2. MagicPedia A Wikipedia Like Project
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joseph Pecore
MagicPedia,
a Wikipedia-like project for the history and culture of
magic, will hold its first annual global get-together called
"All Things Magic Edit-a-thon" on
Saturday September 14th, 2013. Held collaboratively on-line
and at participating local 'parties', this event promotes
bringing together magic enthusiasts from around the world
in order to help update the free online encyclopedias -
MagicPedia and Wikipedia.
Multiple
cities across the USA and Canada have signed up, including
'All Things Magic Edit-a-thon parties' held by generous
sponsors like Grand Illusions Magic shop in northern California,
the Conjuring Arts Research Center in NYC, and at MagicPedia
Headquarters located in Washington, D.C.
The
inspiration for creating an online event like this for magic,
recalled Joe Pecore, head administrator for magic's free
encyclopedia, "We built MagicPedia on the same wiki
software and principles as Wikipedia, but consider our content
strictly geared towards magicians as the audience. It allows
us to add more detailed magic related information that doesn't
really fit within Wikipedia's guidelines. But there are
some areas that intersect," Pecore said. "And
that's where we need to share that information between the
two wikis. Our rich history deserves a spot in all encyclopedias."
The
basic goal of the "All Things Magic Edit-a-thon"
is to share information with both wikis, as well as add
new entries and modify old ones. "It's as simple as
copy, and paste," says Steve Johnson the owner of Grand
Illusions Magic Shop. "Just show-up and participate.
We will teach you how to do what you need to do, on the
spot."
During
the "All Things Magic Edit-a-thon", those who
participate, receive access to the highest level of AskAlexander
membership for the duration of the event. This will allow
more advanced helpers to delve into AskAlexander.com for
factual notes and historical references, then add them to
the encyclopedia listings enhancing data to ensure a richer
learning experience. Anyone may also refine the current
data entries that already exist.
Anyone
with an interest in magic and in having a great time is
encouraged to attend. Even if you just have a favorite magician
you would like the volunteers to research, join in to provide
ideas. No experience necessary!
On
Saturday September 14th, join the "All Things Magic
Edit-a-thon" by participating at:

3. A Version Of The Fabled Indian Rope Trick
--------------------------------------------
Message by David John O Connor
Australian
magician and magical historian Jim McKeague from far Northern
Queensland has just completed an in depth research into
the life and career of a former English magician Arthur
Claude Darby who settled in Australia during the last century
and performed under the stage name of "The Great Karachi."
He presented a version of the fabled Indian Rope Trick appearing
at country and state fairs around Australia.
Little
was now about this unique performer but after much effort,
Jim has finally managed to put his story into print on his
new website http://www.theindianropetrick.com
For
those of you interested in the history of magic you may
enjoy this fascinating and quite intriguing story that to
this day is still discussed among fellow magicians.

4. 2014 Combined Convention Hotel Reservations
--------------------------------------------
Message by Becki Wells (US)
Some
of our registrants recently had problems reserving rooms
at the Renaissance St. Louis Grand Hotel - the host hotel
for the I.B.M./S.AM. Combined Convention. The problem has
been resolved. If you were not able to make your reservations,
please feel free to contact the hotel and make your reservations
now.
The
problem was reserving hotel rooms on the "shoulder
dates". These are the days immediately before and after
the convention dates. Our hotel representative has increased
the number of rooms in our hotel block for those dates,
relieving the problem.
If
you haven't made your reservations yet, you can get to the
hotel reservation site through our website: http://ibmsam.com/hotel/
and clicking link for the hotel; or by calling 1-888-236-2427
(be sure to tell them you are with the I.BM./S.A.M. Combined
Convention to get the special rate). The convention room
rates are applicable 3 days prior and 3 days following the
convention dates (subject to availability). Room rates are
guaranteed until the cutoff date - June 9, 2014.

In
the article just posted about Jeton, Anthony Darkstone writes:
"Incidentally, to the best of my knowledge he is the
only juggler who incorporates Magic effects in his act."
In
fact, the very accomplished Mr. Jeton joins a list of that
includes names both past -- Topper Martyn, Whitey Roberts
-- and present -- Charlie Frye, Fred Cie Poc.
Those
are the ones that immediately came to mind; there are many
others.

'Jazz Magic' for stand-ups.
The
first time I was ever introduced to the concept of 'jazz
magic' was by Daryl Easton in one of his books, but probably
does not originate there. I'm really not much of an expert
on the origins and history of magic. There are many magicians
whose ability to trace magical roots and credits is almost
uncanny in its precision and depth. In all honesty it sometimes
inspires me and just about as often bores me to tears.
I
am pretty sure that 'jazz magic' also finds its roots in
the thoughts and ideas of the master himself, Dai Vernon.
If I am incorrect in this assumption then I am sure someone
will let me know. As I move towards my seventh year writing
a weekly magic column I have discovered that writing articles
that people enjoy and agree with is no guarantee of a full
inbox on my computer-but if you get something wrong....
The
basic concept behind this school of 'jazz' thinking is that
you have plenty of extra knowledge of moves and sleights
that you can use to achieve the magical effect that you
are performing. Circumstances and angles change during a
performance and so do your methods. Needless to say you
need a lot of background knowledge and skills to be able
to improvise and adapt to changing conditions in this manner.
The
nice part of keeping your methods flexible is that it makes
you much more observant about your work and keeps you firmly
in the moment. When performed correctly this approach to
performing should be scarcely noticeable to a lay audience,
it is a very subtle thing indeed. Maybe this is why I like
it so as much as I do-- I am a big fan of subtle. It comes
in just ahead of oblique in my book.
My
very favorite thing to do in magic is to sit down with a
regular deck of cards and perform an unplanned and unstructured
set. This gives me enormous pleasure and if it paid a fraction
as much as my stand-up comedy magic act does it would be
my overwhelming choice as a magical vehicle. However, having
supported myself in a nice style with my comedy magic show
for over 40 years, it has become something of a luxury.
I
have certainly not forgotten this 'jazz' principle over
the years and have absorbed it into my work as a stand-up
performer and I believe it has been a great addition to
my skills as a performer. It can be very easy to settle
into a groove (or rut) when performing a fairly consistent
set list in your shows, and I have tried to fight this as
much as possible.
When
I walk onstage to perform I have a very clear vision of
what my default show is and how I mean to accomplish the
various effects that comprise this show. This doesn't in
any way interfere with the fact that I have usually got
a dozen variations of the show at my fingertips. Not just
different tricks to choose from but different ways to achieve
the various effects that I choose to perform.
The
only things that are unlikely to vary much in my show are
my opening and closing pieces; these are two areas where
I feel consistency is really an essential benefit to my
overall performance. As for the rest of the show, I am free
and easy to mix and match tricks and methods according to
circumstances and whim. This gives a rather delightful sense
of freedom to my performing instincts. It can also be beneficial
in a more practical manner.
Sometimes
a new circumstance presents itself just prior to show time
that makes an adjustment necessary. Once in a while I am
getting ready for a show and discover that even the minimal
fire I use in my show is unacceptable. Instead of panicking
I have an alternative method set and ready in my case. Equally
importantly I have practiced the 'fire-free' method and
know I can make it work.
As
long as you are prepared and flexible then you can do your
job without any awkward moments, and just like close-up
'jazz magic' no one is even aware that you have significantly
changed your repertoire or methodology. You, however, can
bask in the knowledge that you are more than just a magician-you
are an alert, prepared and totally professional performer.
This is a great feeling!

7. Customized Invite Solution - #308 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron

http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
I wanted to write this time to tell you about a system I
have been using for years that has just been amazing to
me and has worked incredibly well. I kept it to myself for
a long time simply because it was something that has generated
me shows, more gigs, and happy clients. However, it is time
to share the idea with others. My pleasure.
I do a lot of events that are party focused. This simply
means invites need to go out and be sent out by the client
to the people that they want to come to their event. It
is a pain for the clients to handle this along with everything
else on their plate. In essence it is another problem they
need a solution for.
A while back I realized I could be that solution. If we
are solution providers, we can provide a customized solution
to a need they have. If we do this, our value climbs and
that means better customer server, better clients and more
jobs down the road.
I realized why could I be the one to design the invites
and send the invites out to the client? One less thing they
have to do and I look like a million bucks. Now of course
I wanted to make this easy and the system I developed could
not be any easier. Let me explain.
I developed an invite template that is in full color and
looks great. There is an area for my photo (which I can
change out) and it has my contact information and website
on the bottom. In other words it is branded to me and what
I do. Now the invite also states "(client name) is
having an Amazing Magic show with me, (your name). We hope
you can appear." It then has areas for the date, time,
location and RSVP to sections." These sections have
white boxes so that the client can place in the information
themselves."
Each of the invites fits 3 up on an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper.
All I have to do is enter the clients name and send them
off a high resolution (300DPI) JPG to them after the booking.
It is just that easy. They receive the JPG file and can
print it out on their own printer. They can hand write in
the information in the boxes or they can type the information
in as it is their choice and both super simple and easy.
This has been a selling tool for me and for shows. I state
that I provide the invites for them. They no longer have
to worry about it. That helps sell my show even more and
I get more people interested. When I book the show, I tell
them that I will be sending them the invite sheet in an
email directly to them that day. To look for it and ask
me if they have any questions. They ALWAYS thank me for
this and cannot believe an entertainer thought of THEM.
They then take the file and enter the information in and
mail them out. So simple, so easy and best part is that
it is branded to you. All these people get to know your
show and your contact information before, during and after
the show is long over.
It is such an easy process that GETS results every single
time and doesn't take you any time at all. Now I have made
this even easier for YOU to utilize.
I have created a full color customized invite template set
up 3 to a page on 8.5 by 11 paper. It looks totally professional.
You just simply send me a photo and a few bits of information
(text and contact info) and I set up the base invite file
to be branded to YOU. Once it is done, I send you over the
final file as a JPG file (which can be opened in any application)
and you are done. It is just that easy. There is NOTHING
more you have to do.
Advertise in your site that you now offer invites to your
clients free of charge. When they book you, mention it and
send them the file to them via email. There is nothing you
have to do or fill out. When the client gets it, they can
enter the information they want into the provided areas
and mail them out. Simple right. Of course it is.
It makes you look like a star because you are providing
a customized solution to them and they will thank you for
it. This gets you gigs, lands you gigs and makes your clients
very happy.
Certainly you could make this yourself, but why when I have
done all the hard work for you. As a professional designer,
I have created a full color invite that just looks amazing
and will make you look even better.
I have a sample of what the invites look like. If anyone
would like to see a free sample you can check it out at
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=348444251953990&se
t=a.163629940435423.37133.163588843772866&type=1&theater
Or by going to https://www.facebook.com/perondesign. You
can also just email me as well. I would be happy to tell
you more about it.
People think I am crazy and maybe I am. However, I am offering
fully set up and customized invite for you branded for YOU
for just $25 US. That is it. Once you have it set up and
done, you can use these forever and land shows. I guarantee
this will make a difference to you and I am happy to provide
this service to you my friends.
So please, if you have any questions at all about this new
system or how it can work for you, please email me at magic4u02@aol.com.
I would be happy to show you the power of this system and
just how easy it is for you. There literally is NO work
on your end at all.

8. Magician June Horowitz Celebrates 100th Birthday
--------------------------------------------
Article forward on by Mel Kientz (US)
Magician
June Horowitz celebrates 100th birthday at Abbott's Magic
Get-Together in Colon
By
Jef Rietsma
Special to MLive
COLON, MI - She broke the gender barrier in the world of
magic and illusion, even though her work was discredited
for years because she was female.
But a tough-to-discourage demeanor was an attribute that
helped June Horowitz eventually earn universal recognition
and respect from her peers in the industry.
"She broke the glass ceiling and went on to become
the first President of the International Brotherhood of
Magicians (in 1987-88)," said Carole Ryal, a Colon
resident and longtime friend of Horowitz.
With
a steady stream of admirers and counterparts on hand Thursday,
a 100th birthday celebration for Horowitz took place at
FAB Magic Co. in downtown Colon. A Grand Rapids resident,
Horowitz also had a chance to see for the first time her
sidewalk marker that will be installed in Colon's Magicians
Walk of Fame.
True
to her nature, Horowitz downplayed both the milestone birthday
and her Walk of Fame honor. Horowitz is the first female
to earn a marker in the Walk of Fame.
"When
it comes down to it, the only thing I really contributed
to my 100th birthday was that I kept on breathing,"
she said, drawing a laugh from the assembly of about two
dozen people.
One-hundred
cupcakes arranged to form the digit "100" were
offered to guests during the celebration.
As
far as her Walk of Fame marker, Horowitz said others in
the world of magic and illusion are more deserving. Regardless,
the marker will be installed in the sidewalk on the north
side of State Street in downtown Colon before her Sept.
10 birthday.
A
former math teacher at Ottawa Hills High School, Horowitz
was in town for the 76th Abbott's Magic Get-Together. The
annual celebration ended Saturday.
Horowitz has never missed any of the 76 Get-Together events.
Asked to name the most famous magician she's ever met, Horowitz
said in her mind, they're all equal and should be recognized
for keeping alive the niche art of magic and illusion.
Randy
Vander Wal, also from Grand Rapids, said Horowitz's rope
and card tricks at close-up events always dazzled audience
members. Vander Wal said Horowitz was not only a strong
performer, but she had an unparalleled story-telling ability
that brought life to each of her demonstrations.
Many
of those, he said, she used as a teacher to keep the interest
of her students and parlay a lesson into a trick.
"She
was so well-liked by her peers and her students," Vander
Wal said, adding how much more he would have enjoyed high
school math if his teacher was a magician on the side and
occasionally performed in the classroom. "Her dad and
her husband were both magicians, so it's something that's
been a part of her for her entire life."
Jim
Parkes, a Grand Rapids magician, said he has followed Horowitz's
magic since he was 13. He said her signature illusion involved
matrix coins.
"As a kid and even a young adult, after I had gotten
into the field, I was amazed at the tricks June did,"
Parkes said.
Horowitz
is still an active member of the Grand Rapids IBM Ring 211,
named the June Horowitz and John DeVries Magic Club.
She
lives on her own but with a caretaker, and always looks
forward to the four days in August that are the Abbott's
Magic Get-Together.
Horowitz
recalled how in her early days at shows in which she was
performing, her title in programs was listed "musician"
instead of "magician." Horowitz at first thought
the misprint was a legitimate typo, but realized she still
hadn't earned the respect of her peers when programs at
other shows still "erroneously" referred to her
as musician instead of magician.
"It
was a boys' club for many, many years," she said.
The
other Walk of Fame stars for 2013 are: The Amazing Conklins,
Percy Abbott, Bill Watson, Wilma Rench and Harry Blackstone
Sr.

10. Mike Caveney Wonders & The Conference Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mike Caveney
Two
giant new books by Mike Caveney are now available after
four years of work. After spending three weeks trapped in
Customs, the books were released just in time to make their
debut at MAGIC Live in Las Vegas. Volume I is called Mike
Caveney Wonders and it contains all of the routines that
Mike has performed going back to his days as a teenage magician
in the Long Beach Mystics right up to his current act that
includes Magic Paper, The Bow & Arrow and Scissors,
Coat, Silverware & Chicken. More than just a How-To
book, it describes the creative process behind each routine.
450 pages printed in full color.
Volume
II is called The Conference Illusions. During the past twenty
years Mike has recreated a number of long-forgotten tricks
and illusions for the Los Angeles Conference on Magic History.
The book chronicles the research into the history of each
illusion, the original routines, how Mike attempted to improve
the mechanics of the apparatus, re-think the presentation
and design a routine that was suitable for a modern audience.
Each chapter includes vintage photographs and posters from
the files of Egyptian Hall Museum as well as behind-the-scenes
and action photos or the performances.
You
will learn, as Mike did, that there is much to be learned
from studying the magic created by the greatest minds of
magic's Golden Age. Volume II contains 250 pages printed
in full color.
Both
books are housed in a matching slipcase and packed in a
custom-printed cardboard shipping box. Additional details
can be found at www.mcmagicwords.com.

15. Auction Of The Kramien Show And Magic Collection - September
1.
--------------------------------------------
Message by David Charvet (US)
The
show and magic collection of veteran illusionist, Stan Kramien,
will be offered at auction on Sunday, September 1. David
Goodman, "The Magic Auctioneer" will be gaveling
the event. The auction includes classic illusions, stage
props, costumes, scenery, sound and lighting equipment,
books, posters, memorabilia and even a show truck and trailer!
Unlike other magic auctions, you will not find endless lots
of duplicate items found at other auctions. "We want
bidders to enjoy a fast-moving auction with unique items
that have been actually been used in performance by Kramien"
said Stan's son, Rick Kramien.
Among
the items to be sold includes a Cannon Illusion built by
the legendary Carl Owen for Mark Wilson and seen on both
the "Magic Land of Allakazam" and "The Magic
Circus" television shows. Kramien acquired the prop
from Wilson for Stan's last touring show, "Shazam!"
There are also many other props from builders such as John
Gaughan, Bill Smith, Abbott's Magic, John Pomeroy and more.
"There is truly something for everyone: the performer,
hobbyist or collector," said Kramien.
The
auction will take place at 10:00am PDT, Sunday, September
1, 2013 at the Kramien's Big Top Ranch Arena in Newberg,
Oregon - 45 minutes west of Portland. Online bidding from
around the world will also be accepted through Live Auctioneers.
Currently, bidders are registered from the U.S., Canada,
England, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangladesh,
Chile, Switzerland, and more. It will truly be an international
event.
The
night before the auction, on Saturday, August 31, the farewell
performance of Kramien's "Shazam!" show will be
staged at the Arena. Presented by long-time Kramien assistant
and friend, David Charvet, with the Kramien Company of Wonder
Workers, this show will feature many of the props that will
be auctioned the next day.
