"[Here's something that] can help you if you're planning to put on a character show together: a character brief... In a nutshell, a character brief is where you write down key aspects of your new character... What this does is give you a framework into which you can peg various gags and situations."

4. MAGIC Gifts
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine

The December issue of MAGIC Magazine is now out, and it's packed with plenty of "gifts" for magicians everywhere.

Our cover subject is World Champion Hector Mancha. How did this Spanish close-up magician, who does a pickpocket act, walk off (barefoot, no less) with the Stage Grand Prix at FISM last summer? He tells all. And even offers our readers an "ice-breaker" trick as a bonus!

Forty years ago, Doug Henning had become a star on Broadway, but relatively few people had seen him work. That changed, as did the future of stage conjuring, on December 26, 1975 when "The World of Magic" was broadcast live to millions of people across the US. And we've got the story, including a 33-minute exclusive video of Doug talking about that first special.

There's also a profile on Italian bubble master Marco Zoppi, the story of a year-round magic Santa, and reports on the LA Conference on Magic History, Anthony Reed's "Encore" show, MINDvention, Rafael's thirty-year celebration, Magic & Meaning Conference, Shanghai Magic Festival & Competition, and Harry Houdini returning as a life-size figure.

Plus there's magic: a "First Look" at Implasusibilities by Hudson Taylor, "Loving Mentalism" by Ian Rowland, "Bent on Deception" by Mike Bent, and "Monk's Way" by Steve Reynolds.

Of course, there's also Mike Caveney, Mark Kornhauser, Simon Coronel, and our team of "Marketplace" reviewers, plus "Comings & Goings" in Hollywood, San Francico, Canada, at sea, and on television.

The December 2015 issue of MAGIC Magazine is currently available in print and digitally.

7. Children's Magic: A Fun Simple Prop! - #384 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

I thought I would share an interesting and simple prop I use at my shows that is really not magical in nature at all but serves several purposes. I was talking to a friend about it the other day and thought I would share it with you all.

It is interesting to note that when doing children's magic, it is often the journey you take people on that is often times more fun for the audience then the main effect itself. This tends to be the nature of kid show performances. Kids want to have fun and the journey you take them on should be as much fun if not more fun than the main trick itself.

With this in mind, I love the use of funny props or comedy props used in the course of the show that really have nothing to do with magic but are used to make the journey and experience a fun one for all who are watching, both kids and adults. If we are there to entertain, then we do not always have to spend 100% of our time entertaining with just magic alone.

There are also times in a kid show performance where you know people are going to do certain things. This cannot be any more true than when performing for a birthday party. You just know from the nature of a birthday party performance that certain things will happen in the course of the show by the adults or parents. These are often things you cannot control and are not in nature wrong by any means but can slow down the performance.

One of these situations that happen for me all the time is when people want to take photos during the performance. When little Joey is up on stage, mom and dad are inclined to want to snap photos left and right. This really does not bother me at all because I am there to make Joey and his parent's day the most magical possible while solving the problems they hired me for.

I started thinking that there must be a way in which when this happens, I can be prepared so that I can add humor to this moment and not cause the show to slow down the pace. I wanted to devise a way in which the situation was prepared for by me in some fun manner.

When parents did take photos during the show, the problem for me became that the shots and flash would go off leading to a kind of bad photo because the parent has no idea when to snap a good shot. This happens simply because they do not know the show or what I am going to do next. I tried to figure out a fun way to give them a cue to take a good shot but have it play for laughs and be entertaining to the show format itself.

The solution was a simple clapper board used in movies. I got mine at a novelty store for a few bucks. You can probably find them most anywhere if you keep your eyes open. Now I place my stage name on the board and my website URL. I keep this behind my table at all times and I am ready to go.

This can be used in several ways. If you see someone about to take a shot, you can scream, "WAIT!!!!!" then run back get the clapper board, pose and get the laugh and a decent shot at the same time. The other way is if the parent does not know when a good shot might be there for the b-day party child. This is when you can cue them and take out the board, pose and say, "Kodak Moment Take One!". In both ways it gets a laugh but serves a purpose.

Now I have created comedy in the show and the show still flows even when a situation like this comes up. It not only helps the parents, but it shows how much of a professional I am that I have thought of something for the situation when it occurs.

Also, the beauty of having your name and URL on the board is that now every single photo that is taken is branded with your information. You know they will show the picture around long after you leave. This is effective marketing done in a fun manner. Long after you are gone, the photo on the fridge will be marketing you and anyone they show the photo to.

It is a fun little prop that I have had a lot of fun with and hope you all may as well. Enjoy.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. A Short History Of Cards
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)

There is a great deal of speculation about the history of the humble playing card. But some of the clearer elements of the story will be described below, with a particular focus on the development of the Bicycle® Card.

The earliest playing cards are believed to have originated in Central Asia. The documented history of card playing began in the 10th century, when the Chinese began using paper dominoes by shuffling and dealing them in new games. Four-suited decks with non-figurative court cards evolved in the Islamic world and the earliest authentic references to playing cards in Europe date from 1377. It was in Europe that the Court Cards started to use representations of human beings.

It is from French designs that the cards we use today are derived. France gave us the suits of spades, clubs, diamonds and hearts, and the use of simple shapes and flat colors helped facilitate manufacture. French cards soon flooded the market and were exported in all directions. They became the standard in England first, and then in the British Colonies of America. To this day other European countries use quite different suits. For example, Hearts, Leaves, Bells (round hawkbells) and Acorns in Germany; Shields, 'Roses', Bells and Acorns in Switzerland; Coins, Cups, Swords and Clubs (cudgels) in Spain and Mediterranean Italy; Coins, Cups, Swords and Batons in Adriatic Italy.

Americans began making their own cards around 1800. Some of the innovations or refinements which came from the USA included: double-headed court cards (to avoid the nuisance of turning the figure upright), varnished surfaces (for durability and smoothness in shuffling), indexes (the identifying marks placed in the cards' borders or corners), and rounded corners (which avoid the wear that card players inflict on square corners).

According to the history of Cards from the United States Playing Card Company, during this same period, cycling - on unicycles, bicycles, and tricycles - was taking the country by storm. It was also in the latter part of the decade that Russell & Morgan, the forerunners of the United States Playing Card Company, decided to produce a line of cards of the highest quality. Employees were asked to suggest an attractive name for the new product, and a printer, "Gus" Berens, offered "Bicycle." His idea was enthusiastically accepted, and the Rider Back made its debut in 1887. Since then, while the Bicycle® brand has featured dozens of different designs, the Rider Back has never gone out of production.

Magicians continue to favour Bicycle® Cards for the way they handle so smoothly, enabling many different sleights, and also for their elegance. Increasingly new technology and lower printing costs are enabling a variety of unusual packs to be produced, including the famous 'Black Tiger' deck, and some high contrast coloured decks.

Why Bicycle-Cards.co.uk? Since Bicycle Cards are generally the magician's choice for performing magic and flourishing, this site exists to provide up to date information about what cards are available when and where - primarily focused on the UK.

We also provide monthly magic recommendations in our Trick of the Month feature and regular reviews of new cards and tricks and DVDs, competitions, a list of UK Magic Links and a resource for finding the cheapest bicycle card (for single decks).

Bicycle-Cards.co.uk is run by Philip Sweeting, an award-winning semi-professional close-up magician operating in the South East of England.

As time permits me also guest post at MagicDirect - you can read my reviews/articles here.

Please note, Bicycle® Cards are produced by the USPCC. We have no official link with USPCC but are simply fans of these great cards for magic.

11. Japan Magic 2016
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Critelli (US)

March 16, 2016 - departure for Japan

March 27, 2016 - departure back to the USA

What if . . . . . . I told you that you could go to a three-day Close-up Magic convention in Tokyo, Japan and all it would cost would be about $US3500?

You'd tell me to get back on my medication.

But . . . what If I told you that for about that price you would

Spend a total of eleven days in Japan
See some incredible sights of Tokyo by day and night (Magic bars and plenty more . . . )
Take some day tours to fantastic towns and sights outside of Tokyo (either by the fastest and most comfortable trains in the world or private coach)
Spend one night in an authentic Japanese inn (Ryokan)
Stay in incredibly clean and comfortable 3 - 4 stars hotels in Tokyo
Dine on some of the best food in the world at a Magic party and award show that is the climax to three-days of a Close-up Magic convention that YOU will have the opportunity to PARTICIPATE in as you have NEVER participated in any other Magic convention
Meet some world-famous Magical superstars
Become friends with people from Japan and a few other places called "the rest of the world" Have the time of your life . . .

Well, now you might say,

"Tell me more, Japan Lover!"

OK, The Japan Cup wants YOU to attend. The Japan Cup also knows that you MIGHT have a significant other who may only want to see some of the shows and attend the Award Party (believe me, this is a MUST GO TO event!). There is a slight difference between the "Full Convention
Attendee" (show, lectures, workshops, surprises like you will not believe, the Award Party) and the "Show and Party Only Attendee." The price difference is about $100.

The rest of the package is a chance to experience the beauty of Japan, the wonder of its culture and history, and the hospitality and friendliness of the Japanese people.

Once you visit Japan, You Will Be Back.

So, we have put together a Japan Magic 2016 Package that is for the casual traveler who is on a budget, likes new and wonderful and safe adventures, and does not need a minute-by-minute schedule! Of course, there will be tours for the small group (we are looking at under 12 people), but if you are like I am, you love surprises and the freedom to
NOT do some things. We got you covered, but we also predict you will
LOVE every minute of what we have to offer.

This is a first for me, but the real professional behind this is Sakura
Nakazato - THE best travel agent that I have ever met. Believe me, even if you don't take us up on this offer, call her in the future for ANY and ALL of your international travel needs. She loves Magicians and she likes to do favors for me! I am very lucky!

So, IF you have any interest in this, PLEASE email me as soon as possible.

Do we have all the details and final costs down? No.

Do we need to have SOME idea of people who are very interested in this great trip now? Yes.

We are looking at some deadlines for booking what we need to book by the early part of December - flights (costs vary from $1300 to $1500 depending on where you live in the USA) - and we would have to have some deposits in.

There are many other things I would run by you, but this is a first notification. If Japan Magic 2016 works, OUTSTANDING! If we don't have enough interest (and that is a few as 6 or so), then we tried.

Contact me for more information and talk.

Thank you,

Paul Critelli - MagicPaul@aol.com

13. The Magician Business Podcast
--------------------------------------------
Message by Julian Mather (Australia)

What's 4 ears, 2 mouths, takes 23 hours by plane to get from one side to the other and has been listened to 100,000 times?

It's the Magician Business podcast hosted by Australian magician Julian Mather and his UK compatriot Ken Kelly.

The Magician Business podcast is a rich resource of business and marketing focused discussions with prominent magicians and entertainers like Eric Knaus (the Great Zucchini), Jeff McBride, Marvin Berglas, Doug Scheer, Paul Romhany. You'll find everything except ... tricks. This is all about generating bookings, turning it into income and looking after you and your family.

It's not all big names. These well-known performers are complimented by workers from the magic trenches. Each share tips and strategies born from their years of experience.

I asked Ken and Julian to fill in some of the gaps behind this somewhat hidden enterprise.

Who are Ken and Julian anyway?

Ken and Julian are a lucky accident. Our weaknesses have become our strength. Julian flicks a creative switch in his head and produces great content giving little thought to how it could be best delivered.

Ken's not so fussed on the writing but goes borderline OCD when it comes to testing and measuring just how well online content is doing ... and he's really good at it.

We like to think our audience are the winners. Ours is a unique two person voice. We celebrate our differing approaches and put ego to the side. Whatever works best is our method of the moment until it all changes again - and it will - and we go back to the drawing board.

Why did you start the Magician Business Podcast?

We're working magicians and we're doing okay. Not all magicians are.

Magicians by design often focus on the creative side of things and overlook simple business fundamentals. We all know someone like this.

Ken and I both have personal stories of older magicians we know who have spent decades bringing joy and wonder to the world and now are faced with difficult retirements because they never planned for their futures.

We want to change that.

There was a time where you could get by with a simple Yellow Pages ad, a solid act and lifetime of goodwill. Not anymore. The internet is crucial to you bringing home the bacon. The internet is also overwhelming and ever changing.

We want to be magician's guides, to stop them going down dead ends, to show them the best paths to take though the online landscape. This is territory we know well and thrive in.

Not that we work alone. We seek out the best practices by bring you the voices of those who are succeeding though our podcast series. We apply their ideas, test the process and share the results by pulling back the curtains on our own personal websites and sometimes sharing a bit too much information.

What's different about Magician Business?

We never thought we would quote Oprah Winfrey, but here goes ... "The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work."

This is not a place where you will find the 7 Secrets To Online Success or 5 SEO Tips Only The Pros Know. We firmly believe that there are no right answers to all of this. There are however best practices.

These best-of-ideas are what we bring to you through our podcasts.
Thinking that great SEO and a sexy website will solve your booking downturn is folly. This is about expanding your horizons and growing as a person as much as it is about filling your calendar.

So where is the catch?

"All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust."
- J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

As magicians we know that pixie dust doesn't really work. Faith and trust have taken a battering over the years so it's no surprise that many will be looking for the catch.

Maybe this can be your pleasant surprise of the week; there's none.

We do offer paid memberships to our training courses if you want to take things to the next level however everything on the site is free.
Sometimes we ask for an email address. That too results in us sending you quality training for free that many rub their eyes in disbelief that we are just giving away.

This is our motivation ...

The Careful Builder

I saw them tearing a building down, a gang of men in my home town. A heave and a ho and a yes yes yell they swung a beam and a big wall fell.
I said to the foremen are these men skilled like the ones you'd use if you had to build?
He laughed and said 'oh no indeed, the most common labour's all I need.'
Because I can destroy in a day or two.
What it takes a builder ten years to do.

So I thought to myself as I went my way, which of these rolls am I willing to play.
Am I one who's tearing down as I carelessly make my way around.
Or am I one who builds with care so my family, my community was a little better
Because I was there.

Everything can be found at www.magicianbusiness.com

You can listen to the episodes directly on the site or you can subscribe to iTunes. It's all explained on the site.

We are currently in recess after Series 1 and working on other projects - like www.kidsentertainerhub.com - before we fire up for Series 2. Mind you there are over 50 episodes there which will keep your head spinning with new ideas for months to come.

14. Stars Of The Future 2015
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mandy Davis (UK)

This was the first occasion that The Magic Circle's Young Magicians Club provided the whole of this fun and insightful show. The compere was their Chairman, Kevin Doig who told the audience how every monthly workshop starts with the members being asked how they are feeling with the expected answer 'Fantastic!' being the correct response - and this was the one he elicited from the cast backstage.

Oscar Leonard had won the Member of the Month trick performance competition four times in a row! Oscar came front of curtain and performed a four card selection and subsequent revelations.

Dean Leavy was the first stage act and he started with random numbers being written on a pad by several volunteers, then a spoof word prediction followed by a giant word prediction and then a nice presentation of Pop Eyed Pips. The numbers were referred to again before Dean performed Topsy Turvy Bottle in tube and ended by changing the champagne bottle he'd been using into a fruit juice which was given out to a member of the audience. Finally the numbers, when added, proved to be the day's date!

As Kevin was talking to the audience once more, Oscar Leonard interrupted with another card trick, then Calum McClure opened his act with the Hold Up trick, Tommy Wonder version, although the handling was a little clumsy. His Coins in Glass was smooth and Coins to Pocket showed how good he is working this kind of magic. Callum had a slight mishap as he demonstrated Francis Menotti's Shuffled Words routine - several of the cards dropped to the floor but the trick was smoothly recovered, a testament to Calum's performing skills. He ended with packets of shuffled cards in two glasses matching in value as each was revealed.

Kevin began to get 'irritated' as Oscar pushed him out of the way to produce some rope and a nut from a card box in spite of a deck of cards being shown there; then performed a nice nut on and off the rope routine.

Joe Olyade performed a silent billiard ball routine. He continued with a card trick that ended with a squashed '8 ball'. His mind reading started with a ball of paper being thrown to the audience and the catcher chose that a four letter word should be formed and a second spectator chose the initial of the word - T. A third spectator decided the word would be TEAR - and this was found written inside an envelope that had been stuck to the curtains the whole time!

Oscar infuriated Kevin once more - this time providing a very good handcuff and jacket routine.

The final performer was David Hardman whose performance skills shined through along with his ingenious presentations. David had won the Originality, Comedy and first prize awards at last year's one day convention - J-Day. He opened with a white silk, representing his skin. When shown to a drawing of the sun the silk turned red as his skin would do in summer. The silk was then passed through a children's plastic paddling pool in spite of there being no hole in it. Then the silk vanished - and reappeared in a bucket of water. David ended his act with his signature PomPom stick routine using his own presentation about Facebook friends.

The show had one or two glitches and gaps but the boys, yes all boys, were enthusiastic and professional about their magic - the future is bright!
