2. University Course for Magicians 2015
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tom Stone

A university course for experienced magicians will be given this summer in Stockholm, Sweden. Three weeks fulltime, June 8-30.

Like any other university course, is free of charge for EU citizens.

Non-EU citizens are also welcome, but unfortunately not free but to a cost of 36000 SEK (about 4000 USD).

Depending on your nationality and your government's approach to education you might be eligible for student loans or grants.

Johan Ståhl and Tom Stone are the main facilitators.

The main topics are misdirection and dramatic structures. It will draw heavily on the participants' own experiences.

The study model is very hands-on with focus on research and practical experiments. The course is given in English.

You'll get 4.5 university credits and university diploma from the Stockholm University of the Arts - something that might open doors that previously have been closed to you.

To apply you need at least 5 years of practical experience and submit a work sample, 5-10 minutes performance on video (if possible; single camera, unedited). Last date of application: April 15.

The pace will be intense, and it will be exhausting, and it will be insanely fun!

For those in the conjuring field, please share this information so that all magicians are aware of this opportunity. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

Official information and application forms are found here:

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

215: Brad Henderson, the Esoteric Escamoteur - Part One, Magic As Art

Brad Henderson spends a lot time thinking about magic. He also contributes a lot of this thinking to magic online forums as well as physical magazines. He is a professional mentalist, former curator of Richard Garriott's magic collection, author, collector, staff member of Jeff McBride's Mystery School, and so much more.

In this first of a two part podcast with Brad, I listen as he gives a mini-lecture on presenting magic as "art" and the importance of making each performance a work of art. This podcast is not full of stories, but it does contain invaluable advice that every magician should hear.

And you can read the blog, see some photos, listen online or download the podcast as an MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/brad-henderson-part-one You can also listen through iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn, and Feedpress.

4. April Digital Edition of Genii
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman - Editor Genii Magazine

The paper issue was mailed last week, and the digital edition of Genii's April issue is now live for all subscribers. We have a whopping 13 videos embedded in this month's issue, in addition to the two audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer.

On our cover is the astounding mentalist Asi Wind, universally acclaimed as one of the greats. John Lovick writes his story, and also does a long video interview with Asi in our digital issue (thanks, Koz!). And we have another half dozen videos of Asi in action in the digital edition.

Our wonderful group of columnists return:

* Eugene Burger riffs on the social performance of close-up magic; with a video in the digital edition.

* "Spirito," a trick no one has seen, talks to John Gaughan.

* Jim Steinmeyer conjures up even more ghosts with "The Apport."

* "Bobby Bernard's Principle X" has intrigued David Britland for decades … now it's your turn.

* Al Cohen turns into a performer before your eyes in "Memoirs of a Magic Dealer."

* Tricks times three in "Magicana" courtesy of Andi Gladwin, along with a video in our digital edition.

* Dick Cavett performed at The Magic Castle, so says Daniel Ulin in "Knights at … ."

* Mr. Lovick returns to tantalize us by "Lifting Reno."

We have, sadly, obituaries for Rene Lavand written by Tina Lenert, and Dean Dill written by John Carney.

David Regal, Joe M. Turner, and Will Houstoun turn our attention to the magic marketplace.

If you're not already a subscriber, remember that all 77 years of Genii are available online at no charge to our readers, and a digital subscription for one year, $35, gives you access to over 57,000 pages of content! www.geniimagazine.com

5. FISM - Cavour Square
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

Piazza Cavour, dating from the medieval period, became the centre of the city's commercial and political life in the early middle ages and remains hugely important in the city's social, political and commercial life. Here you'll find the seat of government, as well as outside cafés, and market day on Wednesday. There are many cafés and shops down one side of the square and all around are some of the finest buildings in the city. The old fish market is on the left hand side of the square.

It houses some enormous marble tables, which were originally used to display and sell fish. Nowadays, they are used as display areas for artists and market sellers. In the center of the square are a statue of Pope Paul IV and the circular Pigna fountain built in 1543 incorporating some Roman remains. Around the square are several interesting buildings including 3 palaces, and the neoclassical theater, Teatro Amintore Galli. Behind the theater is the 15th century fortress, Castel Sismondo, used for cultural events.

The square's importance began with the building of the Palazzo dell'Arengo. This was the where the city's Grand Council would meet. Piazza Cavour developed further with the building of the Palazzo del Podestá in 1334 and with the construction in the 1400s of the nearby Castel Sismondo, but the square really started to take its present shape and form from the 16th century onwards.

Palazzo dell'Arengo was built in 1204, with mostly gothic, but with some Romanesque elements. It is situated to the right of Pallazzo del Podestá and seems to form a unity with this building. Both look far larger than they really are.

Palazzo del Podestà was built in 1334. This palace is predominantly gothic, although more modern styles found its way into the Palazzo after the nearby Palazzo Garampi was built in the early 17th century. Three gothic arches make this palace impressive. Today it is mainly used as a place for exhibitions.

Palazzo Garampi is the most modern of the three, built in 1687 and is now the major's office. Following the completion of this palace, the facades of the neighbouring two were slightly altered. All three palaces were restored in the early 20th century after an earthquake.

7. Remarkable Magic #384 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Austin is getting ready for Wondershow!

Well to be honest the really big deal coming up in Austin, Texas is the mammoth South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) that is preparing to take over our idyllic little city, fill up our hotels, crowd our restaurants and make the freeways busier than ever! I am one of those jaded folks whose main goal is to miss all this additional excitement as much as possible. Of course I am also the guy who lived in Las Vegas and spent most of his time trying to avoid visiting the Strip.

There is however a rather nifty little magic touch being staged in the city during the craziness this year, and I am looking forward to attending it. On March 20th and 21st there will be two performances of Wondershow. What you may ask is Wondershow? I guess the easy answer is that it's a modern vaudevillian show with an emphasis on the magic arts. It also features music, comedy, juggling and storytelling. The show is a hip update on a traditional format and promises to be a whole bunch of fun.

Producer Patrick Terry created the first of his acclaimed Wondershow productions in 2013 in New York City. It was very successful and for first time the production will be transplanted from the Big Apple. I suspect it will find a receptive home here on the "Third Coast" at the Vortex Theatre. Hey, our local creed is "Keep Austin Weird" and I think this hybrid variety show will do its bit to increase some of the weirdness factor.

I am particularly excited that the show stars one of my very favorite magicians Andrew Goldenhersh. If you have never seen Andrew perform you have missed a wonderful experience. I am firmly on record as hating straitjacket escapes-with the enthusiastic exception of the gloriously left field and brilliantly executed one that Goldenhersh performs! In fact to call it a straitjacket escape is to sell it as short as describing the Magic Castle as a magic club. If you have never seen the award winning Andrew Goldenhersh in action then he is worth the price of admission to Wondershow all on his own to catch his performance.

There are, however, other goodies to entice audiences to Wondershow this weekend. Also being imported for the event will be Marcus Monroe-a rock star amongst jugglers, and Vinny DePonto, an innovative conjuror hailed by the New York Daily News as "delightful and terrifying." Producer/creator Patrick Terry will be hosting the event.

I suspect that the next Wondershow will be back in New York and if you miss seeing it in Austin then watch out for it when it is back on its home turf. It is always exciting to see magic finding new homes in theatres and showrooms across the country. The best way to spread the word about what great entertainment magic can be is to expose more lay people to it. I applaud everyone for doing his or her bit towards this end.

In recent years Los Angeles has been the home to many creative and highly successful theatrical magic events. It is refreshing to see the scope and nature of the events being offered to show goers. Notwithstanding the incredible success of full blown productions like "The Illusionists" and "Masters of Illusion," it is heartening to note that lay audiences are no longer locked into the biggest is best philosophy that once dominated magic shows. I think we all have a lot to thank Ricky Jay (not to mention his 52 assistants) for in this regard. Thank you Ricky!

I have an amazing collection of books, DVDs, tricks and routines available and would be delighted if you checked them out at www.lewinenterprises.com

8. Festivals - Show Distance - #355 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

Travel distance will be a big factor not in only what fees you charge but also how you market to various festivals.

The first decision you must make is whether you want to sleep in your own bed at night or if you are willing to travel greater distances and stay at hotels. The choice really is yours and it is one you want to decide upon before you start your marketing efforts.

You must decide just what your festival performance area will be and how far you are willing to go to get there. I find that having a map and drawing a large circle from my home to the farthest area I am willing to work is a great way to start figuring out not only my travel radius but also travel fees. I call this zone mapping.

For myself, my travel radius is about 100 - 150 miles from my home base. I then draw circles in pen for every twenty miles out from my base. This is my way of gauging how far a festival is from me and how much I should add on for an appropriate travel fee. It also easily tells me if I may need to add a hotel fee for shows further away. I keep this map on the wall in my office and near my phone. It can be a great tool when you are making or taking a call.

There are many software programs and online apps that allow you to be able to customize maps for yourself. Use these as they are great tools. You might want to place the final zone map in an application called Dropbox.com so you have access to it wherever you go.

If you do make the choice to travel farther distances for your festival shows, then include hotel accommodations in with your contract and add this price to your day rate. The idea here is to still keep it simple for the festival group to make a decision. I find that adding the fee to my day rate makes it easier for them and does not confuse them. I have also found that many times some hotels are corporate sponsors of the event and the festival committee has access to some of these rooms. Free accommodations, everyone wins.

I don't believe that it is a good practice to offer a standard base fee + gas fee + travel fee + hotel fee. If you lay it out like this, it discourages festivals. It works against you. Learn what YOU need to do the show and create a base fee that covers all of your costs.

I have also experienced, at some of the larger festivals, that hotels in the area often sponsor the festival or fair you are attending. If you can, you can always ask or check on the festival website to see who the sponsors are for that year. If a hotel is a sponsor for the festival, you may be able to get the rooms comped for you as a means of promoting the local hotel that keeps you.

If you have a big hotel chain, with locations everywhere you plan to work, you could try to obtain them as a sponsor of your own. They not only supply you with the accommodations you need but pay so much money for each festival you perform at. In exchange, they get mention at every show you do. This can work well for you and you never know unless you ASK. I know this can happen, as I have seen it in my travels.

If you cannot get a sponsor for your hotel stay, then you may still want to try and keep your hotel room cost down. It is always a good idea to check into hotels in the area of the festival. A hotel that is both easy to get to and affordable, is most ideal. I say a close hotel, as often times you will not get out of the festival until the festival closes and you then get permission to enter the grounds with your vehicle to pack back up. This means it could be a long and tiring night. A hotel that is close works wonders for this situation.

When it comes to accommodations, you may not want to be too particular about where you stay. Lower rates have been the norm at some hotels if you do your homework prior to heading out on the road. Also, look into the entertainment books for the city or area that you will be performing for. If you are doing a tour and doing several festivals in the same area, these entertainment books can save you money on meals, hotels etc. Also, you may want to use your credit card rewards points if you have them. Most places will deduct a fee from your hotel stay and in some cases you may get the night for free.

AAA is another great idea for the festival performer who is traveling farther away from home for his or her shows. Not only will it save you in the event of a vehicle breakdown, but you can get some great savings on hotels, rental cars etc. I have AAA and have been very glad I have had it on many occasions.

Now do not get confused here. Many of you may be saying why doesn't the festival put you up at a hotel? Well some of them can and some may offer to do it. However, my goal is to make it easy on the festival. What I do is know ahead of time if I feel I have to stay overnight. This is often my choice and not the festivals. I am the one deciding if I need to stay or not.

Because of this, I try and make it easy on the festival. If I know I need a hotel room, I simply add it to my base fee when I offer my packages to the festival. By doing it in this fashion, I can choose the hotel I want to stay in and make it easy for myself and for the festival in the process.

I have a new book out I would like you to know about all about working the Festival market. If you would like additional and detailed information on this topic, please see my book/ebook at: http://www.kpmagicproducts.com/Festival_Magic.html

13. Shoe Box Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dal Sanders

Brian Daniel South looked at today's magic kits and realized that they just don't inspire young people like the kits of the past did. He wants to produce a great kit that will not only entertain young people but will also create a thirst to explore the art of magic. Brian is launching a new company that he calls Shoe Box Magic.

You may remember Brian from a company called Creative Magic (the company that brought you the Shadow Tent, the Change Cap, and Bigger Wands) or from his current company, TeachByMagic.com.

Brian has assembled a core team of advisors to guide this journey that share that same passion. That team includes Stan Allen - Editor and Publisher of MAGIC Magazine, Kevin James - Legendary magic creator (with millions of You Tube Views), David Goodsell - Editor of the MUM for over 20 years and Past National President of The Society of American Magicians, Michael Mode - Creative consultant and inspirational speaker and David Kaye - Expert kid show performer and author.

Now Brian is looking to expand his team to include 1,000 consultants for Shoe Box Magic. Becoming a Shoebox Magic consultant is simple. To join the team just subscribe to the email list and you will occasionally get surveys or polls helping us narrow down aspects of the kit (how many tricks, how are they taught, what are they made of, and so on). You will also be able to participate in occasional Google hangouts and in the end have the opportunity to buy kits before anyone else and at a consultant-only discount.

For more information or go to www.shoeboxmagic.com.

Message by Mike Norden

The 83rd Annual PCAM (Pacific Coast Association of Magicians) Convention will be held in beautiful Chilliwack, BC Canada on Nov 19-22nnd, 2015. It will be a joint convention along with the '3 of Clubs Convention', a smaller regional event that rotates between Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle.

Normally held in the summer, a few factors have led to the change to hold it in November - the main ones being, time, location and talent. We are happy to report that we have secured the Coast Hotel in Chilliwack to hold the event, and that the esteemed IBM President, Shawn Farquhar, will star along with 8 other talent that are being booked as we speak. We will announce a new talent each week - but don't wait until we are done that before you book! Why? Because this unique PCAM will be limited to just 75 spots! Yes, that is correct. Just 75 spots!

Oh - and as we write this there are only 42 spots left! And we have not even launched to the public yet. So do not delay - register today at www.PCAM2015.ca

J. C. Dunn passed away on March 8, 2015 at the age of 73 doing what he liked best . . . MAGIC.

He was many things: a US Marine, a member of the Peace Corp, a US Postal employee and a Magician. J. C. was loved by everyone he touched. It was impossible not to like him. He would walk up to a stranger and start doing magic and when he left he had a friend. He probably put more smiles on people's faces than anyone I have ever known.

He was my magic student and later my best friend. Every year we would do some crazy stunt together, always doing a magic trick during those antics. We bungee jumped from a hot air balloon (catching a selected card as we fell), parachuted from an airplane, took hang-gliding lessons, piloted a para-plane, just to name a few.

At his wedding reception Billy McComb, Johnny Ace Palmer and other top magicians performed for free, just because of their love for this amazing man. Bill Larsen (President of the Magic Castle) gave J. C. a life-time membership to the Magic Castle for taking care of magic legend Johnny Platt during his final years.

After he was married J. C. and his wife Clideen moved to Paradise, California where he performed and taught magic. He was a member of I. B. M. and other magic organizations.

Heaven has gained one of our best.
