Handcuffs and other props belonging to one of the world's most famous illusionists and escape artists, Harry Houdini, are among a selection of 260 lots of conjuring books, prints, memorabilia, decorative objects and apparatus in Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions Bibliophile sale on Thursday 12th December.

Known at the beginning of his career as "Harry Handcuff Houdini", the Hungarian-American escape artist prepared the pictured handcuffs specially to ensure a fool-proof escape. Houdini would normally use unprepared apparatus, so the rare pair was probably for use in his particularly risky Chinese Water Torture, or other underwater acts. They are accompanied by a typed letter from magician Billy McComb, detailing how he acquired them.

McComb explains how he found them amongst a large collection of rusty props purchased from the widow of Houdini's brother, Theo Hardeen. Better known as 'Dash' Houdini's brother was his stage partner before his wife, Wilhelmina Beatrice 'Bess' Rahner, replaced him in the 1890s. Whilst restoring the cuffs, McComb discovered they had been modified by Houdini. Such examples are rare survivors from the escape artist's acts. This pair and letter are together estimated at £2,000-3,000.

Other props used by Houdini include a pair of Lilly Leg Irons estimated at £2,000-3,000 and a round barrel screw key padlock, estimated at £1,000-1,500.

Both were left by Houdini to his friend, and one of the world's most talented mentalists, Joseph Dunninger. Previous owners include mentalist and escapologist Richard John Silmser; handcuff collector Joseph Tanner of Wheeler-Tanner and John Fisher, gold star member of the Inner Magic Circle. Included with the irons are signed letters by Silsmer and Tanner along with a photocopy of an autograph letter signed by the widow of Dunninger, providing identifying features and provenance.

Houdini's personal copy of Hudson Tuttle's Arcana of Spiritualism is among the rare magic-related books in the auction. With engraved portrait bookplate and a few pencil underlinings and markings, it is estimated at £250-350.

Houdini developed his stage name and was heavily influenced by his idol, the French magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. In his book Confidences et Revelations, Robert Houdin identifies Recueil des Planches du Dictonnair Encyclopédique des Amusemens des Sciences Mathématique et Physique by Jacques Lacombe as his inspiration to take up conjuring.

Made up of 86 engraved plates and divided into various sections, including physical, mechanical and optical amusements; fireworks; magic numbers, and conjuring, a rare example of Houdin's muse is estimated at £2,000-3,000.

Tricks and props from the collection of the actor and stage magician, John "Klox" Forrest, include several early pieces produced by Bland's and Hamley's. Forrest first worked as a child actor, appearing in the films Great Expectations in 1946 and Tom Brown's School days in 1951. He also had a lead role on stage in A Streetcar Named Desire opposite Vivien Leigh in 1949. As a child, while living in Cookham, Berkshire, he was taught conjuring by Horace the brother of Stanley Spencer, eventually turning to magic as a profession and appearing as a cabaret performer in Paris and Monte Carlo as John Klox.

Illusionist Ralph Chart's Artist's Palette [pictured left] was invented, and probably constructed by Chart, who performed under the name Raoul. It is not clear whether the stand was made for this or another illusion, but obviously formed part of Ralph Chart's act. With Raoul labels attached and in its original wooden travelling case it is estimated at £350-500.

Another highlight is a nineteenth century conjurer's table made from ebonised wood with carved and partly gilt detachable cabriole legs. The table has four traps, similar to those described by Professor Hoffmann in Modern Magic.

The auction will be held by Dreweatts and Bloomsbury Auctions at the Godalming saleroom in Surrey on Thursday 12th December with viewing from Tuesday 10th December 2013. The catalogue and details of online bidding with no additional fee can be found at www.dnfa.com.

6. Remarkable Magic #330 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Phases and stages. (Part three)

My second night performing at the Magic Castle will always remain vivid and clear in my memory. It was late 1974 in the old Palace of Mysteries situated in the wine cellar of the Castle performing and I was performing with the great Johnny Platt. I know it was my second night because it was a Tuesday night or the set up the story better-the night that the Board of Directors met.

Immediately prior to ShowTime Don Lawton joined us backstage to introduce the show and asked me if I wanted to know who was out front. He then said something that made me sag slightly at the knees: Cary Grant was sitting at stage left with David Niven, Ingrid Bergman was seated with a group at stage right and Goldie Hawn was standing with a group at the back of the room! That was a spectacular audience even by Castle standards.

The Castle wasn't as fancy or elaborate back then as it is now, but it certainly was a lot more star-studded and fun. For about the next five years the Castle was my home from home and the source of a great deal of my income. It was also home to almost all my friends. Those 21 show weeks in the various showrooms seasoned me in a spectacularly efficient manner. There could not have been any better education.

You could go into a showroom with the idea for a trick and come out 7 nights later with a very polished routine. I enjoyed creating different characters and letting them loose with my show. Most of these shows were based on musical genres; there was Nick Costello-the punk magician, 'New Wave' Nick Cosmos, my reggae shows with 'The Conjurettes' and a few others. It was a lot of fun and very liberating to be able to work in this manner and I enjoyed myself immensely.

From 1978 I also began performing in various other LA clubs where I would often 'four-wall' one-man shows and try some very experimental shows. On Halloween in 1978 I presented the first of my 'Celebrity Séances' when I brought Buddy Holly back from the dead during a dark séance. Over the years I presented many of these events; my favorite was in Las Vegas in the mid '80s when Ross Johnson and I brought the pioneering comedian Lenny Bruce back to life at Bally's Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. This event was a career highlight.

During the '80s I was also quite a fixture on American TV both as a variety performer on the various talk shows and also as an actor on classic shows such as; 'Dynasty,' 'Amazing Stories,' 'Perfect Strangers' 'Misfits of Science,' 'Kung Fu- the Legend Continues' and a bunch of others. It was also a time when I was starting to make very regular appearances in showrooms in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe.

I was also producing and performing a lot of corporate events both in America and internationally in the '80s. I counted some of the very largest corporations amongst my clients and packaged rather spectacular magic shows for them. Initially I worked with my friend Piet Paulo but later started to perform illusions on my own. I once produced a 38-foot diesel truck for a client during a show. These were wild and wonderful times.

The '80s were also the era of the Comedy Club and for a decade a headlined in comedy clubs across the country. It was another whole education and one that taught me a huge amount about the reality of comedy and not just comedy-magic. I learned how to write stand-up material and deliver it successfully. That was a wonderful skill to learn and I am extremely glad that I took the opportunity to do so. It allowed me to approach my work with an entirely different set of eyes and ears.

After my two daughters Natasha and Katrina were born I began to realize that I needed to find a way to stop spending so much time on the road and be in one place to help them as they were growing up. I decided that the easiest place to make a comfortable living was in Las Vegas and began to think about creating a show that could run there for an extended duration.

There were no day shows playing in Las Vegas at that time and I decided to hone in on that market. I put together 'Comedy Magic' a one-man show based on my nightclub performance, and booked it for a two month run in Las Vegas in the cozy 150-seat theatre within the Maxim Hotel and Casino.

The show was given very little chance of succeeding by Vegas veterans, but happily I took the plunge anyhow. We defied the odds and I spent the next five-years performing it to sold-out audiences, and only leaving when the Hotel was scheduled to close. I will tell you more about the show and why it succeeded in next week's final column detailing my never less than fun journey in magic.

7. Entering New Markets - #322 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

A friend asked me recently how to enter into a new market and what the key points were to remember when doing so. I thought it was a great question and so I wanted to post my thoughts here for you. It is my goal to give you information that gets you thinking and perhaps may help you along your own personal journey.

The first thing to remember is that in entering any market you will fail. It is bound to happen. But do not get scared of this. Remember something I say all the time and is part of my lecture. It is also something I am sure many of you found out first hand.

"Failure is only failure if you fail to learn. If you learn even one thing, then failure is a stepping stone towards success."

The very first thing anyone needs to do be successful is the ability to take action and massive doses of it. Sitting on the couch does no one any good. You have to have the passion and desire to go out there and seek the success you want. That requires the desire and ability to actually do something about it. It's the drive and ambition that you cannot teach someone. You can tell them to do it, but unless they have that ability and passion, they will not go very far.

You next have to have a good show. Like any business you have to have a solid product or service that a customer wants. They have got to see value in you and what you provide directly to them. This product or service also needs to be targeted correctly to the right market in which you plan on working.

This leads me to my next point which is research, research and more research. Get to know your market or markets. Get to really understand them, what they do, how they operate. The more you know about your market the more you have the ability to effectively offer them powerful solutions that meet their needs and exceed their expectations. You can only do this by knowing about the market with as much detail as a professional should.

Once you know about your market/s you need to develop an understanding a concept called solutions providing. Most folks fail to realize that yes we are magicians. However, what we are really providing are solutions to the problems these customers are faced with. Think about it, why does anyone buy anything? They usually do because there is some need for it. That need can take many forms, but there is a need or needs.

If you can learn to find out what the typical needs are for the market you are working, you have increased value and marketing power. A lot of this can be found through your research and a lot can be discovered simply though the art of listening and asking. Too many folks talk and sell to the prospect and that is fine. But too many folks do not listen to the prospect. Learn to listen and get them talking. They will give you the problems or needs as they often always do.

Once you know these needs, your marketing is about targeting them. You do so by understanding benefits over features. You certainly need to list the features of your show (example: 45 min stage show, full sound system provided. etc.). They need to know what you provide to them. However, features are not strong enough. A consumer wants to know how these features you listed directly affect them. How does it benefit them?

These are your benefits. So get into a habit of listing not only features but how they features benefit them in a way that solves a problem they have. The more problems you solve, the value you have to them increases and that means more gigs at top dollar prices. This is what it means to be a solutions provider. It changes everything and changes your approach.

The last thing I will mention is to have a system set into place that works for you and shows you as a professional with 100% customer service. Customer service is everything. You need the ability to get back to people quickly and easily with branded information every single time. This means spending time up front to create a marketing plan and system and get them set into place. They can always be tweaked as you gain more insight, but you need to have them set up.

This can mean having templates for how you send out emails for the various touch points you will have with the prospect and client. It can mean establishing your Unique selling proposition and writing it down and posting it so you see if every day. It can mean having a short term goals sheet and a long term goals sheet so you know what you are driving for. It can mean having a system for lead generation and how you create and update that system every year and more. The idea is to work the business like a proper business.

Now these surely are just highlights and a general overview of what I try and do for every market I work or want to enter into. There certainly are more steps and more details for each of what I listed above. However, if you do follow the ideas mentioned here, I guarantee it will make a difference and a direct positive impact for you.

As always I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me at magic4u02@aol.com. I look forward to it.

10. E-Rase By Julian Arlandis
--------------------------------------------
Reviewed by Joel A Moskowitz

Challenge to the magical performer

It has been harder and harder to amaze audiences. With the progression of electrical wizardry. For example: few will remember eight track tapes. iPad and tablets astound. The eager public just yearns for the 'improved' version. In this rapidly changing environment, magicians threaten to be phased out. A YouTube video that brought smiles to many had a conjurer handling an iPad such that he caused to appear on the screen: a glass of beer which when he titled the iPad he was able to pour 'real' beer out of the side of the iPad! Jaded public smirk but they are not as excited as when Houdini's audiences were treated to Metamorphosis. Innovation in technology is accelerating.

E-rase is an effect where the magician/mentalist uses an apparatus which simulates a tablet. One can describe it as plate glass framed in a black border.

He uses a pen to inscribe a variety of symbols: ESP symbols or the face of die e.g. one thru six or variety of geometrical forms etc.

One effect: In the instance of the die pictures, he asks the spectator to roll the one real die. The superior surface value is the 'random' choice. The magician using a white cloth erases each of the other five values but cannot erase the 'choice'. Because the 'choice' has penetrated the glass! This effect can be replicated with the spectator selects four or five cards from an unprepared deck (no force). The card values are written on the 'tablet' i.e. QS, 4D, 9H etc. Another spectator can choose one of the cards which had been written on the glass. Again the white cloth erases (Hence the name Erase) all but the designated card because it has penetrated the glass.

The tablet is entirely examinable.

In the instance of penetration of the abbreviation of any card, calls to mind the penetration of a life sized true pasteboard of an actual window or better yet into a fish tank full of fish! Amazon is ramping up to use drones to deliver purchases within 30 minutes right to your front door.

It is a challenge for the modern presto-digitator. E-rase is a clever device but should be flavored with entertainment. Else the viewing public probably will say 'That is interesting but I have a tablet with A APs that does much more. The element of wonder should be inherent in magic which stimulates marvel. And is distinguished from nodding appreciation of advanDaces of science and technology. A magical performance should be entertaining.

Adam Grace's "Glass" some years back used a similar theme but different plot and method. If magicians are relegated to putting their lives in danger aka David Blaine, the art will dissuade all but those daredevil personalities.

In the meantime: The purchase of E-rase comes with all the apparatus and a DVD (in English) to explain how you use it. In the right hands, this is worth the $65.00.

Dr. Moskowitz prescribes E-rase 4/5 Rx 9. www.magic4pro.com

12. Dynamo To Receive Honorary Degree
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded by Mel Kientz

by Hannah Postles, T&A Reporter

Dynamo to receive honorary degree from Bradford University
Bradford magician Dynamo will be awarded an honorary degree by Bradford University during a graduation ceremony tomorrow.

The Magician Impossible star, 31, who grew up as Steven Frayne on Bradford's Delph Hill estate, will be made a Doctor of the University for his commitment to his home city, improving opportunities for young people and his long-standing charity work.

The Bishop of Bradford, the Right Reverend Nick Baines, will also be awarded an honorary degree for his contribution to the University and the city, while Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen, will be made a Doctor of Education for improving access to education in his home country over the last five years.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Brian Cantor, said: "The University of Bradford is honoured to have such distinguished guests at this year's award ceremonies.

"These eminent individuals are a credit to society and their respective professions. I hope their presence inspires our students to accomplish great things and to be driven in their future careers after they have graduated from the University."

Dynamo receives honorary
Degree at Bradford University
Ceremony today

No, it's not an illusion - Bradford magician Dynamo is now a doctor.

"If I go on an airplane, what do I do?" asked the new honorary graduate of Bradford University.

"Do I change my name? What if they ask if there's a Doctor Steven Frayne on board?

"I remember learning that mouth to mouth stuff and I know a little bit to get me by... but I hope that never happens!"

The 31-year-old, who grew up as Steven Frayne on Bradford's Delph Hillestate, could never have imagined he would end up standing in front of a group of academics at his home city university, giving a speech urging them to believe in magic.

However, it is reality - the Magician Impossible star was today awarded a degree for his commitment to Bradford, improving opportunities for young people and his charity work.

"Being back in Bradford is amazing," said Dynamo, dressed smartly in a black suit shortly after the ceremony.

"I haven't actually been back here since last Christmas, I've been so busy, so it's great to be here for such an amazing reason.

"I'm so humbled and honoured and, to be honest, giving my speech was the most nerve-wracking thing I've ever done.

"I've performed all over the world in the craziest places, doing crazy stunts - death-defying stunts at times.

"But giving this speech when I know I've got some of my family on the front row and knowing the people in the audience aren't any old people - they are people who are graduating, some after studying for eight or more years.

"And even the names of some of the things they were studying sound super, super intelligent.

"The amount of work they put in is just crazy and I just feel honoured I get to stand in a room with them and, hopefully, inspire them."

Dynamo, who will film part of his next series of Magician Impossible around the campus today, did not go to University himself.

But he said if he had, he would have studied film directing.

"I've always had a passion for creating amazing visuals. You've seen my work in front of the camera. I have my own film company now, so you might see me make my directorial debut in the next few years.

"But my real passion, other than magic and making films, but I don't think my manager will let me do it, is to become a stunt car driver.

"I had a go with David Coulthard in my last series - we filmed some magic while I was driving blindfolded - and he gave me some tips in the car, how to do some crazy things.

"I figured I could do that in movies. That could be my retirement job!"

Dynamo is best known for his stunning big-scale illusions and feats of close-up magic, but says he would never have reached such success without the influence of great-grandfather Ken Walsh, who he calls Grandpa.

"One person who was missed today was my Grandpa, who was the person who got me into magic and was the main reason I'm doing what I'm doing today," he said.

"But my Nana was there with his spirit in tow, my mum was there, my auntie, my partner - the most important people in my life.

"I couldn't believe it when I got the email asking me about the honorary degree. It was overwhelming and being here is surreal.

"But I'm working on series four of Magician Impossible and we're going to film around the University.

"It's all new stuff. I'm going to try out a few new things.

"I don't get back to Bradford as often as I used to or would like to and these are the people who helped me get to where I am today, so I think I should show them some magic."

But will he be changing the name of his show to Doctor Dynamo, in recognition of his new title?

"I think that's definitely going to be a conversation in the office," he said, with a smile.
