4. The Magic Word Podcast: Gary Darwin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
On
this week's podcast we visit the home/museum of Gary Darwin
in Las Vegas. Gary has been one of the most visible advocates
of magic in the city. He has run his weekly "Darwin's
Magic Club" for 51 years and it's still going strong
with dozens of people attending every week. But Gary shared
a lot of stories and tons of puns and jokes in this week's
podcast plus tells a lot about his background and how long
it took him to appear on the "Strip" in a magic
show. Plus he tells us about his massive accumulation of
magic over the years.
You
can view a video tour of his home/museum, see some exclusive
photos, read the blog, listen online to the podcast and
download the MP3 at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/gary-darwin
This
week we also welcome Jonathan Hsu, Geno Munari, Phil Ackerly
and James Wade to the Friends of The Magic Word. It is due
in part to the financial patronage of these and other Friends
of The Magic Word that we were able to travel to Las Vegas
to make all of these recent podcasts possible. Thank you
guys.
For
those of you who would like to learn more about how you
can help make a difference, please visit https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/fotmw/

5. Father Knows Best - #438 - Kyle Peron

Message by Kyle Peron (US)

The
more we perform as magical entertainers, the more stories
we have to share with each other. That is why I enjoy talking
with my fellow magicians. It is also why I always come back
from conventions with wonderful stories to share. At conventions
there are times where we sit around late at night telling
funny stories that have happened to us. We usually always
laugh hysterically because most of us have experienced the
same situation before.
One
such topic that keeps coming up is a situation I simply
like to call "Father Knows Best?" It obviously
is based upon an old TV show of the same name. If you notice,
mine ends in a form of a question and there is a reason
for this. Allow me to explain it best as a scenario you
may all have witnessed from time to time.
You
book a show over the phone or via email and have all the
details worked out. It could be a birthday party or a family
event honoring a special family member. You have talked
with the client many times and everything is in order. You
arrive at the event and ring the doorbell and sweat a bit
waiting for that awkward moment where you meet the client
for the very first time.
As
the door swings open, you are greeted by a gentleman who
looks at you like you as if you were from another planet
and stopped to ask for directions. The fact that you are
dressed head to toe as a magician, or in your professional
attire, does not seem to register to this fellow that you
are obviously the entertainment for the event.
You
both stand there with this awkward feeling hoping that one
of you will say something. This is when you suddenly realize
this gentleman is your client's husband. It just so appears
to you that the poor lad had no clue you were coming or
what you are to do or even the fact you do magic. You introduce
yourself and ask where they would like you to set up. This
is often followed by a "deer in headlights" stare
as the poor man shouts out, "Mary can you come down
here. The MUSICIAN is here."
I
hope many of you are laughing right now. If you are, then
rest assured that you are doing so because this has happened
to you one too many times before. It happens to all of us.
This is why I have called this scenario, "Father Knows
Best?" It happens a lot but we can learn from even
this awkward situation.
In
many cases it is just safe to say that a lot of family events
you perform for are run and booked by the mother or a lady.
I can safely say that ninety percent of these types of my
own shows are booked this way. It is also safe to say that
we cannot assume that the father (or man of the house) has
any idea of what has been planned. In many cases they simply
do not want to know and leave the details to the wife. This
is OK if we realize this upfront.
What
I like to do is always ask for the client's name and also
a number where they can be reached on the day of the event.
I do this so that if I am at a large banquet hall and I
cannot locate the client, I always have a cell number that
I can call so as to not waste any time. This helps a lot.
I
also never assume that the client I talked to on the phone
will be the same person I meet when I get to the event.
In some cases the client may be busy or may be coming or
arriving later. If I am tuned into this, I can ask ahead
of time if they will be my person to meet at the event or
if they have someone else that can assist me when I arrive
for set-up. In most cases they are very glad I ask as it
often will be a backup person they assign me to.
If
I do get a backup person, I always will ask for their name
and contact information so I can touch base with them if
I need to. It just helps alleviate any awkwardness upon
arrival. If you are like me, you want to get there and get
set up without the wait.
Now
if the father answers the door, I am in a much better shape
to handle the situation without making him feel awkward
or uneasy. I am armed with the information I need and I
can ask for the person who is my contact. I can also call
the contact from the road as I approach the event. That
also helps so that they are at the door when I arrive.
Although
sometimes the father may not know best, it is important
that you treat him with respect. After all we are professionals
and we must conduct ourselves that way at all times. Do
not allow yourself to get angry or frustrated over the situation.
Instead do your homework upfront and you can solve this
situation with ease.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

6. Milt Larsen's Milt-ing Pot
--------------------------------------------
Message by Milt Larsen (US)
Quaffing
an adult beverage at the Owl Bar I was chatting with longtime
members Steve and Donna Cotton. They are every other Thursday
regulars and they journey from their home in Santa Clarita.
The spring season for our It's Magic! Show is now under
way with shows in Santa Barbara, Palm Desert and Livermore.
Cerritos is coming up March 19th with Jody Baron, Charlie
Frye and Company, Jay Johnson, Juliana Chen and the illusions
of Ray Pierce. Then Steve and Donna can enjoy Its Magic!
in their own hometown, Santa Clarita on April 9th (my birthday)
that show will feature Jody Baron, Charlie Frye & Co.,
Kyle and Mistie Knight, Dana Daniels and Dan Birch. That
will be the final show of our spring season.
Steve
and I started talking about vintage cars. He owns some gems.
Over
the years I have had a few interesting vehicles. After owning
and driving my favorite 1952 MG Roadster (Marmaduke) for
the past 60 years I finally needed room in our garage for
my shop and gave it to my nephew Dante Larsen. Back in the
fifties I briefly owned a 1927 LaFrance fire engine. I bought
it for a friend who took it to his estate in BelAir. Later
the estate was destroyed in a tragic fire that also burned
up the fire engine. In the 60's I rescued a Sunset Boulevard
double deck bus that was rotting away in a backyard. I later
gave that to the Orange Empire Trolley Museum.
When
we opened the Castle in 1963 I had a Mills Violano, an automatic
violin player that created enough static electricity to
screw up many TV sets in the neighborhood. I traded it for
a 1927 Alvis Roadster that I later traded for the impressive
grandfather clock that now stands on the landing on the
Castle's Grand Salon. I could go on and on about other curiosities
I acquired over the past several decades - a bad experience
with my 1934 Packard and my purchase of two European Compartment
railroad cars from the MGM Back lot auction in 1968. Not
exactly vintage cars but they did have wheels.
Fifty
years ago I had an idea for a new attraction that I tried
to convince our landlord Thomas Glover to let me build on
the hill between the Magic Castle and the Yamashiro. I thought
it would be cool to create a cocktail lounge using the two
European Compartment cars to re-live the era of the Orient
Express and have Mata Hari and spies in a mystery ride.
The cars would appear to move due to car shakers and rear
projection. The idea was ahead of its time but I was sure
Tom would love it. I bought the two vintage railroad cars
on spec! Tom told me he had other plans for his hill.
Now
I ride on trains all the time but realized it was better
to let Amtrak own them.
We're looking forward to the AMA Awards show at the fabulous
Orpheum Theatre. Back in 1950 Sherrill Corwin tried to bring
back four-a-day vaudeville at the Orpheum. They changed
the bill every week and I saw every show. Many of the great
old acts were still around in 1950. The theater was a little
dusty at that time but the acts were great. Al Lyons and
a full orchestra were in the pit along with a huge gold
encrusted pipe organ. It was a majestic throwback to a golden
era of show business. Real estate visionary Steve Needleman
recognized the beauty of the theater and spent four million
dollars restoring it in 2002. When you are watching the
world's most amazing magicians on the great stage take a
moment to drink in the opulent atmosphere of one of L.A.'s
most amazing treasures.

The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts: The award-winning
It's Magic! showcase enthralls and entrances fans at the
Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) on Sunday,
March 19, 3:00 PM. Tickets, starting from $40, are available
at the CCPA Ticket Office and cerritoscenter.com or by calling
(562) 467-8818.
The longest-running magic production in the country, IT'S
MAGIC! brings to the stage the biggest stars in magic and
variety. With a cast of award-winning performers from around
the world - including Hollywood's Magic Castle and Las Vegas
- the extravaganza leaves audiences speechless and spellbound
with sleight-of- hand illusions, stage tricks, and comedy
and variety acts. It's "the best magic show in town!"
cheers the Los Angeles Times. The CCPA lineup features magic
masters Jody Baran, Jay Johnson, Juliana Chen, Charlie Frye
& Co., and Ray Pierce.
The widespread success of It's Magic!, which started as
Hocus Pocus in 1956, led to the birth of Hollywood's Magic
Castle, a private club for magicians and magic enthusiasts
that opened its doors in 1963. Audiences were hypnotized
by sold-out magic shows featuring legendary masters of illusions
Harry Blackstone, John Calvert, Mark Wilson, Lance Burton,
and Harry Anderson. It's Magic! has cast its spell over
captivated crowds on the West Coast and beyond, including
Hawaii, Arizona, California, and Washington.
Illusionist Jody Baran headlined his own show, Kupanaha,
for 16 years in Hawaii. He has performed at international
adventure parks, cruise ships, and on television. Known
for his role on the popular television series Soap, ventriloquist
Jay Johnson garnered a Tony Award for his one-man show,
Jay Johnson: The Two and Only! The production also won the
Los Angeles Ovation Award for "Best Solo Show."
Master magician Juliana Chen won the World Championship
at the World Congress of Magicians, known as the "Olympics
of Magic." Considered the First Lady of Magic, Chen
has been featured on the NBC special The World's Greatest
Magic IV and ABC's Champions of Magic. In 2002, Chen was
awarded the Chavez Memorial Cup, which recognized her professional
excellence in the magic industry.
Often compared to comedians such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster
Keaton, and Dick Van Dyke, Charlie Frye & Co. delights
with a winning blend of silent comedy, magic, juggling,
slapstick, and acrobatics. Named Las Vegas' Specialty Act
of the Year, Charlie and his wife Sherry have thrilled audiences
in Australia, Africa, Europe, Asia, and the United States.
The duo won the Ken Dodd Comedy Award in England and the
Award of Excellence from the International Jugglers' Association.
In addition to being a professional magician and illusionist,
Ray Pierce is known for his unique ability to design and
coordinate all of the different facets of a production.
He has consulted for magician David Copperfield, singer
Olivia Newton-John, actors Steve Martin and Bette Midler,
and the late legend Orson Welles. Pierce has worked on a
variety of television shows, including Wings, Lois &
Clark, In Living Color, Mr. Belvedere, and The Bob Newhart
Show.
