Message by Stan Allen - Editor MAGIC Magazine

NCIS: Los Angeles
Monday, October 27th, 10 p.m. E/P, CBS

Guest star Bill Malone appears in a straight acting role as an accountant in a covert government division who finds himself involved in something much bigger than expected. While he does no magic in the episode, it was his magic that got him this first acting job.

4. Attending FISM? - Rimini's 15 km Beach
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

I looked on the internet and found many things to do around Rimini. There's something for everyone, and it would be a shame to attend FISM without enjoying some of the things Rimini has to offer. In future Blogs I'll describe many of the things that may interest you.

Having the largest beach on the Adriatic Sea, Rimini is a favored Italian seaside holiday destination for Italians themselves, and is often referred to as the capital of Italian seaside tourism. The city offers an impressive 15 km (nine miles) of sandy beaches with top-rate bathing facilities though many of the hotels have private access for the scores of hotels facing the shore.

You might consider relaxing after your flight by visiting Rimini Terme, a thermal spa on the sea with treatment facilities, four heated salt water pools, and a wellness center. It's set in a park with fitness trail, beach, and playground. Hotel National also has spa facilities and therapeutic treatments.
The philosophy is that life on the beach goes on day and night. It begins at dawn when people go walking along the water's edge and finishes well into the night after dinner, barefoot on the sand. You are welcome to do anything on the beach. Yoga lessons, needlework courses, sandcastle competitions and piadina making have all been undertaken on that 15 km stretch. And of course, all kinds of sport are practiced there. During the day the beach establishments organize many kinds of events for adults and children. The emphasis is on enjoying the moment.

The best thing of all is that the sport activities (together with various facilities, warm showers, changing rooms, books and newspapers, games, entertainment, kindergarten) on the beach are all free. Everything is included in the daily price of the umbrella or the sun lounger if you require one.

5. We're In For Quite An Entertaining Experience At FISM

Rob Zabrecky (from Wikipedia)

Rob Zabreick (from Wikipedia) is an American songwriter, actor and magician. His career began in 1998 as the song-writer and bass player for the Los Angeles group, Possum Dixon. In 1993 the band, signed to Interscope Records released 3 albums.

During the mid-1990s he became interested in magic and has since become a performer and award-winning magician at the Magic Castle, and has performed throughout the United States and Japan. He is best known for his eccentric character in which he combines irreverent dark humour, mentalism and the artful use of elongated pauses.

In 2003 he formed the off-beat magic trio, The Unholy Three, by presenting a provocative Dada-esque combination of wizardry, mentalism and off-beat humour. The Dada movement mentioned above was born out of negative reaction to the horrors of World War 1. Dada rejected reason and logic, prizing nonsense, irrationality and intuition.

In 2011 and 2013 Zabrecky was voted Stage Magician of the Year by the Academy of Magical Arts. He was host of Who's Hoo, an on-line interview talk show for members of the Academy at the Magic Castle, which he co-created with his wife, Tommi Zabrecky. Since airing in 2008, Zabrecky interviewed over 85 Magic Castle luminaries and performing members.

He has also been featured magician at annual magic conventions and appeared on the cover of Genii magazine.

In 2011, MAGIC Magazine described him as, "A unique persona, highly reminiscent of Norman Bates, with a bit of Rod Sterling in the mix - a psycho from the Twilight Zone, doing magic. Whether performing the Diminishing Cards while spasmodically 'dancing' off-beat to the music, getting electrocuted, cutting paper into two-headed dolls, or introducing his 95-year-old grandfather - who turns out to be ashes in an urn - the results are both mystifying and amusing, fascinating and entertaining.

One cannot help but wonder, however, just how much of the strange fellow onstage is the real Rob and how much is acted by design. 'In the mid-2000s he began a career in acting and since landed roles in films, Jajor network television programs, and commercials. Zabrecky appeared in the 2012 film, After the Triumph of Your Birth, and in 2013 he starred in the horror film Decay, playing a middle-aged groundskeeper at a theme park with a terrible case of OCD. As a television actor he has appeared on CSI:NY. The mentalist, Brothers & Sisters, among others.

What a treat to see him live at FISM, and with luck, meet and talk with him.

Don't forget to book a hotel room soon through www.FISMItaly.com or www.Booking.com

6. Ray Goulet To Be Guest Of Honor

Message by George Schindler (US)

Ray Goulet To Be Guest Of Honor At Society Of American Magicians Convention In Philadelphia, July 1-4, 2015

Raymond Goulet, owner of The Magic Art Studio and Mini Museum of Magic in Watertown, Massachusetts, will be the Society of American Magicians 2015 Convention Guest of Honor.

When the annual Society of American Magicians Convention comes to Philadelphia, July 1-4 2015 at the Marriott Philadelphia Downtown, Ray Goulet will be its Guest of Honor. The convention expects to bring 700 Magicians and their families from around the world to Philadelphia for contests, workshops and meetings. Magicians will have opportunities to see and learn from the best in their industry.

Ray is an Honorary Member of the Society of American Magicians., and serves on their Magicians Hall of Fame Board of Directors, is Chairman of the Society of American Magicians Honorary Membership Committee, and is a member of the Milbourne Christopher Foundation Awards Committee.

For 40 years Ray Goulet and his wife Ann, toured a traveling show and performed in the country's finest theatres, the largest outdoor venues imaginable and on 22 trans-Atlantic voyages, including once for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. After retiring from performing, this Korean War Veteran opened his Magic Art Studio in 1976.

Tucked away in a storefront in Watertown, Massachusetts are some of magic's greatest treasures. There is a straitjacket worn by Harry Houdini and a costume worn by Bess. You will recognize the props of Cardini, The Great Blackstone and the Le Grande David shows. You will see the most complete collection of P&L props imaginable but the greatest treasure inside the "Mini Magic Museum" is its curator, Ray Goulet. He quickly added onto this retail magic depot with a small 50 seat theater and mini-museum, all dedicated to conjuring.

One can understand why this unique arrangement has created a warm and inspirational gathering place for magicians. Not only do New England magicians gravitate there, and bask in the friendly presence of Ray Goulet, but prominent professionals, advanced amateurs, and leading collectors seek it out.

7. The Magic Word Podcast #194 - Magic Theaters
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Comedians have comedy clubs, but there is no "circuit" that a magician can take that would have him performing in cities from coast to coast. But there are a few magic theaters dotting the country where a magician might work one or two nights. Some of these clubs offer the opportunity for visiting magicians to perform, but others feature just one act or performer.

In this week's podcast on The Magic Word, we talk with four owners/operators of magic theaters and find out how and why they decided to open their own theaters. Perhaps it might inspire you to either look for your own venue to open a magic theater or perhaps to contact them to see if you can work there while you are in the area.

You can see photos, watch a video, read the blog, get time stamps, download or subscribe to the MP3 feed, or listen online at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/theaters-of-magic You can also find this week's podcast in the iTunes store or, if you have already subscribed, it may be waiting on your smart phone.

8. Remarkable Magic #367 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Looking forward to seeing you in person, fellow magicians!

I am looking forward to some Magic events coming up later on this year and I wanted to give our readers a heads up in case you get a chance to come by and say hi. It is always a pleasure when I get to meet up with magicians in person who were previously just names.

I will be appearing on October 28th at the Mystery Lounge in Boston. The Mystery Lounge is one of my very favorite haunts in the world. Located in the Harvard Square area of Cambridge it is one of the countries longest running magic rooms. For over 19 years the talented group of Boston magicians who helm the Lounge have been presenting top-notch magic shows to sold-out audiences. You can get full details about this unique venue by visiting their website at http://www.mysterylounge.com

I will be performing with the incredible Mike Bent and, rumor has it, there may be a special appearance by the great Jon Stetson. Knowing how the Lounge works I am guessing there will be two more great acts rounding out the bill. If you have never visited the Mystery Lounge then make a point of stopping by if your travels leave you in the Boston area on any Tuesday night. If you are around on Tuesday the 28th I warmly invite you to come on by and join in the fun. The show begins at 8.00pm and tickets cost only $12. That's right TWELVE DOLLARS, what a deal!

On the 29th October I will be taking my lecture to the Boston area, for the Silent Mora-Ray Goulet IBM Ring #122. The lecture kicks off at 8.00pm and takes place at the First Church (Unitarian) in Watertown. The cost is a mere $5 for Ring members and $10 for IBM members. It is going to be a great lecture and I have some great surprises in store! For more information contact Debbie O'Carroll at http://www.debbie@debbieocarroll.com (978) 462-9954.

Looking ahead into November I am excited to say I will be the featured lecturer/performer at Ring 98's "Uncon" on November 7th and 8th in Cumberland Falls. Kentucky. What exactly is an "Uncon?" Well, I can say it all when I tell you that Uncon is an abbreviation of Unconventional. This is not your typical magic convention and it is considered by many to be one of the most enjoyable and informal meeting spots for magi. To get full details about the convention contact them at www.mail@ring198.com or check out their Facebook page Unconventional Convention-Ring198.

I am booking lectures throughout 2015 and hope to meet many more of my readers and magical pen pals! If you have a group that features magicians lecturing and would like to see one of my lectures or Master Classes then let your club's booker know it. They can contact me about dates and details at www.nicklewin1@mac.com and I will send them a lecture package.

Visit my online store at www.lewinenterprises.com
I have exactly 8 of my Lemon Aid effects still available for purchase before the price is raised and they become a custom item. Check out the video on my website---it has been getting raves from purchasers around the world.

It is an amazing thing to be a magician. To be a part of the magical arts and to be allowed to perform an art that has been around for decades and generations.

Too many times we do not stop long enough to realize just how lucky and fortunate we are to be a part of this. After all, we are a part of a legacy. We get to call ourselves "magicians" and that is not something to be taken lightly. By saying we are a magician, we join the many that have walked before us and have helped paved the way.

Magic is a wonderful thing no matter at what stage you are at or why you are in the field. Whether you are a beginner or a pro or a collector or a performer, you get to be a part of something truly special.

We should never forget this. We should never forget that what we do is a privilege and an honor.

Treat magic right and show it the respect it deserves. This means in what you perform, how you perform and how you treat your fellow magicians. It also refers to how you treat your audiences and the people you meet every day.

As magicians we are able to do something special. Think about this little fact. What else in the world has the ability to openly communicate and share an emotional response even if you do not speak the language of the other or know anything about their culture? We can go anywhere in the world and perform because magic really is a universal language. What an amazing thing.

Remember that magic does not have to be done only when you get paid for it. It does not have to be performed only on a stage or proper performance venue. You are a magician and that gives you the amazing ability to simply make someone feel good.

We have the power and ability to share and change emotions and emotional response in people. How amazing a feeling to make a child smile who is crying. How awesome it is to bring cheer to someone feeling down or having a bad day. What a blessing it is to be able to make a difference and empower someone through the usage of the art we love so much.

I never suggest forcing magic on anyone. However, having the ability to perform at any time to make a difference is a good thing.

If you are in line at a store and you see a kid crying or sad, ask the parent and then show the child a little something. Make the child smile and feel good not because you have to, because you know it is the right thing to do.

Each one of us has the ability to use magic for the power of good. To use our art we love to make a difference to someone else. You cannot imagine how much of a difference we all can make if we are simply willing to pay it forward.

I hope this information has given you an idea of what can be done with working the festival market. If you would like additional and detailed information on this topic, please see my book/eBook at: http://kpmagicproducts.com/Festival_Magic.html

There's magic afoot ... Bruce Glen, The Gentleman Magician will cause 'Supernatural Events' to take place at Eschol Park House, in celebration of the Festival of Fisher's Ghost, on Halloween - Friday 31 October.

Bruce Glen has written one of his signature storytelling magic shows for adults - entitled: 'Supernatural Events' - especially for the festival.

"What better setting for mystery and wonder than amid the stately elegance of Eschol Park House.

"Supernatural Events' will challenge you to unlock your imagination and explore why intelligent, rational people sometimes experience strange, other-worldly phenomena," Bruce Glen said.

Bruce's trademark performance style has become known as Bespoke Magic and has seen him invited to the Edinburgh Fringe and Adelaide Fringe festivals. He also performed sold-out shows at the Edinburgh International Magic Festival and at the famous London headquarters of The Magic Circle.

Bruce is a member of The Magic Circle - the most exclusive magic society in the world (with less than 1500 members worldwide).

Supernatural Events is a truly intriguing one-man show - with not a single top hat or rabbit involved! It features extraordinary magic - together with "tall tales and true" inspired by the charm and wonder of some of our greatest storytellers.

A legendary local con-man exposed; lost manuscripts from Wonderland; the hidden power of our minds revealed; Houdini's feats recreated; the impossible rendered possible… and will there be a visit from the spirit world?

17. Broken Wand - Larry Weeks
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)

(September 24, 1919 - October 13, 2014)

Lester Fulton Weeks, best known as Larry Weeks was born in Salem, Mass. and died at a VA hospital in New York at age 96. His family moved to the Bronx, in New York in 1929. When he was ten his father, Aaron, an importer who worked for the Scandinavian Embassy, taught Larry a few magic tricks. Larry performed at P.S. 46 and attended Bronx Boys High School and Brooklyn College.

Larry learned to juggle and earned the nickname "Speedsational" for his amazing balance and rapidly paced act. He developed an act called "Juggling For Fun" which toured in New York, Boston and Montreal. In the late 1930's Larry performed magic in New York City parks with Abe Hurwitz and his Peter Pan Magic Club.

In World War II, Larry found himself at Ft Monmouth where he was seen by Irving Berlin and transferred to Fort Upton in 1942. He became part of the "This Is The Army" detachment as part of the traveling show which raised funds for the war effort. The show appeared on Broadway and played in 21 countries. Corporal Weeks, the baton twirling juggler was now juggling knives forks, potato spuds and apples an act built around the K.P. duties of the "Kitchen Police." It should be noted that Weeks was the originator of apple juggling in which he took a bite of the apple at each turn until he was juggling only the core. In 1943 he repeated his role in the Warner Brothers film of the same name.

Once back in civilian life he both juggled and did magic, developing a children's show market. He also found a way to make seamless sponge balls and marketed them under the name of Spongecraft. He booked other performers and in September of 1966 came up with the idea of producing the first 'All Day Magic Convention" held at the hotel Lexington in New York City. For a $3.00 registration fee the attendees got a movie, close-up magic, a dealer demo, auction, raffle and a professional evening show. He drew 200 magicians and it was so successful that he scheduled another one three months later. He produced more than sixty during his lifetime.

Weeks was a friend to many of the famous magicians of our time including Cardini, Roy and Connye Benson, Frakson, Paul Rosini and in 1979 and 1980 produced two of the New York "Salute to Magic" shows featuring his friend Richiardi.

Larry Weeks was a collector of vaudeville props, books, juggling and magic props, escape tricks and films specializing in Charlie Chaplin, WC Fields and Houdini. Larry always attended the collectors meetings and was a regular attendee at Sid Radner's Houdini Séances. He was very proud and boasted that his final resting place was a plot at the Machpelah Cemetery a few hundred yards away from the Houdini family graves. He was interred there with a grave side Jewish service and the Society of American Magicians "Broken Wand" ceremony.

He was also a longtime member of the IBM.
