Great to see that the New Zealand Herald is now using an online chat as part of their news services.

This week it featured 'What I do' live chat: Magician Mick Peck.

It's wonderful that traditional newspapers are embracing technology and that New Zealand magicians are making use of it.

Four Shows Open To The Public - Convention Honors D.C. Magician Al Cohen.

The annual Society of American Magicians Conference comes to Arlington, July 3-4-5-6 at the Marriott Hotel Crystal Gateway. The convention expects to bring 1000 Magicians and their families from around the world to Arlington for contests, workshops and meetings. Magicians will have a dealer trade show, lectures and gala shows.

"Al's Magic Shop" in Washington closed in 2002 after 55 years of serving magicians and the public. Proprietor Al Cohen will be honored by the Society at this convention. He sold magic tricks to both amateurs and professional performers who made Washington DC a "Mecca" of magic. His favorite customer was President George H.W. Bush who often stopped in to visit and buy a few pranks. The "National Gift Shop" on Pennsylvania Avenue changed its name in the 1940's. Al often performed a spoof magic act as "Pernell Zorch" and was a popular corporate performer in the District which honored him in October of 1984 with "Al Cohen Day."

Four of the convention shows will be open to the general public. All will be held at the Marriott Hotel Crystal Gateway grand ballroom.

5. Remarkable Magic #304 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Some shameless self-promotion.

I decided to share a few items about my future goals this week. Generally speaking I try to minimalize my self-promotion but I'm going to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about the exciting things that are happening in my life. I am happily entering a semi-retirement and somehow seem just as busy as ever, just doing different things! Here is what is happening….

Just over a year ago I set up a company (Lewin Enterprises) to market a line of magical products. Like most other performers who are starting to slow down their performance schedule, I decided to market some of the knowledge and routines that have served me well over the last 40 years. If a fully-fledged Pro can't speed up your learning curve--- who can?

I had some definite ideas about how I thought this business should be conducted. I was determined only to market routines that were tried and tested in the red-hot glow of actual performance. No pipe dreams or half thought out ideas. I wanted the items I sold to be practical and commercial and everything manufactured and released in the highest quality manner possible.

In the past 12 months I have released two books, a DVD, lecture notes and one trick. I am delighted to say that with NO advertising and very little promotion, I am about 3 years ahead of where I thought I would be. Not only have sales been great but everyone who has purchased these items seem to have been very pleased with them. Now I am going to take it several steps further.

I currently have 24 items ready to go into production and an ambitious schedule to release 13 of these items in the next 12 months. During this summer I will be unveiling three new items; a genuinely show stopping mind reading routine 'Mental Trilogy,' and a great close-up routine that re-sets itself for roving magicians called 'Ultimate Card In Envelope' kick of the list. I am also extremely excited to say I am releasing one of the most practical items you can imagine 'The Ultimate Microphone Holder.' If you perform in public then you need this item.

Following the arrival of these three items I will be releasing DVD's of my handling for the 'Ultimate Slow Motion Newspaper Tear,' and the 'Ultimate Half Gypsy Thread.' A strong Cards Across routine and killer color change silk prop/handling will follow. By the end of the year I will have released my signature 'Ultimate Borrowed Bill Routine,' which has more surprises and twists than you can imagine. These are all tried and tested routines that have been a huge part of my highly successful show.

In order to keep this schedule going and the quality of the props as high as my personal goals require, Susan (Mrs. Nick) and I are delighted to welcome a new team member to work with us. His name is Rolando Medina and he is a master craftsman and manufacturer. Along with our dear friend and designer Steve Mitchell, this will be the core of our company. It is a great group of people I am proud and excited to be working with.

I invite you, my readers, to join us on this new journey. I pledge to keep very high standards and try and be a real credit to some of the magic suppliers/teachers that have helped inspire me to make this decision. Magic has been very good to me and I have earned a great living since my teenage years and I believe I will be able to add significantly to the repertoire of magicians.

You can keep track of new releases via my website www.nicklewin.com and my blog www.remarkablemagic.com and of course my contributions in this and other magic publications. You may also feel free to contact me directly at nicklewin1@mac.com

This article marks the 300th article I have written to date since my start here as a columnist for the Magic NZ Ezine. I just wanted to take this column as a chance to say thank you to many and to share some insights with you all.

I am still absolutely thrilled and humbled that I got a chance to write even one article for Alan's ezine. When he asked me, I honestly did not see any reason for him to run it. I just wrote a response to a beginner magician. Alan felt it was written well and really conveyed a lot of information others might like to hear. I took his word for it and I am glad I did.

I seriously thought that would have been a one and done deal. One article and move onward doing something else. I was shocked when he asked me to write again…and again…and again. 300 articles later, I am still at it.

It is amazing to even myself that I seem to still have things to talk about and ideas to share with you all. I cannot thank you all enough for the countless emails, phone calls and comments I have received over the years regarding things I have written about. It does mean the world to me.

It is always my goal to make a person think or to get them thinking in new ways or spark an idea of their own. Everything I write about is from my own personal experiences. Many of them are even from my own mistakes of which I have learned from. If I can perhaps prevent someone from making the same mistakes, I will always try.

What I am most proud of is the fact that I have been able to do all of this as a deaf entertainer. Growing up with severe hearing loss was not easy. School was most challenging and English was next to impossible. I just never understood it well and I certainly hated writing.

Each time I get to write an article, it makes me smile and makes me realize how far I have come and the magic I have been able to make in myself.

Thank you all so very much for the opportunity to write for you and I look forward to many years ahead.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. Magic - Art, Craft or Neither - Part 14
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone - USA/Europe

At the beginning of this series, I mentioned that I would be including thoughts & musings from various guests who have kindly shared their perspectives. Last week we published the first Part of Michael Lauck's article in: iTricks.com . This week we publish Part 2 of Michael Lauck's article.

Michael Lauck is a freelance writer, illustrator and producer who has been involved in magic since childhood. A former semi-professional magician, he has discovered he prefers behind the scenes over the spotlight. Michael writes material for other performers and regularly for iTricks.com. His recent article there made a number of salient points regarding this topic. Both Michael and the folk at iTricks.com have kindly given their permission to share his words. This is the 2nd installment.

Michael Lauck is a Professor and The Archivist for Camelard College. I am honored to serve alongside him as a Faculty Member and Full Professor. The Camelard College of Conjuring of Chemmis, the world's only international Honor Society for accomplished women and men magicians, as well as those in the Allied Magical Arts.

Michael Lauck www.horizonmonster.com

iTricks writer Michael Lauck explains why there is a wealth of context to the question, "is magic art?"

Part 2 follows below:-

Finally, I submit to you a quote from famed novelist Leo Tolstoy who wrote in his essay "What is Art?" that Art "is a means of union among men, joining them together in the same feelings, and indispensable for the life and progress toward well-being of individuals and of humanity." It seems that the commonality in these definitions is an emotional aspect. I submit that Art is created when the work has an ability to engender emotions in the audience. It is not enough to be merely attractive, pleasant or entertaining; Art does more.

Let me be clear: not every piece of artwork that creates an emotion is Art. Art must create the same or similar emotions in the majority of audiences exposed to it. Therefore, a crude painting from that third grade art class mentioned earlier is not Art simply because it makes the artist's mother cry! Neither is a photograph of long lost family members Art simply because their descendants feel an emotional connection. These instances are too specific, too personal to be truly considered Art. Similarly, even an earnest attempt to create Art fails if it does not stir emotion in an audience.

Much more After The Jump!

If we can accept this working definition for Art then we can more easily understand what constitutes "the arts." These are the pursuits that create Art, that engender emotion in their audience. Is magic an art? No, I say, it is not. I know that others will argue that a magic performance can create emotion, they may even cite specific performers and their routines. To confuse matters temporarily, I will agree that magicians can be artists that their performances can be Art without magic being an art.

Part 2 of 3 … to be continued next week

Message by Adrian Smith (South Africa)
Can anyone please help with a copy instructions for this card effect called "Anttack"

Basic effect is that a swarm of ants appear printed on a chosen card of witch the spectator drew a drawing of sweet on the face of card. The card is then taped on rest of deck and real plastic little ants fall off card into spectators hands.

I received effect from estate with no instructions? Even wrote to the inventer and he told me he has no more copies or back up files.

If anyone can scan and email me a copy to magic@themagician.co.za

11. Alan Shaxon's Outstanding 'Confabulation Deluxe'
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

I have recently received several requests for Alan Shaxon's outstanding 'Confabulation Deluxe', and I'm delighted to say that we've just received a new batch of 24 of this wonderful effect.

It is without doubt one of the strongest and most commercial Cabaret and stand up effects in magic. For a limited time only, I will also include the Confabulation DVD which features Alan explaining his set up and handling, and two 'live' performances of his signature trick.

The quality of the props is first class and both the wallet and notepad are made in the highest quality leather. We won't be making any more of these for a while, so I highly recommend that if you are interested, you should order whilst these are available.

There hasn't been a Gold Medal winner since 2005 or a Gold Cups winner since 2003. You want it? Come and take it! We don't just give it away!

Space is available for advertising or other messages in our Souvenir Convention Program. Ads are due by June 14. Ad rates are available on our website - www.magician.org - go to the convention page and click on the advertising button at the bottom of the page.

We have a link on our convention page at http://www.magician.org/portal/en/node/6 to make your reservation.

If you've been reading the articles in The Linking Ring, then you know we have an informative, fun and magical convention planned for you. Besides the lectures, shows, dealers and demonstrations that you can find at any magic convention, we have some very unique events for you that you won't find anywhere else!

Don't miss the:

Lance Burton Teen Seminar - A special pre-convention event for our young magicians ages 13-19. This event will begin at 7:00pm on Monday, July 15 and run through lunch on Wednesday, July 17. This unique event featuring Lance Burton, Jeff McBride and Eugene Burger will also have guest lectures and sessions from Shawn Farquhar, Oscar Munoz, Larry Haas and Bryce Kuhlman.

The best news - there is no extra charge for this event if you are registered for the convention. There will also be special activities just for the youth throughout the convention. Our challenge to you is to take this opportunity to work with the greatest teachers in magic and bring your magic to the next level. This is an exclusive I.B.M. only event - it may be "free" but it is priceless!!!

Dry Heat Classic 2013 - Michael Finney has scheduled his annual golf tournament for the weekend immediately preceding our convention. This event will be hosted at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino. You'll be glad you did!

I.B.M. Magic Film Festival - Only at the I.B.M. will you see three very different and unique prize winning magic movies followed by panel discussions afterwards featuring the stars and producers of the films. We are highlighting the award winning movie Make Believe - a coming of age movie about six young magicians competing for the title of World Teen Champion; Desparate Acts Of Magic - a movie about dreams of becoming a professional magician and competing for the chance to launch a career - Note: production of this film actually began at the 2010 I.B.M. Convention in San Diego; and Play Dead: The Movie - written by Todd Robbins and Teller, this film is based on Todd Robbins' the successful New York spook show of the same name. Three great films; three nights of magical entertainment!

The convention begins with an evening meal and cabaret entertainment from our stars at a spacious Chinese Restaurant, China Town on Cuba St, on Saturday evening 26th October.

A full day of lectures follows on Sunday 27th ending with a Gala Show also open to the public at 7.30 p.m. in The Speirs Centre, the Arts Centre for Palmerston North High School. Monday morning will conclude proceedings with a last visit to the dealers and the Bring and Buy tables.

Early Bird Registration by the 6th September will cost $90 for magicians and $50 for wives, partners, students and parents of students. This includes Sunday's refreshments at morning and afternoon tea and a Gala Show Ticket. Late registrations after 7th September will be $120 and $70. You may pre-register with a 50% deposit. Cheques should be made out to 'Joe Monti PNMC Convention' and there will be a direct debit account number soon.

Our convention hotel is The Travelodge, 175 Cuba St which offers a convention deal of $105 for a double room per night. $141 would include a full breakfast for two.
