Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
Sandy
Marshall's Magic Inc. will have a booth at FISM in Rimini
next July. He will be accompanied by his wife, Susan, and
manager, Pedro Nieves all of whom are looking forward to
FISM in a big way. Sandy and Susan have even started studying
Italian so they can offer some polite conversation while
they're in the country. Sandy's dad, Jay Marshall, was a
staple at FISM, never missing one so Sandy and Susan are
trying to carry on his tradition. They had a wonderful time
at FISM in Beijing and can't wait to fly to Italy next July
to renew old friendships and make new friends over wonderful
Italian food. They LOVE Italy and will spend an extra ten
days touring the country, visiting friends and soaking up
their extraordinary culture.
Sandy
is a multiple Emmy Award-winning writer-producer-director
by trade and now runs Magic Inc. in Chicago, America's oldest
continuously family-run magic shop, where they have published
over 400 titles including, Marlo's "Revolutionary Card
Technique" and "Cardially Yours", Bobo's
"New Modern Coin Magic", "The Complete Al
Leech" and most recently, "McCombical: The Wit
and Wisdom of Billy McComb."
Sandy
himself has authored the award winning book, "Beating
a Dead Horse: The Life and Times of Jay Marshall" and
continues to lecture about his Dad virtually all over the
world. There couldn't help but be magic in his blood with
Jay as his father and Al Baker his maternal grandfather.
Sandy is a life member of the Academy of Magical Arts, where
Susan and he fund and present the annual Billy McComb/Jay
Marshall Award for Parlour Magic. He is also a member of
both the IBM and SAM.

4. December Linking Ring Is In The Mail

Message By Dennis Schick
Assistant Editor
The Linking Ring
International Brotherhood of Magicians
The December issue of The Linking Ring, the monthly publication
of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, is full of
fascinating stories and features, as usual. The cover story
is just one of them. Did author Charles Dickens' interest
in magic influence the writing of his most beloved tale,
"A Christmas Carol?" Biographer Ian Keable reveals
the possible connections.
Dale
Salwak reflects on the creative power inherent in doing
something no one has ever done before, and doing something
better than anyone else. His article is entitled "Originality,
Creativity, and the Enduring Art of Magic. It is the text
of a speech he gave in China recently.
A
lot of new events never make it to a second year, so it
is interesting to read about the Second Annual Weekend of
Wonder in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This is the public festival
of magic which Jay Scott Berry and Maxwell Blade came up
with to take magic to the people where they work, eat, and
play.
Many
people are not aware that there are deaf magicians who perform
throughout the world regularly. Thus it may also be a surprise
that in October of this year the Fifteenth Biennial World
Deaf Magicians Festival took place in Chicago. Here is a
three-page report of that convention, complete with photos.
The
One Man Parade this month is from Ralph Feldee, of New Orleans.
He brings us eight of his favorite effects. As always, artist
Tony Dunn illustrated the Parade.
Bev
Bergeron brings us "A Short History of the Egg Bag;"
John Tudor writes "A Leak in the Universe;" Skip
Way tells us about "Gifts for the Magi;" and Adele
Friel Rhindress brings us a story about deaf magician Sam
Sadler and his performing daughter, Tessa.
In
The Card Corner, Dave Neighbors gives us "Light Years
Ahead;" and Dan Alessini contributes his version of
Out of This World with "Out of This Galaxy" in
"Ways and Means;" Bill Citino takes over the Numismagic
column with "Three Coins Hangin' -- For Real;"
and Andrew Woo's Simple Diversions column is called "Abeyance
Illusion."
Jeff
Prance turns his "The Expert at the Tech Table"
over to Geraint Clarke from the United Kingdom, who reveals
his "Fate 2.0;" and Ed Solomon tells us his "The
Santa Key" tale.
The
reviewers in the Hocus in Focus section review a dozen new
magic products, and the Broken Wand pays tribute to eleven
magicians whose deaths are featured in obituaries. And all
the other regular features are included this month, including
Ring Reports, Pictures From the Past, the Youth Trivia Contest,
and Ring Events.
I.B.M.
members may download a PDF of the issue or read the digital
edition online while they are waiting for their hard copy
to arrive in the mail. For more information about the world's
largest magic organization, go to www.magician.org.

5. The Magic Word Podcast - Eugene Burger
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Eugene
Burger - How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Last
year we had a fun podcast that featured several well-known
voices of magicians reading parts of "The Night Before
Christmas". Throughout this past year, I have been
"collecting voices" again, this time with different
magicians and mentalists reading parts of "How The
Grinch Stole Christmas". I don't want to spoil the
fun of you trying to figure out who all of the voices are
in this reading, but I will tell the obvious one: it is
Eugene Burger who reads the part of the Grinch. Be sure
to listen to the very end to hear some of the outtakes and
bloopers along with a listing of the names who participated.
There is more in this podcast, too, but I don't want to
spoil the surprise here.
This
is the 200th podcast on The Magic Word. It marks an historic
milestone for me with lots of my time and energy poured
into this project just for you. It certainly hasn't been
for money as we still have no sponsors and this is offered
free of charge to everyone. Your generous donations are
always appreciated. I especially want to thank the "Friends
of The Magic Word" (all eight of you) from all around
the world who have donated over the past couple years.
This
one is my shortest podcast of the year but the hardest to
edit and put together so it seems (rather) seamless. I hope
everyone will enjoy my Christmas offering. And thanks to
all of those who helped make this a fun podcast.
You
can see photos and the names of everyone on this podcast
plus hear the story on this week's Magic Word podcast at:
http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/grinch You
can also download the podcast from iTunes, too.
Thanks
for listening,
Scotty Out!

6. Remarkable Magic #373 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin
Three
great Podcasts for you to check out.
I
am constantly amazed at some of the amazing free resources
available for magicians these days on the Internet. There
are websites, e-zines, magazines, forums and podcasts all
available to each and every magician. I certainly wish they
had been around when I was starting out in magic!
I
have been a fan of the idea of podcasts since they first
arrived on the scene. We are now, so I am told. In the great
second age of podcasting and I am pleased to hear it. The
opportunity to listen to performers discuss their art is
a tremendous benefit to the community.
I
was recently featured on a couple of relatively new podcasts
and was delighted at how well both of them were being handled.
I would like to take this opportunity to share the details
of them with you and I sincerely hope you will check them
out. I think you will like them a great deal.
The
first podcast I want to tell you about is Kris Sheppard's
Successful Performer Cast, it is a one-hour weekly interview
with various members of the magic community. Kris is a very
skillful interviewer and he does a great job of talking
his guests into revealing quite amazingly useful information
to benefit his listeners,
Kris
has featured some very interesting guest on his podcast
and I strongly recommend you visit his website to learn
more details www.successfulperformercast.com You can also
subscribe to his Podcasts via iTunes.
The
second Podcast I would like to recommend is brand new and
also shaping up to become an excellent resource. It is called
What's Your Passion and is produced/hosted by Samuel Lewis.
You can access the website at http://www.tscn.tv/category/podcast/whats-your-passion/
And also subscribe via iTunes. I think you will like Sam's
style as he follows his passion by sharing information over
the Internet.
Magic
New Zealand also gives you weekly updates from Scott Welles
about the content of his latest podcast in his The Magic
Word Podcast. At 200 episodes Scott is a real veteran of
this trio and his superb podcast is also highly recommended.
You can subscribe via iTunes and also find details at http://www.themagicwordpodcast.com
We
are lucky to have so many people working this hard to supply
us with the invaluable information and entertainment that
their podcasts supply. A great deal of dedication and work
goes into the production of broadcasts of this quality so
make sure you support them!

7. Scout Shows Year Round - #343 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
The great thing about the scout market is that you do not
have to limit yourself to working just the yearly banquet.
There is a golden secret I would like to share with you
that has tremendous value. It is something that can keep
you working the market all year, provide a valued service
and no one is doing it. Allow me to share the concept with
you in hopes that it may open your own eyes to the possibilities.
By
contacting and talking with various Boy and Girl Scout Councils,
I realized that both organizations have badges or awards
that can be earned for doing and learning about magic. Sometimes
these are referred to as merit badges but may be called
different things in various scout councils. The key point
is knowing that they do exist and that scouts can work towards
earning this badge.
If
you are keyed into problem solving for your clients, then
this raises a wonderful opportunity for you the entertainer.
Like the magic themed meetings I talked about earlier, you
can create a full scout program for the scout packs or even
girl Scout troops.
The
idea here is to provide a full meeting for the pack or troop
that you provide for them. You provide a 30 minute magic
show followed by a teaching workshop and then end with a
question and answer session. The beauty of this is that
everything you do is helping the Scouts earn their magic
badge or award.
In
the minds of the Scout Leaders and Councils, this has amazing
power and benefit for them. It serves a purpose far greater
than just entertainment alone. Now you are providing a service
that empowers the Scouts and gets them working towards something
they can feel good about. It also allows you to charge more
for the service and gets you to perform all year long performing
this program for various cub packs and girl scout troops
in and around your area.
I
started doing this a few years ago and the Scout Councils
simply love it. In fact I have even had Scout Councils team
up and bring together many packs and troops together and
make a full afternoon event just from my program alone.
What
you teach needs to be easy items with stuff around the house
that also empowers instead of frustrating. I usually do
a floating pencil effect and also jumping rubber bands are
very easy to do and I can provide the props for the scouts
to keep at next to nothing in cost. Both are tricks the
kids can do with ease and gets them excited about magic.
If
I have large groups, I teach the effects to the Scout Leaders
ahead of time and then have them assist me with the hands
on portion of the teaching workshop. This is great to do
because it gets the Leaders directly involved in the teaching
of the Scouts and empowers them as well. Allow the Scouts
to keep the items to take home with them.
The
question and answer part of the program brings the kids
back to the front area as you talk briefly about the history
of magic and the importance of keeping the secret, practice
and entertainment value. You can then allow the scouts to
ask questions that they may have and answer them for them.
You then wrap up the program by thanking everyone.
It is a great opportunity that no one is doing and can allow
you to really tap into this market in your own area and
work it all year. a quick call to your local Scout Council
can gain you great information that you can use to build
your own magic program that is geared at directly helping
Scouts to earn their magic badge.
***
I hope this information has given you an idea of what can
be done with working the Scout market. If you would like
additional and detailed information on this topic, please
see my book/ebook at: http://kpmagicproducts.com/Blue_and_Gold.html
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. Anthony Darkstone - In Conversation with Jeff McBride
- Part 4
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone USA/Europe
AD:
What can someone expect as a result of attending the School?
JMcB:
A lot of the answers can be found in some of the quotes
that you kindly obtained. Thank you for that Tony. We always
have a remarkable group of students attending The Master
Class, and other programs, at the School; we literally have
people from all over the world. At a recent Master Class
we had Chinese, American, Canadian, French, South American
and Italian students in attendance.
The
best way for anyone is to go on-line, look at the site and
email or Facebook us with any questions. I am pleased to
state that our Classes are always well attended and become
sold out very fast. The house is a fascinating mixture of
languages and skill levels, but as the Master, Eugene Burger,
says, "Magic is all about fellowship across differences,"
and the fellowship is running strong here!
AD:
The school, classes etc are all held right here in Vegas
in your home
JMcB:
Yes they are. Abbi and I open up our home and as you have
personally seen in your visits here, we have a vast area
in which we accommodate everything. In a manner of speaking,
and because of the very Nature of what we teach and explore
at the school & the time they spend here, our students
become, in a sense our "house-guests."
AD:
I personally have first-hand experience of what a great
Host you can be and just as a little surprise for you, this
would be a good time to share a quote from a very special
lady: "Jeff McBride is the best husband a wife could
ever hope to have. He wakes up happy to see me, is inspiring
in his creativity, and truly is a genius in his art. He
is kind, generous, thoughtful, affectionate, appreciative
and attentive. I am so incredibly blessed. Just thought
you all would like to know...."
JMcB:
Oh my! You have done your homework Tony. What can I say?
Except to respond by saying that Abbi is equally all of
that to me and more
I am also incredibly blessed
too! She is amazing and incredibly talented. Just thought
you all would like to know that too!
AD:
Indeed she is! She is often, her time permitting, also one
of the teachers
JMcB:
Very much so
she is, in many ways, too numerous to
go into here, very much a part of the School, its philosophy
and day-to-day running.
AD:
We have spoken of dear Eugene as the Dean but there are
other illustrious names on the Faculty...
JMcB:
Absolutely, Tobias Beckwith (by the way, nice article you
wrote on him) Bob Neale, Larry Hass and a great host of
many excellent teachers who are part of the Faculty... a
veritable list of "Who's Who in Magic." I am greatly
appreciative of all the teachers over the years that have
helped us in making the School what it is today.
AD:
Indeed. Names to conjure with (yes, pun intended). I once
spent a delightful evening over dinner with Eugene, Tobias,
Larry & Bob. How wonderful it must be for the students
to spend several days. Let's move on to a couple of other
aspects of the performer Jeff McBride. We talked earlier
about the Mask act but that is not the only "act as
seen" that you perform
JMcB:
It is the act that I am best known for internationally and
it has withstood the test of time; however, I do perform
other acts and often travel to perform a full 90 minute
show. I also am involved at various magic conventions all
over the world and whilst I am there I often lecture as
well, and on occasions also give a Master Class.

10. The S.A.M. 2015 Philadelphia Convention Is A Wise Investment

Message by Mark Weidhaas (US)
S.A.M. National Conference Executive Director
The Society of American Magicians, National President 2010-11
A
very wise man from Philadelphia said, "A penny saved
is a penny earned." You can be wise too. Go to Philadelphia
for the Society of American Magicians 2015 convention, July
1-4. Save 2,500 pennies if you register before January 1,
2015. It only makes "cents," do it today!
The S.A.M. is 2015's intimate and friendly convention where
you will learn from the experts at the many lectures, sessions
and shows. The S.A.M. agrees with Benjamin Franklin when
he says, "An investment in knowledge always pays the
best interest." Bring your family on your magic vacation.
There is so much to see and do close by the Philadelphia
Marriott Downtown.
Register and reserve your hotel room at www.magicsam.com/annual-convention.
Still only $250 for S.A.M. members, spouse, or SYM parent
and $150 for SYM members and siblings age 7-17 until 12/31/14.

11. Innovention Convention - The Unique Magic Of Liverpool
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone
Innovention
Convention - The unique Magic of Liverpool, 14th - 16th
July 2015
If
you are a working performer I recommend that you read this
article right through including the very important information
contained in the last couple of paragraphs. Many Magic Conventions
promote themselves as being different from any other Convention
but the Innovention has always lived up to the billing.
The previous two Innovention Conventions in 2010 and 2012
in Las Vegas were completely unique with world class talent,
unrivalled production values and by limiting the number
of registrations everyone attending were treated like VIP's
and had the opportunity to meet and spend time with all
of the performers and lecturers.
To
quote Nick Lewin in Magic New Zealand a couple of weeks
ago when he was talking about the recent UNCON Convention
he appeared at in Kentucky, 'It was a pleasure to perform
/ lecture at a Convention that was small enough that I got
to talk and mix with every single person attending. That
doesn't happen nearly enough in this day and age'. The Innovention
Convention in Liverpool from 14th-16th July 2015 will be
exactly the same.
The
Magic of Liverpool starts with the headquarters hotel, the
Hard Day's Night Hotel, a unique Beatles themed hotel, just
around the corner from the world renowned Cavern Club where
the Beatles began their legendary careers. This is where
most of the sessions, workshops, and interviews will take
place.
So
what makes the Innovention so different? Here are a few
reasons. The aim of the Innovention has always been to provide
a forum for all working performers, whether full time pro's,
semi pro's or part time performers, to learn from the very
best and most successful magicians and speciality entertainers
in the business.
Unlike
other Conventions, at the Innovention we feature a few pro's,
all of whom have performed thousands of shows at the very
highest level. Instead of following the usual Convention
schedules the Innovention will focus on the many performing
opportunities available to a working performer, including
stage, cabaret, corporate, private parties, close-up and
charity events.
Just
a few of the topics we will be covering include how to structure
an act, how to create your own USP, how to choose the right
tricks to suit your style, how to write comedy patter and
deliver it, the importance of production, lighting, sound
and music, microphone technique, working with audience volunteers,
and how to maximise audience reaction and build your applause.
We
have some of the most commercial and experienced performers
coming to Liverpool.
Jeff
Hobson - International Comedy Star of the hugely successful
Illusionists touring Show, currently appearing on Broadway.
Jeff has over 10,000 shows to his name in Las Vegas alone.
This will be Jeff's only Magic Convention appearance in
2015.
Michael
Goudeau - Guest Star for over 20 years, with thousands of
nightly appearances in the record breaking Lance Burton
Show at the Hacienda and Monte Carlo Casinos in Las Vegas.
Michael is also an award winning comedy writer and was responsible
for writing much of comedy material for 5 years for Penn
& Teller's 'Bullshit' TV Shows. This will be Michael's
first ever British Convention appearance.
Scott
Alexander - A very busy working pro from USA with a very
original approach, Scott has invented and routined many
commercial magic effects. This will also be Scott's debut
at a British Magic Convention.
John
Fealey - From Liverpool, John has been a featured comedy
performer in the world renowned Palazzo Shows across Europe
for nearly 20 years. John has a wealth of experience and
knowledge of stagecraft and magic. He is undoubtedly one
of magic's best kept secrets.
Graham
P. Jolley - Graham has been one of the UK's top magicians
for many years primarily making his mark in the corporate
world. Although you will probably have seen his hilarious
cabaret act at other Conventions, at the Innovention you
will get to hear about the secrets behind his success and
longevity.
Paul
Stone - Paul will act as Host & Emcee for the Convention.
A Magic and Variety Show Producer for over 35 years both
in UK and Las Vegas and with a string of successful shows
at the London Palladium Theatre including 'A Tribute to
Siegfried & Roy at the London Palladium' and 'Palladium
Magic' Celebrating 100 years of Magic at the London Palladium,
Paul has also produced hundreds of charity fundraising events
at major venues and will talk about how charity events can
be a lucrative market for entertainers.
At
the beginning of this article I mentioned that our aim was
to make the Innovention a unique and valuable opportunity
for working performers. So, to make this event the best
experience possible for those attending, we are limiting
the number of registrations to just 100 people. Already
from word of mouth alone, we have thirty registrations,
so there are now only seventy places left, and we expect
these to fill up very quickly. We will not be extending
these numbers, because they work perfectly for the venue
that we have chosen. If you want to be a part of this very
special event, send an email soon to info@Innoventionliverpool.com
for details on how to register.
