FISM Special Awards --------------------------------------------- Message by Max Maven FISM Special Awards Chairman of the Awards Committee Dear Colleague: Once again, it is time to begin working on the FISM Special Awards. Six years ago at the FISM congress in Stockholm, a new tradition began with the presentation of three non-contest awards. These were developed by me at the request of then-President Dag Lofalk. These new awards augment the World Championship prizes, by honoring contemporary magicians in non-performance categories. With input from International President Eric Eswin and others, I determined the categories and developed the process by which the awards are generated. The system worked well in 2006, and again for the Beijing congress in 2009. Now, we continue. You are receiving this letter because you are the president of a FISM member club, or because you are someone we respect as an authority on the current state of magic (or both!). There are three categories. Each is intended to address more than a single accomplishment; to consider a person's work covering a wide span of time. Creativity & Artistic Vision This award appraises the person's range of creation, not simply in terms of technical invention but also with attention paid to the larger conceptual views that inform that person's work. Prior recipients: 2006, Gaëtan Bloom (France); 2009, Jim Steinmeyer (USA) History, Research & Scholarship This award recognizes scholarship, assessed both in terms of academic depth and the manner and quality of the distribution of such information. Prior recipients: 2006, Eddie Dawes (England); 2009, Bill Kalush (USA) Theory & Philosophy This award gives tribute to a person who has approached magic from a viewpoint that is analytical, academic, and perhaps even spiritual. Prior recipients: 2006, Tommy Wonder (Netherlands); 2009, Juan Tamariz (Spain) In both previous years, we've had a diverse list representing people from a range of countries and cultures. The goal is to build an equally worthy list for the 2012 nominations. This is where you come in. Please consider the possibilities, and send me suggestions. There is no limit as to how many names to suggest. Previous nominees may be re-nominated. Previous winners may not be re-nominated in a category they've already won, but may be proposed for a different award. The only restriction is that a nominee must be alive at this time; these are contemporary honors, hence topicality is a factor. To enable a situation that is not complicated by politics or personal relationships, the names of the people who participate in this process will be kept private. Your input will also be kept private. If you think of someone who you feel ought to be included in this advisory group, please let me know? In order to have a practical process, please get your suggestions to me by May 5. The names that are received will be examined and coordinated, and lists of five nominees in each category will be produced. Then, you will receive those lists, and vote. The results will be announced at the upcoming FISM Congress in Blackpool. Send your suggestions to: FISMnominations@aol.com Thank you in advance for your participation. With your help and advice, we can continue to make these awards meaningful and significant. Cordially, Max Maven FISM Special Awards Chairman of the Awards Committee -------------------------------------------- 3. The M1M Festival - So What Happened? --------------------------------------------- Message by Jay Scott Berry Many of you will have heard by now that there was a last minute cancellation of the M1M Festival in Kuala Lumpur. The decision to do this was not mine nor did I have any control over it. In fact the promoter made this 11th hour decision which put me in an extremely difficult situation. Since there have been many false reports and rumours, I felt it was necessary that I set the record straight. First off, I want to be very clear that none of the players in this tragedy are actually Malaysian. This is important because I don't want any of this to reflect badly upon Malaysia or the Malaysian people. This whole project began over a year ago as a venture between me and Iranian Magician, Mahdi Moammer, aka Moudini. He seemed like a nice enough guy and he had a friend, Amir Teymour Nayeri, who was willing to put up the funds for the Festival. The basic agreement was that Mahdi and Amir would deal with all matters in Malaysia and guarantee the funding and that I would secure the artists and create the shows. Everything was built upon that basic trust. That was my big mistake: Trusting Mahdi and Amir. Of course, there was a solid contract in place but that, as we know, is really only as good as the ones who are signing it. In this case, both Mahdi and his friend, Amir, turned out to be very dishonest indeed. I set about the extensive job of arranging all of the performers and organizing the shows. To make this a truly unique event, we planned many original sequences and world premiere presentations. As always, I gave my all in the relentless pursuit of excellence and, as it all came down to show time, everyone on the performance team was ready to roll. Unfortunately, on Mahdi's side, this was not the case. In fact, he had built the entire event on an elaborate web of lies and deception, both to me and his friend Amir. Early on, he alienated the local magicians and magic groups and then boasted openly to me and them that "over 6000 tickets were sold". Meanwhile, he was guaranteeing Amir that "over 5000 Magicians were going to buy tickets". Unfortunately, none of this had any basis in reality. To be clear, I have extensive email documentation showing my dealings with Moudini and the elaborate con game that he ran leading up to when I arrived in Kuala Lumpur on March 10th. Less than a week later, everything hit the fan as Amir and I realized the extent of Mahdi's lies. My attitude was still that the show must go on. However, Amir decided otherwise and against my strong objections, cancelled the entire event only a week before it was to take place. At the time, my primary concern was that all the artists be paid in full. Initially, Amir gave his personal promise that he would do this. This was followed by three separate text messages promising "100%" that he would keep his word. Unfortunately, however, Mahdi continued spinning his lies and fanning the flames, first making up a ridiculous story about how I stole all the production money! (Which Amir controlled so I had no access to) Meanwhile, he was also blaming Amir and demanding money from him, even threatening lawsuit. I spent two weeks in Hell trying to just get the funds to pay the Artists. In the end both of these men betrayed me outright and are now squaring off for what appears to be a major legal battle. The only silver lining was that I was able to maintain control of the refund money from everyone's flights, which amounts to about half of the fees. In spite of both Mahdi and Amir demanding this money, my response was essentially that they could both kiss my posterior as I flew out of Malaysia. Dutifully, about half of these funds have now been distributed to the artists and the rest will follow as soon as I get it from the airlines. Certainly, this was not at all what I had hoped for but I had a responsibility to do my level best for the artists. In closing, I feel compelled to give everyone my strongest possible warning about trusting anything that Mahdi Moudini or Amir Nayeri says. They will, no doubt, continue to spread their outrageous lies in hopes of hiding their deceit. The same warning goes for anyone who might consider working with either of them. I only wish that someone had given me this warning a year ago. Everything said here can and will be corroborated by others, including many well-respected magicians in Malaysia. I am very sorry for the inconvenience that this caused for the artists, VIPs and ticket holders. Remarkable Magic. #28 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Two great reads. I want to congratulate a few people this week about the direction that magic publishing is heading. The new digital media is really coming of age in the magic community. I am delighted to be able write this within the pages of Magic New Zealand, which has been such a great pioneer in this area. I was delighted to see the first issue of Paul Romhany's new digital magazine 'Vanish'. It is a great addition to the magic scene and I am proud to be a part of it. It is wonderful that a magazine of this quality is available free of charge. I wish it much success and hope that it has a long and continued success. If you haven't read it, then download an issue and enjoy the content! I have also been catching up with the latest digital issues of Stan Allen's 'Magic' Magazine. It is a really great digital read and has been a powerful and very enjoyable addition to my magical reading. The iPad edition is just so beautifully thought out! The transition from story to story and the inclusion of video and the photo slide shows really get to the heart of learning a new move or trick. It is sophisticated, slick and simple in its delivery. I do love the freedom of knowing I have a long air flight and downloading 3 or 4 copies of 'Magic' for the journey. It is truly reading on demand, which is a great thing! I can't imagine life without my iPad now, and this is just one more great reason. I can't help feeling that we are looking at the future of magic publishing in this new medium, which the iPad allows us to explore. It is not only cool but it just works so darn well! I think that for a format like a magazine, magicians collectively have struck pay dirt. Much against my will they are winning me over away from the 'dead tree' world of publishing. I used to resent that term but now use it freely. I was also pleased to receive a copy of Shawn McMaster and Jonathan Levit's new 'Mendala' digital magazine from the publishers and found it to be a superb read. I had written a tribute about the late Martin Breese and it really looked better than I could have guessed in print. I was taken aback at how well the magazine handled all of its various goals. Both 'Mendala' and 'Magic' charge a very reasonable fee for their product and I think they are the cutting edge of the future wave of publishing within our niche market. I am sure Genii is also doing a superb job, and their policy of allowing subscribers to access back issues is a great one. I am not much of a subscription person though and buying Genii still gives me a reason to visit magic shops and leave with a minor purchase if I don't need a new thumb tip! I think there is a very real place for old fashioned 'pen and Ink' books too, and I feel that there are forms of information that are best transmitted in this format. Just as certainly there is a place for DVDs PDFs, and eBooks in the teaching of magic. Different things are best learned in different ways. We live in a grand time when we can even enjoy all these methods on one device! How lucky we are. Each medium presents its own challenges and advantages to the publisher and bestows different advantages to the purchaser. I believe we are moving into a new area of sophistication in this entire field of education. Next month will see the publication of my 'Ultimate Linking Finger Ring Routine' as a multimedia Book, DVD and CD combined into one package. It just seemed the correct way to handle the density of information and subtleties involved in doing the job right. I will also be publishing my far less expensive but highly comprehensive guide, 'Cruise Magic: how to make a great living performing magic on cruise ships.' I am also re-releasing my the first video of my 'Perfect for Pros' video, '20210s' I think each project has a very real reason for being in the format it is presented in. Next I plan to create a really inexpensive augmented and updated ebook of my favorite columns from Magic New Zealand to be published and distributed via iBooks. I would like to thank all the pioneers of introducing magic to the digital age for the influence they have had on my ideas of presenting magic to the magic community. We live in exciting and rewarding times. Email me at nicklewin1@mac.com -------------------------------------------- 8. Multi-Tasking - #253 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com In this day and age, the concept of multi-tasking has become the big fad. The more you can do at the same time, the better off you will be and the faster you will accomplish things. Every day we see folks racing to do multiple tasks at the same time. I do think that the idea of multi-tasking is anything new. It certainly has been around for centuries in various forms. Ever since someone decided they could accomplish things faster by doing 2 things at the same time, multi-tasking has been a way of life for many. We all do it in various formats whether we realize it or not. The world keeps moving faster and technology moves along with it. There tends to be this need to do things at a greater rate and accomplish more and more even though there still is just 24 hours in a day. However, I feel when it comes to running one's magic business, multi-tasking can actually be a hindrance then a help. It is hard to focus on any task at hand and devote full attention to it when the mind is being pulled in 2 directions. Sure you may get things done faster, but is it really better? Is it really giving your all or your best effort? Mulit-tasking can actually be thought of more as a distraction. The basis for success is a combination of goal setting with FOCUSED tasking. A task without a goal is like heading on a journey without having a clue where you're going. Likewise, a goal without a task overwhelms the mind. The success of my marketing is the combination of creating and writing down goals. The goals are both short term and long term and are written with the notion that they can be obtainable. It is important to write these goals down and to define them as best as you can. The more defined they are, the more focuses they become in your mind. There is power in writing things down. When you write, your brain cannot help but to recall and remember things clearer. Once the goals have been written, they need to be posted and displayed so you see them every single day. Force yourself into a habit of looking at them before you start your day. This helps you to always stay the course and to know where your destination is. Now remember I said that a goal without tasks is a lost cause. Goals can be overwhelming to most because they seem so difficult to achieve. Tasks are the stepping stones one employs to reach any goal (whether short or long term). I write down tasks in Ever note as daily tasks, weekly tasks and monthly tasks. These tasks get updated daily. Some get erased as they are done while others get added. The idea is that it is always evolving. However, the importance and power behind this goal and task based system is that I never allow myself to multi-task. I spend my efforts solely on one task at a time and accomplishing that task at hand. By doing so I remain 100% focused. You can think of it as taking one step at a time. If you take those steps, you are sure to 1) not fall down and 2) get to where you are going. So you may think of it as "focus-tasking". Focus tasking is the ability to focus on one task at hand and accomplishing that task with a focused mind and with a goal in your head that the task is aimed at getting you to. Now by having my goals written and my tasks written in Ever note, I can always go back to it every day. I can clearly see what I need to do and I avoid the feeling of being lost. The task list helps me to always move forward. It really is an amazing thing. Many feel mult-tasking gets more done quicker. In essence it does the opposite. The mind accomplishes things much better when it is given a single task to accomplish. It understands better the idea of doing one thing and being able to do it well. Give it a try. I am sure you will see that "Focus-Tasking" will get you much closer to reaching the goals you are really after. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Please check out my many ebooks and books at my product site at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com. It would be most appreciated. Thank you. Kyle -------------------------------------------- 9. Anthony Darkstone Brook in Conversation with John Palfreyman - Part 7 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: An impressive who's Who List . I'm delighted to say I have had the pleasure of meeting some of these great folk & they all rated/rate you highly. You still continued in Scouting . JP: Oh yes I did .Davenports had moved to Great Russell Street and I joined the band of "Saturday Morners". Patrick Page provided me with many of my "NOW" antiquarian magic props, from the famous second hand cabinet. Still involved with the Scout Movement, we now lived in Streatham, I eventually took on the task of Assistant County Commissioner for the Scout County of Greater London South. In 1965/66 I headed a team which organised "South Sixty- six" a huge rally at Crystal Palace Recreation Centre, opened by The Chief Scout Sir Charles MacClean it involved over 20,000 Scouts Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Rovers and Rangers, and attended by over 30,000 members of the public By this time Joan and I had adopted two boys Martin and Robin. They went to a school in Streatham where I wrote and part produced a couple of plays for one of the Teachers the most outstanding one being a version of The Nutcracker Suite, and for this I built a Christmas Tree which grew from about 3 feet up to 9 feet. This effect getting a lot of applause. About this time Ralph Reader asked me if I would do a Magic Spot in a show that he was putting on at Central Hall Westminster for the Handicapped members of the Scout Movement. It turned out that the spot was to be the penultimate one with my act commencing on the full stage, and then for the last 5 minutes performing in front of the Main Curtain whilst "The Gang" were positioned on stage for the finale. I had a horrible thought - - - - (Who was going to move my props from the stage and look after them whilst I was "Front of Curtain"). On the Tuesday prior to the show I asked the Teacher "Dorothy Savage" for whom I had written the plays if, as a favour, she would come to the show and look after the props. I explained it was a simple job, and she said yes.. that was in 1968. She became a close friend of the Family and later my assistant at many magic shows, and eventually when my wife Joan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Dorothy was a great help to the family. ADB: A timely incident of sorts lead to a focus on children's Magic shows. JP: Ah yes Tony I know where you are leading me . One of my duties as Assistant County Commissioner was to attend many Scout and Church Garden Fetes, and I remember one occasion with my two sons when having attended three in one day where we had seen three different magicians entertaining, my sons said how boring it was seeing almost the same tricks at each Fete. This led me to put together a children's show which did not include many of the-run-of-the-mill dealers' magic for children. Now my magical activities were beginning to concentrate more on entertaining children. Terry Herbert came into the picture as my agent and through him I worked in many prestigious venues. The President of The Magic Circle, the late Francis White invited me to join The Magic Circle, and eventually for many years served on the Council, where at one time I was responsible for running the Saturday monthly Concerts, Organising Dealers Day, helping at Collectors Day, Stage Managing The Young Magician of the Year, as well as doing Lectures and appearing in shows at and for The Magic Circle. I joined The Northern Magic Circle becoming in 1999 its President which caused comment "How come a Southerner is President?" I always replied that "I was still a Bloody Minded Northerner". British Ring No. 25 of The International Brotherhood of Magicians was the next society that I joined, and from then to date I have been on the Committee, Chief Steward, Stage Managed the Stage Competition and The Children`s Showtime, Organised the Stage Competition, assistant to Tony Shelley for the Dealer`s Fair, and took over the Flag Ceremony at the Civic Receptions. I became its President in the year 2000. then, with the sudden death of the Secretary Tony Shelley, John Pye became Secretary I became Assistant Secretary. Back to John Field! In 1991, he called a meeting of any who were interested in forming a select magic club, I was one of the 17 founder members of the prestigious Surrey Society of Magicians, and chairman for 9 years, it now has a membership of around 70, When I moved away from Orpington to Shropshire I was made an Honorary Life Member. Other Honorary memberships have been accorded to me by: - The Medway Magical Society, and a The Thanet Society of Magicians. It was a proud moment for me when Francis White called me to be a Member of The Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star. A resume of my magic includes, lectures to most of the Major Magical Societies, including a lecture on the History of Children's Magic at one of the Collectors Days. The writing of a book "Magic in a Game" which is a book of Games, and Stunts, published by the then famous Supreme Magic Co, for which I Emceed all but one of their many Supreme Super Days. End - Part 7 -------------------------------------------- 10. Magician Accused Of Killing Wife -------------------------------------------- Message by David Jones Prosecutor OKs filing of parricide raps against magician accused of killing wife By: Niña Calleja Philippine Daily Inquirer MANILA, Philippines-Unless he can pull off a hat trick, a magician may end up being charged with the death of his wife. A prosecutor has recommended the filing of parricide charges against magician Allan de Paz, popularly known on television as Alakim, who is being held in a police detention cell after he told the police that his wife reportedly committed suicide by shooting herself in the chest last week. In a two-page inquest disposition released Tuesday afternoon, Senior Assistant Marikina City Prosecutor Orven Ontalan said De Paz could be responsible for his wife's death. At the same time, he dismissed the magician's earlier sworn statements, describing these as "self-serving." No bail was recommended for the 32-year-old magician, a grand finalist in the "Pilipinas Got Talent" competition in 2010 who also appeared in some shows on ABS-CBN. De Paz earlier told the police that his 34-year-old wife, Maricar, shot herself in the chest at around 3 a.m. on April 3 as they were arguing inside a vehicle in front of their house in Barangay Parang, Marikina City. The alleged suicide of Maricar, a department manager of St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig City, happened hours after she held a surprise birthday party for him at a bar on Timog Avenue, Quezon City. "From the circumstances at hand and with the admission of the respondent that he and his spouse were engaged in an argument, the only possible conclusion would be the fact that indeed the respondent was the person responsible for his wife's death," Ontalan said. He added that De Paz, being the lawful owner of the gun used by Maricar, ought to be responsible for the firearm's possession and safety. Ontalan took note that although De Paz tested negative for gunpowder burns, this was not conclusive enough to prove that he did not shoot his wife. In an earlier interview, De Paz told the Inquirer that he was leaving it to the court to decide on the matter. He said it has been difficult for him to mourn his wife's death and, at the same time, endure his stay in jail. "I can't explain what I'm feeling," he added. -------------------------------------------- 13. 31st New Zealand International Magicians Convention -------------------------------------------- Christchurch New Zealand Labour Weekend 2012 (19/10/2012 to 22/10/2012) Convention will start on Friday night 19th October and finishes on Monday 22nd October at 2.30pm.
