Roy
Horn 10 Years After Tiger Incident Is a 'Little Bit Handicapped'
It
was 10 years ago that Roy Horn of the celebrated duo Siegfried
and Roy stood on the Las Vegas stage. Suddenly, he was no
longer standing.
Instead,
he was being hauled off the stage in the mouth of a white
tiger named Montecore.
While
many assumed at the time that his death was a foregone conclusion,
especially considering he went "code blue" three
times that night and 25 percent of skull had to be removed,
Horn lived to tell his story.
But
how is he doing a decade after that horrific accident?

Good
to see magic going as strong as ever. AGT (Australia's Got
Talent) on Channel Nine still has three magicians in the
semi-finals with one of them (Ray Crowe) already going through
to the grand finale. Michael Boyd's performance last week
was fantastic with Sam Powers still to perform on the semi-finals
in 3 weeks' time.

7. Remarkable Magic #322 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Looking
back at the MAES Convention.
I
had a wonderful time last weekend at the MAES Convention
in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. It was the perfect model of
a smaller convention with masses of events that still left
room for the most important part of any convention-hanging
out with other magicians.
For
many of us, the emotional highpoint of the convention was
getting to see David Oliver attending his first convention
since the double lung transplant that he recently received.
It was wonderful to enjoy David's company and see him so
far along the road to full recovery from his medical problems.
There
are very few magicians who have given of themselves as freely
as David has to the magic community. The palpable sense
of excitement and pleasure that his presence at the convention
brought together amongst the attendees was both heartwarming
and powerful. Keep up that great recovery David!
I
am just going to 'cherry pick' a few of my personal highlights
from the event and due to space limitations have to leave
much unsaid that I would love to have commented on more
fully. I would be very remiss if I didn't begin with a big
thank you to Marc DeSouza who was responsible for me being
there. I first made Marc's acquaintance many moons ago and
it was a joy to catch up a little on all our mutual interests
in magic. Marc and Mike Miller did a great job in assembling
the talent for the convention.
The
pre-convention excitement kicked off with a bonus lecture
on Thursday night by Aldo & Rachel Colombini. The couple
presented 80 minutes of really great magic, and created
a lot of fun bantering between themselves throughout the
event. They sold a bunch of product and during the next
few days there was plenty of evidence that it was being
practiced!
I
particularly enjoyed getting to know Jimi Bizzaro a little
better during the course of the convention. I had seen Jimi
appear at Wonderground many times and was already a fan
of his unique approach to comedy/visuals/magic. His lecture
was really well planned and presented, it contained a great
many unique and visually dazzling effects. I found myself
lining up at his product table with cash in my hand and
the goofy enthusiasm of a teenager.
Bizzaro's
performance in the Saturday night show was also a highlight.
Commercial magic with a distinctive style and huge visual
appeal make Jimi a man to watch for in years to come. He
does a great job with what he performs and seems to have
limitless potential for the future. If you haven't discovered
Bizzaro yet - it is high time you did, he is the real deal.
I
was also delighted to catch Howard Hamburg's lecture on
Saturday, when he dazzled those present with his sleight
of hand. As the framework for the magic he displayed, Howard
told some great stories about the many world-class magicians
he has counted amongst his close friends at the Magic Castle.
You
have a lot to give when you have been the recipient of information
from the likes of Dai Vernon, Bruce Cervon, Charlie Miller,
Mike Skinner, Larry Jennings and Tony Giorgio. Howard shared
tips and tricks in a warm and friendly manner that made
him a real gem to all those attending the convention. It
was great to see Howard during the convention, always to
be found at a table holding a deck of cards and sharing
his immense knowledge.
In
this brief synopsis of the whirlwind convention I also want
to mention how impressed I was with the ultra-smart and
commercial work of Farrell Dillon who closed the show on
Saturday night. Farrell combines great magic, a nice sense
of humor and a gigantic likeability factor; these qualities
are going to keep his name at the very top of our industry
for many years to come.
It
was a great convention, filled with fabulous folk and I
enjoyed every single minute of it. I apologize to everyone
I didn't get to single out in this column-it certainly isn't
due to lack of appreciation, just space!

8. Lead Generation Ideas - #315 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
In the process of finding your own success, the first step
is always recognizing that you must get up off the couch
and take direct action yourself to seek it. It is about
setting long and short term goals every year and checking
up on your progress often. Assuming you have done that,
the next step that I often take is maintaining and finding
new leads for the markets that my wife and I work. You cannot
market effectively unless you have leads to market to. So
how do you find leads and establish leads? How can you create
systems that work for you so that lead generation becomes
a habit for you? Allow me to.
Well,
I would like to list a few of my own secrets that I use
and have made habit for coming up with leads every day and
all year around. For my wife and I, coming up with new leads
and keeping track of them is an important step in the process
we go through for the different markets we work each year.
-
One of my biggest tips is to start what my wife and I call
a "Leads Binder or Database". This is a binder
or online ACT database (or other CRM style database) that
is mainly used for anytime a new lead is spotted. I use
a binder (or electronic filing like Evernote etc.) mainly
and I have it set up by month and then by week. Each month
has a tab on it so I can turn to that month easily. Each
section is then set up according to date. This way I can
find a lead for any month and any date that I might be trying
to target.
Whenever
we see or find a lead, we gather all information that we
can and it gets placed into a plastic sleeve that then gets
placed into the binder according to that month and date.
The
idea behind the month and date is that if I have or see
an opening in our calendar, I can immediately go to that
section of our leads binder and find a lot of different
potential suspects and leads to do a mailing to. It helps
me to keep it all organized.
Now
how do we find leads? Let me give some ideas we have put
into place.
-
We are trained to always keep our eyes out for any poster
or sign as we are driving to work or about town. Because
one of our target markets is festivals and fairs, we always
see signs and banners around. What we now do is have camera
phones and we take pictures of these signs and banners as
we pass them. This information can then be downloaded and
recorded when we get home and entered into the leads binder.
There is simply a wealth of information out there that you
pass every day and may not even be aware of it. Daycare
centers, malls, schools, theaters etc. are all things you
pass every single day that could be directly related to
the market you work. Get in the habit of spotting these
and keeping track of them. Use them as new leads.
-
Every Thursday we get the local papers from a lot of different
areas in our performance area. We get these as many have
a weekend section in the paper. This is a gold mine for
potential leads that are perfect for us as we deal a lot
in family crowds and shows. Many of these have sections
in them for family events and things to do during the weekend
etc. This is a wonderful way to acquire a lot of new leads.
-
The Internet is also a wonderful tool for finding leads
if you just have some patience. I have my favorites categorized
and sites saved under different categories such as cub pack
sites, festival sites, chambers of commerce sites, parks
and recreation sites etc. This way they are categorized
and always available and at my fingertips when I need the
information for new leads. A little bit of research using
search engines like Google.com and others, will land you
a lot of great and useful sites you can use for lead generation.
-
I also use my past clients as lead generators through a
referral reward program. I always give them a thank you
kit after every performance and part of that kit talks about
referrals and encourages them to do so. We have received
many leads simply by remembering NEVER to forget your past
client and always staying in touch with them.
-
Business cards. I always have them with me and on me and
in every location and every car. It just becomes habit for
me to have them and to use them. Having cards does you no
good sitting in your box. You must be willing to not only
give them out, but be active enough to get cards in return.
There
are a lot of other tips, but I will leave it at this for
now. I know some of these may not be unusual, but they are
some of the things that have really worked wonderfully for
my wife and I and the system we set into place. I hope they
may be of help to you as you start to create ways to keep
your lead generation ongoing year round.

9. Death of Harry Garrison
--------------------------------------------
Message by Michael Woolf (NZ)
I
visited Harry Garrison at his home several years ago. I
was in Cincinnati at a convention of mechanical music collectors
and was surprised to see Harry's collection of magic posters
and other magic-related items. He was a larger-than-life
character and very vital despite being confined to a wheelchair.
His home had an elevator for access to the upper floors.
Cheers
Michael Woolf
This from the local press:
"Among Cincinnati's larger-than-life characters, Harry
Harwood Garrison "is right at the top of the list,"
said Jim Tarbell, former vice mayor.
Garrison,
who died Sept. 19 at age 77, was a player piano store owner;
expert smoke-ring blower; magician; antiques dealer; a Victrola
and art collector; jazz lover; University of Cincinnati
Evening College teacher; and a skilled repairman of pianos,
player pianos, carousel band organs and other automated
mechanical musical instruments.
"My
dad had a broad variety of tastes and interests. He lived
large, and absolutely loved life," said his son, Marshall
Harwood Garrison of Hyde Park, who has managed his father's
shops on Main Street Downtown and in O'Bryonville since
2000.
Born
Sept. 29, 1935, Mr. Garrison began performing magic at age
6 in his Westwood home. He told an Enquirer reporter in
1972 that he had done about 1,800 magic shows, mostly dressed
as Uncle Sam, with white hair and a beard.
After graduating from Western Hills High School in 1953,
he studied sociology at the University of Cincinnati. The
next year, at 19, he learned how to blow cigar smoke rings,
his son said.
"He
enjoyed being able to entertain people, and came up with
some patter about it. He liked it because it was singularly
unique," his son said.
Johnny
Carson's producers heard about him from author Calvin Trillin,
and invited Mr. Garrison to blow smoke rings on "The
Tonight Show" in 1980. Mr. Garrison turned a disaster
- a Carson staffer forgot to turn off the air conditioning,
making it impossible to form smoke rings - into a hilarious
clip Carson showed on two anniversary specials.
"Everyone
was laughing," said Tarbell of Pendleton. (The Carson
clip appears in "The Smoke Ring King" video on
YouTube.)
In
1973, Mr. Garrison gave Trillin a tour of Cincinnati area
chili parlors and restaurants, including the Shady Nook
with a Wurlitzer theater organ near Oxford, for a New Yorker
magazine article and his "American Fried" book.
Mr.
Garrison dropped out of UC his senior year in 1957 after
"he got a piano, tore it apart in his grandparents'
garage, and sold it for 10 times what it was worth,"
his son said."

16. Fundraiser For Joanie Spina
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by James Peterson (US)
Las
Vegas Sun
By
Robin Leach
Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013 | 11:03 p.m.
Fundraiser for Joanie Spina
David
Linsell
Sir Pat Trick.
MGM Grand headliner magician David Copperfield has been
an unsung hero in his two-year medical support of Joanie
Spina, his assistant of 10 years, as she battles an incurable
lung disease and is on oxygen to cope with the respiratory
illness. In turn, she is helping others and is a tireless
advocate for animal rights. This is one more of those amazing
and courageous Las Vegas hero stories.
It
looked as if she would have to return to Boston to be with
family, but loyal magicians in Las Vegas rallied with David
to ensure that she could stay on here and had the financial
support to cope with the illness. Lance Burton, Mac King,
Jeff McBride, Johnny Thompson, Norm Neilsen, Jan Rouven,
Fielding West, Jarrett and Raja and others, including David's
former employees, turned out for a fundraising party.
Joanie,
who directed many shows, including "Carnival of Wonders,"
over the last decade, also wrote the "Directions"
column at Las Vegas headquartered Magic magazine for four
years. Publisher Stan Allen told me: "She is a remarkable
lady and is beloved in the magic community. She always opened
her heart to every person who has ever crossed her path."
She
demonstrated her remarkable generosity one more time at
the recent Magic Live held at the Orleans with young magician
Patrick Thernes, who appears onstage as Sir Pat Trick. His
height, weight and stature all worked against him becoming
a success, but Joanie saw the star that could shine.
