2. End Of An Era, Beginning Of A Legacy
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen (Editor)

Last week, I stood onstage at MAGIC Live and announced that the August 2016 magazine, with Fabrini's amazing painting on cover, is the 300th and final issue of MAGIC as we know it.

After much consideration and after exploring several different possibilities, I'm excited to announce that I am retiring MAGIC Magazine.

This is exciting news, because I am not done yet - far from it. I've published the magazine for 25 years, and will now produce the final 25 issues over the next two years. We call these special issues the MAGIC Legacy editions.

We're offering an Early Bird Special for MAGIC Legacy, which comes with a free copy of Square One for the first 10,000 subscribers. This is the booklet originally given to MAGIC subscribers in 1991, which is a collector's item today.

To find out more about these final 25 issues, our Early Bird Special, and the free gift of Square One, please visit our website.

www.MAGICmagazine.com

In the summer of 1991, I asked the magic community to join me on a crazy new venture. Now 25 years later, I'm asking you to join me again. It's going to be quite a ride.

Thanks!

3. The End Of MAGIC Magazine Plus The Clairvoyants
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Stan Allen, editor of MAGIC Magazine, announced at this year's MAGIC Live! Convention that he is ceasing to publish MAGIC Magazine in its current form. He will recreate and re-envision the magazine with a limited run of 25 more hard cover magazines over the next 20 months (not available in digital form) with what will be called MAGIC Legacy. For a limited time, Stan will offer a considerable discount off of the $250 subscription price through the website at: http://magicmagazine.com More details on this exciting new project and his future plans for the magazine and MAGIC Live! Are discussed on the front end of this week's podcast at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/316-the-clairvoyants-magic-legacy

But the bulk of the podcast is devoted to a conversation I had with F.I.S.M. Mentalism winners, Thommy Ten and Amalie van Tass, known as "The Clairvoyants". They have been appearing in the wildly popular American TV show, "America's Got Talent" (AGT) as well as "The Illusionists - Turn of the Century" tour. In this podcast, they talk about meeting each other, their background, performing on AGT, The Illusionists, and more. This podcast was recorded in San Antonio, Texas in early July when they were featured at the I.B.M. convention so it was well before they had advanced in the "judge's cuts" on AGT. All of this, plus my chat with Stan is at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/316-the-clairvoyants-magic-legacy

A lot of time has passed since I last posted an update on the New Zealand Ezine, but that does not mean that I haven't been actively posting podcasts. To the contrary, since the July 28th podcast with Lance Burton (episode #305), I have posted 10, count 'em, 10 more podcasts. I have just been too busy recording and posting podcasts to notify everyone on social media of the updates. But for those of you who are subscribed or are regular listeners, you have been following my exploits and have heard the daily updates from Abbott's Get Together and from MAGIC Live! For those who haven't, well…everything is still there and available in the archives: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/archives/

Magician Penn Jillette To Write Spider-Man/Deadpool

by Russ Burlingame

An upcoming Spider-Man/Deadpool story will be written by famed stage magician Penn Jilette, Marvel announced today.

Jilette will pen Spider-Man/Deadpool #11, which in addition to the title superheroes will also star himself and his longtime comedy/magic partner, Teller.

"Spider-Man/Deadpool are a team, but in this comic, the team is Spider-Man/Teller and Penn/Deadpool," Jilette said on the This Week In Marvel Podcast. "Imagine what a magician could do with someone who heals that quickly!"

After he said that he wanted to run Deadpool through with a sword, Jilette acknowledged that he knew it hurt Deadpool when that kind of thing happened, even if he healed quickly. "That's why it's fun!" He joked.

Jordan White, the book's editor, said that he had been a fan of Penn and Teller's for years, and that he had thought of Jilette right away when trying to brainstorm ideas for a fill-in writer on the title.

"Spider-Man has the sensibility of everything wonderful and groovy from the '80s and '90s, and then you've got Deadpool who's become a character of the 21st Century," Jilette said. "There's a new impetus there -- breaking the fourth wall -- there's a lot of stuff that I'm interested in in theater and performance that the Deadpool character is playing around with. The idea of having something happen while you're commenting on it is fascinating to me....I love to do magic tricks, talk about how magic tricks are done, and still fool (people.)"

Ironically, Penn and Teller: Fool Us is currently running on The CW, where the pair share the airwaves with DC's pantheon of costumed do-gooders, including Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. A thinly-veiled pastiche of Penn and Teller also appeared in a Season One episode of iZombie, based on a DC/Vertigo property.

While this is Jilette's first outing as a comic book writer, it's far from his first time writing. He's penned a number of best-sellers including Cruel Tricks For Dear Friends and his recent release Presto!: How I Made Over 100 Pounds Disappear and Other Magical Tales. Some of his books have been co-written with Teller but, in keeping with his silent stage persona, Teller apparently doesn't maintain his own Amazon page, with Jilette's name being a link and Teller's being just text.

One has to wonder whether at some point he'll get a Chasing Amy-style lengthy rant in the Spider-Man/Deadpool issue, although with Jilette writing that seems unlikely.

Spider-Man/Deadpool has been one of Marvel's most irreverent releases since it launched last year, raising fan hackles back in June with an issue that mocked Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Do you find handling tentative bookings tricky? We don't blame you. Reserving a schedule for a client you're not sure will confirm the booking or not may make you lose out on other shows. History of Magic: Dedi the Magician

6. Roadblocks To Creativity - #413 - Kyle Peron

Message by Kyle Peron (US)

I think the beauty of being a magician is the ability to simply create. I am also an artist, so this part of what we do fascinates me. We can take nothing and create something amazing from it. We have the ability to produce a creative and entertaining experience. The problem most magicians have with being creative is the inability to think freely and openly about any and all possibilities. When we brainstorm ideas for acts or routines, we tend to place roadblocks that hinder us from ever really getting anywhere.

The worst enemy to creativity is us. What happens is that we must teach our minds to be open to thinking. Each and every one of you reading this right now has the ability to be as creative as you want to be. The problem is that as we think of wonderful ideas, we stop going down the road because thoughts enter our mind that inhibit us.

I always say that when being creative, money is no factor. Now of course it will be eventually, but I am making a simple point here. Creativity alone does not cost anything. If there is no cost to creative thought, why hinder yourself in the first place.

I also always say that when thinking of ideas, never limit yourself by saying, "how am I going to do this or afford this." As soon you state this, your hindering creativity. Creativity does not need road blocks that we seem to always place on ourselves.

Creativity needs free reign to grow and prosper. If we allow ourselves to think freely, we can come up with amazingly fresh ideas that we would never have thought of before.

When one stops to think "How am I going to accomplish this" or "How can I afford this," then what happens is the mind puts up these road blocks. Creativity comes to a grinding halt. All those great ideas inside your head never come about because we are stopping ourselves before we even get started.

When I start to brainstorm about ideas for a new routine, I try and place myself first into a spot with little distractions. I train my mind to simply think. In creative thought there are no wrong answers. There are only possibilities to be discovered. So allow these ideas to enter your head freely. Find a method for recording these ideas. This can be pen and paper, a computer or a recording device. Allow these ideas to stream from you.

Now do not get bothered by the notion that these ideas may not mean anything or may not be complete. That is simply natural. It happens. Just record them. Some of the best ideas in magic came from incomplete segments of an idea. However, these ideas would never have been recorded if one stopped themselves simply because the thought did not make sense.

So as you are thinking creatively understand that there are no rules to hold you down. There are no roadblocks on the road to creative thought. The only roadblocks are ones we place ourselves. So learn to be open with any and all ideas no matter how bizarre they may be. Do not hinder your creativity by wondering how something will be done or the cost associated with it. Do not hinder yourself by not recording an idea simply because it does not make full sense to you at that moment. Simply let your mind be open to any idea. When you start to do this, you will be amazed at what comes about.

If you are so hung up on one idea, you will often times miss the 100 other ideas your mind wants to create for you. Do not allow these wonderful ideas to be lost. So do not worry so much about price or how it can be built. There is always a way to make something work. That is to be figured out after you have the creative idea. Never hinder thinking freely just because of the worry about cost or how something will be created.

Creativity is our most prized skill that we simply take for granted and never use enough of. Learn to think creatively and open the mind to the ideas that we all have there. I guarantee your magic will become more unique and your audiences will thank you for it.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

Yes, it's true after hosting six unbelievable workshop events from 1996 through 2002, we've decided to revive this incredibly-popular magic event! It's called the workshop revival... and you're invited to join us! The dates are October 5-8, 2016 and it will be held at the Radisson
Hotel in St. Joseph, Missouri (just 25 minutes north of Kansas City International Airport).

This is a career-changing experience! Produced by David Sandy for IBM Ring 129, the workshop is known for its unique approach to learning strong commercial magic from some of today's hottest working pros... in an intimate, small-group environment. It's strictly limited to only 200 participants and has always sold out. You will learn, hands-on, from some of the greatest performers in the business! And this year's line-up of talent is no exception! Its four incredible days of learning and fun... Guaranteed!

Here's a partial listing of teachers and performers at this year's Workshop: Shawn Farquhar, Asi Wind, Kyle Knight & Mistie, Oscar Munoz, Handsome Jack, Jade, Shoot Ogawa, David Kaplan, Rob Zabrecky, Simon Coronel, Gerry Katzman, Tim Hannig, and several special surprise guests!

As in the past, our focus is on learning strong commercial magic in an intimate setting. In addition to numerous learning events and hands-on sessions, you'll enjoy close-up shows, stand-up shows, a banquet and dinner show (yes, the meal is included!), some great impromptu performance moments and fellowship, plus an unbelievable stage show at the historic Missouri Theater, and some very special surprises!

Here's the exciting part ... the cost is only $299, but you get a $30 discount if you're one of the first 125 registrations (making the registration cost only $269)!

Registration is strictly limited to only 200 participants in order to keep the event intimate! Don't miss out it's sure to fill up quickly. We also have a special hotel rate of $84/night.
