Magicians with doves and other bird lovers. Last night taught
me a horrific and important lesson. I boiled a pot of water
in a non-stick pan. I forgot about it, the water boiled
away and some of the non-stick coating cooked off. Naively
I thought nothing of it. I threw out the pot and went about
my business. 30 or so minutes later I noticed one of my
doves having a real hard time breathing. I took it out and
tried to assist it. It stopped breathing and lost consciousness.
Remembering my cpr training from boy scouts I checked her
airway. It was clear. I gave her mouth to mouth. After around
five minutes I heard another bird having troubles. Then
another, then another, then another. Within around an hour
a full pandemic ravaged my cage. I've had doves my entire
adult life. Almost 20 years. I've never seen anything like
this. Yesterday I had 13 healthy, vibrant and active doves.
Today, I have 3. They died so fast. Faster than the driving
time to the 24 hour vet clinic. After a little research
this is what I discovered:
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=15+1829&aid=2874
The signs of PTFE toxicosis are non-specific, and could
be seen in a variety of respiratory and other diseases.
Birds are usually found dead in the cage or gasping for
air and eventually dying. Mild exposures may result in difficulty
breathing, wheezing, incoordination, weakness, depression,
anxious behavior, or seizures.
The website goes on to describe the horrific events that
occur in the birds body over the short period of time. Moral
of the story. THROW OUT ALL NON-STICK POTS AND PANS. We
cook and eat that stuff. All it takes is one forgotten pot
and everything dies.

4. Dan Sperry Will Perform At FISM
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
Summarized from Wikipedia: Dan Sperry is a well-known American
magician, living and working in New York City. Described
as Copperfield meets Marilyn Manson, Sperry defines himself
as an anti-conjuror, a magician who goes against the common
trend in magic today. Our Youth love him.
He
began his career performing at parties, including a private
party for Johnny Depp's children, as well as at universities
and festivals. At the age of 17 he was one of the youngest
illusionists to headline at the Magic Castle, and has had
multiple appearances on the TV series Masters of Illusion.
Sperry was also the youngest illusionist featured in The
World's Greatest Magic Show in Las Vegas and is the only
illusionist to ever be awarded the title of most original
magician on FOX's World Magic Awards.
After
spending several years touring throughout Canada, the US,
Greece, Italy and numerous other countries, Sperry appeared
on season 5 of NBC's America's Got Talent in early 2010.
He received more than a million views on YouTube.
In
October 2010 Sperry headlined at Fright Dome, a Las Vegas
Halloween attraction, and returned to Fright Dome in 2011
to host the grand opening weekend with special performances.
Among
his achievements are: awarded International Champion by
the World Magic Seminar 2002; Best Original Cabaret Magic
and Most Original Magician by the World Magic Awards; 3-time
winner of Award of Merit by the I.B.M. and finished 3rd
place in Das Supertalent in Germany.
Come
and see Dan at FISM in Rimini, Italy and watch how his act
has evolved. He's unforgettable.

5. Remarkable Magic #371 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Free
but not always so easy.
I
have been following several threads online that have been
discussing, in a quite heated manner, the pros and cons
of doing free shows. This has certainly been something that
has been debated ever since I can remember---without any
definitive results. I suspect that so many different conditions
are involved in the matter that there will never be a clear-cut
answer to the situation.
I
feel that there will always be a place for magicians to
decide they want to use their talents to benefit a good
cause, whether one on one, or in the form of a fund-raiser
for good charity causes. It is very satisfying to be able
to contribute a show and know that you have done some good
by your actions. Without wishing to be hokey, it can really
make the world a better place.
Where
the situation gets a little problematic is when you realize
that you have been taken advantage off. For instance is
everyone getting a salary except the performer, this is
often the case and it definitely rubs me the wrong way.
There does seem to be a culture of being dismissive in handling
a performer due to the fact that the service he renders
is primarily an artistic one. I don't like this one little
bit and feel no need to put up with it.
I
have been asked to perform at events when it has been quite
obvious to me that the inclusion of an entertainer was a
last minute "throwaway" idea, and I find this
less than flattering. It is usually also an indication that
your treatment if you perform will be just as casually handled.
If this is the case, at this point in my career I generally
point out that I choose my charity shows carefully and am
not in a position to help them. I wish them good luck, behave
pleasantly, but do NOT suggest other performers who might
be able to help them.
The
red flag that I find the most disturbing in these situations
is the tired old cliché they sometimes trot out that
you will be able to benefit from the exposure offered by
the event. This is almost never true. By making a statement
of this sort I feel the potential client is just trying
to influence you in a rather insulting fashion. Without
making a big deal about it, I just point out to them that
my goals in entertainment are a little more specific than
the nebulous promise of exposure. It has always been my
experience that free shows lead to more free shows.
There
are also occasions when a very little enquiry leads you
to realize that in performing a free show you may actually
be taking a paid show from the hands of a professional performer
who might actually need the show. I don't think this is
at all acceptable and it should never be encouraged or countenanced
by any ethical performer. I really didn't need to say though,
or did I?
It
is vital that we raise the communal standards of the magic
world in our handling of these tricky issues of pro bona
or barter performances. While every situation is different,
I am usually amazed at the amount of nerve displayed by
potential non-paying clients when dealing with magicians.
It really doesn't exist in anything like the same manner
in most other professions. No one asks a comedian to do
two hours of strolling magic at a charity event!
If
an established charity or a truly good cause asks you to
donate your services for an event then you have every right
to happily agree to do so. However, if you are abetting
a manner of dealing with the magic fraternity that in any
way belittles or diminishes them, you need to be careful
to show higher standards than the potential booker. Point
out that you should be treated as a professional even if
the organizers want to handle your booking as an amateur
event. This is just common sense.
Make
your decision based on the individual event and the way
it is presented to you, however don't look back and moan
about it later if you get it wrong. The key information
about these kind of events can usually be discerned when
you are initially being asked to perform, so make sure you
ask the right questions. Take the time to get it right.
I never like to hear magicians deriding other entertainers
who perform at charity events, however I do think those
events should really be legitimate charity events.
I
am very excited by the reaction from some very highly regarded
pros about my new Magnetic Swami Gimmicks. We are currently
selling two gimmicks with all the necessary extras for $25
dollars on special. If you have never had the opportunity
to handle or use a really good Swami gimmick it could be
one of the best (and least expensive!) investments you will
ever make. If you want to order this promotional deal then

This may be the shortest article I have ever written. But
in so doing, it may also be the most powerful as well.
I was asked recently, "What was the best advice you
could give to anyone to improve their magic and magic as
a whole."
My response was not typical of most but I will state it
clearly here.
"Being a professional does NOT start when the curtains
open nor END when the curtains close. You are a professional
always. If you are going to be in the art of magic you are
a professional. Period. As a professional you need to act
like one. That means treat people with respect and treat
our art with respect. Help each other out, be friends with
your compeers and help the beginner because we ALL have
been there before."

I hope this information has given you an idea of what can
be done with working the Scout market. If you would like
additional and detailed information on this topic, please
see my book/eBook at: http://kpmagicproducts.com/Blue_and_Gold.html
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

7. Anthony Darkstone - In Conversation With Jeff McBride
- Part 2
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone USA/Europe
AD:
I love New York. You and I have many mutual good magical
friends there. Speaking of Deans, one in particular springs
to mind and that is our "Uncle" George Schindler
- The Dean of The Society of American Magicians
and,
of course his lady, "Aunt" Nina. I was their house-guest
a few years ago but you spent a longer time with them...share
some of that with us
JMcB:
Of course; however, there are so many wonderful stories
& memories and I would need vast amounts of time to
share everything, and even then have to leave a lot out
but for now, I must state that both Nina & George
were very helpful to me in so many ways to me as I was coming
into the business. You are right in saying that they should
be regarded as a favourite Uncle & Aunt. George was
a great mentor to me as was Nina. They are very special
people. Their influence on me in my formative years, and
indeed even today, is exceptional. I didn't just learn magic
effects and method but how to be an entertainer!
AD:
Absolutely! It is a conversation that George & I have
had on many an occasion. I guess you know he describes himself
as an entertainer and not as a magician
even his
passport states that!
JMcB:
Yes Tony. Magic is not just about technique and skill, it
is primarily about entertainment. It is one of the main
topics we focus on at the Magic and Mystery School. We always
ask the pertinent questions. Such as: -What do you want
you're magic to be? What do you want you're magic to convey?
What is your personal philosophy of magic? We don't provide
the standard questions or even answers
however, we
invite our students to explore in-depth answers.
We
don't "teach" in the traditional sense, but as
in the manner of the ancient mystery schools, we explore;
we educate; we encourage. It is a total immersion in the
process of complete magical evolution
A transformation.
A metamorphosis. We show a student how to reach within their
core essential being - we allow them the opportunity to
develop & grow beyond restricted thinking. We explore
the flaws in the conventional thinking of how magic should
be perceived. Our students always leave transformed.
Mat
Franco who recently won ´Americas Got Talent´
was a former student of the Magic and Mystery School. In
all the interviews that followed his win, he also gave credit
to his "learning curve" at the Magic and Mystery
School.
AD:
Yes indeed. Many magicians have been featured on the show,
but this is the first time a magician has won - here's an
extract from Mike Weatherford's article in the LAS VEGAS
REVIEW-JOURNAL quoting Mat Franco:- Franco said by telephone
from New York "Jeff McBride was the biggest magic influence
in my life growing up; it was just a complete obsession
ever since I saw him on 'The World's Greatest Magic 2' on
NBC back in '95. He's just a huge inspiration to me, big
time.
When
I asked if I could pursue magic full-time, Jeff's answer
was, 'You can absolutely do that.' And he gave me some insight
on how to do it. Without that moment, I'm not really sure
if I'd be doing what I'm doing today or not."
JMcB:
I am delighted for Mat, for our Art and glad to have played
a role in his success. He first came to us when he was 12
years old, he's now 25. He was one of our youngest students
ever.
His sleight-of-hand was so amazing we couldn't
believe he was that young. In 2010, he attended one of our
workshops and wanted to know if he could pursue magic professionally.
Recognizing his talent, we played a part in helping him
do just that. It was Mat's ability to make the sleight-of-hand
magic play really big and theatrical, and also to personalize
his magic and customize it to fit the judges and the venue
he was in; this is an important concept that we teach at
the School. It not just about tricks but about making the
right choice of effects, creating the right character and
making the overall act fit the venue.

11. 2015 I.B.M. Jacksonville Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Becki Wells (US)
Jacksonville,
Florida is THE destination for Magicians in July 2015. The
I.B.M. will he presenting the 87th Annual Convention on
July 15-18th. Looking for challenge? Why not enter our world
class competition. The I.B.M. contests have been accepted
as the benchmark for well-organized, quality, non-political
convention contests.
Over
the past 25 years, the I.B.M. contests have continued to
attract more contestants and the quality of the field has
steadily climbed. The I.B.M. Gold Medal Contest Show has
consistently been one of the high points of the convention.
The I.B.M. Gold Medal International Award of Excellence
in Stage Performance and the I.B.M. Gold Cups International
Award of Excellence in Close-Up Performance are two of the
most prestigious prizes in the magic world.
The
I.B.M. Gold Medal Stage Contest is a preliminary/finals
event. If you're selected to be one of the finalists in
the I.B.M. Gold Medal Stage Contest, you'll have the opportunity
to showcase your talents on the evening I.B.M. Gold Medal
show. The I.B.M. Gold Cups Close-Up Contest is also a preliminary/finals
event. The top Close-Up contestants will perform in the
finals before a larger, very appreciative audience. The
I.B.M. Gold Medal and I.B.M. Gold Cups awards have been
won by magic notables like Lance Burton, Howard Hale, James
Cielen, Jade, Greg Frewin, George Sateriel, Keiko Muto,
Arthur Trace, David Williamson, Johnny Ace Palmer, Joe Givan,
Giovanni Livera, Steve Bedwell, Oscar Munoz, and Chase Curtis.
These
two awards come with a $5,000 cash prize - however, they
are not given every year and are only given to the best.
YOU could be next! Along with the Gold Medal and Gold Cups
the I.B.M. will present awards for 1st and 2nd place in
both the youth and adult categories for Stage and Close-Up;
I.B.M. Stage People's Choice Award; I.B.M./Obie FFFF People's
Choice Award for Close-Up; and the Karrell Fox Comedy Award.
Like the Gold Medal and Gold Cups Awards, the Karrell Fox
Comedy Award is given at the discretion of the judges and
not presented every year.
So
help us heat things up in Jacksonville next July by entering
the stage or close-up contests. Who knows YOU could be the
next BIG winner. For more information, contact Oscar Munoz.

13. Jonathan Levit's New Color Changing Card Case
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jonathan Levit
The
product info, and trailer can be seen here:
http://www.jonathanlevit.com/c4.html
As
for a review, Steve Bryant just wrote this for his blog:
http://littleegyptmagic.com/magic.html
GIMMICKRY--
It's very rare that I will order a magic trick just to see
how the darn thing is accomplished, and it's even more rare
when I am happily rewarded. Such was the case with Jonathan
Levit's new Color Changing Card Case, or C4. Jonathan's
promo video fooled me badly, and the method is even more
intriguing.
This
card case is gimmicked to the hilt (eight special gadgets
make the initial change dead easy), and the technology keeps
on coming to enable you to end clean with a perfectly usable
and examinable deck of cards and case. You'll need your
own color changing deck routine (or you can learn Jonathan's
from his new download, ahead of the game), but you probably
already have one. Jonathan teaches C4 via DVD, and he is
admirably concise and complete.
If
you watch the performance (an extended segment from his
Castle act) before examining the gimmick, you will be fooled.
All the stuff comes lavishly packaged in a felt covered
hard case, hence no worries about the gizmo getting smushed.
$45. All in all, this is just plain keen. I ordered mine
directly from the source, at jonathanlevit.com.

14. The Sense Of Wonder By Robert E. Neale
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lawrence Hass
Theory
and Art of Magic Press is proud to announce the second of
its two new book releases: The Sense of Wonder by Robert
E. Neale.
The
Sense of Wonder is the second installment in Robert E. Neale's
eagerly anticipated Trilogy of Magic. In these pages, Bob
Neale sets out to expand our understanding of the human
capacity to wonder beyond common notions of it. As he uncovers
the widely different styles and subjects of wonder, he also
shows how magicians can apply these insights to create more
and better wonders for their audiences.
The
Sense of Wonder also includes thirty-one of Bob Neale's
latest, highly innovative magic routines, all but one of
which are previously unpublished. Each of these routines
comes with a fully developed script and is performed with
simple props that are easily purchased or constructed, such
as playing cards, paper and cardboard, bills and coins -
even a toy ball!
The
retail price of the 396 page paperback book is $29.99. It
is available from www.TheoryandArtofMagic.com. Magic retailers
should contact Murphy's Magic Supplies. A PDF version of
the book is $19.99 and is available only from www.TheoryandArtofMagic.com
