2. Broken Wand - Joanie Spina
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded by Mel Kientz (NZ)
We
will miss you, dear friend!
By
Lupe Nielsen on Facebook
We
are very, very sad today.
Joanie Spina was the choreographer for David Copperfield
for many years, and I was privileged to meet her almost
20 years ago. She was a neighbor of ours, and would dog
and house sit for us when we were out of town.
She was a popular gal. Every Thanksgiving, if she was in
town, she would host dinner for all those "single and
orphaned" magicians who didn't have a place to go.
Eventually, she moved to another part of town, and although
we didn't see her as often, she was close to our hearts.
She started working on her own as an illusionist, and later
became a consultant, director and choreographer for many
illusionists in the business.
Her fight with breast cancer, caused complications in her
lungs and liver. She was currently waiting for a lung transplant
when she passed away.
The last time I saw her was three months ago. I went to
her house to pick up some of her DVDs, and we had a great
visit.
She asked me... "How are you doing?" I told her
I was doing well, except that I had been losing my hair
to alopecia. She said: "I lost my hair when I was in
chemotherapy and I have lots of hats and bandannas I can
give you."
We went to her room, and she pulled out every single cap
and head covering she had. She gave me everything, except
her one beloved Boston Red Sox cap. Lol! Most of the bandannas
I was wearing at the time were Joanie's.
She was one true talented and generous soul. I am so lucky
to have known her and for her to touch my life. Our lives
are truly diminished by her passing. May God bless her,
and may she rest in peace. We will miss you, dear friend!

Artistic Director & Consultant, Theatrical Coach, Lecturer
From
joaniespina.com
As
principal performer, choreographer, and artistic consultant
to David Copperfield for eleven years, Joanie Spina redressed
the ancient art of magic with a flair the caliber of Broadway
and Hollywood productions.
Critics world-wide note that the results of her collaboration
with the world's most respected conjuror raised the stature
of magic to new heights. She choreographed ten of David's
annual CBS specials, as well as the record-breaking Broadway
show, "Dreams and Nightmares." and co-directed
many of the onstage sequences of David's live show.
--------------------------
Joanie Spina has worked at the very highest level of show
business for over 2 decades as a performer and an artistic
contributor. There are very few people who have had her
experience at such a top level."
-Paul Kieve Magic Consultant to 'Harry Potter'
--------------------------
As Associate Illusionist, Spina recently (February 2012)
helped to open Broadway's "GHOST The Musical",
assisting English Illusion Designer Paul Kieve.
Joanie teamed up with Mark Kalin, Jinger Leigh, and Jeff
Hobson to create the award-winning show "Carnival of
Wonders," She continues to collaborate with Mark and
Jinger Kalin on new projects, as well as "Carnival
of Wonders", which was remounted in June 2009 at Trump
Plaza in Atlantic City.
--------------------------
Joan Spina has been a valuable treasure to the entertainment
community for nearly 30 years. Joan always plays an important
collaborative role on every team she's a part of. Her insights
and sensibilities always raise the level of work on a show
to a higher level."
-Chris Giordano, VP of Concept Development & Creative
Producer, for Franco Dragone
--------------------------
One of Spina's clients is Franco Dragone, the original Artistic
Director of Cirque du Soleil. Dragone split from Cirque
to open his own company. Joanie researches music for his
shows and served as a Casting Director for "Kung Fu
Panda", and The Circus McGurkus . She also worked in
casting the new Dreamworks Touring Show, "How To Train
Your Dragon".
Joanie writes a monthly column aptly called "Directions"
in the highly esteemed Magic Magazine. She is frequent lecturer
and also conducts performance workshops.
--------------------------
When it comes to secrets, Joanie Spina is the secret weapon
behind some of the most successful magicians of our generation.
As a consultant and director, she makes ordinary magic extraordinary,
and turns good performances into great performances. It's
been my pleasure to work with her on a number of projects,
and to watch her amazing work behind the scenes. There's
no question about it, she's the magician that great magicians
depend upon.
- Jim Steinmeyer
--------------------------
Current and past clients who have used Joanie's artistic
consultation services include Tim Kole, Juliana Chen, Jason
Byrne, Marco Tempest, KL Management, Radio City Music Hall,
Connie Boyd. Joanie also directed Japan's Princess Tenko
in the Radio City Rockettes Easter Show.
As a performer and magician, Joanie also starred in her
own shows in Atlantic City and in the Bahamas, as well as
performing her act on tour in South America and Europe in
the late 90?s and early 2000s.
A concerned activist, Spina has made several documentary
films, "Born to Die" & "Doctor Death"
which have been exhibited at the Cinevegas Film Festival,
The New York International Independent Film Festival, The
Dam Short Film Festival, Artivist Film Festival, and several
others. Pictured in the photo is actor James Cromwell.
--------------------------
You are a theatrical coach. I say that because a good coach
holds up the mirror of success and points out what we do
well to build our confidence, and proves to us where we
have opportunities for improvement. You do both very well
.
-Fred Walker, Magician
--------------------------
"Audiences from Selma to Sicily have jumped to their
feet cheering for Spina's theatrical wizardry as she synchronizes
the art of storytelling with the power of music and physical
expression to catapult her creativity into the stratosphere
of unforgettable entertainment.

Joanie Spina
Excerpt
from Magic Magazine - July 2008
Written by Stan Allen
It's
a bit surprising that Joanie Spina has not been a dancer
all her life. In fact, she dropped out from age 11 to 26,
a result of "taking the wrong road." That road
took her from her hometown of Woburn (west of Boston) to
St. Thomas to Maui to Vegas and, eventually, back to Massachusetts.
She was tending bar and had gained 25 pounds. In an effort
to drop the weight, she enrolled in a ballet class and a
jazz class.
As she says, "It was like getting hit with a dart in
the forehead." Feeling a powerful connection at last,
she took classes all day long: dance, voice, acting. While
she was told that she was too old, she figured she could
at least gather knowledge and teach, if not perform. Over
the next two years, she danced in a few Boston companies
before moving to New York and ultimately answering an ad
to be a dancer in a show with "an international stage
and television star."
Joanie went on to work as a principal performer, choreographer,
and artistic co-director for David Copperfield over the
next eleven years. Her work included choreographing ten
of David's annual CBS specials and his Broadway show, Dreams
and Nightmares. She followed this up by building her own
act, which played in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and the Bahamas.
After retiring from performing in 2000, Joanie pursued directing
fulltime. Her list of clients is staggering: Kalin &
Jinger, Princess Tenko, Marco Tempest, Circo Tihany, Tim
Kole, Melinda, Jeff Hobson, Juliana Chen, The Spencers,
Dirk Arthur, and Lawrence & Priscilla. She lives in
Las Vegas but continues to travel the world, staging and
directing shows, as well as pursuing her latest passion,
filmmaking.

5. Some Of The Stories In The September Issue Of MAGIC Magazine
--------------------------------------------
By Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine
Tales
of the Fall
Here's a sampling of just some of the stories in the September
issue:
"Blake Vogt: Coming to Light" - People scoffed
when Blake said he wanted to design illusions for Las Vegas
magicians. Yet, a few years later, he was doing just that,
and he has now consulted for many of the biggest names in
magic, in addition to keeping up his own performing career.
"Mel Mellers: Mirthful Marvel" - Onstage, Mel
manages to remain charming while being cattily insulting
to his audience. Offstage, this British comic magician is
quietly thoughtful, carefully analyzing his material for
maximum impact.
"The Official Wizard of San Francisco" - A throwback
to the days of the traveling medicine-show pitchman, Dr.
H.P. Lovecraft was one of the premier street performers
in San Francisco forty years ago. His mixture of magic,
comedy, and hokum was influential in the world of vaudeville
presented to passersby.
"Latimer' Perception" - Jason Latimer's new show,
Perception: See Beyond the Illusion, is not an example of
magic versus science; it is proof that the wonder of one
leads to the discoveries of the other.
Plus there's "Update" stories on Magic Inc. celebrating
its fiftieth anniversary with their street being named after
Jay Marshall, Rokas Bernatonis setting a record for card-throwing,
Kevin & Caruso's return to Atlantic City, Adrien Brody
staring as Houdini in a new miniseries, and remembrances
of Basil Owen Smith and Alan "Ace" Greenberg.
Plus videos from Blake Vogt, Jason Latimer, and Rokas Bernatonis.
It's all in the September 2014 MAGIC Magazine experience
plus a lot more!
And you can purchase a digital copy for just $4.

8. Remarkable Magic #358 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Magic
of another kind in Las Vegas.
I
want to mention a new show that has just opened at the D
Hotel in Las Vegas. I think it will be of considerable interest
to performers visiting "Sin City." The new production
is called "Jamaican Me Laugh" and stars Patrick
Murray, one of the finest ventriloquists that I have had
the pleasure of working with. Patrick is the mega talented
sidekick of Matilda---"Jamaica's #1 Comedienne."
Every
now and then I take the opportunity to introduce my readers
to variety acts that I feel will be of particular interest
to our primarily magical subscribers. Patrick is a natural
in this department as his skills as a ventriloquist and
puppeteer deftly turn his show into a fascinating demonstration
of theatrical illusion. Watching the misdirection and illusion
involved in this show is truly a learning curve for most
magical acts and could prove an invaluable lesson in stagecraft.
I
always enjoy watching Patrick work because he seems so deeply
involved in the nuts and bolts of his craft and yet makes
it seem so effortless that he achieves a very special hyper
reality. Rarely if ever will you see a performer pay such
intense attention to his craft. In many ways Patrick is
a highly traditional ventriloquist and would not have looked
out of place stealing the bill on an old Ed Sullivan show
in the fifties. When you see Matilda communicating with
him, within seconds you dismiss any sense of the artificial
and are totally caught up in their relationship.
Of
course, it really helps that both Matilda and "Second
City" trained Patrick are both incredibly funny. While
many contemporary ventriloquists feel a need to bring out
a succession of different characters and milk them for some
obvious jokes, this is not the way Murray does business.
Matilda and Patrick interact like a well-honed comedy team
and their routine avoids many of the clichés that
so often pop up in a show like this. This really is character-based
comedy rather than merely novelty material and you will
likely find yourself laughing so hard that you may not fully
absorb his faultless technique.
"Jamaican
Me Laugh" can be seen seven days a week at the D Hotel
in downtown Las Vegas with a show time of 2.30 pm. If you
want more details about ticketing then check out their website
at http://tickets.thed.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=15&MV=8%2F19%2F2014&c
or go to Patrick and Matilda's Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/JaMakinmelaugh
The show began an indefinite run this week and I strongly
suspect it is there for the long haul. Catch the show early
and avoid paying the larger ticket price that is bound to
follow.
While
you are at the D Hotel catching Patrick's show at 2.30 I
strongly recommend that when it finishes you have a drink
at the bar and then go right back into that same showroom
and catch "Laughternoon Starring Adam London"
immediately afterwards at 4.00 PM, ticket info for Laughternoon
can be found on the Internet at http://tickets.thed.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=7
I
have long been a fan of Adam and his show just gets better
and better. This is a wonderful chance to catch two fine
entertainers in an intimate setting without paying an arm
and a leg for your tickets! Make sure you stop by and say
Hi to them after their shows, as you will have trouble finding
two much nicer guys.
Talking
about stopping by and saying "Hi." I will be appearing
at the Peller Theatre in the Magic Castle this weekend (August
22-23-24th) and if you are around stop by and introduce
yourself to me! I really enjoy getting to meet old friends
and making some new ones. I am working with Jon Stetson,
one of the finest entertainers in the magic community. We
have been dear friends for about 30 years and it is going
to be a blast getting to share a bill with him for nine
shows in this intimate venue.
If
you have never seen Stetson work then be prepared for a
joyous experience, he is as smart, funny and unique as any
performer I have ever seen. His take on mixing comedy and
mentalism is quite unique and audience reaction is never
less than overwhelming. Fasten your seat belts because a
Lewin/Stetson bill could prove to be a pretty wild ride
for a diminutive showroom!

9. Pay it Forward - #350 - By Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
This
passing week hit me and others hard. With the passing of
Robin Williams, it made me really stop and think a lot.
Maybe part of it was because he was an entertainer and I
could relate to that in many ways. His goal was our goal.
His desire to entertain was much like our own. I think we
could see a little of ourselves in what he strived to do.
Robin
stated years ago, "I left school and couldn't find
acting work, so I started going to clubs where you could
do stand-up. I've always improvised, and stand-up was this
great release. All of a sudden, it was me and the audience."
How
wonderful that is. He understood that it is ALL about the
audience. The audience is everything and he played so well
to them.
What
strikes me the most is the ability to touch the audience.
No matter what he did he made you laugh, smile, feel good,
feel sad and feel emotion. He let you escape from the world
for a little while and your troubles faded away.
Isn't
this what we as magicians should strive for? We can ultimately
effect the audiences we perform for. We have the ability
to change the way they see things. We can change the way
they feel things. We also have the power to make them forget
their troubles. THAT is real magic.
He
stated, "That (working on stage) was the only thing
that interested me, along with learning the craft and working,
and just being in productions with people."
Being
on a stage is an amazing feeling and learning the craft
and art we call magic should be an ongoing process and one
we encourage in ourselves and in others we know. We should
never stop learning the craft we love so much.
Put
yourself always in the shoes of the audience and make sure
you are performing for them and for the right reasons.
Robin
also stated, "no matter what people tell you, words
and ideas can change the world."
For
us as magicians, WE can change the world for a person who
sees and watches what we do. Our words and our actions can
make a difference in a very positive way.
Never
forget that moment when magic touched you. That moment in
time when the wonder of it all made you smile
..then
use that and pay it forward.
I
am happy to announce that my newest book, "Festival
Magic", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
; This 112pg book is filled with the most up to date information
on how anyone can work and succeed in the festival and fair
markets.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

12. 17th Annual Motor City Close-Up Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Luka (US)
Before
you know it, the Motor City Close-Up Convention will be
here. All events take place at the Best Western Woodhaven
Inn (http://www.bestwestern.com/woodhaveninn) located at
21700 West Road, Woodhaven, MI 48183. (Metro Detroit Area)
Phone (734) 676-8000 Call the hotel for room reservations
or hotel information. There is a special room rate of $73
plus tax per diem for the convention. To qualify, when you
make your reservations request the Motor City Magic rate.
With
the help of The Wunderground Magic Shop we made sure that
the line-up for this year's event would be awesome. We are
featuring Shoot Ogawa, Tony Cabral, David Gabbay, and Curtis
Kam. You will have an opportunity to interact with four
of today's top close-up performers in an intimate setting.
Being a small convention you will get the opportunity to
see close-up magic close up. You will see some terrific
magic in the three scheduled close-up shows plus a chance
to see a great deal of close-up magic being performed in
casual situations. You will also get a chance to meet the
performers and get to attend four great lectures.
We
have a lot of surprises planned for this year's event. This
is going to be a great opportunity to see a lot of good
magic. In addition to the formal shows, there will be informal
sessions going on. The new hotel is very session friendly.
Don't forget the party! Another opportunity to see more
magic.
It
is very easy to register for the convention. Simply click
this link or copy and paste: http://www.johnlukamagic.com/conventionsections/convention_register.html
and click on the "Add To Cart" button. Registration
is only $125.
Those
who have attended the convention in the past know that the
line-up of performers has always been outstanding. You can
view a list of past performers by going to: http://www.johnlukamagic.com/conventionsections/convention_archive.html.
I am very proud of that list. I am also very happy that
performers for this year's Motor City Close-Up Convention
number among the very best I have had.
The
dealers will include: Wunderground Magic, ABC Magic, Benz
Magic, Pattrick's Mats, Mercy Magic, Roy Kueppers Magic,
and Gordon Miller Magic.
Mark your calendars and plan on attending this year's event.
I look forward to seeing you there. -- John Luka
Three
Close-Up Shows, Four Lectures, Optional Workshops, Dealers,
Party, & a lot of good magic and fun.
