Highlights of the week was catching up with Ray Crowe (Australia) who is part of the ILLUSIONISTS 2.0 Show and Jan and David Goodsell (Utah, USA). The feedback we received from the attendees of David's lecture was very positive, especially his unique storytelling of the effects presented.

I am very proud to have been included with this important listing.

I opened the Gallerie -W in October 2012. Since then I have already presented eight different exhibitions about art and art combined with magic.

Till the end of September I show rare and beautiful magic books, starting from the early 18th Century.

The next exhibition is dedicated to "Playing Cards for Magicians".

I would like to invite all readers to contribute with all sorts of "magician's playing cards" and special trick cards.

E. g. fanning cards, personalized playing cards (names on the backs) etc.

Please offer, whatever you can spare. Naturally I will give credit if any of the material will be displayed.

Send me an email: abc@wittuswitt.de

4. The Magic Word Podcast - Charlie Randall
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Charlie Randall started H&R Magic Books with Richard Hatch a couple decades ago. Over the past few years, personal circumstances led to Richard moving from Houston and the two selling their business. But it is still in good hands with Marshall Paterson who carries on the tradition of selling magic books to the worldwide community with quality service. Charlie still publishes books and give advice to those who are seriously interested in having their ideas published. He also talks about videos, one trick books, and more.

All this is available this week on The Magic Word at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/charlie-randall where you can listen online or download an MP3 file and listen later. Of course you can download and listen to the podcast through the iTunes store. If you are subscribed to The Magic Word or have a podcatcher on your phone or tablet, then you have them automatically delivered to you fresh when they are posted.

On a related matter, there is also a new podcast this week on "Meals with Magicians" featuring lunch with Banachek at: http://www.spreaker.com/user/7673580/banachek-at-southwells-in-houston which is independent from the regular podcasts on The Magic Word, but nonetheless, a lot of fun. Turn it on as you eat your sandwich for lunch and you can feel like you are there in the restaurant with us.

Mentalists will be interested in a new website by Jim McKeague - "Documents Concerning Marie-Anne Lenormand: The True History of a Fortune-Teller." Old records, many translated from 19th century French originals, reveal how the famous prophetess predicted Napoleon's divorce two years in advance, and how the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh, Scotland, caught her out and exposed some of her audacious and illegal business methods.

Read these documents at

Remarkable Magic #361. "I'm sorry you are on a billing cycle…"

I was interested in a thread on a Facebook magic page yesterday and enjoyed adding some comments on it. Reflecting on it today and observing the direction the thread moved in, I decided it might make a rather interesting column that would contain some material that would be of some interest to our readers.

The original online question was from a performer who had appeared at a corporate event and more than 45 days later was still waiting to receive his paycheck. He wasn't sure how to proceed. He was booked through an agent and his contract stated payment would be made within 1 week of when HE (the agent) was paid. The agent said he would look into it, however he says that the client's policy is 45 days. Well I can see why the magician was, in his words "pissed" and I offered some thoughts based on my own experiences that I thought might be useful to him.

I am a great believer in a performer being paid on and before the actual event of his show, because any urgency over his paycheck slips away dramatically immediately after he has performed. The biggest single problem in this case is that the performer signed a contract with very vague specifications built into the heart of it. There are plenty of people (both clients, agents and venues) who are more than happy to hang on to our fairly modest paychecks and let them reside in their own bank accounts for an extra couple of months accumulating interest. However, I very strongly believe that in "one off" casual dates the performers salary should be on a "do the show and get the check" basis.

Like many other performers I believe in a 50% payment for your services as a retainer to reserve the date, and the remainder payable immediately prior to performance. This is a very reasonable way of doing business and almost always acceptable to buyers. If it isn't something your buyer wants to work with, you can certainly make exceptions should you choose to do so.

What it does do is establish the correct relationship between yourself and the person utilizing you services. It is certainly not an unreasonable request and will usually be accepted without any hesitation. One very positive benefit is that if a buyer cancels their date, thus depriving you of your booking, you have received a fair compensation for blocking of that particular date. Should the date be shifted to another night then you are quite free to apply their deposit towards the new booking.

Assuming you are a competent and professional performer do NOT fall into the trap of feeling that a buyer is doing you some huge favor in booking you. You must handle the business side of your bookings in a straightforward, friendly and firm manner. These are simple business transactions and establish the way you wish to be regarded and treated during the engagement. This is what contracts, or as I prefer to call them letters of agreement, are all about.

The purpose of your "contract" should cover the amount and manner of your salary and what services you are going to provide your buyer. You must also make very clear the where, what, when and who's of that particular engagement. One of the additional details that I personally like to have clearly established in the agreement is also how many people will be present at the show. Agents are rather fond of establishing a fee for a "small" show and it can be a little disconcerting to turn up at that gig and find 2000 people dining in a banquet room!

I was rather surprised at the online debate over this all too frequent problem over late payment for a date. Some of the responses were totally ignored the fact that the details of payment were clearly established in the contract! The time to cope with this kind of situation is in advance and not after the event. From my, not inconsiderable, experience it is almost always wasted effort, energy and cash to try and pursue any legal solution to a minor contractual dispute. It is wiser to write it off and make sure you learn from the situation. This is what led to my previously stated payment policy, which is one I have never had occasion to regret!

Other online voices suggested bringing the matter to the attention of the client and venue and voicing to them your personal problems with the agent. I think this is probably ineffective, definitely inappropriate and fairly likely to reflect just as badly on the performer as the agent, everyone else involved may love dealing with that same person who has "pissed you off". The agreement signed was between two parties and does not reflect the actions or intentions of any of the accessories to the contract. You don't want to lose a potential client or venue over problems with the agent you chose to do business with. Sometimes you have to loose a battle or two while going about the business of winning a war.

As a shout out to my Magic New Zealand readers I want to tell you about a wonderful new magic effect "Lemon Aid" that is currently available on my web site www.lewinenterprises.com I hope you will view the video and check it out! I have only 22 left for sale from the initial run and when they are gone "Lemon Aid" will only be available at a higher price as a special order.

7. Silence: My Two Worlds - #352 - By Kyle Peron

Message by Kyle Peron (US)

I post this out of the request of many of you to learn a little bit more about me, who I am and what I have gone through in my life as a magician and a person. You wanted to know more so I will post and share it here. I hope that this may inspire you to do great things.

Have you ever known "silence"? Have you ever truly experienced it? Have you ever lived it, felt it, breathed it and been IN it? Sure it can be quiet when you are in your home by yourself at night. But even then...even then there are noises, there are sounds, there is life.

I mean true silence. A silence where you hear nothing at all. No sounds of crickets, no sounds of electricity, no sounds of kids playing outside, no sounds of the street lights turning on or off.

Welcome to my world. As many of you know I am deaf. Now I am grateful that I am not 100% fully deaf. I do still have some hearing left and for that I am forever grateful. I wear digital hearing aids as I am one of the lucky few who can afford them.

But I live in 2 worlds. 2 very unique worlds and the cycle of these worlds happens every day and every night. I cannot sleep with the hearing aids in and so each night I start to take them out and as I do the world changes around me.

As each one is removed the world becomes more and more silent. Noises cease to exist, sounds I hear all day I no longer hear at all. Voices that are at least somewhat clear to me are muffled, dull and void of any coherence.

I enter a world of silence. I enter a world where my ears and brain are trying to adjust to the lack of what it had all day. In this world there may seem to be sadness but in reality there is beauty. There is something about it that although bothersome is quite amazing.

In this world I hear very little but I see SO much. My senses pick up where the others left off. My sight becomes acute, smells are more apparent and I'm aware of every little touch. Wind makes no sound but I feel it against my skin. A campfire is silent to me but the smell of the hot coals I sense for miles at times.

In this world of silence there is understanding. I sit on the deck and stare into the sky. A zillion stars come to life and dance before me. A light show unlike anything I have ever seen. A play performed just for me and one only I can truly appreciate.

I drift off to sleep with nothing to hear but so much to feel. I awake in the morning from the sun hitting my face. The alarm has no meaning to me anymore but the sun becomes my alarm. Nature becomes my clock.

I awake and step out of bed. I awake not once but I awake twice. When I place the hearing aids back in and turn them on I hear the beeps as it scans the room. And when it turns on I awaken yet again. The world opens up to me like a flood gate opening on a damn. The sounds RUSH in at me as if they had been locked up for days.

My mind, body and soul become enveloped in this OTHER world. This world that comes to life for me every single morning. From silence comes life again. Birds start to sing and their song is magnificent, footsteps are alive as they hurry about outside. This storm of sound and thought is deeper as it has feeling. It is alive it is NEW to me.

Every day and every night I experience these 2 worlds. This cycle of life played out every day like clockwork for me. Do I feel sad....no. Do I feel hate....no. Do I feel remorse.....no. Do I feel hurt....no.

What do I feel? I feel LUCKY. I feel incredibly blessed and grateful. I am one of the lucky few who gets to benefit. I am one of the lucky few who gets to experience these 2 worlds and I am so forever thankful for it.

I say this because there are so many that do not. So many that cannot. So many with lack and so many living in a single world of silence.

I am lucky. I get to experience these 2 worlds when others do not have that chance.

I am able to afford hearing aids. I am able to experience the JOY they bring to me. I am able to experience what a difference it makes in my life and well-being.

So many out there will never get to experience what I get to experience simply because they cannot afford it. There needs to be understanding. There needs to be respect. There needs to be a way in which to allow these folks to live the lucky life I live.

I share this with you with a hope that you might understand when you see someone who is deaf or hard-of-hearing. They are not dumb. They are not stupid. They are often misunderstood. They are amazing. They are bright and they are my friends.

It is my hope someday that there becomes awareness to deaf culture and awareness to the need for change. The need for the ability for kids and teens and adults to be able to afford something that can literally change their life.

Imagine that hope and knowing it is out there but out of your reach and out of your grasp. Let us help to make them obtain what I have. Let us help them to experience the 2 wonderful worlds I get to experience.

Thank you for HEARING me.

8. Contacting an Old Magician
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mike

I am doing research on an old act performed in the 50s by a couple named Jay Palmer and Doreen (Palmer and Doreen). They toured the world on the '50s and '60s with the Kettle Act, where any drink called for was poured from the tea kettle.

Till today, I found nothing about what happened to Jay`s kettle and what the actual prop was and worked.

I contacted several friend collectors but it seems to have vanished from the planet since no one has the kettle in the collection.

I would like to know if possible how to pass this somehow, or if you know someone that could have been around that time that might have seen or met Jay in person. Maybe know what the kettle was or the methods employed by Jay on the routine.

I was told that possibly, Marvin Roy and Roy Johnson knew Jay Palmer. They are both alive but I do not know how to contact them... the same with Paul Duke and Paul Potassy...

I would appreciate any help - email: <miguel_melo_@hotmail.com>

11. The Innovention and The Liverpool Festival Of Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone

14th -18th July 2015

The Innovention and Liverpool Festival of Magic will be the magic event of 2015. There are several big magic conventions taking place in 2015 with thousands of magicians attending, dozens of competitors and lectures galore, but none of them will be like the Innovention. The
Innovention is different from any other magic convention. We deliberately limit the number of attendees so that everyone is treated like a VIP, and everyone has a great seat for every show, lecture and workshop.

The Innovention is an intimate event where you will see the best shows, the best performers, the best lecturers and the most innovative sessions. There are a variety of excellent hotels all within a 5 minute walk of the superb Playhouse Theatre, where all the events take place.
Next week we will be announcing the first few performers' names, so watch this space. Liverpool is a fantastic city to visit with its own special magic, and we are planning some exciting surprises!

So don't wait, register now and take advantage of our very special Earlybird offer. For full details and to register go to info@innoventionliverpool.com

Wayne Alan-434-793-SHOW (7469)

Two new shows coming to
The Historic North Theatre this weekend

The Historic North Theatre will continue their monthly Comedy Night on Friday, September 12 at 8:00pm . The show features an opening act plus two top comics. It is held on the 2nd Friday of each month. The shows are held in the intimate Balcony Mini-Theatre which only holds 113 people.

The September 12 comedy show's headliner will be Quincy Carr. He is known for his clean comedy and is an entrepreneur, licensed barber and professional comedian/actor. Originally from Austin, TX, he loves the opportunity to help his audience escape from their everyday lives and listen to what goes on in his serious and silly world. Since 1999, he has worked with some of the top comics in the business - like Dane Cook and Kevin Hart just to name a few.

He has appeared on popular Discovery ID TV shows like 'Wicked Attraction', and 'Monsters & Mysteries in America' and is making his BIG screen debut in his new romantic comedy 'Employee of the Year' (Fall 2014). He's currently touring on the 'Clean & Quality Comedy Tour' and is wrapping up season 4 of his successful all clean adult comedy show a.k.a. 'Quality Comedy Series' (VA Beach Funny Bone). Keep an eye on your calendar and don't miss out as "The Funniest Man You Don't Really Know… Yet" performs near you!

Lisa Cafiero is the feature and her act is fueled by sarcasm and a boomerang wit and has been described as a "wise guy in a cheerleader's body." Her brazen style of comedy is driven by amusing rants, honest story-telling and clever takes on unspoken subjects. Matching undeniable charisma with girl next door allure, her playful crowd-work consistently keeps audiences in the palm of her hands.

Hitting the stage internationally, Lisa has entertained in Los Angeles at The World Famous Comedy Store, Pasadena Icehouse, NY Comedy Cellar, and in the UK. She produced and performed in an ongoing comedy tour "6 Chicks & a Chair" that showcased at the Hollywood Improv and landed a lead role as a comedian on the TV pilot, "Funny Business." In 2014, Lisa placed in the local preliminaries for "Comedy Central's UPNEXT Competition," created and starred in a sitcom pilot entitled "Make it a Double," and is currently showcasing her comedic talents writing for corporate clients nationwide.

On Saturday, September 13 at 8:00pm, also in the Balcony Mini-Theatre, World Champion Illusionist Wayne Alan, owner of the Historic North Theatre, will perform his "Concert of Sleight of Hand Show" featuring Close-Up Magic and Street Magic. This show of world class sleight of hand is a must to see and it will make you believe. Tickets for both shows are $15.00 and are general admission. Seats can be reserved by calling (434) 793-SHOW (7469) or ordered online at www.TheNorthTheatre.com

Under Mr. Alan's ownership the performing arts complex now includes the Main Theatre, Balcony Mini Theatre, Moon River Thai Bistro Restaurant & Bar, Art Gallery, Gift Shop and the Celebrity B&B which includes the Frank Sinatra Room, the Marilyn Monroe Room and the Nat King Cole Room. The theatre also books top celebrity touring concerts, Broadway musicals, other productions, festivals and special events. The goal is to provide top quality, wholesome and family friendly entertainment. Mr. Alan said, "We will strive to live up to the North's first advertisement in the 1947 newspaper: "Visit Danville's new and finest theatre for the best in entertainment."
