6. Peter Reveen Released From Hospital
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tyrone Reveen
After four weeks Peter Reveen Sr. was released from hospital
on Saturday March 30th. Even though he was hooked up with
Intravenous therapy during most of his hospital stay, he
still lost about 20 pounds during the last month due to
his apathy to eat or drink. Finally on March 29th the hospital
told us that there is nothing more they can do for him other
than to help allocate a hospice service that will help make
sure his final days will be comforting.
As
no one loves my father more than his own family, we have
chosen to convert his living room into a hospital room with
a hospital bed, oxygen machines, wheelchair, etc. and an
average crew of two and sometimes three medical professionals
that help tend to his every need on a daily basis. We are
all so very thankful for the staff and service of MSA Hospice,
without their help my mother would have no chance of handling
the level of care that my father requires at this point
in his life.
One
thing that we have learned beyond any question of doubt
during this ordeal is that the medication that has been
prescribed to my father for dealing with his dementia has
been more damaging to his mental health than helpful, ironically
my mother has been saying this for a long time.
One
of the doctors at the hospital was quick to suspect his
combative behavior was the result of adverse reactions caused
by the pharmaceutical drug called "Aricept". Days
after being taken off that drug there were extreme improvements
in his behavior including recognising the faces and names
of his son Calvin, Cal's wife Cathy and his grandchildren.
Although
his behavior modifications have become substantially more
tolerable without psychotropic medications, he still has
occasional outburst due to his dementia that often resemble
the rants of a drunken sailor (particularly when he receives
invasive medical procedures that seem to happen every four
hours in a hospital) however the difference between psychotropic
medications vs. non-psychotropic medications are like night
and day.
Everyone
who knows of my father's photographic and eidetic memory
capabilities of the past can somewhat imagine how exasperating
it has been for him to lose that capability.
Beethoven
lost his hearing 13 years before his death however he continued
to write some of his finest work such as the "Moonlight
Sonata" after becoming completely deaf by bighting
his teeth onto a steel bar attached to his piano, by feeling
the frequency resonance of the sound waves through the metal
bar he was able to feel the music.
Unfortunately
Reveen has had no such metal bar to reconnect his mind to
his memory as Beethoven did. As Reveen's doctor friend insisted
him to take more prescription medications, the more noticeable
his memory depravation became evident. Whether or not there
is a direct link connecting pharmaceutical drugs to Dementia,
Alzheimer's and memory deprivation, it is certainly a hot
topic of debate throughout the medical profession. One of
the most recent articles I read suggested a link between
Alzheimer's and the food chemical MSG.
I
think the safest way to avoid health problems is to replace
over active drug pushing doctors with naturopathic doctors
and eat organic, but I must admit it's not very easy to
eat organic when you spend most of your life touring on
the road as our family has.
My
father's defiance to eat or drink much is one of our biggest
challenges on a daily basis as it has been for several months.
He refuses to be subjected with a feed tube or any other
resuscitation devices.
His
last written testament has been brought to our attention
recently wherein Reveen adamantly states that no medical
procedures are to be used to prolong his life whereas the
outcome of his full recovery is not expected. As his Dementia
has been growing exponentially with no cure in sight, our
family has agreed to respect and honor his instructions
by providing him the most comfortable, painless and loving
care we can without forcing life support upon him.
His
truest of friends gain no pleasure in witnessing the level
of his suffering as he has sustained in recent months especially.
Since arriving home he has expressed no desire to socialize.
He tolerates his medical staff but prefers just to be left
alone at this time.
Most
of our closest friends are respectful to our request for
privacy at this time especially since at this stage my father
seems to have little or no recollection of his visitors
the moment they walk outside of the sightline of his peripheral
vision.
We
prefer that his friends and admirers remember him for the
man he was, and I know that my father feels the same.
I
would like to thank all our friends especially the ones
who have been supportive of Peter & Coral during these
trying times. We'd also like to thank the medical staff
of the Summerlin Hospital, the Harmon Medical and Rehabilitation
Hospital for their wonderful support in doing everything
possible and especially Judy & Paris and their crew
the MSA Hospice.
We
will let you know when the inevitable happens.
Sincere Best Wishes!
The Reveen Family

7. Remarkable Magic #295 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
A
midnight visit to David Copperfield's lair. Part Two.
Last
week's column was about my delightful visit and tour of
David Copperfield's unique Las Vegas HQ. Well one really
neat thing happened during my visit and I want to share
it with you in this week's column. It involved David's magnificent
museum that is housed in his warehouse complex.
One
of the museum's major exhibits was dedicated to Orson Welles
and his career as a magician. Welles was the host of David's
first television special and due to this obviously holds
a special place in his heart and history. Several of the
props on display were from the famous Orson Welles/Rita
Hayworth USO tour that took place during World War Two.
In
a casual manner I asked David if he knew who owned the Owen's
broom suspension harness that they had used on the tour,
which Welles subsequently utilized with Lucille Ball on
the 'I Love Lucy' show. He replied, with just a hint of
exasperation in his voice that he didn't, I could tell the
question went right to the collector in him. I replied in
the same casual tone, "Oh, I do." There was a
brief silence.
Copperfield
looked at me rather sharply and replied, "...but you're
not a collector." He did of course have a very good
point---I have avidly collected many things in my life,
but never magic props. This just happened to be one of the
two collectible items that I did own, and this was a sheer
coincidence. As far as I was concerned it had always been
a working prop.
In
fact, I am so unexcited by magic props that this fascinating
relic was residing somewhere in my garage in an old duffle
bag in a rather unloved condition. I had bought the prop
from Piet Paulo, who had acquired it from the Chuck Kirkham
collection. The prop had been hand made by Carl Owen for
Orson Welles and especially fitted to the delightful contours
of Ms. Hayworth. After the couple's USO tour the broomstick
suspension was passed on from Welles to Kirkham, with the
condition that if Orson wanted to perform it then he could
borrow the props back from Chuck.
This
did in fact happen on several occasions and with the assistance
of Kirkham, and sometimes his wife Phyllis, Welles presented
the illusion in his own inimitable and grandiose style on
several outings. The famous 'I Love Lucy' episode was one
of these occasions. I just happened to be in the right place,
with the right cash, to pick up the harness when I needed
it for a corporate event. I discarded the brooms and used
it for a microphone suspension.
That
harness was a gorgeous, but incredibly heavy prop! After
using it for several years my partner BooBoo gave me an
ultimatum--it was a lighter harness or a new assistant ---the
decision was easy. The harness went into my garage and stayed
there.
Looking
at all the wonderful props on display in David's museum
gave me more than a slightly guilty pang and I made an instantaneous
decision, "Would you like it for the museum?"
I said. David replied, and this may not surprise you, "Yes!"
I was just delighted to think that this wonderful prop would
find a new home, where it would be better housed than in
a duffle bag in an overcrowded garage. I thought the history
of the prop left it deserving of a better fate. A couple
of weeks later my daughter Natasha and I took the harness
down to the MGM Grand and after catching David's performance,
it officially changed hands once again.
I
will post some photos of the harness and some of these moments
in its history on my blog if you want to check them out
at www.remarkablemagic.com and you might enjoy the visuals.
As a big fan of Orson Welles, Piet Paulo and David Copperfield
I relish having my own little place in the history of this
iconic and unique prop. It's probably good for a couple
of comps to David's show too, if I ever want them!
I
have some great products and videos online. Check them out
on my web site.

8. Festivals - Show Content - #294 - Kyle Peron

So
what do you have as the content of your show? What is it
that your show
should contain to be able to perform for festivals and have
they worked effectively?
First
we should talk about the typical length of a festival show
and what festivals tend to gravitate more towards. I do
a 30 minute show and realized early on that this is really
the ideal length for any festival performance.
The reason for this is two-fold:
1)
The festival is all about people moving around from one
place to another. There is so much to see and do, that anything
longer than 30 minutes starts to become a nuisance and you
tend to lose the crowd. The festival also must appeal to
the venders who are paying for spots to be there to sell
their wares. Because of this, festivals want to keep folks
moving around on a consistent basis.
2)
30 minutes is also an ideal time for a performance. It gives
people a moment to rest, and eat something from the food
vendors. Your performance gives them a reason to stay put
for a little while.
You
also want to keep your routines visual as well as keep them
shorter and more compact. A visual routine will draw those
in that may be walking by your performance area. They will
see the visual nature of the show and tend to be curious.
Curiosity really does make people want to stay and watch
and once they do, you usually can hook them into staying
longer.
If
you do the shorter style routines, these people that stopped
to watch you half way through a routine, have a reason to
stay as they will not feel they are lost or left out. They
will only have to wait maybe a minute before they get included
into a new routine and there for feel more a part of your
overall performance.
When
working festivals make sure you cater to a family audience
and not just the kids. By tailoring the show in this fashion,
you will keep more people watching you for a longer period
of time. Festivals are geared towards getting families to
spend the day out together. By having a show that appeals
to the entire family, gives you more value to the festival.
Certainly
you can have a festival show that is for the kids only.
You may choose to do this because it fits your style and
who you are. You may also choose to create one as another
offering. However, if you decide to go this route, make
sure you approach the festival by asking for their children's
entertainment chairperson. Many festivals will have a children's
area and you can work towards getting booked for that area.
However,
I try and entertain every single person in that audience
in some way. That is what is important to me. This is why
I make sure our shows cater to all age levels from 3 to
103. You make your routines vary to allow for this.
Many
of you will realize that a lot of what you already perform
will carry over perfectly for a festival show. Therefore,
many of you have a great base show already from which you
can learn to adapt and tweak to make it work ideal for the
festival situation.
Another
thing you will want to do is keep your routines angle proof.
In festival shows, your audience is never really controlled
as much as you may want it to be. People will stand and
sit all over the place. Try and do routines and acts that
are not dependent on angles and it will serve you much better.
Have
a good combination of a visual opener with comedy and of
course audience interaction. This combination makes for
a show that flows well and gets people involved. The key
is reaction and interaction. I want to engage the audience
as much as I can. My client wants to hear an audience having
a great time.
If
you have illusions, then feel free to do them as they do
add a lot of value to a festival show and they can increase
your income as well. However, do not feel that you MUST
do illusions to be able to work festivals. Even if you are
a strolling performer only, you can provide a strolling
entertainment package that works for you and for the festival
you are seeking to perform for.
As
you work on your festival show, keep in mind you are working
outside. You must take weather into consideration with what
you do and account for heat wind and other situations that
come up. Later on in this book I will talk about the weather
element and tips and techniques to work around them easily.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

9. Magic - Art, Craft Or Neither
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone - USA/Europe
Due to various Tech gremlins and computer crashes this excellent
piece by Ivonne Perez Montijo has had its sequence interrupted.
In order to give it its full credit and due respect we are
starting it again.
MAGIC
- Art, Craft or Neither
At
the beginning of this series, I mentioned that I would be
including thoughts & musings from various guests who
have kindly shared their perspectives. Last week it was
Jason Andrews and prior to that, Paul Draper. This week
I am delighted to welcome Ivonne Perez Montijo
For
just over 3 decades, Ivonne has been active in Film &
TV. She is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has also
written and produced independent short films and theatrical
productions. Her "day job" has been as "Pinky
the Clown", performing magic and entertaining young
children all over Los Angeles. Ivonne has a B.A. in Spanish
Literature with a minor in Theatre & Film from U.C.L.A.
and a M.A. in Religious Studies from C.S.U.L.B.
She
is currently studying music theory, piano, and guitar at
Long Beach City College. Ivonne is first and foremost a
writer and a story teller. She has written numerous poems
over the years and her work can be found on:-www.ivonnemontijo.wordpress.com.
I have not read all her written work but from the writings
that I have perused, it is indeed praiseworthy. Her conceptual
thinking and phraseology are superb. I have publicly stated
that some aspects of her work flow in a similar vein to
Kahlil Gibran. She is also currently developing her thesis,
"Mary Magdalene: Beloved Wife and Disciple of Jesus
of Nazareth" into a book. I am eagerly looking forward
to this as the topic has interested me for some 50 years.
She also has a page dedicated to inspiring thoughts on Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/ForTheLoveOfYou.April2012
For
reasons that will become apparent as you read the following
words, I am both deeply appreciative & delighted that
she responded to my request to contribute to the topic.
Of necessity, The Editor and I have chosen to publish it
in installments over the next few weeks.

The
Art of Magic - Part 1
By Ivonne Perez Montijo, M.A.
My
induction into the world of magic occurred 30 years ago
via my then boyfriend, Jay Scott Berry, who at the time
was a rising star of the junior members of the Hollywood
Magic Castle. I would see him perform at the Castle and
hang out at Hollywood Magic store with the likes of Max
Maven, Christopher Hart, Lorenzo Clark, George Tovar and
many others that came through the doors of Hollywood Magic.
Jay would talk a lot about "real magic" and being
a "real wizard". Having come from a Catholic background
I had no idea what Jay was talking about at the time but
he gave me the book, Illusions, by Richard Bach which opened
a portal into another world for me. The relationship didn't
last but my love for magic and performance ensued. I would
eventually create, "Pinky the Clown" performing
magic for little tykes.
The
million dollar question in the world of professional performance
magic appears to be, is magic an art, craft or neither?
There are two components that must be examined independently
of each other in this question. The first component is magic
and the second component is art. In order to be able to
say that magic is art or that magic is not art one needs
to define what is magic and what art is. In this article
I will look at the idea of magic and art in society and
culture and in their inception. And then we can examine
where is the intersection of magic and art if at all. ----

I
came upon this film on Netflix. It is worthy of the 90 minutes
you will spend watching. When I was in the 6th grade, Dell
O Dell came to our school to put on her auditorium show.
My peers volunteered me to be her foil for a guillotine
illusion. I can only say that I lost my head over magic
in that performance. One of the magicians in the film lost
his wife when as his assistant, she actually lost her head.
I
would recommend/prescribe this film Rx Rx Rx Rx Rx (5/5)

14. My Morning With Murray
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star
Murray
Hatfield had a triumphal lecture tour through the U.S. during
the month of March. He has rarely lectured (let alone performed)
in the U.S. as he owns a brick-and-mortar magic shop in
Victoria, British Columbia. And for past couple of decades
he has also trouped across Canada with a large show that
features other magic and variety acts. Well over 2 million
people have attended his show and over Twenty Million Dollars
have been raised as a result, for charities ranging from
Burn Units and Hospital Wings to Training Dogs for the Visually
Impaired and Breast Cancer Research.
While
he was passing through Houston, Texas, Murray sat down with
me to chat
about his extensive touring schedule across Canada and the
world. We talked about "Phone Room" shows, booking
events, running a magic shop, and much, much more. So much
in fact that I decided to break up our two hour chat into
two segments. Both of them are available on The Magic Word
at:

16. Ben Robinson Announcing His Retirement From Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Ben Robinson (US)
Dear
Magic Community:
I
never thought I'd be announcing my retirement from magic,
but all things must end. No more coin tricks, sleeves full
of silk scarves or ghosts walking up the aisles. Nope, all
over.
Instead
I've enrolled in a Doctoral program in Applied Quantum Physics
at The University of Edinburgh, And as soon as I find out
how to get there, I shall go.
My
first public experiments of my new road shall commence at:
The
Suffolk Theater
Riverhead, NY
(on Long Island)
118 Main Street
Saturday,
April 6 (in honor of Houdini's birthday), 2013
Two shows: 2pm & 8pm each show 90 min. w/o intermission
Tickets $12 & $18. See: www.suffolktheater.com
No children under age 6 please.
The
Suffolk is a gorgeous renovated theater just opened in March
2013 after 80 proud years.
