Scary clown sightings: Video craze sweeps Twitter as mob goes "hunting"

Mark Molloy
6 October 2016 o 5:41PM
Creepy clown hysteria is spreading across the United States and many have been capturing the unusual sightings of the creepy jesters on their smartphones, including a recent "clown hunt" at Penn State University.

The @SpookyClowns Twitter account, which has amassed 160,000 followers, is sharing clips and photos of "scary clown sightings".

After a wave of "creepy" clowns were spotted across the United States late this summer, the phenomenon seems to have migrated north to Canada.

4. Clairvoyants On Cover Of October Linking Ring
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick, USA

The October issue of The Linking Ring is now available on the Website of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and is in the mail to all members who pay for it. The cover story is one of the biggest successes in magic this year -- The Clairvoyants -- Thommy Ten and Amelis van Tass. Read about how they met, developed their act and have appeared all over the world. There are twenty-two photos over the eleven pages, including one showing Thommy with straight hair (not the curly hair we know him by). They performed at the I.B.M. Annual Convention in San Antonio in July so for them to then finish second (they really should have been first) in America's Got Talent, was a special treat for all of us who saw them live.

Now here's an idea which should spread to other campuses. In "Smoke & Mirrors at Northwestern University," Robert K. Miller describes a club started by two local Ring 43 members, which gets students involved in learning and performing magic for other students on campus.

Criss Angel has a son with cancer. In an article entitled "Guardian Angel," Simone Marron tells about his starting a foundation, and his holding a fundraiser at his theater on September 12 to raise funds for pediatric cancer research and treatment.

This is the last issue with continuing coverage of the I.B.M. Convention in July in San Antonio. This issue includes articles on the "Super Session", "The Linking Ring Comes to Life," the late night lecture on "Tragic Magic" by Joshua Jay, and two panel discussions, one with six magicians who were on Penn & Teller's Fool Us television show, and another about the twenty-five-year history of the Mystery School, by Jeff McBride and Eugene Burger.

The Linking Ring is honored to have a stellar lineup of columnists. This month, Kent Cummins tells us about "Making Money With Magic" in his column, Marketing Magic; In "Cutting Up Jackpots", Bev Bergeron discusses "Magic for Children" Scott Hood writes about a solution to "No latex" rules in hospitals in his The Therapy Of Magic column; and Skip Way devotes his column Polishing The Rings to "Packaging Lessons".

In The Card Corner, Mike Powers shares his column with Chris Wilcox, who bring us "Four-Peat Deceit" Andrew Woo gives us "The Elevating of OTL" in his Simple Diversions column; Chris Beason turns over his Situationally Yours column to Josh Janousky, who give us "Alignment" and In his Auto-Magic column Michael Breggar presents "Coining MiraSkill.

In the popular Hocus in Focus column, there are reviews of eight new magic books, DVDs and tricks. Eleven people are honored for their contributions to magic in this month's Broken Wand. There are Ring Reports from fifty-five Rings.

5. IBM-SAM Combined Convention - Billy Topit Master Magician

Message by George Schindler (US)

Louisville Premiere of Billy Topit Master Magician to kick off IBM-SAM Combined Convention!

July 2017 will be a home coming celebration for Louisville's two most famous magicians - Lance Burton and Mac King - to whom the IBM-SAM convention will be dedicated.

In recognition of this occasion, Lance Burton will present the Louisville Premiere of his award winning film, Billy Topit Master Magician, as the opening event of the IBM-SAM Combined Convention next July 11. Joined by his fellow Louisville native Mac King, Lance will be on hand for a red carpet showing of the movie at the Kentucky Center's Whitney Theatre.

Billy Topit Master Magician took the Award for Best Family Film at the 2016 Wild Rose Independent Film Festival. It also won Distinctive Achievement Awards for Production Design, Art Direction, Costumes, and Visual Effects. Lance also won a Distinctive Achievement Award for Acting. Lance, Mac, and Michael Goudeau, who is the co-screen writer and a featured cast member, will be available for an interview and Q and A session at the film's conclusion.

The premiere will be free to all registered attendees of the convention and tickets will be sold to the public to raise funds for local charities.

Don't miss this historic and IBM-SAM exclusive event. This will be the only convention showing of this film in 2017. This red carpet premiere brings a bit of Hollywood glamour to the Louisville Combined Convention with stars, photo ops, and a movie that all magicians will particularly enjoy as they try to spot all the magician actors in the film.

6. The Magic Word Podcast - How Garrett Thomas Looks At Magic - Part Two
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (USA)

In this final podcast in a two part series, Garrett Thomas continues to give us his perspective of how he looks at magic. In particular, he discussed the fallacies in the two well-known statements, "A magician is an actor playing the part of a magician," and "For those who believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who don't, no explanation will suffice." Garrett also talks about why he doesn't incorporate comedy and jokes into his routines. He also talks about the different restaurant venues where he works including the old "Forks Hotel" in Cheektowaga, NY, home of the F.F.F.F. Original Close-Up Convention. He concludes by telling stories about consulting for David Blaine and how he got the job.

You can watch a video of Eddie Fechter at the Forks Hotel, see some photos, read the blog, enter the contest, listen online, subscribe to the podcast and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/325-garrett-thomas-part-two You can also listen via your favorite podcast app. We also have a couple reviews of tricks from Murphy's Magic Supplies. Be sure to check out the Magic Shop online at The Magic Word and help support the podcast with your purchases.

I posted recently on Facebook asking a simple question. What is one of the best qualities or traits you feel makes for a good magician and why? It was an interesting discussion that brought about a lot of great answers and opinions. However, one item kept coming up by many people. It is a single word called "personality". It was so great seeing so many folks give value to personality over other things.

I really think personality is so underrated in magic today. People just simply forget the power it has in everything we do. A trick is just a trick. The people want to like you. If you take the same trick and place it in the hands of someone who has and conveys personality and then someone who does not, it looks like a totally different effect to a lay audience. It really is that stunning to see happen.

Tricks alone do not really mean anything by themselves. A trick will not happen or work without the magician. Place a deck of cards on a table and they are not going to start doing an ACR routine by themselves. If they do, then start to run real quick. It is YOU that makes the difference and it is YOU that makes the magic happen. If this is the case, then focus should be on you and not the prop or trick you are presenting.

But what is it about you? It is your personality that really makes the audience enjoy the experience and enjoy you in the process.

I honestly feel that people want to be entertained way more than they want to be fooled. People want to walk away having had fun with the experience of what they just saw happen. Take some of the best acts out there today. Take a look at the ones that you really love to watch perform. It is safe to say that you enjoy them because 95% of their act is not solely based on the magic alone. There is more to what they provide isn't there? The good entertainers are that way because a majority of their act is interacting with the audience in a comical entertaining way, engaging, dialogue, connecting, talking. etc. It is the essence of their personality that makes you enjoy what they do.

It is interaction and expressing personality. It is taking the audience on a journey and getting them laughing and having fun instead of just seeking the WOW only.

I think that is key. If you could take away the trick in any performance, and safely say the routine is still entertaining, then I think you have something. Take away the props and the trick and then look at what that performer does. I can safely say the entertainers that "get it" are the ones who without any of these props, can still entertain and audience and have them enjoying every minute of it. This is the essence and importance of personality in magic.

There is a quote that was shared to be by my good friend Dan Birch. Dan said the quote goes like this. "If they walk away saying remember the trick that the magician did, then I have failed. But if they say remember the magician who did that trick, then I have succeeded." I was so glad Dan shared this with me because it got me thinking that it is your personality that makes them remember you.

I think that is a key to developing a likeable character. Some magicians try to focus so much on the trick only that they are void of any personality at all. I want the audience remembering me not my deck of cards.

No one is saying not to have the tricks. What we are saying is that the focus of any performance should not be on the trick itself. The trick is just a prop. The focus should be on personality and using that personality to truly take the effect to an entertaining level. It is giving the audience more to enjoy. You add personality into what you do and I guarantee your audiences will thank you for it.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

13. MINDvention 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Danny Archer (US)

Mentalism is extremely popular right now and many people wonder they go to learn about this fascinating topic. MINDvention is the only open mentalism convention in the US and the thirteenth annual convention is coming up this November 13th - 15th in Las Vegas, NV. The special guest of honor and recipient of our Lifetime Achievement Award is Rick Maue.

For one night only, Rick Maue is coming out of retirement to present his show, "A Fine Li(n)e". As many folks know, most of Rick's time is spent battling a series of serious medical conditions. However, as a major part of his ongoing therapy, Rick created this very unique play, and he has been performing it in a very intimate parlor setting in his own home.

"A Fine Li(n)e" is a tasteful blend of autobiographical monologue and mentalism. As Rick says, "The show is certainly more Spalding Gray than Derren Brown ... but both art forms are treated with great respect and presented with pride." This will be your only opportunity to see Rick perform "A Fine Li(n)e", unless you visit him at his home in Pittsburgh. So make your plans now to see his show in Las Vegas at MINDvention.

This year, in addition to the lectures on effects and techniques by performers; John Archer, Ted Karmilovich & Menny Lindenfeld (plus more to be announced) we will be focusing on the business and performing sides of mentalism.

Jamie Salinas and Robert Allen -The Business Side of The Seance Business.
Mindpro - Business Techniques for Mentalists
Bill Gladwell - Finding and Booking Your Show into Theaters
Willam Rader - Promoting your show and how to sell tickets
Joshua Lozoff -Theatrical Techniques for Mentalists
David Gerard - Performance of Mentalism
Plus more presenters to be announced.

There will also be a show each night and two workshops being offered the day after the convention.

Bob Cassidy will be holding court in Jack's Irish Pub there is a great dealer's room with all the latest props and effects, and I can promise you three full days of mentalism and business and performance techniques for mentalists. More info on our website... MINDvention
