4. Seven Lucky Tricks in All!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine

The October issue of MAGIC Magazine is now out with amazing magic by amazing magicians!

Our "In One" section features On A Roll, a complete routine with dice by Gregory Wilson. Steve Reynolds' "Your Magic" has three card offerings by Jack Carpenter, Trini Montes, and Jean-Thomas Sexton. Steve continues his "Monk's Way" series with something he calls "Eas(ie) Queen(ie) Mont(ie)." Ian Rowland shares an interesting force and then looks at how it might be dressed up for mentalism purposes. And another miracle from Finn Jon, this time an Out of This World effect with jumbo cards and pencils.

But that's not all.

There's also the behind-the-scenes story of Mat Franco's television special and Las Vegas show, complete coverage of MAGIC Live 2015 from the opening treasure map to the final $100,000 Quest, and the amazing tale of UK mentalist Peter Turner.

Of course, there's Mike Caveney, Mark Kornhauser, Simon Coronel, and our team of "Marketplace" reviewers, plus a peek at Matt Marcy's "Disillusioned" web series, the new look of Houdini in Appleton, "A Moment with..." Larry Wilson, and a rememberance of Johnny Aladdin.

The October 2015 issue of MAGIC Magazine is now available in print and digitally.

5. The Magic Word Podcast - The Artful Comedy Of Robert Baxt
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

The second in the two part series of "Conversations with Artists" (recorded at the Texas Association of Magicians convention earlier this month) continues this week with a lively discussion with comedy magician, Robert Baxt. Last week I featured the delightful Peter Samelson who talked about crafting an act.

This week, Robert and I talk about magic as an art and how it can be "judged" in contests and whether it could be judged as athletic competitions like the Olympics. Also we talk about "bringing the funny" and connecting with your audience. There is so much to absorb in this podcast and Robert imparts so much information that it is like trying to get a drink from a fire hydrant. He certainly has opinions and is not afraid to share any of them. There is a lot to learn in this podcast.

I recorded the podcast with the intent of it being a much shorter chat and actually part of a daily update from the T.A.O.M., but I could quickly see that we were going down a very interesting journey. So unfortunately, we captured this recording outside the dealers' room which meant that there was significant foot traffic and ambient noise. I don't think the extraneous sound affects the recording too much as the recording device I use is quite dynamic and picks up directional sounds very well, but I thought I should just mention it.

You can read the blog, see some photos, listen to the podcast and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/256-robert-baxt

6. Festivals and Low Budgets - #376 - Kyle Peron

So what happens if you market to a festival and they are interested but keep telling you that they have a "limited" or a "low" budget? The first thing to realize is that they may be telling you the truth. The best avenue to take is to not assume that they are trying to get something for nothing.

As a professional, it is your job to work with them and engage them in conversation. Ask them to tell you what their needs are for the event and what they are looking for. By doing this, you are getting them to start conversation so that you can listen and lock in on those needs. It also begins to show them your worth and the value you can add to their event.

So by doing this first I can weed out those who really may not have a large budget or I can find out if by chance they stated that because they were not sure who I am or why I am different than anyone else. My goal is to show value to them and get them to see me as someone who can offer them something others simply cannot. This starts with great customer service.

Another thing you want to be aware of is if they state a low budget before you get a chance to tell them what you offer. You want to always offer festivals multiple packages that are based upon a tiered system of pricing. I usually offer 3 package types for festivals and each one is structured in such a way to allow any festival of any size to be able to have me and still fit their budget needs.

So if they mention low budget, start to let them know you understand their needs and that is why you have
developed different packages to address the needs of festivals like theirs. This gets their interest and they will like the fact that you are willing to work with them.

If they still have a budget issue after seeing your package and price options, there may be ways that you can still offer them a show at a reduced day rate. Instead of doing 2 shows you may decide to only do 1 show and reduce the price. Instead of doing 2 hours of strolling magic, you can suggest a single hour for a reduced fee.

I also learn to listen well because I can often barter an agreement for those festivals that may really want me but may not have the funding or the sponsorships available.

For example, I can often times get them to give me a large vendor space and an awning, chairs and table for FREE.

This way I can have a full day BOR table for the entire festival and not have to pay for it. The idea is to never reduce your fee unless you are getting something back from them. They have to realize that you have value and your time is money. By lowering a price but still giving them exactly the same thing, you decrease your value.

However if you do barter make sure that it goes both ways. This means that if you offer a shorter show etc. then they should give something back in return. To simply do a shorter show without anything from them, is not bartering and does not benefit you.

Some of the ways you can work events like this are:

They get a sponsor for you: This means that the sponsor pays your fee to be there and not the festival. In return for the sponsorship, you agree to mention their name throughout the show, they get a booth or table near your show area and the festival committee agrees to do advertising for the sponsor at the festival in the way of banners, ads, and flyers.

A shorter show vs. free stuff from them: This means that you offer a shorter show or a shorter number of shows in return for a free booth space all day as well as free advertising throughout the festival. I have done this before and it can work. You just must get a contract out to make sure that both parties agree upon the conditions and promise to do what is agreed upon. If you are selling BOR, a short 20 minute show would be more than fair in return for a full day's booth space. You will have to see what your show and time is worth though.

Grants: They get the funds through a grant they can obtain. There are many grants available and open for
communities. Some forget that they are available. If you mention it to them, it is another way in which they can look into it and a better chance of them being able to receive the funds to pay for your services.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

10. Rob Zabrecky Returns To The Steve Allen Theater
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)

Los Angeles Times

Rob Zabrecky returns to The Steve Allen Theater with magic, music

By Jessica Gelt
Magician Rob Zabrecky will mount a one-night-only variety extravaganza Friday at the Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater in L.A. "An Evening With Rob Zabrecky" will mark the first time that the performer -- an audience favorite at the Magic Castle -- will return to the theater since 2012, when he staged a series of sold-out one-man shows.

This time, the first half of the show will be magic, and the second half will be music.

See the most-read stories in Entertainment this hour >>
"I let go of music for many years. I thought it was a chapter that was closed," says Zabrecky, who once fronted the L.A. indie-rock band Possum Dixon, which put out three albums on Interscope Records. "But I got the bug to be on stage again and play music, and after a couple of shows here and there, it feels wonderful."

In the last 15 years, Zabrecky has been cultivating a darkly comic character named Odd Man. His gaunt visage with hollowed cheekbones and close-cropped black hair makes the character appear out of his time, as if he just emerged from a seance in San Francisco in the 1920s.

Zabrecky's unusual look and devotion to craft has garnered much attention. He performed in Australia this summer and will appear in South Africa in a couple of weeks.

At his home base, Hollywood's Magic Castle, he won the award of "stage magician of the year" in 2011 and 2012 and more recently was named "parlor magician of the year." Since 2009, he has hosted an invitation-only variety and magic show called "The Brookledge Follies" at the home of Irene Larsen, who, with her late husband Bill and his brother Milt, co-founded the Magic Castle.

The Follies inspired the macabre indie-rock band Dead Man's Bones fronted by actors Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields.

"We fell in love with the place and what was happening here," Gosling told The Times in 2010. His respect for Zabrecky and his art has not faded, and Gosling cast Zabrecky as the MC in his recent directorial debut, "Lost River."

Zabrecky is developing a TV show featuring his performance and what he promises to be a cast of "super interesting people." But for now he's concentrating on his upcoming show at Steve Allen. To wit, he's rehearsing with musicians Kristian Hoffman, Byron Reynolds, Matt Devine, Fred Sablan and Steve Gregoropolis on a trove of Possum Dixon songs in addition to interesting covers, including "Janitor" by the 1970s Long Beach post-punk band Suburban Lawns and "Dreaming" by Blondie. Hoffman will also accompany Zabrecky on piano during the magic portion of the show.

"This is a really exciting time for me," says Zabrecky, who often seems astounded by the strange arcs of his life. "How did this happen? I guess the answer is, embrace your inner weirdo and good things will come."
