Sad to report that IBM 160 Secretary Keith Garrett of New Zealand passed away at the young age of 54 from an aneurism. There was a wonderful celebration of Keith's life on January 22nd at the KG Magic Theatre that he had built as a school to teach magic to young up and coming magicians. Keith will really be missed.

2. Hofzinser Books In English
--------------------------------------------
Message by Magic Christian

Dear friends,

I would like to thank all who had ordered the first two volumes of my Hofzinser-Books in English and had sent in so wonderful mails to Stephen Minch, the editor in Seattle, to Bill Kalush, the producer in New York and to me in Vienna. Thank you for the nice words. I am very happy that the books were received so well. They seem to sell out quickly.

Thank you Ricky Jay for the comment: "Every page a new surprise and information". Hopefully the other two volumes about Hofzinser's Salon Magic will be translated soon.

Every mail encourages me again to dig more and more. I am still convinced that there is more information around about the father of modern card magic than we believe. In the last pages of volumes 3A+3B I listed a lot of questions which seem to be unsolved but I am sure to find an answer for many questions still. It is a matter of time. You cannot find them in the internet but in hidden places in so far unknown collections.

Best wishes for 2014
Magic Christian

3. A Magic Valentine
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine

In the last issue of MAGIC Magazine, I asked the question "Why History?" and then wrote about a few folks who have studied the past and been successful, mostly in the stage and illusion arena.

Now, in the new issue, we feature a hip and trendy close-up magician who is not only interested in what's new but, more importantly, what's old. Steve Valentine is spending a lot of time and energy looking back - to move forward.

In addition to Mr. Valentine (in February, no less), we look back at the life of the amazing Johnny Eck, the subject of an exhibition currently running in Baltimore. One of the most innovative routines in magic today has its roots in this story. Also this month, we take you behind the scenes on another magic series for television. This time, it's a show from Ireland, and it's being performed in the Irish language.

It's all in the February 2014 issue of MAGIC Magazine. Plus, a flashback to 25 years ago, when magic starred in the halftime show of Super Bowl XXIII ... and a lot more! Visit www.MAGICmagazine.com.

6. Remarkable Magic #335 - Nick Lewin

A moving story about a magician.

We just completed our third move in two years! It was Las Vegas to Los Angeles to Las Vegas to Austin and along the way we condensed down the contents from two large houses, four double garages and five separate storage lockers. It was a mammoth undertaking and I am happy to say that we are now delightfully settled in our modestly sized, but beautiful new home.

What amazed me as this took place was the incredible amount of magic that I have accumulated over the years; box after box, trunk after trunk and case after case. Thank God I got rid of my illusion show a few years ago or the nightmare might still be going on; I just kept a couple of my favorite illusions pretty much for sentimental reasons.

What really gave me pause for thought was why I had this many magic props and tricks in my possession in the first place. I go out to earn my living with a pilot's case that contains 37 tricks-enough for three 50-minute shows. I think I had it all pretty much figured out after that third move. I suspect it is the same for 95% of magicians, this business turns us into accumulators, packrats and hoarders of the most extreme kind.

Even the humblest, and least used, of my replaceable items has got more back-ups than I would need if I performed until I was two hundred years old. Let me give you an example, maybe twenty times a year I perform my Coin In Bottle/Vanishing Bottle routine. It is a great trick and used at the correct time and location is truly a killer piece of magic. It takes up no space in my working case and gets a huge reaction. So far so good……

'The other side of the folding coin' is when I look at the enormous amount of storage this trick takes up outside of my working case! I must have found 30 or 40 folding coins of various denominations and nationalities, including folding 'half-crowns' which haven't been in circulation since the sixties. There was also a large box filled with slivers of folding coin segments, and rubber bands that are so old they dissolve if you speak harshly to them.

This routine (available on my 'Yellow Lecture Notes for $30 at my online store-moving is expensive so I will put in a fast promotional plug!) also uses a brown sandwich sack. I found 12 packages of 200 bags among my magic supplies. There were also about 150 glass Coca Cola bottles and 10 Norm Nielsen rubber Coca Cola bottles. Yikes.

In fact they should just subtract a monthly percentage from my salary and send it directly to Norm and Lupe; I buy at least one rubber dove from them every year and have done so since he started manufacturing them. I have never, ever thrown one away-just in case! Some of the older doves have crumpled and distorted into such strange mutations of their original pristine and snowy white condition that they look like they have flown directly from Dr. Moreau's Island.

I still have the suitcase containing the kid's show I used to perform in the sixties at age 11. I opened the case and was genuinely alarmed at what I saw and the condition it was in. I kept it anyhow-hey I will probably have grandkids soon, of course the damage to their innocent little psyches if they saw the condition of my 'Run Rabbit Run' could emotionally stunt them for life. One unguarded look at my Egg Bag that changes into a chicken has stopped me from ingesting either eggs or chicken ever since. It was truly alarming.

I don't know what it is about magic props but I just can't part with them (actually the damn illusions were easy to dump-I never liked them much to begin with,) however the absurd emotional attachment I have over the scores of wallets I unearthed defies any kind of rational logic. The incomplete decks of cards I saved, because 'they might be needed for '6 Card Repeats' would stretch from Vegas to Austin-sideways!

Am I crazy or just your average magician? Does the I.B.M. sponsor a 12 step program to prevent us all from ending up with a living space as cluttered as McComb? I don't think so, but I don't know; what I do know is that I am never, ever going to move again. This process brought me face to face with the obsessive side of magic that I prefer to pretend does not exist!

That is my story and you are stuck with it! (Yes, I found a few Robert Orben books too.)

My blog is at www.remarkablemagic.com
My web site/online store is www.nicklewin.com
My garage is in S.W. Austin-bring a big box and come and help yourself!

7. Maintaining a Sense of Wonder - #326 - Kyle Peron

Many magicians lose the sense of wonder the more we learn. It comes with learning our trade. The more tools we learn and add to our tool box, the more that wonderment is lost.

We are not fooled as easily because we know the secrets of our craft. On occasion an effect can still fool us and that wonderment comes back. But in most cases we do not get so much the chance to experience that wonderment we first had when magic was new to us all.

This is why it is so important to keep the secrets of magic and to make them sacred to us all. It is to allow magic to thrive in the hearts of laypeople. It is to allow them to experience the wonderment and excitement magic can create.

So how do we as magicians get back that sense of wonder? How do we get excited again the same way we did when magic was fresh to us?

I found out an important lesson recently while on vacation. I went to Orlando on vacation and visited Universal Studios and Sea World. It would appear that many may be wondering how any of this can affect the magic within us.

Well it certainly can. Magic is entertainment first. I am an entertainer who uses magic to entertain. If this is the case, I can regain that sense of wonder through watching and enjoying and learning from other entertainment venues.

There was so much I saw at these parks that just opened my eyes and allowed me to really feel like a kid again. The visual things I saw gave me ideas. The music I heard sparked creative thought.

The shows out on at these places were just amazing and although not magic in nature, were so well done that I could not help but to be entertained. The smile came back to my face and the sense of wonder was back.

I felt the same way I did when magic was new to me. When magic was fresh everything just made me feel good and made me excited.

Having the ability to see other art in various ways from bands to amusement park shows to rides to visual art etc., just is fuel for the imagination. It sparks creativity and brings back wonderment if we open our eyes enough to accept it.

I am coming back home with a new and fresh sense of wonder. I am coming home empowered and wanting to create again. It has fueled my passion and made me see that there is just so much out there that we can do and learn from.

There are times as magicians when we get into a rut and things seem stale to us. It becomes had to get excited and hard to create something new. In these times I say go and experience other art forms.

Go for a walk and experience nature. Take a trip to a museum and learn from the things shown there. Experience theater and movies and other shows that are not magic shows.

There is so much out there that we can experience that will fuel our sense of wonder again. It can and will add a spark in your mind and empower you. It will help you see things in a new way.

Don't allow yourself or your magic to stay dormant. Even if things never get added to your show, we should never stop learning. We should always be in a process of building and adding tools for our tool box. The more tools we have, the better craftsman we become.

I feel we owe it to ourselves and we certainly owe it to our audiences.

As always I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me at magic4u02@aol.com. I look forward to it.

10. Broken Wand Brian McCullagh
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Blackmore

Sadly I have to report that our old mate, Brian McCullagh, died on Sunday 19th in Queensland. His health had been progressively worse in recent years.

There are no words to express the impact Brian had on the Geniis Magical Society, or the revitalisation of the club that occurred as a result of his boundless energy and enthusiasm. The "Geniis Magic Journal" stands as a tribute to his love of magic, and the many friends he made here and overseas through his research and writing on magic history will miss his passion and dedication. Mostly, though, he was a good friend to us and we will not see a man of his calibre again.

Peter Rodgers and I will be travelling to Queensland for the service, which is expected to be during next week, and at Brian's request the Broken Wand ceremony will be conducted.

UK & magic lost a great character yesterday... Steve Evans aged just 52 lost his battle with cancer yesterday.

Steve was a giant of a man, lived in Wolverhampton.... Steve will now leave a gaping hole at our British Ring Convention, where he was a compere of the stage competition, and organiser of the close up comp.. as well as other numerous events.

Steve was funny, intelligent, friendly,.... and a great friend of our family.... and everyone else in the world of magic.

We are proud to have known him.
