A very BIG thank you to Rosemary McCarthy, Managing Director of International Entertainment for renewing sponsorship of the Magic New Zealand e-zine for the next twelve months.

It's happening in other countries, and now it could well happen to the children's birthday party magic show industry in Auckland, New Zealand. UNDER CUTTING. Not just by a few dollars, but by two thirds the regular fee. The antics of one local magician could well spell the end of a long running industry, as well as threatening the livelihood of everyone involved in entertaining children with magic in Auckland, New Zealand. I would be interested to know where else it's happening and your thoughts …

3. I.B.M. /S.A.M. 2014 Magic Championships
--------------------------------------------
If you are planning to compete at the I.B.M. /S.A.M. 2014 Magic Championships and FISM 2014 North American Championships you will need to register VERY SOON as it is projected that the convention will be sold out before the end of this year.

To register go to: http://ibmsam.com/registration/

I.B.M. /S.A.M. 2014 Magic Championships and FISM 2014 North American Championships.

Competition Rules And Contract

For the first time at any magic convention there will be a triple magic championship competition. The combination of the I.B.M. and S.A.M. annual competitions with the 2014 FISM championships will offer the greatest magic competition ever presented. These three magic contests will offer a total of over $23,000 cash awards plus performing contracts.

A potential of fifteen residents of North America will have the opportunity to advance to the FISM 2015 World Championship of Magic in Rimini, Italy. Also, two of these winners will be crowned FISM 2014 North American Champions in each of stage and close-up.

In addition, all contestants regardless of residency will have the opportunity to compete for all I.B.M. and S.A.M. awards plus other awards and performing contracts.

The information contained in this document must be carefully read and understood by all those wishing to compete. Indicate your acceptance by signing in the space provided below, and return as an e-mail attachment to JCaesar@sentex.ca

Selection of Competitors
Each contestant must be registered to attend the convention and pay a separate $50 contest registration fee for stage and/or close-up categories. The contest registration fee will be refunded if the competitor is not selected.

The number of contestants allowed to compete is limited to 30 stage contestants and 30 close-up contestants.

Contestants will be selected by a panel of qualified judges prior to the convention on the basis of video submissions. These submissions should be via a link using Vimeo (www.Vimeo.com) The submission must be made before March 31, 2014 in order to be considered and must remain on the Vimeo link through August 2014.

The act that is submitted must be the same as the one you will compete with in July.

Your video submission act will be viewed only by the selection judges.

Contestants will be told of the judges' decision as soon as their videos have been reviewed and all applications for entry will be notified by April 15, 2014. The earlier your application is submitted the earlier the decision of the judges will be known and those who wait until the last minute will run the risk of no entry slots being left.

Judging the Competitions

During the first round of competition all contestants for both stage and close-up will be judged by a panel of FISM qualified judges using FISM rules. (See Rules section.) This judging panel will choose those from North America who qualify for places at FISM 2015. They will also select the best contestants regardless of residency to compete a second time in the finals. The finals will be judged by the S.A.M. and I.B.M. judges as well as People's Choice, decided by audience votes.
In the finals, the I.B.M. and S.A.M. judges will decide on the recipients of their I.B.M. and S.A.M. awards based on that performance.

In order to qualify for one of the 15 available North American slots and advance to the 2015 FISM World Championship of Magic, a final score of 70 points must be obtained. Any contestant under that score will not be considered as one of the 15 Finalists. There are nine (9) slots available for the F.I.S.M. stage competition and six (6) slots available for the F.I.S.M. close-up competition.

The selected candidates will be sponsored to compete at F.I.S.M. 2015 in Italy. This sponsorship does not include any financial benefit or support by the sponsoring organization beyond paying the FISM competition registration fee. All other financial arrangements must be covered by the candidates.

Assignment of the 15 North American F.I.S.M. slots

Only contestants who live in North America and have been given a qualifying score of 70% or higher will be eligible to be sponsored to compete at F.IS.M. 2015. If there are more than 15 qualified North American contestants the 15 with the highest scores will be sponsored. If there are less than 15 candidates from North America with a qualifying score, the remaining places will be returned to the FISM pool to be awarded by FISM at a later time.

Also, the North Americans with the highest qualifying score in each of stage and close-up will be named the FISM North American Champion of Stage Magic and the FISM North American Champion of Close-Up magic.

I.B.M./S.A.M. and People's Choice

A total of nine contestants in each of stage and close-up with the overall highest marks will compete for the I.B.M. and S.A.M awards and the People's Choice Award. The competitor's country of origin will not be a consideration for I.B.M., S.A.M. or People's Choice awards.

In addition, performing contracts to perform at conventions around the world will be awarded to these contestants

It is possible that one person could win more than one of the top awards.

Abiding by FISM rules:

A contestant must present a complete act (not a single trick) of at least five minutes and not more than ten minutes. Remember to consider audience reaction when timing your act.

A contestant who presents an act that is obviously a copy of another act, or a significant or typical part of another performer will be disqualified.

The timing of an act begins when the contestant enters the stage or when the music of the act starts, whichever comes first.

The contestant's undertaking includes the right to perform the act in question and encompasses the contestant securing all ancillary rights and licenses whether music or otherwise from all legally required third parties, if applicable.

At the front of the stage will be two electric lamps, one yellow and one red. After nine minutes of a performance, the yellow lamp will be switched on. After the tenth minute, the red lamp will be switched on, showing the contestant that he or she is over time and therefore disqualified.

Judges will each have access to a switch to activate the red lamp on the performing platform. If, after the first three minutes of an act, a Judge is of the opinion that the performance is below the FISM level, he can press his button. When at least 70% of the number of Judges have pressed their button, the red lamp shall be activated to start flashing, meaning the contestant is disqualified. In the stage competition the curtain shall be closed within 20 seconds after the red lamp started flashing.

The FISM Jury will mark each act with regards to the following criteria:
Technical Skill/Handling
Showmanship/Presentation
Entertainment value
Artistic Impression/Routine
Originality
Magic Atmosphere
I understand and will abide by the above Rules.

4. CW Revives Magic Show 'Masters of Illusion'
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded by Gay Blackstone (US)

The Hollywood Reporter

The network has ordered 13 hour-long episodes of the series that most recently aired on MyNetwork TV.

The network is reviving Masters of Illusion, a show that features comedic magic, daring escapes, grand illusions and more. The series, which ran for three seasons and most recently aired on MyNetworkTV, has received an order for 13 hour-long episodes set to air in 2014.
Production on the show will begin in late July and run through early September, filming in locations including spots on Los Angeles' famed Hollywood Boulevard, New York's Times Square and venues in New Orleans and Orlando.

The series hails from Associated Television International, which boasts the largest library of magic-themed programming. The banner has produced specials including the World Magic Awards and Masters of Illusion Live, the largest globally touring magic show. The tour, now in its third year, has made 135 stops across the U.S. and Canada as well as international tours in Peru, the Philippines and Singapore, with an eight-country European tour in the works.

The new CW incarnation will feature magicians including Rick Thomas, Murray Sawchuck, Farrell Dillon, Jan Rouven, Drexus, Zelandra and Titou, among others. It will be executive produced by Gay Blackstone, a former president of the Academy of Magical Arts, who will again team with producers David Martin and Al Schwartz.

Masters of Illusion comes as the CW is finding modest success with unscripted fare that also includes the upcoming Hunger Games-esque competition effort Capture, Oh Sit! and the revival of improv series Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Sony Pictures Television will handle international distribution of the series.

A premiere date for Illusion has not yet been determined.

5. Remarkable Magic #315 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

'Desperate Acts of Magic.'

It is always nice to watch new trends affecting the status quo in magic, and the new indie movie 'Desperate Acts of Magic' falls right into that category. It is a fun feature length movie about magic and magicians. There are magicians who can make movies as well as do shows-yay.

By the list of donors in the closing credits I am assuming that the movie was eased into being by a 'Kickstart' style of fund raising. This is a nice way to expand the ability of talent to realize the full potential that is contained in our creative community. In my opinion it makes more sense to use this resource for a movie than a one-off show.

There are some funny moments in 'Desperate Acts of Magic' that I really enjoyed and laughed at. However the movie doesn't go for a series of one-liners or desperately easy targets, but instead does have the approach and feel of a traditional indie movie. It has a nice storyline, likeable characters and there is very little dead air involved in progressing the storyline along its arc. This isn't the case and doesn't happen often enough in mainstream mega movies.

'Desperate Acts of Magic' is currently being promoted by its production company, Gold Cap Films, at various magical events in the magic world and its official release on DVD is September 10th. I picked up a copy at the recent PCAM Convention and paid $20, it even included a signed poster. As a magic lover and a movie buff I was excited to support the release of the film; I was even happier that I enjoyed it as much as I did.

The movie is a thinly disguised re-tread of the life of its writer, co-director, co-producer and co-editor Joe Tyler Gold. Gold has been busy acquiring a nice reputation for his work in the world of movies and has been adding some great press reaction from 'Desperate Acts of Magic'. Along with co-producer Tammy Caplan, these are definitely two names to watch for in the future, all the hallmarks for continuing success are present in this movie.

The movie follows the journey of Jason Kant (Joe Gold) as he trades in his job as a computer programmer for life as a professional magician. He falls in love with a savvy street magician Stacy Dietz (Valerie Dillman) and with the help of his mentor Steve Kramer (Jonathan Levit) tries to make his dream a reality. Somehow winning the International Magic Contest in a San Diego magic convention is the first step in this process, and that is where the movie heads thematically and geographically. The journey even includes a brief trip 'South of the Border' down Mexico way.

All three of the movie's key players do an excellent job in the movie and I also really enjoyed the performances of Sascha Alexander, William Salyers and Stephen Wastell. A special shout out to John Getz as 'Don Tarzia' who I happily recognized from his role in the Coen Brothers great neo-noir, Round Rock based thriller 'Blood Simple.' The entire featured cast did a great job on a project that obviously didn't run to superstar budgets. I for one am bored with the effects of cash in creative projects, give me a fresh vision over big bucks any day of the week.

As a magician I was just as excited by the many guest appearances of magicians that are scattered throughout the movie, they will keep you alert and interested in the proceedings. I won't give the game away too much but there are lots of our favorite LA magical characters on display throughout the production and you will enjoy spotting them.

The movie is fast moving and fun, however the take away-- that the magic world is sexist and magic clubs curiously out of date, are no great revelations to anyone; it is a very pleasant trip. It is great to see such an ambitious (don't be fooled by 'Desperate Acts of Magic' low key approach, it was a decidedly ambitious undertaking) release from within the magic world.

If you want to be a part of this project it is too late to get your name on the donor's list after the credits roll. However if you visit the website at http://www.desperateactsofmagic.com you can pick up a DVD of the movie and show your support in this very practical manner, I think you will be very pleased you did so. There is even a director's commentary version of the movie that I suspect will be filled with the kind of details and incidents that I am longing to hear about the movie, I will be playing it next but I wanted to write this review solely based on the movie.

I have just added three new items to the Online Store on my website-'Nick Lewin's Ultimate Slow Motion Newspaper Tear,' 'Nick Lewin's Ultimate Microphone Holder' and 'Nick Lewin's Ultimate Signed Card in Envelope.'

6. Why Perform the Chair Suspension - #308 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

I always perform the chair suspension at every b-day party. I wanted a strong ending effect that can make the b-day child the star of the day and really have a great photo opportunity in the process. Now I perform this illusion at every b-day show I do and have my wife take a digital pic of the child at the moment they are being suspended on the chair. This allows me to send the image with a thank you card after the show or even via email as a virtual thank you.

I know for me that even though my chair suspension cost me a bit of money, it is the routine I have developed over time that really is what makes it personally priceless for our show. So much so that I probably would have easily paid double just to own it because of the reactions I get the fun and empowering moment it causes to the child.

I also charge more for this b-day package but I find out that folks do not have a problem with this because it is just such a powerful draw to them and a great way to end a perfect day for their child. In becomes a very power sales tool.

Once again, for me, the chairs are not a problem or a burden to carry into a b-day show and really do not take up that much room. I have done it at most every type of b-day show and in different conditions and have never had a problem with it. In fact I have found the perfect carry bag so that the entire illusion goes into the bag and I can carry it in one trip. I have shared this bag with others and will with anyone. Just email me at magic4u022aol.com. My pleasure.

Do I ever wish there was an even better suspension to meet my show needs? You bet!!! Have I searched and researched to find it? Yes I have done that also. What I have found works best for me and my needs is the chair suspension. I know this may not be perfect for everyone, but you have to look at it yourself and find out if it meets your own needs. For me I like it because it:

- Packs fairly small to fit in a car etc.
- Sets up very fast and breaks down in no time
- Is not very heavy to carry
- Gets a terrific reaction if and when performed properly
- Can be performed virtually surrounded with less angle problems

Is there something out there that can do the same thing better? Maybe there is, but I have not found it yet. I certainly will keep looking and am always open to other ideas. For now, the chairs have met all my show needs.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

Entertainers, please visit:
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

I paid my chair suspension off time and time again. It has just been such a great staple to any show I do. The fact that it packs down flat, sets up easily and can be done virtually surrounded is such a strong selling point to anyone. Sure it is an

Yes, it does cost some money but consider it as an investment. Usually 2-3 paid b-day shows pays the illusion off. I find that very well worth the money.
