The highlight for the week for me was attending Joshua Norbido's magic lecture in Auckland last night. Joshua is a full time professional corporate magician and all the items he presented were all tried and tested in the commercial world. His thinking was very refreshing, modern and innovative. Joshua comes from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia; hard to believe this was his first lecture and we highly recommend him!

2. Vanish Magic Magazine Going Monthly
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany, Editor Vanish Magazine

Some major news for fans of magic. Starting January 2017 Vanish Magic Magazine will be coming out as a FREE monthly magazine. The magazine will be smaller - not the usual 250 pages - so it will be cheaper to get a printed on-demand copy should you want a hard copy. I have lined up some great contributors from around the world giving it even more of a truly international flavour. Offering it monthly allows me to do some even more interesting things within the magazine such as embed video so you don't have to be online to watch it. I will also be adding some more exciting interactive concepts that will give readers a chance to interact with contributors.

We are very excited about the future of Vanish and always looking at ways to make it an enjoyable reading and interactive experience.

Stay Tuned for more exciting updates and news from Vanish.

3. New Houdini Information
--------------------------------------------
Message by Bob Loomis

To mark the 90th anniversary of Houdini's death in October, I've published the results of my 20 years of research on him. I guarantee you will learn something new about Handcuff Harry.

Bill Kalush, the co-author of "The Secret Life of Houdini", wrote, "I think your book is extremely interesting and you have done an enormous amount of research and analysis. Bravo! …there were certainly bits that were new to me."

Want to be as well informed as Bill? All you have to do is search for "Houdini's Final Incredible Secret" on Amazon US or UK.

4. Texas Association Of Magicians 2016 Convention Coverage
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

This week there will not be a weekly podcast released at the usual time due to the upcoming daily reports that will be posted from Corpus Christi, Texas and the Texas Association of Magicians (T.A.O.M.) convention. This will probably be my final convention attendance for 2016 but there are plenty of individual podcasts coming from some exciting guests that were recorded at some of the conventions I attended.

Judy Hollingsworth is the President of this year's convention and she is calling on her husband, Scott Hollingsworth, Talent Director of Houston's former Magic Island comedy and magic club, to feature entertainment by many of those who have performed at the Magic Island over the years. Some of the outstanding talent featured at this year's T.A.O.M. convention will include Banachek, David Stone, Oscar Munoz, Chip Romero, Cody Fisher, Danny Orleans, Ice McDonald, C.J. Johnson and many more stars of magic. I hope to chat with all of these performers and others as I bring you up-to-the-minute convention coverage of the shows, the contests, the dealers, the organizers, the registrants and the fun from the beach-side hotel in Corpus Christi, Texas.

There may even be some special, convention-only deals offered in the podcast. But if you don't listen until after the convention, then you will miss out on some super deals because they will disappear after September 5th. So, keep current and listen each day for the convention-only dealer/lecture deals.

You can keep up to date and hear it all this weekend at: http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com And if you want to attend the T.A.O.M. convention, it's not too late to register. Please visit: http://www.taom.org/2016/ for more details. I hope to see some of you there!

6. "Reading" A Child - #414 - Kyle Peron

Message by Kyle Peron (US)

As much as we would like to believe, we do not always pick the most perfect child helper. Maybe your track record is pretty good, but as good as you are at reading a child, you can never be sure how that child will react once on stage with you. That once polite and cute kid can instantly turn into "cujo" or the "devil's spawn." once they arrive on stage to assist you.

We all have experienced this and I hope each time you learn to deal with it in the best and most proper way. As a professional, I must learn to handle situation like this and I must learn to be bigger than the problem at hand. Simply enough that means if I am a professional, then I should have the ability to handle situations and problems in such a way that I remain in character and still continue to do my job.....entertain the audience.

In many cases a child's attitude and personality can change so drastic enough that it is quite obvious to you. You know instantly that you had made a bad choice and it is obvious to you that you may need to switch gears a little in order to get through the routine you have planned.

However, too often performers do not see the warning signs that kids can and do give to you. Not always does a child change so drastic that you easily see it. In many cases a child's attitude and emotions can change gradually in the process of a routine. You may not always see it if you are not accustomed to learning to "read the child."

Because I am a deaf entertainer, I read lips all the time. I must do so if I am able to hear people and communicate with them. Because of this, I am constantly looking at and scanning my helpers. Learning to read a child is an important skill but it requires first the ability to see and to notice small things before they become bigger problems.

Make sure to pay attention to a child and pay attention to what they do, say and how they act. Sometimes little signs show up that you can easily start to notice.

For example, a bad situation is when you have a helper on stage and the helper becomes shy or, worse yet, starts to cry on stage. There are warnings signs you can easily start to pick up the minute you select a child. The first thing you must realize is that a child in their seat can be vastly different then the child on stage with you. In their seat they are comfortable, relaxed and among friends.

When a child in on stage with you, they are in the spotlight, standing next to a big adult with all of their friends staring at them. They may not have any idea what you are going to do and they may fear being embarrassed. This can easily change a child's personality or mood and you must be tuned to seeing the change if it happens.

So what are some of the signs that a child may be shy, nervous or heading down the road to shutting off on you?

- the head starts to come down towards the chin instead of being held up high
- the shoulders come in and they hunch over
- they usually will try and avoid eye contact with you
- the voice becomes softer and the responses are shorter
- the hands may go into the pockets or they may hold their hands together close to their waist
- they may also back up close to your table or a prop as a way of "hiding" or "protecting" themselves"
- if you approach them, they may back away slowly or avoid approaching you

Now these may seem obvious. However, many times these signs are subtle. In many ways you may be so focused on your routine that you simply fail to see any of these happening before it is too late. Learn to study these signs and others. Pay attention to your helper and start to read them the minute they are selected.

The key is to notice these signs before it becomes a bigger issue. In the above instance, the signs tell me the child may be scared, nervous or unsure of the situation. If I let it go, the child could shut off and not interact or could start to cry on stage. It does happen.

If I see a warning sign, I can immediately change my routine or how I go about it. A professional should be one who knows how to adapt to any situation. If I see one of the signs above, I might do one of the following:

- empower the child by allowing the audience to applaud just for him or her. I build their confidence up and the clapping makes them the star of the moment and the applause shows that the audience is on their side.

- instead of doing a patter line (or part of the routine that gets me a laugh from something the child does) I may change it around so the laugh is totally on me. For example, a breakaway wand would not be given to this child but instead he gets it right every time while I am the one that it breaks on.

- get the child to laugh. Laughter is indeed the best medicine and it is a great way to get a child to open up.

- allow them to do the magic. Instead of you being the magician, allow the child to be the one that makes the magic work. You act amazed at their magical ability and all the credit goes to them.

Now there are more warning signs and certainly more ways you can handle it. However, I hope that these few listed here get you thinking more. We need to learn to read a helper and to see signs early on. We must be willing to adapt our routine if we see a helper headed down the wrong path and apply some of these methods to make that child feel special.

If I am a professional, then I must treat every helper as a guest in my own home. I never want a guest to feel uncomfortable and I always want them leaving knowing they had a great time.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

11. Ricky Jay is on the Cover of Genii's September Issue!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman, editor

On our cover this month is the story of Ricky Jay and his fascination with Matthias Buchinger. An exhibit at the Museum of Metropolitan art accompanied the release of his recent book on "The Little Man of Nuremberg." Carl Mercurio attended Ricky's interview at The Met to celebrate the opening of the exhibit, and investigates the most curious history of Buchinger, the multi-talented artist and magician, among his many other abilities, made special because he had neither arms nor legs.

Since the book is also about Ricky Jay's fascination with the subject, and his adventures as a collector, it's a must-buy for his fans. Our article also includes an excerpt from Matthias Buchinger: 'The Greatest German Living,' by Ricky Jay, Whose Peregrinations in Search of the 'Little Man of Nuremberg' are Herein Revealed courtesy of the publisher, Siglio, of the section titled "Magic." The beautiful portrait of Ricky Jay done specially for our cover is by the Japanese artist Teruhide Sonoda.

Also this month, in "Blink and You'll Miss It," Dr. Richard Wiseman writes, "I had thought that these frequent but fleeting moments of darkness were simply the price we all pay for having eyeballs that need to be regularly lubricated. I was wrong. … researchers have been studying blinking for many years, and that this seemingly simple behavior has provided a series of surprising insights into the human mind."

And off we go into the relationship between spectators blinking and the performance of magic with one of Teller's most famous tricks used as an example. * The new Patrick Page Audio Archive, reviewed by Dustin Stinett in our July issue, is a goldmine of wonderful listening. In addition to our article by Barry Murray, we also have a half-hour sample from the archive for you to listen to in our digital edition. * The article "The Magic Path to the Way of the Journey" by Rafael Pablo is presented without comment.

We have a passel of interesting columns for you this month. In addition to Todd Karr bringing you the latest odd titbits in "The Eye," and Jon Racherbaumer discussing the latest non-magic books that might be of interest to magicians in "On the Slant," Kainoa Harbottle presents a subscription-price worthy coin effect in "By Means of Metal" that I had to pry loose from him before he put it out as a separate effect-a reputation maker, it is; Harrison Greenbaum explains the concept of The Third Level which will set you apart from everyone else (in a good way) in "You are All Terrible"; What is normally "Left-Handed" this month is "Right-Handed" as columnist Jeff Prace has been silenced and left in closet by Josh Janousky; From the "Chamber of Secrets" John Gaughan reveals the ancient Giant Bowl of Fire!; David Britland muses on the ingenuity of Bob Hummer in "Cardopolis"; David Kaye goes wabbit hunting in "Expert at the Kids' Table"; the late Bob Read recounts more of his collecting adventures and a meeting with Gary Kurtz in "Hidden Treasures"; Andi Gladwin includes items by Tom Stone and the late Jack Parker, and more, in "Magicana"; and John Lovick reviews three books (though not his own!), Danny Orleans a bunch of tricks, and we welcome Nathan Coe Marsh to our group of video reviewers.

Please join us every month by subscribing at www.geniimagazine.com. Subscribers receive access to all 80 years of Genii online at no extra charge!

From September 20th till November 20th we will be in China. In those 60 days our full show will tour in 30 cities. We will be online daily with video updates, to allow everyone to feel from far away the experience of the tour: stage and backstage, travels, local interaction, the unexpected, joy and sorrow.

There is no better opportunity, to fully understand the itinerary pros, than following it in real live situation. Today technology allows for that and I have opened my mind to this new experience, so I thought it would have been nice to inform the magic community and offer a priority. Send a message to info@erixlogan.com if you are interested and in a few days we'll let you know our terms and conditions, without any obligation on your part.
