2. New Trailer for Magician Heist Flick 'Now You See Me'
--------------------------------------------
Article forward on David Taylor (US)

Gamer
The
second trailer for the upcoming heist flick, Now You See
Me, was released late last week. The film has flown under
the radar as anticipation for Iron Man 3 (watch the trailer)
reaches a zenith. But Now You See Me features a solid cast
and a fairly original concept. The trailer does an excellent
job of pulling at the heart strings of the downtrodden,
adding lots of impressive stunts to keep the mood light.
Think
of it as an altruistic magician edition of 2001's Ocean's
11. A group of magicians known as the Four Horsemen goes
rogue, stealing millions from the corrupt and giving it
to members of their audiences. At one point, they steal
$140 million from an overseas bank. FBI Agent Dylan Hobbs,
portrayed by The Avengers' Mark Ruffalo, is tasked with
taking them down before they can pull off their biggest
stunt to date.
But
Hobbs has a hard time determining what is real and what
is trickery and whom he can trust. Clearly the group is
working with someone else. Could it be Hobbs's new partner,
attractive Interpol agent Alma Vargas (Melanie Laurent)
or consultant/magic debunker Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman)?
Michael
Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) leads the group of misfits, which
includes Jack (Dave Franco), Merritt Osbourne (Woody Harrelson)
and Henley (Isla Fisher). The heist flick is directed by
Louis Leterrier, known for his work on the first two installments
of the Transporter series.
Now
You See Me will hit the silver screen on May 31.

The
Linking Ring has the largest circulation of any magician's
magazine. Members can access TLR at www.magician.org.
Nimrod
Harel graces the cover of this month's issue of TLR! Nimrod
is a magician turned "mentalist" and is one of
Israel's most popular performers.
His
inside story titled, Nimrod Harel, Perception Artist, written
by assoc. editor, Jason Goldberg, is a study of his performance
perception of Mentalism and his transition from standard
magic. One of his influences is Uri Gellar, famed mentalist
from Israel - but Nimrod feels that his form of Mentalism
has evolved from this style and provides readers with three
distinct phases of evolution. Very interesting material
for those who wish to pursue a career in Mentalism and also
how mentalists can command an "extra zero" in
their paychecks! It is also very interesting how Nimrod
can employ techniques from magic to produce a very believable
mentalism program!
Organizers
of this year's The 2103 I.B.M. Convention in Phoenix this
July 17-20 have provided "Eleven Reasons to be in Phoenix
This July"! There are some very nice guides for enjoying
this monster of a Convention and some of the stars of magic
who are slated to mingle with participants!
There
is a "Dry Heat Golf Classic" produced by Michael
Finney, a Lance Burton Teen Seminar, an I.B.M. film fest,
I.B.M. contests, dealers, events, etc.!
Scott
Hood explains how to get involved in the I.B.M. Hospital
Show program.
Cliff
Baumgardner reviews the new Ricky Jay film that opened in

From
The Editor, the monthly article, by our own Linking Ring
editor, Sammy Smith, addresses Four Ways To Handle Stress!
This is a great idea! Sammy provides us with methods of
stress and activity management. Very important topics for
us all!
Cutting
Up Jackpots by Bev Bergeron presents readers with a wonderful
story of how Bev helped a dying boy from Michigan get his
dying wish of attending Disney World and the "strings"
he pulled to make this trip the best of his life!
Bev
went out of his way to make arrangements for this little
boy and with the help of the wonderful members of Orlando's

The
Kid-Show Circuit by Marty Hahne discusses "Ethics in
Magic" - specifically, magicians attending the shows
of other magicians. Professional courtesy is a topic not
often addressed and is a very important one for magicians
to know and learn!
Polishing
The Rings by Skip Way relates the tedium of teaching magic...or
anything else to children and he presents many methods of
"Creating Champions Through Games"! That's right...you
heard it! Skip has some excellent methods of not only taking
the drudgery out of learning - but actually providing incentives
and focus to the youths!

in the following columns below:
Paul

the creator of Illusion Systems which helps the home craftsmen
construct illusions and many magical props on their own!
He teaches readers Card Sword repairs, an easy method to
construct "Poof Tacos" for your Dove pan productions,
how to refinish Bottles for your Multiplying Bottles set
or your Passé-Passé Bottles! Also some great
ideas for "Drink Pours", building an inexpensive
Rising Card From Hat, The Double Wand Wonder, Magic Tables
and other great ideas for building a terrific act on your

Michael
Thomas presents a One-Man Mini-Parade with NINE more big

with a terrific trick he calls "Four Dice and Two Little
Hats!" This is a rendition of Marlo's effect and is
a beauty! Michael has really "tipped his hat"
with all nine of these wonderful effects!
Mike
Power's Card Corner - This month features yet another nice
effect by John Neely which is a variation of my own effect,
"Name Any Card", and is quite a clever rendition
that he calls, "Name Any Card Again!" This effect
is a very strong one and easy to do!
Ways

5. Remarkable Magic #298 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
A
fun mental exercise.
I
hope I'm not turning scholarly! It did occur to me that
it would be a fun experiment to have all my readers to take
part in a little experiment. It is a neat mental manipulation
of neurons, designed to shake things up a bit, and maybe
give a boost to your act. The only side effect is that it
might affect your complacency.
One
of the many nuggets of wisdom I ponder upon in the Bible
(AKA 'McCombs Magic: 40 years Wiser') is the tiny hint about
combining two tricks into one effect. It's only a couple
of pages long, the essay in question---but I have found
much wisdom therein. I suggest you seek it out and read
it carefully.
It
is sometime in the early 80s, I get a call from the talent
agent booking 'The John Davidson Show,' "Got a trick
that will work with the theme of 'Hill Street Blues?"
he asked. "Of course I do - the perfect one!"
I lied in response. "OK, we tape tomorrow afternoon."
He concluded. I was already panicking.
I
went to that little chapter in 'McComb's Magic' and read
Billy's priceless advice and the routine that he illustrated
it with. The routine (when I finished with it) involved
a card in wallet, a set of linking rings, a tambourine and
a pair of thumbcuffs. I rehearsed the routine, taped it
the next day and have used it on occasions ever since.
I
then did a little thinking about this 'two for one' approach
to magic, and how much it strengthens the performer's show.
I combined two of my favorite tricks into one routine and
it was a smash. There was something very special at work
here, I might not have known the word at the time but it
was 'synergy'.
Since
that first discovery of linking two routines together, I
have allowed this philosophy to color my entire performing
repertoire. It achieves surprise, originality and unique
results, even when performed with very familiar tricks and
effects. You can use the same pieces of the jigsaw puzzle
to create a different picture. To put it another way, I
can work on a cruise ship following 6 other magicians, do
the same tricks and make people forget they have already
watched something very similar.
Here
is where the mental experiment comes in, sit down comfortably
and with pencil and paper or pixels make a list of the various
tricks that you can perform in a pretty decent manner. Don't
write much down - just the name of the tricks.
When
you have completed the list - sit and stare at it, for a
while. Keep your mind as blank as possible and gradually
try and see if any of those tricks seem to gravitate towards
each other in your mind. Maybe because of the props they
use or even just the way they hit an audience when you perform
them. Just mull things over in your mind.
The
ideal solution you are looking for is almost an equation:
Perform a trick, add another trick and allow each trick
to improve the other in some way. You should end up doing
more magic in less time - a great goal for this day and
age.
Next
make out a new, much shorter list that combines the names
of those tricks you have united mentally. See if you can
find two or three such pairs of tricks, then spend a few
days running this new list through your mind. Notice if
anything exciting bubbles up to the surface, it certainly
has for me over the years. If the experiment doesn't work
initially then repeat it - eventually it will work.
If
you have any brainstorms and want to share them, email me
at nicklewin1@mac.com
I have some great products and videos online. Check them

6. Networking at Festivals - #295 - Kyle Peron

One
of the best things you can do at any festival is the ability
to network. Not only network with people in the audience,
but network with the vendors as well as fellow entertainers
that you may be sharing the stage with.
Let
me give you an example of how I go about it and how easy
this can become for you.
When
doing a festival in the past, we were set up on one street
section off of the main road. My goal was to get people
and more traffic down our street and so I started making
more announcements about the shows we are performing and
it started to get people interested. It certainly did work.
But,
what I also did was to make announcements and talk about
the vendors that were all near me. I mentioned them by name
and told people to go and see these vendors and then stop
by and watch a free magic show for the entire family.
In
this process I could not believe how many of the vendors
came over to personally thank me for doing that for them.
I certainly did not have to do that and they all thanked
me time and again for taking the time to help them out as
well.
This
did several things for me:
-
I made really great friends with the people around me. This
made it easier for me later on when I needed to move my
car in for loading and unloading. People were much more
helpful and did not mind because they knew me.
-
It allowed me to really get the chance to talk to these
people and network. From just doing this, I met 3 vendors
and got e-mails from all of them. We are now in the process
of sharing each other's festival and contact list information.
This is a HUGE benefit as a lot of these people work the
festival circuit as well and they have inside information
that can be very valuable.
-
One of the other great benefits was the fact that I made
friends with several of the food vendors. This was key as
the day was 90 in the shade and I was offered free drinks,
fries, smoothies and even a bag of kettle popcorn. All of
this was offered to me for FREE just because I was kind
enough to think of them as well.
So
bottom line is I realized the importance of getting to know
your vendors near you when at any festival event. You can
gain so much useful information and it really can benefit
you in numerous ways.
You
are on a stage and have a LOT of power. You have a mic system
and speakers. So when you are making your announcements
simply make sure the people come on over and stop by the
vendors near you and take part in their food and crafts
and then see your show.
You
give them a totally FREE advertisement and mention the vendors
by name. I am telling you this will instantly have these
vendors coming over to you, thanking you and shaking your
hand. You will also quite often get told if you want or
need any free drinks or food, to just simply ask. They do
this in exchange for the free ads your providing to them.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. Magic - Art, Craft Or Neither
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone - USA/Europe
At
the beginning of this series, I mentioned that I would be
including thoughts & musings from various guests who
have kindly shared their perspectives. This week I am delighted
to continue to welcome Ivonne Perez Montijo
For
just over 3 decades, has been active in Film & TV. She
is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has also written
and produced independent short films and theatrical productions.
Her "day job" has been as "Pinky the Clown",
performing magic and entertaining young children all over
Los Angeles. Ivonne has a B.A. in Spanish Literature with
a minor in Theatre & Film from U.C.L.A. and a M.A. in
Religious Studies from C.S.U.L.B.
She
is currently studying music theory, piano, and guitar at
Long Beach City College. Ivonne is first and foremost a
writer and a story teller. She has written numerous poems
over the years and her work can be found on
:-www.ivonnemontijo.wordpress.com.
I
have not read all her written work but from the writings
that I have perused, it is indeed praiseworthy. Her conceptual
thinking and phraseology are superb. I have publicly stated
that some aspects of her work flow in a similar vein to
Kahlil Gibran. She is also currently developing her thesis,
"Mary Magdalene: Beloved Wife and Disciple of Jesus
of Nazareth" into a book. I am eagerly looking forward
to this as the topic has interested me for some 50 years.
She also has a page dedicated to inspiring thoughts on Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/ForTheLoveOfYou.April2012
For
reasons that will become apparent as you read the following
words, I am both deeply appreciative and delighted that
she responded to my request to contribute to the topic.
Of necessity, The Editor and I have chosen to publish it
in installments over the next few weeks.
The
Art of Magic - Part 4
By Ivonne Perez Montijo, M.A.
In the 1850's Robert-Houdin, the father of modern magic
combined magic, religion and politics to stop a simmering
war. The country of Algeria was rebelling led by the Marabouts,
a religious sect with supposedly magical powers. They wanted
the country to break its ties to France. By request of the
French bureau in Algiers, Robert-Houdin, was asked to prove
that French magic was stronger than that of the Marabouts.
Performing for the local chieftains, Robert-Houdin caused
a warrior to seemingly lose his strength. By suggesting
that the warrior could no longer lift a lightweight box,
the warrior couldn't. And at the end, the warrior shrieked
and ran from the stage. He was secretly shocked with a jolt
of electricity. The rebellion was effectively quelled by
Robert-Houdin who was acting in the role of
shaman/magician.
These
representations were elements of religious/spiritual rituals
performed for the community. Religious ritual paved the
way for the development of theatre. The shaman or the magician
can be said to have been the first performer, who
engaged in a form of storytelling which sometimes made use
of magic.
But
how do we define what is art? Art is form and content, which
means that all art consists of these two things. Form is
defined as the elements of art, the principals of design
and the physical materials that the artist uses. Content
is idea based and has to do with what the artist meant to
portray, what he did portray and the spectators reaction
to the work. Art can be painting, sculpture, poetry, music,
dance, theatre but not all of painting, sculpture, poetry,
music, dance, or theatre is necessarily art.
These
are definitely the components or elements of a work of art
and in that sense magic does utilize many of these elements.
Magic encompasses all of the performance arts. Dani Ortiz
states that magic "plays with the states, plays with
the concept of the arts, plays with colors, music, and dance.
A lot of art in one art of magic."

11. Chipper Lowell Talks About "The Chipper Experience"
--------------------------------------------
Article forward on by Mel Kientz (US)
by
Wayne Kawamoto, About.com Guide
Talk
about a true worker and busy magician. Award-winning comedian
and magician Chipper Lowell has been called an "artistic
cyclone of talent and comedy" and once you see him,
believe me, you'll agree. His act has taken him around the
world and he's currently on tour with his "The Chipper
Experience." Watch for Lowell at a venue near you.
He recently took time out to talk with Magic.About.com.
Wayne
Kawamoto: Please tell us about "The Chipper Experience."
Chipper
Lowell: "The Chipper Experience! - Where Comedy &
Magic Collide!" was first put together about 16 years
ago, and played a few theaters and a shorter version of
the show played for several summer seasons at various theme
parks across the United States, including Valley Fair, Great
America, and Knott's Berry Farm. From there, we were picked
up for an extended run contract at a casino in Lake Tahoe
which lasted 13 months and the show ran over 600 performances.
Since then we've been touring constantly at performing arts
centers and theaters nationwide, and the response has been
outstanding.
The
show is a high-energy blend of my own stand-up, tons of
visual comedy, and original magic routines, not to mention
a heavy dose of audience participation and improvisation.
The show works on many levels and truly appeals to audiences
ranging in age from 12 to 102! The magic takes place not
only on-stage but also in the audience with the help of
giant video screens. From time to time, depending upon which
routines I've selected to do, I'll also feature a special
guest star of magic - top-notch, magical artists like Jade
Tjin, Danny Cole, Arthur Trace or Christopher Hart. It's
a nice addition to the show and offers up even more variety
and surprises for our audiences.
It's
one of the few shows where you can see visual comedy like
one might see in a Looney Tunes cartoon, while also being
highly interactive with the audience as well. Everything
from accidentally pulling my skin off my arm as if it were
simply a glove, to spinning my limbs a full 360 degrees.
There are other unusual routines throughout the show that
involve bizarre items such as medieval hatchets and axes,
hundreds of high-flying ping-pong balls, toilet plungers,
giant underwear, a trained fake turtle getting shot out
of a cannon, and so much more. Need I go on?
Wayne
Kawamoto: Does your show change depending on where you are
performing?
Chipper
Lowell Absolutely! We always try to fit the show to the
venue and take into consideration the stage size and type
of audience, as well as where the show is located. If I
can poke fun at things happening in that particular neck
of the woods, I certainly do so. And of course, because
I like to ad-lib and improvise during the shows, the material
changes constantly from minute to minute depending upon
who I have up onstage to help me, be it a fireman, an attorney,
a mom, a dad, etc...
Wayne
Kawamoto: Any interesting stories from your current tour?
Chipper
Lowell I've have had some very cool things happen where
parents have come up to me after a performance, and through
happy tears, told me that their son hadn't talked at all
for years until he started laughing during the show that
night. And here he was, just chatting away suddenly! It
can get pretty emotional at times because you truly don't
know the effect that your show has on an audience beyond
the enjoyment of that evening of entertainment. That's pretty
special and humbling.
On
the other end of the spectrum, I once had a young lady up
onstage and she
picked a card as part of a magic trick. I asked her, in
a loud voice, to show the card "to all your friends,"
assuming she would show it to the audience. Instead, she
ran back down the front steps and down the long aisle all
the way to her seat at the back of the large theater, showed
it to her immediate family and then ran all the way back
up onstage. It's pretty funny when some volunteers take
directions a little too literally!
There
was also the time when an older gentleman who didn't speak
English very well was helping me, and I asked him to remove
his jacket. He was a little confused, but finally seemed
to understand, and proceeded to take off his coat...and
then started unbuckling his pants...and unbuttoning his
shirt! Thankfully I stopped him in time and got the show
back on track!
Wayne
Kawamoto: Anything else that you would like to talk about?
Chipper
Lowell It's been a fun year so far, not only with the touring
schedule but also being recently nominated for "Stage
Magician of the Year" by the Academy of Magical Arts
(The Magic Castle). I was very surprised and humbled to
be recognized by my peers in magic. I've also been honored
to work with some idols of mine during the last couple of
months at various special events including singer/songwriter
Paul Williams ("The Rainbow Connection"), singer
Michael Bolton and comedian, Jerry Seinfeld. Sometimes I
have to pinch myself!
Our
tour this year ends with shows in Southern California, which
is always nice to be appearing a mere 30 minutes from where
I live!
It
will a lot of fun, and I'll be doing two performances that
same day, May 11th, at The Lewis Family Playhouse in Rancho
Cucamonga. 2:00pm and 7:00pm.
Special
guest artist joining me onstage will be the magic of Jade,
who has won "Female Magician of the Year" and
recently appeared on "The Late Late Show with Craig
Ferguson."

13. The Centerpiece Of Sandy's Show Was The 'Blaney Levitation'
--------------------------------------------
Message by Walter Blaney (US)
Past
International President of IBM David Sandy just spent a
week appearing at The Magic Castle, April 8-14. Among his
tricks was the Zaney Blaney Ladder Levitation. David has
a beautiful routine he uses, and it got a good Magic Castle
review by Nick Lewin, as did all three acts on the bill.
"The
centerpiece of Sandy's show was the 'Blaney Levitation',
which most surely rates as one of the greatest illusions
ever created.
It
is baffling and beautiful to watch and fools the eye and
mind in an immaculate fashion."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZTaOGms7QU&feature=youtu.be
Nick
closed with this summation on the show, which included Tom
Burgoon, David Sandy and Jason Andrews.
"In
nearly 40 years I don't remember a bill that was better
balanced and booked. After 45-minutes the audience left
the room discussing in delighted voices what they had seen,
and isn't that exactly what we want in our club?"

14. Broken Wand - Ed Hill
--------------------------------------------
Message by Ray Ricard
The
world of magic lost a good friend and strong supporter on
April 11th, 2013. Ed Hill passed away suddenly and unexpectedly
on Thursday from an apparent heart attack, he was 59. Ed
was born November 3, 1953 in Milton, Massachusetts. He is
survived by his wife Patricia (Renaud) Hill, two children
David and Danielle, his mother Eleanor (Flood) Hill, and
two brothers George and Charles.
Ed
and his family resided in North Providence, RI where they
have lived for the last 28 years and prior to that Esmond,
RI where they lived for 5 years. Ed's current position was
the Technology Coordinator for the Smithfield School Department,
prior to that he taught in the Smithfield School System
and was the Department Head of the Science Department.
In
addition to Ed's work as an educator he was an active member
of many magic organizations and clubs. Ed was a founding
member of the New England Magic Collectors Association as
well as a past president. He was also a member of the Society
of American Magicians Ring #26, and a member of the International
Brotherhood of Magicians Ring #44.
The
latter of these two clubs he was Order of Merlin. Ed was
also a member of the Magic Circle in London and a past president
of the Rhode Island Society of Magicians. In addition to
being an amateur magician for which he won a number of local
club awards as a performer he was an active historian in
magic. Ed was the editor of numerous club bulletins as well
as a limited edition magazine that he and his wife produced
from 1989-1992 entitled M.C.I.C. or the Magic Collector's
Information Consortium. Other newsletters he served as editor
of included "The New England Magic Collectors Association"
from 1980-present, "News & Notes" from 1981-1985,
"Yankee Magic Collector" from 1983-present, "R.I.S.M.
Newsletter" 1985-1999 and "News from the Board
of Governors" 1999-present.
Over
his many years of collecting Ed also produced 13 limited
edition monographs on various subjects including tokens,
trade cards, biographies and performance. Most of these
were done in small print runs and are sought after today.
Ed was well known not only locally but internationally.
He was a frequent attendee of IBM and SAM conventions as
well as the Chicago Collector's group, the Los Angeles Conference
on Magic History and the Magic Circle in London. Many of
these groups he lectured for.
Ed's
main focus in the magic world was as a collector. He amassed
a huge collection of books, magazines, memorabilia, posters
and apparatus. His collection included early editions of
Scot's Discovery of Witchcraft, Dean's Whole Art of Legerdemain,
Hocus Pocus and numerous other Toole Stott titles. More
importantly than the books was Ed's material on New England
magicians specifically Rhode Island ones.
Ed
had acquired many of the scrapbooks, letters, photos and
memorabilia that made up the local magic seen. Ed was my
oldest friend in magic. I first met him at the age of 12
when he attended a magic performance I was giving. Over
the years he mentored me not only in the performance of
magic but in the history of it as well. He became not only
my friend but as the years passed a big brother as well.
Along with H. Adrian Smith, Ed was probably one of the reasons
why I collect magic history today. I will surely miss him
as many of the other hundreds of collectors he became friends
with will. He was always willing to contribute to projects
and much of his material can be found in the magazine articles
and books being published today.
I
can only hope to aspire to his level of dedication and helpfulness
that he provided to so many others. A broken wand ceremony
was conducted by his son David Hill and Larry Stangel at
the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home. In attendance where
more than 50 magicians many of them having traveled considerable
distances to say their goodbyes. A further testament to
the respect many had for this man. May you rest in peace
Ed and enjoy conversing with the many other magic greats
who have left us too soon. Until we meet again may all the
mysteries of magic be revealed before you leaving you with
endless wonder to educate those coming to join your circle.
