing almost under the radar with numerous shows in smaller venues. David has done many short-run productions and appeared on our cover in 2000 in an article about his show The Conjuror. He has performed several other shows since then, and he returned to the stage this winter-I sent sleuth Noah Levine to pry some words of wisdom out of Mr. Ben. He succeeded, and David also explains some titbits you'll enjoy (with videos in our digital edition).

For those quirky folks who are intrigued by the things you can and can't do with mirrors, Richard Wiseman and David Britland do their best to convince you that they've solved a long-standing mystery involving a little-known illusion of Robert Harbin's. You can read all about "The Transparent Man" (and watch the video).

A master of mentalism, Bob Cassidy, died in February. He was a highly influential man in his field and Luke Jermay memorializes him in this issue. My longtime friend Daryl committed suicide in The Magic Castle on the same day that Cassidy died. To say that people were shocked is an understatement. We have two obituaries for Daryl, the first by Dustin Stinett and the second by Michael Ammar. I've included a few videos in our digital edition of Daryl performing to celebrate his style, personality, and ingenuity.

The columns commence with John Gaughan's "Chamber of Secrets," which plays and old tune with "The Organ Pipes". Jim Steinmeyer returns with a lovely piece of standup magic that packs small and plays big, in which a spectator is cut in two in "Conjuring". Two intriguing card tricks of the miracle class, with no sleights, appear in Helder Guimarães' "Invisible Threads" and David Britland's "Cardopolis". The effervescent Bob Read returns to Paris, and Cristo, in "Hidden Treasures". Eugene Burger reflects, quite wisely, on just what makes Dai Vernon still so resonant in our magical culture in "Eugene's Notebook" (with video). Jonathan Pendragon, having decamped across the country to the wilds of Vermont, concludes his series on "Interlude" in "Panmagium." David Kaye tantalizes you with a question he never answers, but it has something to do with the demise of the circus, in "The Expert at the Kids' Table". Tom Stone graces us with an absolutely astonishing Do-As-I-Do version of Oil and Water in "Lodestones" - please watch the video before reading the method and tell me that you weren't fooled. In "Magicana" John Guastaferro describes three solid effects using playing cards, bottle caps, and a really good idea with a Torn and Restored Newspaper … watch the video first! We're still Slanting with Jon Racherbaumer; we're still hearing about the Magic Castle with Daniel Ulin; and this month we're reading about new books via Kainoa Harbottle, new tricks via David Regal, and new videos from Dustin Stinett. Plus don't miss our monthly audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer.

4. The Houdini Brooch At The Potter And Potter Auction
--------------------------------------------
Message by Milt Larsen

True Or False -

The jeweled brooch that is being auctioned to the highest bidder at the Pottor and Potter magic auction in Chicago April 8th is a genuine heirloom. Houdini experts are constantly arguing about the how, why and where of the circumstances of Tsar Nicholas of Russia presenting it to Houdini and the stories about Rasputin.

Being morphed between fact and fiction for years - One fact is clear. The Tsar gave Harry Houdini the Royal Crown pin at a dinner around 1903.

Harry gave it to his wife Beatrice who later had it made into a brooch (necklace), which she wore to many magic occasions.

My mother and father were great friends.

Bessie helped them start Genii Magazine in 1936 and Mother and Mrs. Houdini formed Magicals, the first ladies magic organization in 1938. She showed her affection for Geraldine Larsen by giving her prized brooch at a PCAM convention in 1939.

Thus the Houdini brooch is an authentic part of magical history. It was sworn by two great ladies and passed on to a great lady in my life, my wife, Arlene Larsen.

The sale of the item will help finance our dream of an intimate magic venue in our longtime home town of Santa Barbara, the Magic Castle Cabaret which will feature the best close-up magicians from the Magic Castle Hollywood.

5. Magic: The Universal Language - #439 - Kyle Peron

I had an incident happen to me a few weeks back while performing stage and strolling magic at one of the festivals my wife and I work at. It was an interesting situation and one which I thought would make for an interesting article.

I am sure many of you have heard the phrase, "Magic is a universal language". I have heard it often as well from many different sources. But I have to be honest that I have never really studied it or witnessed it first hand as much as I did a few weeks ago. Allow me to share this story with you in hopes that it opens your eyes as it did my own.

I had just completed our first stage show of the day and finished signing autographs for the kids. Now it is my routine that I often get booked to perform strolling magic around the festival between our 2 stage shows. I got prepared and started walking around performing my strolling magic to the festival patrons.

As I turned down one of the crafter lanes, I found myself looking for a spot where I could perform, draw a crowd without causing traffic problems. I found this vacant spot where a vendor must have canceled. It looked ideal but it has always been my policy to talk to the vendors nearby to 1) introduce myself to them and 2) to ask if it is OK to perform there and that I will do what I can to mention them throughout my show. The vendors appreciate my kindness and it makes things run much better.

Well I went to talk to the one vendor and realized in a second that he had no idea what I was saying and I could not understand him at all. Now me being 75% deaf in both ears and even wearing hearing aids was not helping me to understand him any better. Surely this was a case of cultural and language differences. It turned out he was from Peru and just came over to America a few months prior.

All of a sudden, this idea and phrase "Magic is a universal language" popped into my head. If surely this was true, then now was the time to really apply it and see if it really does work.

Because of my deafness, I have become quite fluent in both reading lips, body language as well as using pantomime and minimal sign language so that I can cope myself but also try and have others understand me. Through doing this, I was able to get him to allow me to perform in the spot next to him.

Now it could have ended right there. I asked permission, he granted it to me and the case could have been closed. But what happened next I will never forget. It was an experience of not only crossing language and cultural barriers but we seemed to cross art form barriers as well. Let me describe what happened.

I started to perform my warm up. Basically, this is just very visual magic done to draw attention through curiosity. As I started into my routine with a billiard ball, I heard this music playing. Now because of my deafness I could not really pin point where it was coming from. As I started to perform more, I realized that the music I heard was changing to accompany my change in movement and what I was doing. It was at this time I glanced over and saw
the vendor next door was playing incredible pan flute music and flute music from Peru.

I said nothing to him and he said nothing to me. But the 10 minutes was an enlightening and magical experience unlike I have had in a long time. As it turned out, he was amazed at the magic I was doing and thought it would be a nice touch to create music on the spot to accompany the magic I was creating. As he played, my body movements and my routine changed to go along with it. It was as if the music and the magic happening became one universal thing. It was almost like visual and musical poetry of sorts.

In that short period of time we were able to create and communicate not only to the audience, but to each other. Even though he did not understand me and I could not understand him, we were able to communicate through his music and my magic. It was a very powerful and enlightening experience and we have become good friends.

It is simply amazing how we can use our magic as a universal language. We as magicians have the power to be able to use our magic to communicate and cross language and cultural barriers. To me that is a very powerful thing. I hope many of you may have the chance to experience what I experienced.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.
