3. Jon Stetson's Review Of "Scryer's 13" By Richard
Webster
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jon Stetson (US)
It's
hard to believe that it's only two years since Neal Scryer
burst onto the mentalism scene. People in the know have
known him by his real name for decades, but everyone was
caught by surprise when he agreed to let Richard Webster
write up his ideas and effects.
In
less than two years, Neal and Richard have produced six
books, full of dynamic routines using deceptively simple
means. I love them all, but think the most recent one, "Scryer's
13", is the best so far. Neal shares twelve original
effects, and 13 of his friends contribute their favorite
ideas and effects. My favorite effect in the book is Neal's
"Killer Easy Coin Bend."
I
saw Neal perform it three times and couldn't detect the
switch. It's a typical example of Neal's thinking. The method
is simple - ridiculously simple - and it's now something
I perform all the time.
The
other 13 contributors are Keith Barry, Meraux Dantes, Jerome
Finley, Sidnee Free, Docc Hilford, Ross Johnson, Ted Karmilovich,
Darrell Mac, Tony Michaels, Richard Osterlind, Sandra Sisti,
Peter Turner, and Richard Webster. Joe Curcillo wrote the
Foreword, and I had the honor of writing the Afterword.
The
book is available from Steven's Magic, Tannen's Magic, and
www.deceptionary.com. This book has my highest recommendation.

4. Remarkable Magic #318 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
A
few words about Focus.
This
week I want to say a few words about a very important topic
that does not get the attention it deserved. Focus. It is
a vital factor in taking your show from fairly good to really
good. If that sounds like a plan, then stick with me for
a few hundred words while we focus on focus.
My
first real discovery of how you could use focus to control
an audience was as a very young magician watching Billy
McComb transfix the entire audience at the London Palladium
putting a coin inside an empty mixer bottle. It was a power
object lesson and it took me many years to fully understand
it.
How
could a magician stand onstage in London's finest variety
theatre and entertain a huge auditorium with two such tiny
items? Eventually I realized it was all about focus. While
the focus never made the two objects larger, it certainly
made them more important and caused the audience to watch
more carefully. That's why the trick got the huge reaction
that it did.
The
first, and simplest, way the focus was controlled was via
the lighting. A tight spotlight on the action made the coin,
the bottle and the performers hands into the center of attention
for everyone present. In addition the way Billy focused
his own attention on the props caused the onlookers to do
likewise.
Another
entire sense was focused when he tapped the bottle sharply
with the coin and the entire theatre could hear the resulting
'clink.' The proximity of the coin/bottle to the microphone
around his neck made this a much more profound sound within
the theatre. It is easy to underestimate the importance
of ambient sound in performing magic.
The
simplest example of how to use focus to your advantage is
to realize that you are focusing your attention on the audience
when you are making eye contact with them. This in return
causes them to focus on your face-just what you want if
you are selling a joke with the help of your facial gestures
and reactions. On the other hand, if you have a small prop
in your hands then all you need to do is stare intently
at it in order to influence the audience into doing likewise.
This is a very simple but extremely important point.
Curiously
enough some of the very least focused magic that I see performed
is by mediocre illusionists who seem to think that the larger
sized props they use are a surefire way to be seen. If you
are sawing a lady in half then it is vital at one point
to really focus the audience's attention on the blade involved
in the effect.
Another
amateurish give away in an illusion show is the half-assed
twirls, turns and awkward dance steps that sometimes pass
for choreography in such shows. The job of an assistant
is to focus attention on the trick that is taking place.
Are you a bad dance act or a good magic show? Make your
decision and live with it.
As
an example of unfocused action think about the female assistants
you have seen padlocking the magician inside a sub trunk,
and doing a high kick in the air as they display each and
every lock before attaching them to the hasps on the crate.
This is wasted time and energy that looks dated and dumb
and in no way contributes to the action in the effect.
With
a top-notch illusion show every movement is planned to draw
attention, not solely to the performers, but in particular
to what they are doing and to the action of the ongoing
magic in the act. Just because you can do something doesn't
always mean that you should. Being precise and focused is
a much better procedure than being random or 'overdone'.
The
reason a comedian spends most of his time trying to cut
unnecessary words from his routine is because it more clearly
focuses the audience on the important words in the joke,
the words that get the laugh. The same is true for physical
actions which can just be distracting and get in the way.
By focusing your words and actions you maximize the impact
of the magic when it arrives.
My
rule of thumb is to keep cutting things down to the basics
(i.e. focusing) until you achieve the maximum impact with
the minimum effort. Ideally it should look like the magic
is happening on its own-- just because you happen to be
there. In the 40 years since I have been performing in the
United States I spent the first 20 learning what to do and
when, and the last 20 making it look like I'm not doing
anything.

5. Most Embarrassing Moment - #311 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron

http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
I am on stage at a festival and set to do a 30 min stage
illusion show, then 1 hour strolling and then another 30
min stage show. At the end of the first stage show I do
my modern style sword basket illusion. A Great and theatrical
piece performed in a serious style and to powerful music.
Well that was HOW it was supposed to happen.
It's hot, humid and I am wearing the wrong pants. 96 degrees
in the shade and I grabbed the tux pants that were just
a tad bit well, tight. I figured I have performed on stage
many times before so how hard could this possibly be?
Well the show starts and 5 minutes in my pants are already
riding up where they should not ever go. Not only riding
up but sticking and staying there. Now as good at misdirection
as we sometimes are, there was no technique in any book
I ever read for the anti-butt wedgy move.
As they say the show most go on and so it did in pain. I
get to the part where I dramatically take the sword and
swing it in an arc towards the sword basket. The music is
upbeat and powerful, I am upbeat and in my pose. I lunge.
Then the world suddenly changed. Somehow I did not realize
they installed central air in the backside of my pants.
The music also sounded different to me. I never recalled
a sound of RIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP coming from that piece of music
before. Yes folks I tore my pants. No I do not mean a little
rip. I mean it ripped all the way from the backside underneath
and the only thing holding the pants on was the elastic
band.
I learned an important lesson at that exact moment in time.
ALWAYS wear the same color underwear as the pants you are
wearing. Me.. Nope. Tightie Whities against black tux pants
and an audience of 600 people staring and wondering what
this was all about.
I suddenly became the master of a new move. The move I called
"never bend over or turn and hold the prop as close
to my crotch as I possibly could till the show was over."
I got very good at this move. I end the show and side step
off the stage.
Now it dawns on me. I have an hour of strolling magic to
do and another 30 min stage show. I am in the middle of
nowhere and getting new pants is not an option. What to
do. Ok kid do not panic... DUCT TAPE!!!! Oh yes folks duct
tape saved my life. A roll of black duct tape and 10 minutes
later and I was wearing what looked like a black duct tape
diaper. Not only on the outside but the inside as well.
The inside I soon realized not such a good idea in the heat.
Duct tape sticks and when it does, it is not moving. Trying
to get it off slow or fast. Still HURTS!!!!!
So as a pro I am doing my strolling magic and I realize
that my duct tape pants was such misdirection I could have
walked an elephant on to that field and no one would have
seen anything. So like a trooper I started coming up with
every single duct tape pants style jokes I could think of.
If there was ever jokes about duct tape and ripping your
pants, I suddenly knew them all or made them up.
So it comes time for my last show. No problem the lights
are not on and it is dim and finally the duct tape blends
in. This could be good. I could get through this. NOPE.
Lighting guy decides to do me a favor and turn the lights
and spots on. Now lighting on duct tape looks weird and
let's just say it GLISTENS!!!! I have now become the duct
tape superhero. Suddenly the serious show turned into a
comedy in a second... I was ok with that. My goal became
make them laugh their pants off. At least they would feel
like me.
So what did I learn from all of this:
1) You got to do what you got to do
2) Always have duct tape ... always
3) Go with the flow, if you can't beat them, join them
I'll never forget that day and I certainly will not forget
trying to remove it all. OUCH!!!!
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

6. The 77th Annual British Ring Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Geoffrey Newton
PRO and Advertising Manager
Looking
Back at Buxton
The
77th annual British Ring Convention took place in Buxton
(Derbyshire) from 4th - 8th September where several hundred
magicians gathered for 5 days of events in this lovely spa
town. Described by almost everyone I spoke to as a very
friendly convention it started with the usual formal opening
ceremony and then the magic began. The first show featured
Ali Cardabra, Michael Carr and Bertie Pearce all admirably
linked together with "Mr. Sunshine" himself Mike
O'Brien. Well Mike you did manage to conjure up four of
the five days with sunshine!
The
Gala of Youth (Wednesday) showed us all that the future
of magic is in safe hands with Mandy Fletcher, Edward Hilsum
(who went on to be a prize winner - see later in this article)
Megan and Sonny Pennington. They were all well looked after
by the well established performer Paul Dabek. The Stars
of the Future (Sunday morning) generally with younger students
of magic showed again magic continues to generate interest
with the up and coming generation.
The
convention awards were as follows: The Zina Bennett close
up Competition produced the following winners: First Steve
Faulkner Second Matthew Le Motte, Third Craig Petty and
Dave Forrest taking the Rovi Shield for the best work with
playing cards. In the British Ring Stage competition winners
were: First Oliver Tabor (who also took the Dittia Shield
for manipulation and the Originality Trophy) Second Edward
Hilsum and Third Atmosfear. The dealers trophy went to Practical
Magic and winning the Ali Bongo Micro Marathon being Bharat
Patel.
The
lectures and workshops covered a good range of topics and
I heard favourable remarks about all of them. In the Octagon
there was audience seating for the lectures and the dealers
all seemed happy with the arrangement of being set out round
the perimeter. New in the dealers hall/ registration area
this year was Face Painting Plus (Pam Cooper) who seemed
to generate considerable interest in this aspect of the
children's market. Also new, Jemma Tynan's Pop Up Museum
which gave professional advice on restoration and storage
of props.
The
"People" section had talks on Ian Adair, Davenport's,
Alan Shaxon, Randini, Patrick Page and Oriental Magicians.
To
make things a little different and varied some new aspects
of show business were included this year. The hilarious
act of Men in Coats registered well as did the Rat Pack
vocals (mixed with magic) from Joe Swing. Opera singer Kyla
Lingley (in the opera House - where else!) registered well
in the Gala Show. Talking of which, both the public shows
received enthusiastic attendances and have firmly stamped
our name in Buxton. Perhaps a future visit could be considered
sometime.
To
all the performers, lecturers, dealers, organisers, delegates,
advertisers and everyone else involved thank you for making
this a successful convention for the IBM British Ring and
please make a note of the 2014 convention which is 24th
- 28th September in Bournemouth. Further information will
be provided on www.magicconvention.co.uk as it becomes available.
Our 2013-2014 President Neil Roberts was installed on the
8th September 2013 and started, as so many of us did with
a Christmas present of a magic set and developed an interest
and talent for magic and illusion.
Neil
became an award winner in the 1980s leading to appearances
on Gala Shows at magical conventions in Britain and Europe.
These
days he is often to be found behind the scenes devising
and directing shows, but he is also an accomplished stage
and cabaret performer in his own right.
Neil
first joined the British Ring in 1980 and attended his first
convention at Brighton that year. He has been actively involved
in every convention since then; first as a competitor in
the annual competition for nine consecutive years, then
as a member of the convention stage crew, prior to taking
over as Stage Director in 1995.
Now
he will move out from working behind the scenes as he takes
on the mantle of British Ring President for the next twelve
months and looks forward to visiting various magic societies
throughout Great Britain and further afield as an ambassador
for the society.

For
anyone interested, or if you know of anyone who might be
interested, my good friend Paul Gertner is offering for
sale the Blaney Lighted Sword Cabinet which I invented and
marketed. It is also known as The Great Escape. A wonderful
stage illusion, and one of the all time best for using close
up at trade shows. Paul had great results, but now no longer
can do illusions in his work. He can be contacted at info@gertner.com
I'm sure you can get a real bargain.

Message by John Taylor (Australia)
Now
available, John Taylor's Suspended Animation 5. This new
version of SA gives the illusionist the power to perform
Suspended Animation 2 or 3 man but with a see-through pedistal?
Imagine being able to magically produce your assistant at
the start of the routine and then go into a super-fast Suspended
exchange without the need for a hidden assistant? The new
SA-5 innovations make this possible! After having built,
test driven and perfected 4 other Suspended props personally
all I can say is the 5th model, SA-5, is as good as it gets!

12. I.B.M. /S.A.M. 2014 Magic Championships
--------------------------------------------
Competition Rules And Contract
For
the first time at any magic convention there will be a triple
magic championship competition. The combination of the I.B.M.
and S.A.M. annual competitions with the 2014 FISM championships
will offer the greatest magic competition ever presented.
These three magic contests will offer a total of over $23,000
cash awards plus performing contracts.
A
potential of fifteen residents of North America will have
the opportunity to advance to the FISM 2015 World Championship
of Magic in Rimini, Italy. Also, two of these winners will
be crowned FISM 2014 North American Champions in each of
stage and close-up.
In
addition, all contestants regardless of residency will have
the opportunity to compete for all I.B.M. and S.A.M. awards
plus other awards and performing contracts.
The
information contained in this document must be carefully
read and understood by all those wishing to compete. Indicate
your acceptance by signing in the space provided below,
and return as an e-mail attachment to JCaesar@sentex.ca
Selection
of Competitors
Each contestant must be registered to attend the convention
and pay a separate $50 contest registration fee for stage
and/or close-up categories. The contest registration fee
will be refunded if the competitor is not selected.
The
number of contestants allowed to compete is limited to 30
stage contestants and 30 close-up contestants.
Contestants
will be selected by a panel of qualified judges prior to
the convention on the basis of video submissions. These
submissions should be via a link using Vimeo (www.Vimeo.com)
The submission must be made before March 31, 2014 in order
to be considered and must remain on the Vimeo link through
August 2014.
The
act that is submitted must be the same as the one you will
compete with in July.
Your
video submission act will be viewed only by the selection
judges.
Contestants
will be told of the judges' decision as soon as their videos
have been reviewed and all applications for entry will be
notified by April 15, 2014. The earlier your application
is submitted the earlier the decision of the judges will
be known and those who wait until the last minute will run
the risk of no entry slots being left.
Judging
the Competitions
During
the first round of competition all contestants for both
stage and close-up will be judged by a panel of FISM qualified
judges using FISM rules. (See Rules section.) This judging
panel will choose those from North America who qualify for
places at FISM 2015. They will also select the best contestants
regardless of residency to compete a second time in the
finals. The finals will be judged by the S.A.M. and I.B.M.
judges as well as People's Choice, decided by audience votes.
In the finals, the I.B.M. and S.A.M. judges will decide
on the recipients of their I.B.M. and S.A.M. awards based
on that performance.
In
order to qualify for one of the 15 available North American
slots and advance to the 2015 FISM World Championship of
Magic, a final score of 70 points must be obtained. Any
contestant under that score will not be considered as one
of the 15 Finalists. There are nine (9) slots available
for the F.I.S.M. stage competition and six (6) slots available
for the F.I.S.M. close-up competition.
The
selected candidates will be sponsored to compete at F.I.S.M.
2015 in Italy. This sponsorship does not include any financial
benefit or support by the sponsoring organization beyond
paying the FISM competition registration fee. All other
financial arrangements must be covered by the candidates.
Assignment
of the 15 North American F.I.S.M. slots
Only
contestants who live in North America and have been given
a qualifying score of 70% or higher will be eligible to
be sponsored to compete at F.IS.M. 2015. If there are more
than 15 qualified North American contestants the 15 with
the highest scores will be sponsored. If there are less
than 15 candidates from North America with a qualifying
score, the remaining places will be returned to the FISM
pool to be awarded by FISM at a later time.
Also,
the North Americans with the highest qualifying score in
each of stage and close-up will be named the FISM North
American Champion of Stage Magic and the FISM North American
Champion of Close-Up magic.
I.B.M./S.A.M.
and People's Choice
A total of nine contestants in each of stage and close-up
with the overall highest marks will compete for the I.B.M.
and S.A.M awards and the People's Choice Award. The competitor's
country of origin will not be a consideration for I.B.M.,
S.A.M. or People's Choice awards.
In
addition, performing contracts to perform at conventions
around the world will be awarded to these contestants.

you are a member of both the I.B.M and S.A.M. you may apply
to enter both contests.
*In
order to enter the FISM North American competition for 2015
FISM contest slots, you must be a resident of North America
and a member of a North American FISM organization (I.B.M.,
S.A.M., C.A.M.- Canadian Association of Magicians, or A.M.A.
- Academy of Magical Arts).
*All
accepted contestants, regardless of residence, may compete
to be considered for the IBM/SAM People's Choice Award.
*Please
bring an 8×10 color photograph to display the day
you compete.
*Contestants
will be given a 2-minute setup time and a 2-minute break
down time. There will be qualified people to help contestants
with this.
*Only
confetti & glitter may be used during a performance,
provided the performer uses a drop cloth to cover the area
over which everything will fall.
Flash paper, flash string and candles will be permitted.
Pyrotechnics of any other sort are strictly forbidden. Rules
and regulations of the St. Louis Fire Prevention Bureau
as to fireworks/pyrotechnics will be strictly enforced by
the fire marshal.
*If
you plan to drop anything on the floor (e.g. cards, confetti,
glitter) you may do so ONLY if you supply your own drop
cloth. (This is a cloth that covers the floor area on which
material would drop.) If you do not bring a drop cloth and
plan to drop anything on the floor, you will not compete,
or be disqualified if you do. No exceptions.
Abiding
by FISM rules:
A contestant must present a complete act (not a single trick)
of at least five minutes and not more than ten minutes.
Remember to consider audience reaction when timing your
act.
A
contestant who presents an act that is obviously a copy
of another act, or a significant or typical part of another
performer will be disqualified.
The
timing of an act begins when the contestant enters the stage
or when the music of the act starts, whichever comes first.
The
contestant's undertaking includes the right to perform the
act in question and encompasses the contestant securing
all ancillary rights and licenses whether music or otherwise
from all legally required third parties, if applicable.
At
the front of the stage will be two electric lamps, one yellow
and one red. After nine minutes of a performance, the yellow
lamp will be switched on. After the tenth minute, the red
lamp will be switched on, showing the contestant that he
or she is over time and therefore disqualified.
Judges
will each have access to a switch to activate the red lamp
on the performing platform. If, after the first three minutes
of an act, a Judge is of the opinion that the performance
is below the FISM level, he can press his button. When at
least 70% of the number of Judges have pressed their button,
the red lamp shall be activated to start flashing, meaning
the contestant is disqualified. In the stage competition
the curtain shall be closed within 20 seconds after the
red lamp started flashing.
The
FISM Jury will mark each act with regards to the following
criteria:
Technical Skill/Handling
Showmanship/Presentation
Entertainment value
Artistic Impression/Routine
Originality
Magic Atmosphere
