2. After 60 Years Magicana" Magazine Comes To An End

Message by Michael Woolf
Managing Editor, "Magicana" Magazine

"Magicana" Magazine is in the mail to subscribers. Unfortunately this issue (Volume 60 No. 361) is the last print copy of the magazine.

"Magicana" has been published each two months for sixty years, the last thirteen years under my stewardship. Escalating costs and diminution of advertising have made it impossible to continue in this format.

"Magicana" has been running at a personal loss for several years and unfortunately I can't afford to subsidise the costs any longer. We hope for an Internet presence at a future date.

In this last issue Bernard Reid continues his epic History of Magic In New Zealand - (to be published in hardback book form next year) we have news from Arun Bonerjee in Indi,a an overview of ventriloquism by the Editor; David Ginn, Roderick Mulgan, Richard Webster GMM and Ian Adair contribute their regular columns.

There are book reviews by Andrew Wilson and Joel Moscowitz, an historical piece on Alchemy by Graham Martin; the Editor reports on the lecture by Kevin James and Jeff Hobson; Roderick Mulgan reviews "The Illusionists" and is joined by Malcolm Silverman to look at Electronics in Magic; Andrew Wilson and the Editor have a preview of the Palmerston North October Mini-Convention; there's a Report from the latest Meeting of IBM Ring 160; a Review of the televised promotional show by "The Illusionists" and by way of farewell this issue is dedicated to John Calvert.

I want to thank all who have contributed to "Magicana" over the years - a list of acknowledgements is printed in the magazine but it is not possible to name everyone. I will take this opportunity to thank Alan Watson for his friendship and support, and I hope to be able to return the proud name of "Magicana" in a different form in the future.

With thanks to all.

4. Blackstone Sr., CBS TV, 1956

Message by Walter Blaney (US)

Today I happily received from my friend David Charvet (author of the biographies of Jack Gwynne, Virgil and Willard the Wizard) this link to a 15 minute video of Harry Blackstone Sr., on stage in his prime, in a big theater (later named the Ed Sullivan Theater). It was a national CBS TV show in 1956, with a live audience.

That was very early TV..... Black and White, rather poor camera work, poor sound, and filmed way before there was videotape. Yet with so little good tape of Blackstone Sr., this is still the best I have seen. What a thrill to see the master at work, the way I remember him live on stage at the Majestic Theater in Dallas, Texas in 1940 when I was just 12.

Blackstone Sr. was my boyhood idol and the main inspiration to my becoming a magician.

It was dubbed for David by Bill Larsen Jr. 20 years ago from The Magic Castle archives. As David wrote me, "Enjoy the trip down memory lane"

Magician Turns $1 Into $100 for the Homeless in This Touching Video

Stuart Edge isn't your average magician. Instead of death-defying David Blaine antics, his magic tricks have much more heartwarming results.

The YouTube do-gooder and prankster sought out people in need in Provo and Orem, Ut., taking $1000 out of his own savings to make the days of 10 different people. For the video, Edge performs a trick in which he switches a $100 bill in his closed fist with a $1 bill in another person's closed fist, leaving the participant grateful and amazed.

If it's summer then it it's 'Dry Heat' time in the desert!

Once again it is nearly time for one of the years truly fun events-The Dry Heat Classic. The 11th 12th and 13th of July are the dates for 'The 17th Annual Dry Heat Classic Golf Tournament and All-Star Comedy Review.' It will feature all the fun and spectacular entertainment that makes it such a wildly successful and enjoyable event each year.

The event is brought to you by The Michael Finney Foundation, and has resulted in nearly a million dollars being raised for a variety of great causes over the years. The event is planned, produced and hosted by one of the nicest teams in magic Michael Finney and his wife Lori SooHoo Finney. They do a truly amazing job of making it fun to be part of such a worthwhile event.

Once again the event will be held at the beautiful Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino in Chandler, Arizona. The beautiful showroom there will be the venue for the various shows associated with the event. This year the 'Dry Heat' has a 60s theme that warms the heart of an old hippie like me. Finally a chance to wear one of my many headbands in public without worrying that I might be considered to be doing an Amazing Johnathan impression!

As always the tournament will kick off with a Gala Celebrity Chef's Dinner/Silent & Live Auction. I was there two years ago and can still taste the cornucopia of exotic dishes prepared by some of the finest restaurants and chefs in the Phoenix area. There were great items in the auction and we ended up the delighted owners of a beautifully framed and signed David Copperfield photo for the wall of my magic loft.

Friday and Saturday the actual Golf Tournament takes place at the Southern Dunes Golf Club and Whirlwind Golf Club. The evenings are devoted to two great comedy and magic shows at the 'Ovations Live' Showroom back at the Wild Horse Pass Resort. As always the performers are a 'Who's Who' from the entertainment world. These shows are also open to the public for the modest ticket price of $25.

The two headliners of these two comedy concerts are Ritch Shydner and comedy legend Gary MuleDeer. I have worked with Ritch in the past and on any given day he may well be one of the funniest comics in America. As for MuleDeer -well, I may be one of his biggest fans and in spite of having seen his act numerous times I am already in overdrive about seeing it again. If you have never seen Gary perform you are in for a treat.

There are numerous other performers slated to appear in these two shows including, Larry Wilson, Rick Michel, Jim O'Brien, Kenton Knepper, Jack Mayberry, Bruce Baum, Luna Shimada, Fielding West, Kenny Bob Davis, Stephen Bargatze, Oscar Munoz, Nate Bargatze, David Gee, Scott Henry, Tom Parks, Denny Johnston, Greg Wilson and a host of others. Oh, and I'll be up there onstage myself!

'The 17th Annual Dry Heat' takes place just a few days before the kick off for the IBM Magic Convention in Phoenix and is a special added bonus for convention goers who arrive in town a little early. One of the many things that Michael and Lori really 'do right,' is the fact that separate tickets can be purchased for most of the separate functions and events.

I would draw your attention to Michael's website www.michaelfinney.com which will give you details, times and prices for the various events. The number of the Ticket Box Office is 1.800.946.4452 extension 7370.

Buy that new tie-dye tee shirt you know you really want, put on your headband and be a part of this groovy event that has done so much for great causes in the last 16 years. Be there or be square!

7. Festivals and Low Budgets - #301 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron

So what happens if you market to a festival and they are interested but keep telling you that they have a "limited" or a "low" budget? The first thing to realize is that they may be telling you the truth. The best avenue to take is to not assume that they are trying to get something for nothing.

As a professional, it is your job to work with them and engage them in conversation. Ask them to tell you what their needs are for the event and what they are looking for. By doing this, you are getting them to start conversation so that you can listen and lock in on those needs. It also begins to show them your worth and the value you can add to their event.

So by doing this first I can weed out those who really may not have a large budget or I can find out if by chance they stated that because they were not sure who I am or why I am different than anyone else. My goal is to show value to them and get them to see me as someone who can offer them something others simply cannot. This starts with great customer service.

Another thing you want to be aware of is if they state a low budget before you get a chance to tell them what you offer. You want to always offer festivals multiple packages that are based upon a tiered system of pricing. I usually offer 3 package types for festivals and each one is structured in such a way to allow any festival of any size to be able to have me and still fit their budget needs.

So if they mention low budget, start to let them know you understand their needs and that is why you have developed different packages to address the needs of festivals like theirs. This gets their interest and they will like the fact that you are willing to work with them.

If they still have a budget issue after seeing your package and price options, there may be ways that you can still offer them a show at a reduced day rate. Instead of doing 2 shows you may decide to only do 1 show and reduce the price. Instead of doing 2 hours of strolling magic, you can suggest a single hour for a reduced fee.

I also learn to listen well because I can often barter an agreement for those festivals that may really want me but may not have the funding or the sponsorships available.

For example, I can often times get them to give me a large vendor space and an awning, chairs and table for FREE.

This way I can have a full day BOR table for the entire festival and not have to pay for it. The idea is to never reduce your fee unless you are getting something back from them. They have to realize that you have value and your time is money. By lowering a price but still giving them exactly the same thing, you decrease your value.

However if you do barter make sure that it goes both ways. This means that if you offer a shorter show etc. then they should give something back in return. To simply do a shorter show without anything from them, is not bartering and does not benefit you.

Some of the ways you can work events like this are:

They get a sponsor for you: This means that the sponsor pays your fee to be there and not the festival. In return for the sponsorship, you agree to mention their name throughout the show, they get a booth or table near your show area and the festival committee agrees to do advertising for the sponsor at the festival in the way of banners, ads, and flyers.

A shorter show vs. free stuff from them: This means that you offer a shorter show or a shorter number of shows in return for a free booth space all day as well as free advertising throughout the festival. I have done this before and it can work. You just must get a contract out to make sure that both parties agree upon the conditions and promise to do what is agreed upon. If you are selling BOR, a short 20 minute show would be more than fair in return for a full day's booth space. You will have to see what your show and time is worth though.

Grants: They get the funds through a grant they can obtain. There are many grants available and open for communities. Some forget that they are available. If you mention it to them, it is another way in which they can look into it and a better chance of them being able to receive the funds to pay for your services.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. Magic - Art, Craft or Neither - Part 15
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone - USA/Europe

At the beginning of this series, I mentioned that I would be including thoughts & musings from various guests who have kindly shared their perspectives. Last week we published the first Part of Michael Lauck's article in: iTricks.com . This week we publish Part 3 of Michael Lauck's article.

Michael Lauck is a freelance writer, illustrator and producer who has been involved in magic since childhood. A former semi-professional magician, he has discovered he prefers behind the scenes over the spotlight. Michael writes material for other performers and regularly for iTricks.com. His recent article there made a number of salient points regarding this topic. Both Michael and the folk at iTricks.com have kindly given their permission to share his words. This is the 3rd installment.

Michael Lauck is a Professor and The Archivist for Camelard College. I am honored to serve alongside him as a Faculty Member and Full Professor. The Camelard College of Conjuring of Chemmis, the world's only international Honor Society for accomplished women and men magicians, as well as those in the Allied Magical Arts.

Michael Lauck www.horizonmonster.com

iTricks writer Michael Lauck explains why there is a wealth of context to the question, "is magic art?"

Part 3 of 3 follows below:-

Art is a powerful thing. It transcends time and culture. Today, someone will visit the Louvre in Paris and weep in the presence of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, even though five centuries (and probably a language) separate the artist from the audience.

A listener will have their mood altered by an opera performed in a language they do not even understand. Dancers will tell stories that completely enthrall their comprehending audiences without even a single word and sometimes even without music! Magic, on its own, does not have this power.

Magic is a tool that a successful actor uses to complete a performance. I am, of course, not the first person to suggest that the performing magician is in actuality an actor. The phrase, attributed to Robert-Houdin,"A magician is an actor playing the part of a magician" may be the most oft-repeated and oft-ignored statement on the theory of magic performance. If we reduce magic to its purest form, removing the other arts such as acting, dance and music what remains? The techniques we use, the sleight of hand or mechanisms used to physically create our effects. This is magic… it is not art, it is artisan. It is a craft. Add that craft to the dramatic arts of acting and then Art can be created (an, perhaps, "real" magic of a sort).

Consider for a moment the difference between dozens of technically proficient but boring card or cigarette manipulation videos on YouTube and Cardini. The artist Cardini tells a story that is enhanced with magic. Take the magic away and Cardini could still entertain with his pantomime alone, he can still tell a story and create an emotional bond with his audience. The reverse is not true. Magic on its own is perhaps surprising or shocking at best and is probably merely a puzzle. It is a skill that can make a magician seem to defy the laws of science and nature.

However, without that same magician performing something beyond that skill, such as acting or singing, magic is a curiosity. This is why there are not degrees in magic being offered at the colleges and universities that train painters, musicians and actors.

The magician can be an artist and create Art. The magician can create a bond with audiences and lead them to experience a variety of emotions through his performance but only when he uses the craft of magic to enhance the story being presented through dance or song or drama. So I implore all magicians reading this not to leave insulted that their beloved art is merely a craft but instead embrace the fact that you can indeed create Art. Use magic for what it is and grow as a performer. Remember the most important words of Robert-Houdin: "The magician is an actor…."

I was much honored to receive this amazing letter from our feature story Mark and Nani Wilson. It's something I'd like to share with everybody as it really touched everybody at Vanish.

"Hi Paul,
The magazine is terrific. Nani, Greg and I thank you so much for publishing the article by Nick Lewin and Mike King. They both wrote beautiful words. And of course, none of this would have happened, including the magazine itself, without the amazing and revolutionary efforts of Paul Romhany.

As I said on the phone, your efforts are leading the international world of magic into a new era, particularly when we realize that none of this could have happened only a few years ago. There have been many developments in the art of magic over the succeeding centuries.... From witch doctors, to performances in town squares, in theaters throughout the world and then, as it became possible, on television.

In recording the history of magic, it will be written that this latest advance was led by Vanish magazine, leading to the vast expansion and elevation of the art of magic, which, thanks to you gentlemen, is definitely on the way.

Happy Magic!
