2. The Comedy Writing Process
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star
There
is no doubt about it. Stephen Bargatze, Rick Merrill and
David Corsaro are funny men. And they know how to script
that humor so it works. This week on The Magic Word Podcast,
they chat about the process of writing comedy and how they
interact with one another to create funny bits, lines and
an over-arching theme. I spoke with them at this year's
Fechter's Finger Flicking Frolic after the final night show
which Stephen and Rick closed.
For
anyone interested in writing comedy, developing ideas, or
magic in general, this podcast should be a "must-hear"
episode. It is available at http://squarespace.com/scottwellsmagic/the-comedy-process
There you can access the blog, photos from the final night
show, plus, of course, the podcast.
You
can also download and listen to the MP3 file through the
website at http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com or get it through
iTunes. Subscribe today and join the "Friends of The
Magic Word". Thanks for listening.

Message by Philip Temple (US)
Just
a note to keep you informed about our friend Moi-yo Miller,
and how she's doing "down under" in Australia.
On
April 19th, friends and family held a birthday party for
Moi-yo to celebrate her 100 birthday!

One of the world's most beautiful women, Geelong's Moi-Yo
Miller was a star in the golden age of entertainment. As
Dante the Magician's leading lady she captured hearts from
Russia to Hollywood.

5. Genii Magazine for June
--------------------------------------------
From Richard Kaufman, Editor of Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine
The
digital version of the June issue of Genii is now live online
for computer users, and will be live later tonight or tomorrow
for those with tablets and smartphones.
Our
cover story is a unique perspective by Luis de Matos on
his involvement in the touring show The Illusionists 2.0,
which was shaken by the apparent suicide of one of The Hypnotist,
Dr. Scott Lewis. With half a dozen videos it's a great article.
David
Regal found a small gem of a show in San Francisco starring
Peter Morrison in a theater that seats only 45! Read all
about "The Marrakech Magic Man."
We
have full coverage of the annual Academy of Magical Arts
Awards show by Dustin Stinett and Kari Hendler, and then
Dustin interviews Erika Larsen, new President of the AMA.
In
addition to my Genii Speaks video and the many videos in
our cover story, Jim Steinmeyer pinch hits for Max Maven
and offers an audio column in which he'll Impuzzle you with
a trick you'll perform on yourself. Jon Racherbaumer also
teaches a nifty trick in his audio supplement to On the
Slant. We also have a video of a terrific "Copper Silver
Brass" routine from Japanese magician Jindai Nishikawa,
and Ian Kendall explains it in Magicana, along with a trick
by J,K. Hartman and Jon Racherbaumer brings you Tokyo Workshop
and an effect using silks and spongeballs by Kazu Katayama.
Eugene
Burger's new column is as always accompanied by a video,
as is Dani DaOrtiz's excellent effect "More Imaginary
Dice" in his DaOrtiz ala Carte! Jim Steinmeyer's Conjuring
returns with an excellent effect using spectators' business
cards; David Britland returns with a Cardopolis marginally
about Albert Einstein; Max Maven digs deep to bring us an
excellent mental effect; John Gaughan's Chamber of Secrets
has some weird thing about lamps.
A
great issue ends with reviews in Light from the Lamp by
Eric Mead, David Oliver, and Joe M. Turner.
Enjoy!
Coming:
Digital subscriptions to Genii (no paper copy), including
all issues back to 1936, for only $35.

7. The Gimmick MagiZette
--------------------------------------------
Message by Solyl Kundu (India)
Aldo
Colombini has been a great friend since "the Magigram
days". The expression in quotation marks was Aldo's
favorite. Whenever we talked about Edwin and his Magigram,
Aldo used to mention that period with those three words.
Anyway, Aldo was, from the very beginning of The Gimmick
MagiZette, India's Premier and Ace Magic related e-zine-until
his last days the mainspring of this project.
Therefore,
keeping everything in mind, we all in TGM plan to pay our
homage to this gentleman magician whose heart was as big
as his physique. Our forthcoming issues-number six, Volume
Three of TGM; we plan to dedicate in memory of Aldo Colombini.
However,
without the support of YOU; it is not possible for us to
make it a successful venture. Especially those of you, who
personally knew this great magic artiste, please do come
forward. We earnestly request you all, please send in your
view, your personal feelings, your comments, or whatever
you have to say about Great Aldo and want to add in the
Aldo issue of TGM. Please don't forget to include any photographs
of Aldo of any occasion that you have in your collection.
Magic fraternity along with TGM team will remain ever thankful
to you for your kind consideration.
Please
do remember that the deadline of submission is May 31st,
2014.
Thanks
in advance for your time and kind consideration in advance.
Salil
Kumar 'Solyl' Kundu solylkundu@gmail.com
P.S. In case you've not seen a copy of TGM, please ask me
without obligation.

8. Turn Down The Volume - #341 - By Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
One
of the effects we family entertainers seek is to have the
kids laughing, giggling and having a great time. We crave
it and we feed off of it. The more they react, the more
we react with them. The more fun they have, the more fun
we have performing for them.
This
is a natural "high" for us. As entertainers it
allows us to know that the show is being well received and
the job is being done. We have many methods to make this
happen and that varies from entertainer to entertainer.
However,
many folks talk about how to achieve this level of reaction
but not enough talk about turning down the volume. In other
words, we can have a tendency to get the kids laugh so hard
and cheering so loud that it is often difficult to get them
to settle down or be quiet for the next bit of business.
A
proper show is like a roller coaster. There will be the
highs (when you want kids laughing and screaming) and the
lows (where you want them to settle down and be quiet).
However, this should not just happen out of control. It
should be controlled like a conductor controls an orchestra.
We
as entertainers need to learn how to properly control the
volume and the reactions in our show without coming across
as being mean-spirited. There are ways in which to do this
so let me discuss but a few of them with you.
The
first thing I do during the early part of my show (after
the intro routine) is to do a verbal intro. This verbal
intro. Introduces who I am and why I am here today. But
more importantly, I set the ground rules for a good time.
Notice I said for a good time.
The
way you set rules and how you handle it is very important.
I do not like lecturing to the audience. They are there
to have fun and I am as well. So I can set the ground rules
under the premise of here is what we need to do to have
a great time and how I select my helpers during the show.
We
must be seated throughout the entire show (sit criss-cross-applesauce)
We must raise our hands when we want to help out
We must have big smiles on our faces. Let me see all the
awesome smiles
Now
notice I am not saying you must "shut up" (and
yes I have heard entertainers actually say this. I am not
saying anything mean. It is set in a way that this is how
we have fun and how we get to help. The key is when you
are smiling you cannot be talking. Works really great.
Now
I can turn down the volume during the show by simply bringing
up these rules when I need to. Hey have heard them and so
are used to them.
Another
method is the ability to start lowering your voice as you
talk. This is a psychological method. As you talk your arms
fall to a more relaxed state and the volume in your voice
gets softer gradually. You will be amazed at what happens
to the audience when you do this. They will follow suit
without even realizing it. Give it a try.
Another
method I would like to discuss is one in which you give
a logical reason for them to become quiet. You make it a
part of the routine and the fun. It becomes important to
them to be quiet with you because you are both going to
be doing something fun in the routine and they want to do
it with you.
For
example: I may be doing a "see don't see" principle
in the show where the kids see something and I do not. This
is a pure case of getting kids screaming and hollering and
laughing. Volume goes up. But I need that volume to go down
so what I do is I let them assist me from their seats.
In
other words I might say something like, "Wait. Wait
(lower
voice softly) are you telling me Sammy the snake is right
over there and I just can't see him? (Lower voice softer
still). OHHHH I know why. I am making so much noise that
with his super snake hearing he hears the noise and vanishes
before I get a chance to catch him. So I know what we will
do. SHHHHHHH let's all catch him in the act together. SHHHHHH
(whisper) Is he still there? Yeah? Cool I am going to look
on the count of 3."
Now
you can start to see how them being quiet is a part of the
routine. They WANT to be quiet because you are allowing
them n on the joke. You are including them in on the routine.
You will be amazed at how well this technique works to bring
the volume down fast and naturally.
There
are more methods, but I wanted to cover off on these for
this article. I do hope that this is of help to you and
that it has given you some food for thought. Give them a
try in your own shows and I am sure you will love the results.
I am happy to announce that my newest book, "FESTIVAL
MAGIC", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
This 112pg book is filled with the most up to date information
on how anyone can work and succeed in the festival and fair
markets.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
