The highlight of the week was attending Fritz Alkemade's
lecture in Auckland which was fabulous. Fritz who is from
the Netherlands opened with his 20 minute Magic Castle close-up
routine then he explained it and also his theories on magic
and presentation. He is now off to present his lecture to
the Wellington and Christchurch magicians in New Zealand.

Message by Paul Stone
A
Tribute To Tihany at Orleans Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas
on September 14th 2014 at 8pm
Circus
legend Tihany (Franz Czeisler) celebrated his 98th Birthday
at the end of June.
On
Sunday September 14, I am producing 'A Tribute to Tihany'
in the Showroom of the Orleans Hotel & Casino, in Las
Vegas. Tihany has not enjoyed the best of health recently
and we are hoping that this Tribute Show will be a timely
boost for him.
We
are still finalising the line-up of performers who will
be appearing in the show, but so far definitely appearing
are: Master Magician Lance Burton, Wolfgang (on the German
Wheel), the hilarious act of The Great Tomsoni & Company,
Sensational quick change artists Sos & Victoria, and
Award winning illusionist Jan Rouven. We are also expecting
a number of show business celebrities to attend.
Franz
Czeisler is not only a true icon of the circus world, indeed
the name Tihany is synonymous with the greatest circuses
ever seen, but he is also a wonderful human being whose
generosity and kindness to his friends, as well as performers,
is unmatched. He has led a remarkable and unique life, and
this Tribute will be an opportunity for his many friends
from around the globe to show their affection and respect
for him.
We
really want to make this a memorable evening for a very
special gentleman, and so your support will be greatly appreciated.
Please spread the word to anyone who is known to Tihany.
We want to fill the Showroom to capacity. If you would like
to send a greeting to Tihany in the special souvenir program
we are producing, please email me at qualityevents@aol.com,
Thank you.

4. Can You Tell The Rip-Off From The Original?
--------------------------------------------
Message from Jeff McBride (US)
When
will this madness end?
America's
Got Talent-style shows all over the world seem to be supporting
the copying of original magic acts. Take look at this shocking
video from Turkey's Got Talent. When you watch this "side-by
side" video ask yourself, "Is this originality
or theft?"
Are
the Turkish magicians Kivanc and Burak copying the magic
from Las Vegas headliners Jeff McBride, Mac King, David
Copperfield and Penn & Teller? Did they copy? Watch
the video and YOU be the judge!
http://cdn.isonw.com/img/SMV.mp4
What
do you think: Is this kind of behavior killing our art?
Who is at fault? Is it the TV station? The performers? Some
say these guys are just puppets of the TV producers who
'have to' copy other artists to stay on the TV show. Others
say that they just don't know it is wrong to copy! How can
we help people like this learn that this is not OK? I feel
that clear communication might help prevent this sort of
behavior.
An
open letter to magic "copy acts" worldwide:
Dear
Copy Cat Acts,
As
a magic teacher, I wish to educate artists on how to protect
their original material. I also want other performers to
know that it is not ethical to copy other artists' work
without permission or agreements.
Young
artists can prevent these situations from happening if they
are well educated in the history of magic and well connected
to the magic community. Here are three nuggets of wisdom
for our students of the magical arts:
"Trust
yourself. Think for yourself. Act for yourself. Speak for
yourself. Be yourself. Imitation is suicide."
-
Marva Collins
"No man was ever great by imitation."
-Samuel Johnson
"It is better to fail in originality than to succeed
in imitation."
- Herman Melville
Please
look deep within yourself. Good things take time, energy
and patience to grow. If you nurture your creativity, you
will develop your own style and original work. If you cannot
create your own original work, you can ask for permission
before you decide to take other people's material, art,
or ideas and put them in your show. Often, other artists
will help you with your projects.
Personally,
I really enjoy helping young magicians make good choices
when it comes to performing on TV. A few simple emails or
a phone call to the originators would have prevented a situation
like this from happening. Let us all learn from this, and
grow in our understanding of each other and our magical
art.
Yours
in magical community,
Jeff
McBride, founder of The McBride Magic & Mystery School

5. Simon Lovell & Joanie Spina Health Update Podcast

Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star
In
case you missed it or if you would like to hear some of
what you may have missed, you can find a podcast from each
day of the IBM/SAM Combined Convention on The Magic Word
There are six days (including "Ground Zero") of
reports, chats and interviews online at http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com/
Just scroll through to find and listen to these podcasts,
photos, show notes, links, time stamps and more.
Upon
my return from St. Louis, I called Simon Lovell to speak
to him via telephone from his hospital room before he left
for England. Although the sound quality of the phone on
his end is poor, you can still hear the same old "Simey"
in some of his language and humor. Then the next day, I
visited Joanie Spina, who has recently relocated to Houston
while awaiting her lung and liver transplant. Here she talks
about and thanks the many people who have been so kind to
her over the year. Walter "Zaney" Blaney is in
on the conversation with me, too.
You
can go directly to that web page at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic//simon-and-joanie-july-2014-update
Here you can see a recent photo of Joanie, too. You can
of course download and listen to the podcast on iTunes or
through your favorite pod catcher. You can always keep up
on what's coming by "Liking" us on Facebook at

6. Remarkable Magic #354 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
The
View of a Road Warrior from the other side: by Susan Lewin
aka Mrs. Nick
Before Face Book we thought we were all alone. By "we"
I refer to the significant others of entertainers who crisscross
the globe on a daily basis. These brave road warriors are
on the front lines and face global catastrophes, political
unrest, war, tropical storms, earthquakes, airport strikes,
lost luggage, and a multitude of potential hazards.
After
we pull into the airport unloading zone, transfer the luggage
to the curb, blow a couple of air kisses and pleasantly
wave at each other, the adrenaline begins to ooze out of
my system as I drive towards the airport exit, often in
the wee hours of the morning or very late at night. I long
to drive through In 'n' Out Burger, or make a quick stop
at a convenience store for a bag of Cheetos, but strive
to make it to the market to purchase some nourishing snacks,
all the time watching my iPhone making sure that the ringer
is on full blast-waiting for "the call."
"The
call" can be anything from "I got through security
in five minutes," "Everything's going smoothly,"
to "My gate just changed," to "I am delayed
for an hour
two hours," "The airplane's toilet
is broken and sending maintenance to fix it," to "I
am going to miss my connection," "I think I left
the cord to my computer on the table will you check?"
"We are stuck on the tarmac," and "Damn it
I am not going to make it in time," to "I have
to spend the night," etcetera etcetera.
After
40 years I have heard it all and we have progressed from
pay phones, transatlantic ship to shore calls, phone cards,
smartphones and Skype. If you are the support team you learn
to be on hand 24/7 on travel day to field the calls of joy
(a seat upgrade to first class) and distress ("My bag
does not fit in the overhead on this newly designed plane.").
Prior
to travel day I access the flight information, but I have
learned never to check too far in advance because everything
changes day to day. Usually I begin about 48 hours prior
to departure and check the connections, seat assignments
and frequent flyer information. We have ascertained that
the client has booked the flight correctly to the correct
city, state or country, but mostly the issue is there is
not enough time between flights, never enough time to clear
customs with the upshot being there is too much time between
flights.
The
job, however, begins at home and is very specific. My road
warrior never unpacks his clothing and is ready to travel
at a moment's notice. He is responsible for packing his
suitcase, hence long ago we decided that monochromatic basic
black a la Johnny Cash was the way to go. My only job with
the clothing is to provide an adequate supply of black socks,
tee shirts and black running shoes, and to run a batch of
clothes through the washing machine prior to each gig.
The
working case is something that I never touch, nor do I fully
understand. It conveniently rolls on wheels with a collapsable
handle. I know that it contains at least three hours worth
of material. I am an expert at purchasing USA Todays (and
I keep a hidden stash just in case) and buy lemons in large
quantities. The computer bag is totally out of my element
and holds so much "stuff" that the mind boggles.
I have little idea of what any of it does, but I know that
the passport and printed travel information remain safely
inside along with wads of 20s from the ATM, and smaller
bills for tipping.
Usually,
it takes me about 24 hours to recover from travel day as
my nerves are shot from the anticipation of all the things
that might go wrong, but seldom do. This takes me right
through to the pick-up when my road warrior is overly optimistic
that his flight will arrive well before the scheduled time.
I have been known to circle the airport at least 25 orbits,
because by the time he hits the passenger loading and unloading
zone his adrenaline is finally giving out as he loads up
his baggage, eases into the passenger side of the car and
gives me a quick kiss.
We
have come 360 and I am now off my 24/7 monitoring duty on
Face Book and smartphone because the road warrior is home.
Three excited pups and a cat greet him at the door ("Daddy's
home!" we cry out in unison.), and slippers, flannel
lounge pants, and tee shirt are laid out as I prepare an
elegant meal of peanut butter with marmite on an Ezekiel
bread muffin, a shot of premium tequila, an ice pack and
Ibuprofen. In a few minutes I'll find my road warrior asleep
on the couch with our small, gray Chinese Crested pup on
top of him in a mirrored position.
My
job is now complete until the next gig, and we have a little
time together to enjoy some domestic bliss.

7. Conventions - #345 - By Kyle Peron

I am sure many of you have attended magic conventions locally
or further away from your home. But what is it that makes
you attend? What is the one thing you gain the most from
it?
Many
would say it is the amazing talent of performers you get
the chance to see live. Watching them as they inspire you
and your own creativity. They empower you to take action
on your own show and what you are trying to create.
Some
say it is the lectures that teach you amazing new effects,
tips, tricks and techniques. These lectures fuel your desire
to educate yourself and to grow in the art we love.
Yet
others may say it is the dealers and the chance to see the
newest products up front and personal. Getting the chance
to buy the newest effect for your show or to improve upon
something you have been working on.
However,
to me it is the simple chance to be around my compeers in
magic. It is the chance to hang out with old friends and
to meet new ones.
Every
convention I attend, it never fails that I end up leaving
knowing new people. These folks become my friends and for
that I am always grateful.
There
is simply nothing better than sharing the art of magic with
others who share your same passion and desire. Being able
to sit and share stories or to session is an amazing and
rewarding experience.
The
art of magic can only thrive if we have the desire to come
together. We should all have the drive to meet new folks
and to share in what we know. By doing so we grow ourselves
and the others around us.
Do
not avoid people at conventions. Instead, go up to someone
and engage with them. Introduce yourself and get to know
them. Share your magic and allow them to share theirs.
Your
experience can help others that may thrive on it. Likewise,
their experience may help you on your own personal journey
in our art. This sharing of knowledge is a total win-win
situation if we allow it to happen.
Grow yourself. Grow others, and most of all, grow the art
that we love.
I am happy to announce that my newest book, "Festival
Magic", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
This 112pg book is filled with the most up to date information
on how anyone can work and succeed in the festival and fair
markets.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

Innovention is totally unique. Ask anyone who came to Las
Vegas in 2010 and 2012 and they'll tell you why this convention
is unlike any other magic convention. The reason could be
that we carefully limit the number of attendees so that
everyone has a great seat for every lecture, workshop, and
show. It could be that it is such an intimate event and
everyone is treated like a VIP! It could be that the line-up
of talent is always outstanding. Just some of the star names
who have appeared at the Innovention include Teller, Siegfried
& Roy, Lance Burton, Mac King, Jeff Hobson, Johnny Thompson,
and the Amazing Johnathan. It could also be that the professional
production values are unrivaled.
Liverpool
is a friendly and vibrant city, and July is the perfect
time to visit. It is one of the UK's best kept secrets,
with its superb Albert Dock overlooking the River Mersey,
the exciting Liverpool ONE Centre with great shops, bars
and restaurants, and of course Liverpool is the home of
the Beatles, and the world famous Cavern Club on Mathew
Street.
The
venue for Innovention 2015 is the beautiful Playhouse Theatre
right in the heart of Liverpool's City Centre where there
are several excellent hotels in every price range, all within
easy walking distance, so there's no need for any transport,
expensive taxis, or lining up for buses, as everything is
right there.
If
you are planning a trip to FISM in Italy (6th - 11th July)
then you should come to Liverpool too. It's all happening
the following week
(14th - 16th July). If FISM is not in your plans then you
should definitely come to Liverpool for Innovention 2015.
Registration
for Innovention 2015 is £195, but if you book and
pay in full by 31st August 2014, then you will qualify for
our special early discount booking offer and pay just £155.
An incredible 20% saving!
For
full details and to register, send your name and contact
information by email to info@innoventionliverpool.com
If
you are only going to one magic convention in 2015, make
it Innovention 2015 in Liverpool. It will be an unmissable
experience!

12. Show Review Fritz Alkemade
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jonathan Watkin
Richard
and Margaret Webster gave their friends yet another amazing
magical evening this week. Fritz Alkemade, a young and extremely
talented magician from the Netherlands, entertained us with
a fast-paced, hilarious, sixty-minute show with a stunning
climax.
His
show included old favourites, such as the cups and balls
and the Professor's Nightmare, as well as new effects, all
done with his unique slant. Fritz's jokes, facial expressions,
enthusiasm, and interaction with the audience were delightful,
and the climax was the funniest version of the Storybook
Deck I've ever seen.
I
might be predisposed to Fritz as I love his DVD, but my
wife, who is not usually keen on magic, told me on the way
home that she'd love to see his show again. I've loved all
of Richard and Margaret's magic evenings, and this one was
superb.

13. Raymond Goulet Is In Hospital
--------------------------------------------
Message by General Grant
We
have more information on Ray's condition. He was originally
scheduled to go to rehab a few days ago, but there were
some serious rhythm problems with his heart, most likely
a side effect of the heart attacks. It has been a rough
couple of days, but it sounds like they have that under
control for the time being.
As
I wrote before, he will need a different device to control
the rhythm. Before they do that, they need to wait for the
"blockage" in his kidneys to clear since this
is impairing their function. He will remain in intensive
care until they are sure that the kidney function and heart
rhythm are no longer potential threats. It is unknown how
long this will be.
Ann has been between the hospital and home, catching sleep
when she can. (Her sisters have been a tremendous help.)
Ann did say that he does seem more aware of what is going
on (I think he is heavily sedated), even telling her not
to forget to pay the bills. She felt this was a good sign
since he really hadn't interacted much before this time.
For now it is just sit and wait for the blockages to clear.
If they move him out of the ICU, Ann will let us know. Hopefully
everything will remain stable for Ray over the next few
days. The remaining procedure is fairly quick and he should
be able to leave the hospital shortly after that. I'll let
you know if there are any more developments.

18. Street Named For Jay Marshal
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by George Schindler (US)

Life & Style ~
Honorary Street is latest trick up late Chicago magic man's
sleeve
by Mary Schmich
A
few noteworthy facts about Jay Marshall, whose name is about
to go on an honorary Chicago street sign:
He appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" 14 times.
His sidekick was a belching glove puppet named Lefty.
He
was featured in a 1940s Broadway musical that required him
nightly to saw the actress Nanette Fabray in half.
When
he died, he owned hundreds of thousands of books.
"And you couldn't tell him a joke he hadn't heard,"
Jack Clements said Tuesday, sitting in Magic Inc., the shop
that Marshall started half a century ago, back when ventriloquists
and glove puppets were still blockbuster entertainment.
It was noon and the store had just opened.
Clements,
83, who describes himself as a comic and magician, had grabbed
his cane and walked from home, up Carmen Avenue, to park
himself on the stool he occupies almost every day just because
he likes to watch the comings and goings.
Sandy
Marshall (above), 68, Jay's son and the store's owner, had
flown in from New York to oversee Thursday's street-naming
and related festivities.
When
I arrived, the two were trading quips in a space that looks
exactly like a magic shop should.
Cluttering the tiny front room were a juggling section,
a joke section and such vital appliances of the trade as
magic wands, card decks and rabbit-sprouting top hats.
My
eye landed on the French arm chopper.
How
does a French arm chopper work?
"Right
every time, we hope," Marshall said.
No,
really.
"The
secret is told," he said, "when the item is sold."
In
the early 1960s, Sandy Marshall's father and stepmother
opened Magic Inc. in an old bakery on Lincoln Avenue. The
family moved into the apartment overhead.
Eighteen
people worked there during the store's heyday, in the 1970s,
according to Marshall. Famous magicians from all over the
world visited, along with regular Chicagoans who wanted
a few tricks up their sleeves.
But
in 2005, the elder Marshall died - "Jay Marshall, 85,
the Dean of Magic," said the New York Times headline
- and under the new owners, the store looked as if it might
die too.
Determined
to save what his father built, Sandy Marshall and his wife
bought the store, restocked the shelves, lengthened the
hours and hired a new, young manager who had grown up in
Puerto Rico.
Abracadabra.
The business came back to life.
Honorary
Street is latest trick up late Chicago magic man's sleeve
With help from Harry Potter.
The
alley behind the shop is at a diagonal, just like the cobbled
Diagon Alley in the wizarding heart of Harry's fictional
London.
A
magic store on a diagonal alley? Talk about miraculous.
Clements
tells the story of Marshall's decision to get in on the
mania of a midnight Harry Potter signing:
"Sandy
asked me how many books I thought he should stock. I said
10 and to myself I figured the seven that didn't sell would
make nice Christmas gifts.
"He
said, 'I'm ordering a hundred.'
"Damn
it, I thought. They've all worked so hard to get Magic Inc.
running again only to have it fail because of Sandy's high-rolling
optimism."
Marshall
ordered 200. Sold them all. Magic Inc. was back.
"The
last Harry Potter books saved our chestnuts," Marshall
said.
Card
tricks, coin tricks and disappearing ink may seem sweetly
anachronistic in a YouTube age, but
Marshall insists that old-fashioned magic has more appeal
than ever.
It's
popular on TV, in books, on Broadway, in Vegas.
"There's
magic everywhere," he said. "And Chicago, I think,
is being reborn as a magic mecca."
As
he talked, Luis Carreon (below), the store's "head
demonstrator," was showing a card trick to a customer.
Carreon
moved to Chicago from Mexico at the age of 9. Unable to
speak English, he figured out he could connect with his
classmates via magic tricks.
As
he got better and older, he hung around Magic Inc., bringing
doughnuts, until he scored a job. He has since been on "Tengo
Talento, Mucho Talento," a Spanish-language version
of "America's Got Talent."
The customer Carreon was talking to was Jack Shannon. He
is 12. He, too, likes to do magic for his classmates.
I
asked why, and his answer spoke to a universal yearning.
"I
like to impress people."
In
this way, the strange delight that human beings take in
fooling and being fooled travels through Jay Marshall's
old magic shop to a new generation.
