Note from Walter Zaney Blaney; re letter from Edmund Khong, "Not All Chinese Are Crooks".

Yes, I agree that not all Chinese are crooks. I'm sure my magic friend Carl Williams agrees. But in Carl's letter last week, he was not talking about "all Chinese". He was only referring to one crook that ripped-off a trick from Joe Porper, and that particular fellow, unnamed, happened to be Chinese. I wonder if Mr. Khong can tell us who it is.

I myself have posted letters in New Zealand Magic Ezine saying that the company China Magic (52magic.com) are crooks. They steal so many proprietary magic products, including mine. And I named names. They not only steal products, they steal whole websites of the inventors and try to make it appear their customers are getting the real thing at a lower price, and thus get ripped-off themselves when they receive junk magic. I would like to see Mr. Khong comment on the people who run China Magic Co. I have heard from a number of my Chinese magic friends who tell me they are embarrassed that China Magic does its work from China, and they know it is a blight on their country. So I just wanted Mr. Khong to understand that we do not think "all Chinese are crooks", nor was that ever implied.

The magic inventors of the world are constantly fighting the rip-off guys wherever they are found, in any country, be it Italy, Belgium, England, Mexico or the USA. You simply have a few in China who are, just like a number of other countries do, including, as I said, our USA.

Cordially, Walter Zaney Blaney

5. The S. A. M. Hall Of Fame & Magic Museum Reopens
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)

Sunday, September 17, 2012, was an exciting and much anticipated day, especially for the Los Angeles area volunteers and staff of the Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame & Magic Museum. The Whittier Museum, operated by the Whittier Historical Society, has provided an entire second floor in their historic downtown building for the Hall of Fame & Magic Museum.

The exhibits of the Society's museum were back on display after being unavailable for public view for a number of years. Although the Hall and Museum is still looking for a permanent home in the greater Los Angeles area, the exhibits will be on display at the Whittier Museum in downtown Whittier, California for the next year. See a short photo gallery on the news page at www.magicsam.com

A performers guide to video.

Something that I get quite a bit of correspondence about is the topic of video. There are actually several aspects normally covered in these emails, so let me try and blend some answers together into a couple of concise columns.

Promotional Videos.

Unless you have achieved a great deal of name recognition and respect for yourself you need a good promotional video. Time was a client was pleased as punch if you even possessed a videotape of your show. Now it is a must, and the DVD had better be good if you expect it to get the job done and the date booked.

The simple rule of thumb is that a contemporary promotional video should not be longer than four and a half minutes. It is also generally agreed that if it doesn't get the job done in the first thirty seconds then it is unlikely to receive much more interest. This presents quite a challenge!

Thirty seconds----wow, that makes America's Got Talent's ninety seconds seem generous! However, don't panic, as long as you hook the buyer's attention in those opening moments - you've got an extra four minutes to 'reel' them in. Not a lot of time - but enough.

Here are some general tips. Your opening 30-second sequence should be a fast paced and dynamic montage that captures the mood of your entire show. It is an excellent move to make it a non-verbal sequence that is orchestrated with some lively and upbeat music. Key graphics such as your name/logo/title of the show etc should be added to the segment. This way it becomes somewhat like an opening title sequence in a movie or TV show.

In many ways, the remaining four minutes should function in much the same manner. You will need to cut to the 'reveals' in the magic and feature them as the body of the video. Chose a few of the funniest and most original clips of the verbal comedy in your act and mix them up into an attractive blend. Three key words Cut, Prune and Tighten.

While the material on display should be representative of what you do in your show, the tricks do NOT have to be in the same order that they appear in your act. On a promotional video you are not saving up for a big finish/finale as you do in a live show. Your job when you produce/direct your 'showreel' is to hit the viewer hard and fast. There is often a stack of videos for a buyer to view and they can get very jaded after the first couple viewings. Hit hard and fast.

Needless to say, in this day and age, your promotional video needs to be available on the Internet, as this is where potential buyers will most likely view it. Booking agents will probably embed your video into their own web pages if they are really interested in selling you. This is an ideal situation; so let me give you a couple of hints to increase the efficiency of your video as a sales tool.

Don't plaster your contact information all over your promotional showreel, as this can be a huge red flag and deal breaker to agents and producers. If you are sending out the DVD to a private booker then it is a different story. With the unit cost of DVDs as reasonable as they now are, have two versions produced---one with contact information and one without.

In the same vein, it is now not uncommon for successful performers to have two web sites: their regular (booking information supplied) web site, and a 'ghost site' that contains no contact information and is totally agent/producer friendly. In this way a producer/agent can happily direct his clients to your website as a direct link from his own corporate site. Keep your 'ghost site ' short and simple and business like.

Once in a blue moon (especially) for private engagements, such as house parties etc, you may find someone wants a full version of your show. My technique to cover this was to have a DVD that contained both the short 'showreel' and the full-length show mastered as two separate chapters. They had their choice on the initial menu.

Be aware however; that a 50-minute video of a really great show can appear as slow as mud oozing when viewed 'cold.' People are used to the razzle-dazzle that is presented to them on television and you are likely to be very unexciting with a 50-minute block of video that is devoid of visual 'wow'. If they get bored watching your video, how likely do you think they are to want to book the act?

Look out for more video pointers next week, on a variety of different aspects and applications of video to magic.

I have some really great magical items in my online store and more being released all the time!

7. Social Media Marketing - #276 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign

Social media is one of the fastest growing areas of marketing there is. Companies in the know have already formed depts or hired companies devoted to social marketing. The idea is what is referred to as CRM marketing or Customer Relationship Marketing.

Back in the day marketing was essentially around the creation of brand and brand based marketing. You could see this early on with the advent of brands like "Tide". This brand marketing developed when TV came onboard because now they could instantly create national brands instead of localized efforts.

But in today's world, CRM marketing is where people in the know are headed. This means that you work on the customer relationship with your service or product. With so many more "touch points" in regards to means in which customers can engage with a service or product, you have to be able to engage them and interact with them.

Social Media channels like Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube and others are now providing means in which to instantly engage consumers on a higher level. You are really missing out on a lot if you are not learning about and capitalizing on social media for your business. It really is that important and can make a HUGE difference for you and your business.

I will not even get started on mobile based media. That is even larger and more fascinating how companies like Disney and MGM Grand are using mobile based media approaches. But anyone who earns any type of income from their own business can benefit at least from the creation of a Facebook Fan Page or Group. It is very easy to do and best of all it is FREE. This is a means in which YOU can extend your brand and interact directly with prospects and consumers who are interested in your services.

You can post photos from your events and share thoughts, ideas and information in a very real and live means. Folks who "like" your page will receive your information every time you post a new update or a new photo. What a wonderful means in which to get information out to them and stay connected year round. The best part is that they have an active part in the interaction with you. They can post and respond directly to something you post and you can interact back. Do not overlook how powerful this can be.

Now if you want to get folks to know about your Facebook page, you need to market it like you would anything else. Make sure to include your Facebook page URL on your marketing materials including websites, business cards, stationary, flyers etc.

When you create a Facebook Fan Page or group, it will give you a long URL address. do not worry, you can customize it once you reach 25 members. this is very easy to do because Facebook makes it easy for you to send out invites to your friends to inform them of your new page.

Once you reach 25 members, you can easily change your URL to be anything you want that is better branded to you and your services you provide. just follow the simple online instructions to set it up in under a minute.

When at your events, do not forget to let folks know about your Facebook or social media pages. A sign is a great thing to have on stage near you so folks can see that you have a social site and can join it at the event itself.

Have fun as you learn more about this growing field of social media marketing. let it really take you to new directions with your marketing.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

AD: As you and I and indeed many of our Pro friends know the glitzy glamour of showbiz often masks a great deal of personal pain ..but as Pros we go out there, smile, do our thing and keep moving, what's that saying, behind every clown there is a tragedy, but we put on our performing persona, smile, step out and do our thing .

PF: Absolutely true Tony, we put on our performing persona and do our thing, and that is exactly what I did. I just got out there and did it! Performing at every kind of event from children's parties to close-up magic, cabaret and stage magic to even my own full evening show. I accumulated a vast experience of all things magical and because of my involvement with the Society of Irish Magicians; I was brought him into contact with a number of knowledgeable and very helpful magicians including Neville Wiltshire, Tony Sadar and Quentin Reynolds.

AD: Yes indeed fine names. I know dear Quentin personally and was on the same Bill with him at the MARS Convention in Israel. Also on the Bill were Pavel (RIP) and Gregory Wilson. Amazing mind, Quentin .. You are both still good friends.

PF: Yes Tony, we are indeed good pals and he is a font of knowledge and a Class performer. As you know he now lives in Manchester so whenever I am over we hook up for dinner and a chat. I did not really know him well during my early days in magic, which was a great pity as I am sure I could have saved myself a lot of pain and anguish if I had.

AD: True . true ..but you do know him now and benefit from his wisdom & experience and as I mentioned already ..I love his thinking and his wonderful book entitled, 'INTUITION - Your Secret Power' - so Pat, continue with the background of those early Pro days.

PF: Sure. Starting from my very first professional engagement, I worked with many of the stars of Irish show business and in 1991 teamed up with Irelands best loved comedian Brendan Grace. At around the same time, I met Tanya Kelly and began a partnership that continued on and off stage for sixteen years. Following two extensive tours in the U K with Brendan Grace during the spring and autumn of 1994, Tanya and I were invited to appear at the British Magical Championships in Blackpool, and much to our delight we won first in the General magic category.

AD: That kind of thing always helps .

PF: I'll say it does .the exposure from appearing at the championships led to bookings at many of the major UK conventions, magic society dinners and events. With the help of Tony Griffith I organized a couple of lecture tours in Great Britain and then further afield to Italy, Belgium and Australia. I am sure some magicians thought it a little strange that a guy from Ireland, who was not in the magic business very long, was now suddenly out on lecture tours and to be honest I was a little surprised myself. Together with Tanya I formed ABC Magic, a company with a dual purpose. On one hand it marketed many of my original effects and on the other hand it was an agency that provided magicians for the ever expanding corporate market.

12. Broken Wand - Melba Dew
--------------------------------------------
Message by Brad Zinn (US)

Friends,

This is to inform you that Melba Dew, 101, beloved wife of Danny Dew, has gone to join Danny in the arms of the Lord. She passed at approximately 11:00 am Saturday, September 29th, 2012.

Melba was born in Pueblo, Colorado on June 1st, 1911. She and Danny went on the road in the 1930's performing musical glasses, musical saw, magic, sand paintings, rag pictures, and Melba played the piano to accompany Danny. She
saw two World Wars, the advancement of the automobile and the advancement of flight from commercial airlines to the landing on the moon. She also worked at the Pentagon while it was under construction during WWII.

She and Danny entertained audiences all across the country, between Danny's
employment as a head chef. Their audiences included many celebrities, including Shirley Temple and W.C. Fields. After their days on the road, they settled in Phoenix where they continued to perform, as well as manufacture magic, including the renown Paul Fox line of products. They sold thousands of sets of Paul Fox Cups for use in the classic Cups and Balls. Melba did all of the polishing of the finished cups.

Danny was the head chef for the Camelback Inn when it opened in the 1930's, and was also the head chef at The WigWam Resort in Litchfield Park, AZ. Eventually they became the exclusive caterers for Bud Brown's Barn, a popular venue in the northeast Phoenix area for Western Style events. They lived in a trailer right on the property.

Danny and Melba were friends with virtually all of the big names in the world of Magic, including Dai Vernon, Senor Frakson, Jay Ose, The Larsens, Ken Brooke, Fred Kaps, Chuck Kohrs, Joe Cossari, and hundreds of others. Many magicians would send Danny their latest creations for his coveted stamp of approval.

International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 55 (Phoenix), in the late 1970's honored Danny and Melba with a well attended banquet with guests from all around the country. Ring 55 was soon renamed "The Bert Easley/Danny Dew Ring." A second sold out banquet in their honor followed in the 1980's.

Danny and Melba were the subject of an issue of Genii magazine in June 1979. Danny resisted the idea of being the subject of a magazine issue for many years, but once it became a reality, it was a point of great joy for both he and Melba. Danny also received awards from The Academy of Magical Arts and Sciences (aka The Magic Castle in Hollywood) in the 1980's.

Service was held on Wednesday, October 3rd, at 1:30 pm. Donations to the Danny Dew Memorial Fund would be appreciated to help defray the costs of the funeral and burial. Thank you.

14. Andrade's Magic Shop In Allans - Melbourne
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tony Trembath (Australia)

I am an Australian Artist and Curator and many years ago an amateur magician purchasing books theatre makeup and magicians paraphernalia from Andrade's magic Shop in Allans at 276 Collins Street Melbourne.

I loved that shop as a kid and was inspired by the young man who ran the store to continue my interests in performing as a magician from age 7 to 16 when I think the magic of the opposite sex won my interests. Anyway sorry for the long introduction.

Chance has it that I have been drawn back to the Old Allans building over recent years. The first was to learn Mandarin while the building was undergoing a transformation and more recently I have had many meetings on the 1st floor mezzanine where the magic shop was. Now the space is occupied by the office of Melbourne International Fine Art gallery. I visit for exhibitions and to represent the work of Chinese Artists I have met in Beijing.

This return to the 276-278 Collins Street building and the change of purposes somehow in parallel with changes in my interests intrigues me and I would like to undertake a biographical project from my position as artist and project this as a documentary exhibition from my perspective as curator.

I wonder if you have any contacts that may be able to assist my project with anecdotes and/or photographs of the store, its stock and the man who used to manage the store in the mid to late 50's.

I guess this sounds a bit strange but for me inspiration for my work can come from something jumping out of my past. I never know just where it will go but I'm interested in the research process as much as the creative outcome but mostly chance uncovers something beyond the initial impulse.

I would very much appreciate any assistance you can offer.

Many thanks,
Tony
