For the attention of all Magic Collectors. Available, a very unique book published in UK in 1976 by Lewis, Bradshaw & Stone titled 'The Magic of Kaps'. There were only 12 copies ever printed. This is in perfect condition, and is hand signed and dated by Fred Kaps.

Included are a couple of additional signed Fred Kaps memorabilia items. For obvious reasons, this book is not available for sale very often. Serious Collectors only please should contact qualityevents@aol.com for more details.

The Linking Ring has the largest circulation of any magician's magazine. Members can access TLR at www.magician.org.

Stan Kramien, "The Tall Grass Showman", graces the cover for our August issue! Inside is a terrific story of Stan Kramien and his performances for over 35 years of one of the largest illusion shows in U.S. history written by David Charvet! You learn of his rise to the top from his first performances as a youth with numerous color photos of his shows, all the way up to his grand stage illusion shows! This is an article to relish!

Enjoy the results and pictures of The 85th Annual Convention of the I.B.M., 2013 in Phoenix this last July 17-20! Lance Burton, Jeff McBride, Dr. Larry Hass and Eugene Burger all participated in World Magic Teen Seminar! Wow! This was a very special event and the attendees were treated to advice from some of the best magicians in the world!

The magic world was stunned at the untimely death of one of the finest dove magicians in the world, Amos Levkovitch! He was not only a very creative and brilliant, world-class magician, but as my friends, Windy & Sunny (two of the real pioneers of dove magic!) told me that Amos was a superb dove magician and he actually learned many great ideas from Amos' act…ideas he had never thought of before!

Here's a great article! Magicland…More Than A Catalog! Many of us older guys out there will fondly remember the magic catalogs we got in the mail years ago, and thanks to Mr. Paul Osborne, we get to revisit this source of amazement and wonder!! The Douglas Magicland "brick and mortar" shop was a shop frequented by Mark Wilson himself! The catalogs were tomes of wild-eyed wonder as many of us sought to learn the secrets of great magic effects! This is a terrific article by Mr. Osborne!

From The Editor, the monthly article, by our own Linking Ring editor, Sammy Smith, addresses Loyalty to your act! I was surprised at Marty Hahne's "brush" with the law for NOT having a license to use a rabbit in his act! Many know of Marty's excellent articles of The Kid-Show Circuit. He was required to buy a license, paying an annual fee and submitting to random inspections by government agents to "protect" the well-being of the rabbit! This caused quite a bit of hassle for Marty…but he stuck to his guns…and ironically, this provided a huge amount of "free" publicity for him! He made lemonade out of lemons!

Cutting up Jackpots by Bev Bergeron presents Con Man At Sea World! I was disheartened to find out how the government (as in Sammy Smith's article above) has seen fit to intervene with performers by changing the rules in subversive attempts to "cripple" performers with more taxes and eliminating business expenses. Bev provides a detailed account of his disappointment with government intervention with his shows at Sea World and how he was "discontinued" due to the tax burden on Sea World and government greed!

Polishing The Rings by Skip Way discusses honest evaluations of other's performances and provides eight guidelines for improvement.

The London Eyes by Peter Scarlett has a fascinating article this month! He talks about the great magician Al Koran and his speech impediment and even provides the date and time of a BBC broadcast of The Secret Life of Uri Geller.

Business of the Show by Scott Humston offered readers with Beat the Band to the Show! This is a very important subject - the time before the show begins! This article discusses time of arrival, set-up and placement of your "stage".

Frequently Asked Questions is something new to TLR that is a terrific idea! Provided is a list of frequently asked questions and who or what to contact.

The Magic Section!

For those of you who love to learn new magic will be thrilled with the wonderful contributions of magic, fully explained, in the following columns below:

Harry Reeve presents TLR with his One- Man Parade! It's been 10 long years since his first Parade. Harry presents a wonderful variety of magical effects suitable for close-up or even cabaret and children's magic! He explains the Pateo Force in detail!

Terry Harris offers a One-Man Mini-Parade with six big effects! This is certainly a great month for magic! I was fascinated with his Four Paper Balls and Two Bowls…impromptu! Other items include Linking Ring magic and Himber Ring magic!

Mike Power's Card Corner - This month features Al Abers "An Adaptation of Karl Fulves' "One Second Flat"! This "exposure" of the secrets of professional gamblers is a lot of humor and fun with a surprise double ending!

Ways And Means by Joe M. Turner presents a wonderful routine by Dr. William Spooner called A Devious Card Enigma! This routine is exquisite! Learn many ideas that you can apply to your own magic!

Storytelling Magic by Ed Solomon - Another adventure of DeNomolos presents an excellent force and a coincidence effect that is very deceptive.

Hocus in Focus has a team of experts who review many new items of magic so that the magicians of the world may purchase wisely!

The Broken Wand pays a monthly tribute to our fellow performers who have passed and celebrates their lives rather than morn their passing.

There are too many items and too much magic in this issue of The Linking Ring for me to list, but everyone is world class!

I.B.M. members can access each issue on the I.B.M. Web Portal either by downloading the PDF or by reading the digital version.

Advertisers -- your products will enjoy unsurpassed worldwide promotion in The Linking Ring through the beautiful printed magazine, the dazzling digital edition, and links from the I.B.M. Web Portal.

Remarkable Magic #312. Conventions Galore

I am writing this column in my magic loft surrounded with books, boxes, DVDs, tricks, posters and stacks of other items packaged to go to the PCAM Convention in Burbank early on Thursday morning. There also seems to be enough food and drink to host 3 or 4 cocktail parties! I think we will have fun….

The PCAM (Pacific Coast Association of Magicians) is celebrating 80 years of presenting their convention. I am particularly happy to be launching our new magical product line there. The very first convention magic convention I was ever hired to lecture/perform at was the PCAM in the mid-seventies.

This year I will be limiting my performances to a 10-minute Dealers Show on Thursday night. However I haven't quite eliminated the idea of doing something weird or wonderful during the open mic night on Friday. It has been quite a few decades since I took part in an open mic occasion and it might be a bunch of fun to do something that no one might expect!

Being present at the PCAM Convention in Los Angeles also gives me the perfect reason to be in LA, play hooky for an evening and catch Bob Dylan in his Americanarama Summer Tour. I am excited to be attending the concert with my youngest daughter Katrina, who has been attending Dylan concerts with me throughout her entire life!

I like PCAM's decision to allow magicians to buy admission to most of the days, events and shows on an individual basis. They have an amazing line-up of talent including Max Maven, David Regal, Shawn Farquhar, Ice McDonald, Howard Hamburg, Rob Zabrecky, Paul Green, Andrew Goldenhersh, David Gabbay and Tim Mannix. The convention runs from August 1st-4th and if you want more details go to http://pcam2013.com for full details.

I am also looking forward to the rush of International magicians and excitement that Magic Live will bring to my hometown of Las Vegas from August 11th-14th. Stan Allen always does a great job with his convention and it is always a 'book your registration early' event, this year will be no exception. Full schedule and details of 'Magic Live 2013' can be found at http://www.magicmagazine.com/live/schedule.php

Looking ahead a few months I will be lecturing, performing and bringing my magic product line to a couple of other great conventions in the fall. The first will be at the '3 of Clubs Convention' in beautiful Vancouver November 8th-10th. If you want details about the convention then check them out online at http://www.ibmring92.com/tri-city-convention/

I have many good magical friends in the Tri-City area and was delighted to be able to reschedule the convention after missing it last year when I was trapped at sea during 'Superstorm Sandy.' This year I'm hoping to catch up with my cohort, colleague and buddy Paul Romhany who now resides in Vancouver.

In October I am featured at the MAES (Magicians Alliance of Eastern States) Convention in Cherry Hill, New Jersey on the 4th - 5th. This should be another great convention and I am looking forward to it very much. Full details can be found at http://www.maesonline.org

If you are attending any of these conventions please come up and say 'Hi,' it is always a real pleasure to meet up with some of my readers and get to meet them in person. One of the thrills of my semi-retirement as a professional performer is getting to add magic conventions to my schedule, and they are proving very successful and also a blast to perform.

I am currently locking in lecture and workshop dates for 2014 and if you are looking for a featured performer at your next event then let me know and we can check schedules…

8. Trouble with Kid's Names - #306 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

Here is an interesting scenario that may sound all too familiar to a lot of you. You are at an event and performing a routine that utilizes a child. The child comes up to a nice applause and you proceed to ask the child his or her name. The name that comes out from the child is one in which Klingon makes more sense. You ask the child again and you state the name wrong. This then provokes the child to become the Hulk and scream his name at the threshold of pain. You then resort to trying not to mention the child's name at all by simply dancing around it.

Sound familiar? I think we all have experienced this before. This is what I refer to as the "Trouble with Kid's Names" syndrome. There are many reasons why this may happen. It could be that the child is peaking too softly, not pronouncing the word correctly, you are having a hard time hearing the child or the fact that the name is just not common. As I get older, I have started to realize that the names of Mike, Chris and James have become boring and new names like Latoya and Iona have become the popular trend.

Because I am a deaf entertainer, I have problems hearing the kid's names and any helper that comes up on stage to assist. I read lips very well and have ever since a young child. However, reading kid's lips is harder because they do not pronounce the words as well as they should. Anyways, I have always had problems hearing kid's names when they come up to help. Because of this problem I was faced with, it allowed me to start coming up with creative solutions to solve it.

The solution...."Hello My name is" stickers. Sounds silly but it works wonderfully. Before the show starts I have them with me and I have the parents and the children put them on. In fact when I get there, I often give them to the client to hand out as kids come in.

I tell the client that it is an easy way for the kids to all get to know who each other and also so the ones who do not know, do not feel left out. It also is a great way for the adults to get to know each other as well. Often times the adults are meeting each other for the first time. I am also honest with them in that it makes it easier for me to select my helpers without mispronouncing a name.

They usually are more than pleased with this approach and sometimes wonder why they did not think of it themselves. They always help me out with it and I never have any problems. It then becomes super easy to spot kids in the audience. I can then call and select the child to come up by their name on their name tag. Kids love hearing their name called.

It can also play to a larger school or venue as well. Here is how you do it. You send the school a promotional show package a week or so ahead of time. This gets passed out to the teachers. Inside are the stickers. They are told to pass them out to their students before the show. It makes it easier.

Now if you really want to have fun with it, and want the kids to really WANT to wear them, place a number on each one. Then you can use it as a raffle at the show for a magic kit or something of value or importance.

Now if you are a savvy marketer, you can create your own customized name stickers. These can be printed easily and cheaply at many online digital printers. On these can have your website or contact information and your name. Now it becomes something that everyone is wearing that brands you at all times. People cannot help but look at it.

This becomes a very easy solution to a problem I was having due to my handicap. However, this solution can also help anyone out. Instead of trying to guess what the name is, you can handle it in such a way that adds both value to your show and also value to the client as well. I hope it helps you and that it can be a possible solution that elevates your magic.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

11. MINDvention Line-Up

Message by Danny Archer (US)

Paolo Cavalli has been added to MINDvention line-up! I must thank Thomas and Rainer of ParaLabs for helping bring this about. The addition of Paolo to an already star-studded line-up will help make the 10th MINDvention unforgettable.

Paolo Cavalli has long been a hidden secret in Mentalism. During his decades long journey, he has studied and practiced literally everything he could put his hands on in the field of Mentalism and the mystery arts.

During a period of almost two decades Paolo released several brilliant manuscripts, all of them highly recommended on regular basis by many 'big guns' in the community - and each new publication was eagerly awaited by the cognoscenti.

In the 2000's Paolo shared his wisdom as 'Lord of the Horses' in various online forums. So while he became increasingly well known in the community, he was still an enigma as no mentalist ever met him personally, knowingly … until now.

Paolo Cavalli has been a hidden secret in Mentalism - until now. The only place to see him will be at http://www.mindvention.com MINDvention.

Peace,

--------------------------------------------
Message by Greg Britt - Elgregoe (New Zealand)

We traveled all the way to Custer to see The Grand Magic Show with Duane Laflin Before we headed to Kidabra and Magic Live.

Well I can tell you it is worth the journey and family magic is alive and well in Custer.

What is really amazing is in a town of only 1400 they get a receptive audience each night made up from the huge number of tourists who visit the area. Well I could not believe the huge line up of amazing illusions way more than both I and the audience expected in fact I think the audience were taken by surprise as the following illusions made up a 90 minute fast paced show.

Flash appearance, phantom cage with 3 girls produced, Cub Zag, Elastic Lady, Duke Box Production, Mind Reading Colour Prediction, Dakolta Chair, Blammo Box, Duanes signature silk act, Sword Basket, Flower Productions, Body Slicer, Levitation, Screen Production, Duck Bucket and Duck Vanish, Thru a Funnel , Nest of Boxes, Chest of Mystery, Spiked Illusion and finished with a final production of the biggest dog I have seen a great Pyrenees.

Zak did a guest spot with vanishing bandana, funniest routine I have seen and Rhatt with a juggling act.

As you can see the Grand Magic show delivers more than expected and I recommend it to folk of all ages who may find themselves in Custer.

13. The Texas Association of Magicians Convention in Dallas
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mark Jensen

The Texas Association of Magicians Convention in Dallas this coming Labor Day weekend (Aug 30 - Sept 2) is really worth considering.

First, we are having several first time ever and several never to be repeated events. These include:

Tom Mullica, our Guest of Honor performing Duke for the first time in over 25 years and for the last time ever.

Chip Romero, who owns the world's largest collection of original Doug Henning Illusions will be presenting a special event: Doug Henning - The Man and His Magic

David Magee, the 2013 Merlin Award Winner for Mentalist of the Year will be hosting a panel discussion called Magic, Movies and a Cast of Characters. The Panelists include Johnny Thompson, Tom Mullica, Burton Gilliam (star of over 50 major motion pictures including Blazing Saddles and Back to the Future III) and one of the Baldwin Brothers (any guesses on which one???)

Allen Okawa will be performing at his first US Convention

Larry Hass will be presenting "McBride's Magic and Mystery School is now in Session - A Special Lecture"

Plus a few other surprises that I'm sure will have people talking (I'd tell you, but then what is a magic convention without some surprises).

Here are some of the fantastic performers and lecturers we are having:

Harry Anderson - Magic Castle Lecturer of the Year

Rob Zabrecky - 2 time Magic Castle Stage Magician of the Year

Fielding West - Merlin Award Winner

David Stone - New Lecture just for TAOM

Shin Lim

John Shryock

Jared Kopf

Fred & Bobbie Becker

Plus several more, check out our website: www.taom2013.com for more info.

I hope to see many of you there.
