3. The August Issue Of Genii Is Now On Its Way To You!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman

The "dog days of summer" last from July 3 to August 11, and we're heavy into it right now. But Genii is the breath of cool fresh air you'll want to make you forget how hot and humid it is. The largest-selling magic magazine in the world will delight you every month for as low as $35.

Our cover story this month required your editor to travel cross country to Los Angeles to see Derek DelGaudio's superb new show In & Of Itself at the Geffen Playhouse. With its limited run extended five times (the theater's record), Associate Editor Dustin Stinett watched the show many times and spent hours interviewing its star to bring you and exclusive Genii cover story that tells all but leaves the secrets of the show intact.

Genii's new owner Randy Pitchford attended the first previews of both parts of the five-hour play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London and writes a detailed story about the enormous amount of magic in it-enough prestidigitation, he says, to call it a "magic show."
In "Light from the Lamp" Kainoa Harbottle reviews the latest books, including John Lovick's book about Handsome Jack; Joe M. Turner reviews the latest videos including the latest multi-DVD set from Luke Jermay; and David Oliver reviews the latest tricks including Shin Lim's "Dream Act."

Our columnists provide both thought and thoughtful magic: Todd Karr brings you the latest news in our new section "The Eye," and we have tricks and thoughts from Hannibal (a new columnist), Helder Guimarães, Jim Steinmeyer, Max Maven, Eugene Burger, John Gaughan, Jonathan Pendragon, Jon Racherbaumer, "Magicana" from Andi Gladwin, and Magic Castle news from Daniel Ulin.

Subscribe to Genii today (digital only subscriptions start as low as $35) and get a free DVD of a lecture by Dai Vernon! www.geniimagazine.com

4. The Magic Word Podcast - Lance Burton - Second Act
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

As most of you know, Lance Burton has retired from magic having closed his show in the Lance Burton Theatre in the Monte Carlo Casino in 2010 after a 31 year career of performing over 15,000 shows for 5MM people! So what has Lance been up to for the past six years? Well, he hasn't been sitting on his hands. He has been using them to write, produce, direct, and star in a major independent feature film called "Billy Topit".

In this week's podcast Lance talks about his long career in magic and tells some fun stories along the way including how he came to acquire the signature street sign used in his dove act plus stories about various celebrities who visited his show. He also talks about his commitment to pet adoption agencies in Las Vegas. But his main focus is in promoting his new film. So, he talks about how it came about, what inspired him, how it was written and how it is now being marketed. "Billy Topit" may be Lance's "second act" in his life, but I think he is looking forward to his "third act" of returning to the farm in Kentucky.

While recording the audio for the podcast, we simulcast our chat "live" on Facebook. This was the first time Lance had used this feature of Facebook so you can hear his childlike excitement as he responds to the various questions and "shout-outs" to family and friends who watched us in real time.

You can watch a few videos (including a trailer of "Billy Topit" and the Facebook video), see some photos, read the blog, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/305-lance-burton

Next week we travel to Colon, Michigan for Abbott's Get Together where I will be posting daily updates from the convention featuring chats with organizers, talent, dealers and registrants. Be sure to tune in to hear all the latest from this singular event. And be sure to subscribe to The Magic Word so you never miss another podcast. You can find details on how to subscribe at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/subscribe-to-the-magic-word/ Be sure to follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/magicwordpod where you can ask questions by using the hashtag #MagicWordPod And of course, if you want to participate in upcoming LIVE streaming chats on Facebook, be sure to "Like" us at http://facebook.com/TheMagicWordPodcast

5. What is it That Makes Children Laugh? - #409 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

As a family oriented performer I have often wondered exactly what is it that makes children laugh? What is it that they respond to that generates this rush of laughter and good times? It is interesting to research and I found out things I never knew before. If a magician understands what makes children laugh, then they can apply it to the routines they create. After all we are entertainers first. So allow me to dive in a bit on this subject and share some of my findings.

The first item that caught my eye when I first started researching this topic was about the relationship between how often children laugh and how often adults laugh. It does not take a rocket scientist to realize that children laugh much more frequently than adults do. But why is this? I found out a statistic that really shocked me. Children laugh on average of 400 times in a course of a day where as adults tend to laugh around 25. That is a staggering difference. So what is it that causes this laughter? I wanted to list some of the things I found through research as well as through my own personal experience.

- Treating an Object Like Something Else: It is an important to realize that children live in a fantasy world at a young age. Everything to them is magical. Turning on a light is by magic. But often times they also start showing at an early age the idea of pretending. You see this a lot in their play. One object can suddenly become another object. This can be used by us entertainers. Because the child does this naturally, having one object become something else is funny to them.

- Calling an Object or Person by a Different Name: As children start to talk they become very vocal. They use their new found communication skills and start to use that in their humor as well. If we know that children early on are fascinated with speech and with wanting to verbally tell you things, we can use this to our advantage. Children themselves will often naturally call something by a different name and find doing so hilarious.

- Name Play: This is a concept that as children get older and start using their new found vocal skills, they like to name play with the sounds of names. This could mean a word like Boat could be Boat, coat, soak, toat, zoat etc. Even if the words are not real words, the sound of the new silly word is funny to them. As magicians, we can use this in our performances and possibly create funny magical words that play off this idea.

- Made up Sentences: This goes along with the vocal concepts mentioned above. The idea is as children develop their skills with words, they often like to make up sentences that really have no meaning to them. To children, this is exploring and having fun with the new tool of communication. As a magician I can use this idea in the storylines I create or the magic words I have the children say. If I know that this makes children laugh, I can adapt my routines to use this principle.

- Things That Don't Belong Together: As children develop in their learning capacity, they start to associate the words they say with physical objects that represent them. Saying cat now is not just a sound but they know what a cat is and what the cats do and the sounds they make. What is interesting is that children now find this new found power as empowering to them. If a magician can get something wrong that the child knows is right, they feel empowered to correct the magician and they also find it funny. If I state that a cat goes MOOOO, the children will laugh and want to correct me.

- Physical Comedy: No one quite knows for sure why it is that children tend to laugh at things that physically happen to the magician or anyone. If I accidentally hit myself on the head with a funny magic wand, children will find it funny. If I suddenly get my finger caught in the zipper of a change bag, kids will laugh. I think part of this stems from their own play world and from cartoons they see on TV. Knowing physical comedy is funny to a child can open the doors to possibilities in your own routines.

There are certainly a lot more that I have come across in both research and personal experience that I could share with you. However, I will leave it at this for now. This should give you a good idea of not only what makes children laugh but some of the reasoning behind it. If we know what makes children laugh, then we can strive to be better children's performers

6. Hank Moorehouse With Street Naming

White Pigeon honors magician Hank Moorehouse with street naming

The Village of White Pigeon is going to be honoring one of its most notable residents with a lasting tribute - a street named in his honor.

Legendary magician Hank Moorehouse, a longtime White Pigeon resident who passed away in 2011, will be honored by having a portion of East Murray Avenue (the street on which he lived) named "Hank Moorehouse Avenue."

The street naming was unanimously approved by the White Pigeon Village Council last week. The street name won't officially change, but a sign honoring Moorehouse will be installed at each of the intersections along East Murray Avenue.

A ceremony unveiling the new street signs will take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the intersection of "Hank Moorehouse Avenue" and Kalamazoo Street in White Pigeon. The public is invited to attend. Members of Moorehouse's family will be on hand to help unveil the sign.

The street-naming honor was the brainchild of Brian Kruger, an Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker who is working on a project about Moorehouse's life in magic. Kruger pitched the idea to officials from the Village of White Pigeon, and they loved it.

"Hank traveled the world with his wife Jackie doing magic, and he was an ambassador for White Pigeon everywhere he went," Kruger said. "Because of Hank, magicians everywhere knew about this beautiful little town in Michigan. You'll run into magicians in China and Japan today who know about White Pigeon, and it's all thanks to Hank and Jackie. This is a fitting tribute to a great man, and I'm thrilled and honored that the officials in White Pigeon agreed."

In voting unanimously to approve the street-naming, the White Pigeon Village Council noted Moorehouse's numerous contributions to his community, including the countless free magic shows he performed for community groups and charities.

A native of Illinois who later moved to Michigan, Moorehouse was renowned as a comedy magician, magic dealer and producer of magic shows. He rose to the very top of the magic world, serving as president of the Society of American Magicians in the early 1980s (Harry Houdini was one of the first presidents of the prestigious organization).

Moorehouse traveled the world doing magic, performing in China, Japan, Germany, England, Norway and more. For many years, he produced shows for the Abbott's Magic Get-Together in nearby Colon (the Magic Capital of the World), where he was also a frequent performer.
Moorehouse passed away in Shanghai, China, in 2011 at the age of 77, during a magic tour he was producing.

8. A Recommendation

Message by Stan Allen, MAGIC Live!

As strange it may seem, I'm reaching out today to promote someone else's convention. I'm not involved in the production of this convention, nor am I booked to work it. I've purchased a registration, reserved a hotel room, and I look forward to going.

I'm talking about The Workshop, sponsored by IBM Ring 129 of Kansas City, and produced by David Sandy. I attended a couple of these a number of years ago, and I've had to wait fourteen years for David to bring the event back. Finally, he has.

If you know David, then you know how well he does everything - magic cruises, POPS symphonic concerts, festivals, etc. - and The Workshop is no exception. Trust me, it's all going to be First Class and Good Fun.

But lots of events are done well and provide a great time for all. The reason I'm writing this is that The Workshop offers something unusual, something I think is great - hands-on teaching sessions. During these eight special workshops, you don't just watch the lecturer explaining the work. You have the props in your hands, with experts floating around the room to personally coach you. I can't think of a better way to learn.

There are lots of other great reasons you should consider The Workshop, which you can discover online. I just wanted to mention three things: 1. its David Sandy, and he's never let us down. 2. It's limited to just 200 people. 3. Hands-on sessions.

The Workshop is October 5-8 in St. Joseph, Missouri (just a short ride from the Kansas City International Airport). Visit www.ring129workshop.com for details.

See you there!

12. Handless Magician Fools Penn & Teller
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded by Jim Rice (USA)

MagicPeaceLove writes, "The word 'inspiring' gets thrown around a lot but my pal Mahdi Gilbert (previously) really deserves it.

"Born without hands, Mahdi decided to devote his life to sleight-of-hand card magic, a task that seemed self-evidently ridiculous until he started inventing his own technology from scratch...and fooling some top cardmen.

I've watched with joy and amazement these last five years as Mahdi has progressed and made a name for himself literally all around the world, culminating in his recent appearance on Penn & Teller's 'Fool Us,' where he did just that.

The aristocrat magician who turned his back on his family's banking empire to do card tricks for The Queen

Magician Drummond Money-Coutts on turning his back on his family's banking empire to do card tricks - and the stunt that nearly killed him...

My father, Crispin Money-Coutts, the 9th Baron Latymer, works for Coutts, the family bank, so when I left school at 18, I went into banking. I spent six months at Goldman Sachs and knew straight away it wasn't for me.

What I really wanted was to become a professional magician. As a little boy, I'd been fascinated by anything mysterious - I was shy, introverted and unhappy for a large part of my childhood, but magic was always my escape……..
