3. A Year With Martin Gardner
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine
"Martin Gardner's Corner" ran intermittently in
MAGIC Magazine from 1994 to 2004. In all, 84 installments
were published, each illustrated by Tom Jorgenson. Martin,
who passed away in 2010, would have turned 100 years old
on October 21, 2014. To celebrate, we're posting 52 of his
"Corners," one per week for the next year. Each
has been selected and annotated by Jason England. Visit
each week with Martin Gardner at M360, MAGIC Magazine's
subscribers-only digital platform.
Also now playing at M360: Caleb Wiles teaches a multi-climax
card trick in which the instructions are actually in the
deck of cards, and Nicholas Einhorn explains two effects
with a borrowed bill: a serial number divination and a signed
bill transposition.
And so much more!

4. The Magic Word Podcast #197 - Eric Henning And The Inaugural
Party
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Eric
Henning has gotten closer to more U.S. Presidents than most
any magician. On this week's part one podcast of my interview
with Eric on The Magic Word, he talks about a variety of
things that most of us will find interesting. Like his performance
at the Inaugural Party for the President, a discussion of
how he gave speeches against the propaganda that Fidel Castro
was giving, Jasper Maskelyne and the "War Wizard",
performance opportunities drying up around the Washington
D.C. area, and more.
You
can see photos of Eric and hear part one of our two part
chat this week on The Magic Word at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/henning-magic-1
You can also download and listen through iTunes if you prefer.
However you choose to listen, I thank you. And you can help
spread "The Word" by "Liking" us on
Facebook at http://Facebook.com/TheMagicWordPodcast and
start a discussion on who you would like to hear on the
podcast.

Conventions
both conventional and unconventional.
I
had a wonderful visit last week to Cumberland Falls in Kentucky
where I was the featured entertainer at the "Uncon
Convention." If you didn't know about it then let me
explain that Uncon stands for unconventional. An unconventional
convention---they had me hooked the moment I heard the title.
My kind of event!
This
was a beautifully executed little convention that was filled
with a delightfully friendly group of magicians. It was
a pleasure to perform/lecture at a convention that was small
enough that I got to talk and mix with every single person
attending. That doesn't happen nearly often enough in this
day and age.
Part
of the "Unconventional" element to the convention
was that a huge degree of spontaneity was central to the
event. Other than a general outline of what was going to
happen there were many areas where things were just allowed
to happen. It was a refreshing and highly effective way
to run the convention. I wouldn't want to try it with a
large group but with this sized convention (probably 85
attendees) it was a lot of fun. We all had a total blast.
This
was my most recent convention and during the course of it
I spent a little time reflecting on my first magic convention.
I'm sure all of us have a special place in their heart for
that very first convention which we attended. It was almost
always an amazing experience when you realized you had the
opportunity to talk/watch/think/breathe magic 24 hours a
day with a bunch of like-minded maniacs!
My
very first convention was in the delightful seaside town
of Southport in Northern England. I was particularly excited
to see how my mentor Ken Brooke participated in the event
since he was highly regarded as possibly the greatest pitchman
of magic in the UK. I wasn't disappointed and thoroughly
enjoyed watching him spend four full days working the crowd.
It was truly a sight to behold.
When
Ken set up his tables in the dealer's room at a convention
there were always two people who were deeply upset---the
dealers with the booths on either side of him! When Ken
worked a convention, he really worked it, and did so in
a loud, aggressive and 100% entertaining fashion. The moment
you walked into the room it was easy to spot where Ken was
located, you just looked for the biggest crowd in the room
and usually it was flanked by two totally empty booths.
Ken
put on a non-stop performance from the moment he took his
place in his booth until he left the room at the end of
the evening. He took a couple of breaks to partake of a
cup of tea and sandwich, but the rest of the time he was
selling magic at a rate that left many other dealers worried
whether he was leaving the attendees with any cash in their
pockets.
Ken
was not just a gifted magician but he was a born pitchman
who knew how to work a crowd into a wild frenzy--- often
in fairly outrageous ways. He would make a one-time offer,
"Four of you, give me five pounds for this package!
No I won't bloody tell you what it is, in fact I won't even
sell it to you now---not even for twenty quid!" People
would begin pushing money across the stand like punters
at a three-card game. They usually ended up buying enough
extra items to offset any potential initial bargain. As
a philanthropist Ken was a great businessman.
Often
Ken would refuse to sell someone an item and just tell the
potential customer that it wasn't the right trick for him
or her to buy. "You just aren't the magician to make
it work." He would say. In this manner he would ensure
that this particular magician would spend an entertaining
hour buying other items and trying to persuade Ken to sell
him the "forbidden" item. Meanwhile everyone else
crowded around the stand buying that mysterious trick just
because Ken would sell it to them.
I
wish I had Ken's savvy at manning my dealers table after
a lecture. If you see me at an upcoming convention stop
by and I will share dozens of other great Ken Brooke stories,
then again I might just refuse to sell you something! I
have never been backward at applying lessons I have learned.

class Contact me at nicklewin1@mac.com

6. The Cub Scout Market - #359 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
Why
go into performing for Blue and Gold Banquets and what is
really in it for you? This is what I would like to discuss
next as I am sure many have thought about this market but
are not really sure they want to take the leap without having
some background knowledge.
If
you are already performing for children, work a family-focused
show or if you are even a strolling magician, then Blue
and Gold banquets are a perfect extension of what you are
already doing.
Most cub packs are very much like a big extended family
for everyone involved. You showing up to perform is almost
like showing up at a large family reunion of sorts. This
is similar to doing a large birthday party where everyone
knows each other. There are some obvious differences but
the basic feel is of a family atmosphere.
If
this is the case, then Blue and Gold banquets are a perfect
market to get into where you can work them well with simply
modifying your current show a bit and having an understanding
of how to market to them.
With
banquets usually running the month of February and into
March, this can be a slow down time for birthday parties
and your other markets. Blue and Gold banquets are a great
way to gain more show bookings during this time.
Another
great advantage of doing these types of performances is
that it is a wonderful way to market yourself directly to
the right age for birthday parties and your other of shows
you offer. Most banquets are well attended with young families
coming out to support their sons. This is a perfect demographic
to be able to market yourself while at the banquet and get
people seeing you for possible shows they may be wanting
or needing in the future.
Another reason I enjoy this market is that I was a Scout
and went through the Scouting program myself. Even if you
have not, this is an excellent way of giving back to a great
organization that does wonderful things for young boys.
The
best part about this market is that you do not have to fear
jumping into it. Many folks think of blue and gold banquet
shows as being dropped into the middle of a pack of wild
dogs. This does not and is often not the case.
If you know how to create a great, fun and interactive show,
there is no reason at ALL why you cannot provide a great
and fun experience for the group. If you can perform for
children at a home, then you certainly have the skills to
be able to do Blue and Gold banquets.
You
also must understand that Cub Scouting is based upon learning
control and self-discipline. The Cubmaster and Den Leaders
will work with you to ensure proper conduct. The kids are
also used to techniques used by the leaders to settle down
and pay attention.
So
I hope you can see that if you enjoy performing for children
and families, that this is a great market that is wide open
for you to explore
.
There are packs all over the world and every year they are
wanting and needing entertainment solutions. YOU can be
that solution and earn extra income during a slow time of
the year.
***
I hope this information has given you an idea of what can
be done with working the Scout market. If you would like
additional and detailed information on this topic, please
see my book/ebook at: http://kpmagicproducts.com/Blue_and_Gold.html
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

7. Anthony Darkstone - In Conversation With Jeff McBride
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone USA/Europe
Introduction
Those
of you familiar with my series, both written & live,
will know that I usually have an established way of introducing
my Guests. Of necessity, this time I will deviate from my
norm. As you peruse, my reasons will become self-evident.
It
was an unusually cold night in Las Vegas. Christian Diamond,
Jason Andrews and I were at Amazing Jonathan's Halloween
Party a few years ago. Nick & Susan Lewin and many other
Las Vegas notables were also there. It was all that a show-biz
magical party should be: a haunted house designed by Steve
Daly, and stunning nubile ladies dancing and whirling fire.
I was even fed peeled shrimp by Penny Wiggins.
As
the festivities progressed, I found myself in joyous conversation
with Joanie Spina (Respect. R.I.P) about the performance
of magic. Totally unplanned, but like a finely written Hollywood
script, a striking character in splendid doublet and a leather
Venetian mask sauntered over and joined us. Joanie Spina
introduced us. It was the first time I met Jeff McBride.
Perfect timing and extremely apt; Joanie's introduction
was all that was needed to set the seal on the topic of
The Performance in Magic. Despite the fact that we have
several mutual friends, it was the first time I had met
him in person.
Jeff
had been unable to attend my lecture at Boomers a few nights
earlier but told me he had heard some very complimentary
remarks about my lecture. Much to my amazement, he told
me that he was intrigued by my Pythagoras Force and politely
asked me if I would share. I was, to say the least, immensely
flattered, and, if I am honest, also somewhat taken aback
and more than a fraction nervous. I am not by any means
a Cardician, let alone a Master Manipulator like Jeff McBride.
I confess, the prospect of a double- lift sends me running
in the opposite direction. I nervously made some feeble
excuse about not having a deck of cards, or a place to perform.
Jeff then reached into one of his myriad pouches, extracted
a deck and walked me over to the parking lot, and, on the
back of a flat-bed truck, I somewhat apprehensively showed
him my Force. His reaction and kind words left me speechless.
Fast-forward
to September 2013 when I was at Le Chateau Magique in Vegas
to lecture on a non-magic related topic. I was greatly honored
by the many eminent Vegas personalities that attended. Jeff
arrived well in advance and after a warm friendly hug reached
into one of his many pouches and said, "Abbi wanted
to be here but sends her apologies and asked me to give
you her CD." The signed CD to me by name, by both Abbi
& Jeff, is one of my prized possessions. It is entitled,
'Family of Fire'. Beg, borrow or "steal" a copy.
Actually, buy one: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/abigailspinnermcbride2
Is
this an unashamed plug? Absolutely. More on this later in
my future article on Abigail Spinner McBride. I am especially
fond of Tracks 3 and 11 as it features a good friend of
mine, Samina Oshun. It is playing in the background as I
write.
After
my lecture, he graciously invited me to lunch at his home
the next day; after lunch he gave me a wonderful guided
tour of his vast collection of objects d 'art and a library
that would have been the envy of Alexandria. We kept in
touch and recently, despite his busy international touring
schedule, I managed to spend some quality time with Jeff
and we sat down and conversed awhile.
AD:
Hello Jeff. Thank you for spending some time with us. Let's
dive straight in to your internationally known signature,
the "Mask Act." You've performed that world-wide,
live and on TV to the delight of both magicians and lay
people. Tell us a little about the background.
JMcB:
My pleasure. Great to be with you Tony. The "MaskAct"
as you referred to it, was something that didn't evolve
in the standard sense of the word. It was a combination
of many factors and I honed it over many years. The starting
point goes back to New York when I was 16 years old. Jerry
Mascucci , who was a friend of my father's, was putting
together a show for Asia with the legendary Salsa band,
the ´Fania All-Stars´; fortunately, he saw something
in me and booked me to travel with the show; that was a
pivotal point in my life , when the philosophy of magic
and the presentation of magic really came together. I was
totally enthralled by the Asian culture and philosophy.
The drama of "Kabuki" theatre stirred a dormant
spark in my inner being to the very core. It changed me
as a person. It changed me as a performer.
AD:
Jerry Mascucci wasn't a magician was he?
JMcB:
No, he wasn't but he was well-known within show-biz circles.
His life story, right up until his death in Argentina in
1997, reads like a Hollywood script. As you know, he created
the famous ´Fania All-Stars´ Band, a wonderful
fusion of Latin & Jazz music. It revolutionized "Salsa."
He was also the sole owner of Fania Records. He was an extraordinary
man and a great promoter. He even joined forces one time
with Don King and promoted a Muhammad Ali boxing event.
AD:
so that was a cool break for you?
JMcB:
Yes it was, Tony. And much more! Much, much, more! As you
and I share a passion for the esoteric, you will truly understand
that sometimes a path beckons and we have to either shrink
from it or step out of our comfort zones and begin a different
walk.
AD:
Absolutely Jeff. I agree wholeheartedly. Now this was when
you were still in New York? Almost everyone associates you
with Las Vegas as you epitomise the Las Vegas magic scene
over several decades. But New York is your home state and
city and where you began your interest in magic and eventually
made it your career
.
JMcB:
Yes, I was born and (for the most part) raised in New York
and
thank you Tony, I am honored to be thought of in this way
in connection with Las Vegas. I feel a genuine passion for
our art and while I make a living at it, I also share my
art in the form of lectures, at McBride's Magic and Mystery
School and in live appearances. I am proud to state that
the Dean of our school is none other than our mutual friend,
Eugene Burger. Apart from the physical school we also have
Mystery School Monday, our live internet TV show which airs
live every week at p.m. Pacific time in the USA.

10. FISM - The Four Horses Fountain Of Rimini
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
The
Fontana dei Quattro Cavalli, or The Four Horse Fountain,
in Rimini's Frederico Fellini Park, is a monument with a
history that is far more interesting than that of your average
fountain. Inaugurated on June 29, 1928 during the Fascist
period, the fountain was made by local artisan, Fillogenio
Fabbri. It's inauguration, complete with pomp and ceremony,
was attended by half of Rimini. At the time, the fountain
was considered the crowning glory of the seafront. However,
just six years later it was decided that the fountain was
undesirable in its original location, and was moved to the
Marecchia Park. Later the horses were separated from the
fountain and stored elsewhere.
In
1983, after a long battle fought by a private citizen, Umberto
Bartolani, and with the help of the artisan, Ugo Stentorie,
the fountain was relocated to it's original position at
his expense. Wandering around the shady walkways of the
Fellini Park, named after Rimini's most famous artist, Federico
Fellini (who will be described in a future blog) it's hard
to imagine a time when the fountain didn't sit there, and
back in their original location, the horses of the fountain
have become a Rimini landmark.
Come
to Rimini in July and judge for yourself. In which park
does the Four Horse Fountain belong?

11. Creating Theatrical Magic By Max Howard
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lawrence Hass
Theory
and Art of Magic Press is proud to announce one of its two
new fall book releases: Creating Theatrical Magic by Max
Howard.
Five
years in the making, Creating Theatrical Magic carries the
subtitle: "A Study of The War Wizard and the Actor
as Magician." As this title conveys, the book uncovers
the fundamental elements of theater, stagecraft, and acting
that transform common "tricks" into powerful,
emotional experiences of magic. It does this through a detailed
study of The War Wizard-the highly acclaimed historical
magic show that Max Howard and Diane Bray have been performing
for over thirty years.
Included
in this book-DVD package are:
-video
of the entire The War Wizard show, plus alternate videos
of the magic performed in it and instructional videos (over
2.5 hours of video content).
-the
script for the show, including extensive annotations about
its theatrical elements.
-explanations
of all the magic, including Max Howard's modern classic,
"The Wand and Bottle".
-running
commentary throughout that illuminates the work and process
of giving life to a fully-realized, theatrically powerful
magic show.
The
retail price of the 256 page hardcover book, with DVD, is
$49.99. It is available for immediate shipping from www.TheoryandArtofMagic.com.
