Dean Gunnarson Locked Inside a Tomb of Ice in China --------------------------------------------- Message by Dean Gunnarson Escape Artist Dean Gunnarson to be Chained and Locked in a Tomb of Ice and must escape before being crushed by a 10 ton bus loaded with Explosives dangling over head on Live TV in China Xining, Qinghai, China Jan 4, 2012: International daredevil and extreme escape artist Dean Gunnarson is currently high in the Mountains in China preparing for what will be his toughest challenge in his long and dangerous career. Locked and chained by the Chinese military inside of a tomb of ice on a frozen lake high in the mountains in China. A 10 ton bus loaded with explosives will be raised above him by a crane and then, Gunnarson will have exactly 100 seconds ( an important number in China) before the bus will explode and drop on him from a timer, crushing the ice tomb and him if he is inside. Dean will attempt this escape on a frozen lake that is the largest in all of China. It is located about 100 kilometers west of the provincial capital of Xining at 3,205 m (10,515 feet) above sea level in a depression of the Tibetan Plateau in the traditional Tibetan province of Amdo, located between Tibet and Mongolia. This escape is extremely dangerous because of the cold but even more so from the high evaluation and lack of oxygen this high up. "I have been here for a few days training for this escape but the air being so thin has caused me to get altitude sickness" said Gunnarson. "The lack of air and trying to do even small things just leaves me grasping for breath. This is like nothing I have ever encountered before." This will be Gunnarson's very own 1 hour TV show and will be broadcast across China Live on Sunday January 8, 2012. The escape will be witnessed by millions of viewers across the country that will tune in to see the outcome of his death-defying escape; one way or the other..... If Dean is successful the Chinese Government will present him with an Award proclaiming him " The World's Top Escape Artist" for his over 200 live and various TV shows in China witnessed by many hundreds of millions Chinese people in the last decade. Dean Gunnarson has attempted escapes while dangling by his toes 726 feet over Hoover Dam in Las Vegas, he's been chained and thrown out of an airplane 13,500 feet in the air in Japan, locked in a car and placed in a car crusher in Los Angeles, locked in a barrel underwater with over a 100 sharks and stingrays in China, hung over 130 man eating alligators in the swamps of Florida and escaped after being locked in straight jackets hanging from a crane attached to a burning rope in India, Venezuela, Iceland, and Egypt. Gunnarson holds two world records for escaping, as well as being seen on television in over 165 countries worldwide. Dean continues his "Bound For Danger World Tour" becoming the most watched escape artist in History!!! John Cornelius Alive And Well -------------------------------------------- Message from John Cornelius (US) I just wanted to put an end to several rumors that I have heard. Number one: I am alive and well. Number two: Yes I am still in business after thirty five years. I just took a break from magic after all of the knock off guys appeared in the last ten years. Best, John Cornelius -------------------------------------------- 5. Remarkable Magic. #15 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) A few new, New Year's Resolutions. At this time of year it is certainly a nice exercise to come up with seven resolutions for the upcoming year. I thought I would share them with our readers. Your job is to decide which are serious and which are not! 1 Throw away all the silks in my act that have frayed edges on them or weird stains in them. Part two of this resolution is to make sure that any rope I use in my act looks brand new and fresh. This is a cheap and easy way to subtly improve the act. I should also remake my tossed deck too, well, maybe that can wait another year. Should I replace my thumb tip too? I just got it really nicely broken in-dam, I probably should. 2 Keep performing David Regal's 'Restored Credit' trick on every occasion possible. The fastest, flashiest and most eye-popping piece of magic I have added to my repertoire in a long time. It was a great holiday present from my pal ESP Lodge----thanks SP! On a similar note I had better re-make my set of 'Extreme Burn' bills having spent the hundreds involved in the last version I constructed. Note to self-make it with $20's this time so that I am less likely to spend them on a visit to the 'Apple Chapel.' 3 Time to re shoot and edit my promotional video. 6 minutes is too long now, what ever happened to people actually wanting to know what you do in the show? I should probably re-Photoshop my 8X10's to look a couple of pounds skinnier and a few years younger. This resolution cut's out the normal eat less/better and exercise more one that usually hits my list. 4 Cut out the extra 'hack' lines that have snuck into my act due to laziness and that spirit of malaise that Obama assures me has overtaken our country. Try and continue putting a new joke into the act for every show, however, remember to cut those old 'comfortable' but dated ones. 5 Keep in better touch with some of my oldest and dearest friends in magic. You figure they will be around forever, but it just doesn't work that way. I must also make some new friends and learn to appreciate them as much as some of the giants in magic I have been blessed to know in my first 40 plus years in magic. Maybe it is time to finally discard Ken Brooke's '11th Commandment' about avoiding spending time with magicians, as they will mess with my performing skills for lay audiences. 6 As an addendum to resolution 5, I will start to perform at magic conventions and lecture to magic groups on a regular basis. I have a lot of very good and practical information to share. It is time to start doing it. The New Zealand Magic Convention later this year is a great start to this policy. 7 Stop being negative about the 'Baffling Bra' trick when I write my columns (I'm not changing the way I feel about it---just what I write!) and stop making unnecessary swipes at Franz Harary and Steve Wyrick, no---let's not go too far! Happy New Year! Email me at nicklewin1@mac.com -------------------------------------------- 6. New Year's Resolutions - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com The clock ticks down, the Champaign pours and people everywhere cheers and screams and kiss their loved ones. No it is not the Super bowl...it's New Years! The New Year is upon us and it is time to celebrate the past years accomplishments. It is a time to reflect on the memories. It is also usually a time when a lot of entertainers simply take some time off or enjoy a typically slower pace of the year. Perhaps taking a vacation or simply taking it easy for a while before things ramp up again. However, it also is a time for resolutions. The promise to go to the gym only to forget about it 2 weeks later. Making resolutions is always a good thing, but you have to stick with it to make any progress. But how many of you take time to make resolutions for your magic business? How many of you sit down and really think about the year past and make goals for the coming year? It is fine to take time to rest and enjoy life. We all need to do that from time to time. However, too many times entertainers do not spend the effort to really 1) evaluate the last year and 2) set goals and resolutions for the year ahead. Both of these are extremely important if you want to run a successful business. There is a reason why it is called show business. A show without any business sense doesn't go very far. To run a business successfully you first need to know where you have come from before you can seek where you want to go. In other words it makes sense to take time to evaluate the past year. Look at what was accomplished and what was not. Evaluate what went right and what went wrong. It is also a time to crunch the final numbers. You should be tracking number of shows, how much you got per show, what markets you performed at and how effective marketing campaigns were. It is time to check your website stats for the year and determine how folks found out about your show. All of these are important to really get a final assessment for the year past. One cannot set realistic goals unless one has a starting point in which to base them off of. A lot of my goals for the New Year come directly off of what I am seeing when I run my reports of the year past. This allows me to set realistic expectations. One of the most common mistakes people run into is the fact that they make goals that are not based upon anything. It is fine to want to make 50k a year. However, it is unrealistic if your past year you only made 2k. Doing a past year evaluation allows you to see clearly the big picture. You can then set goals for the New Year that you feel is a logical step up and in a direction that makes sense based on proven data. You not only want a goal, but you also want to set a way or means in which you feel you can reach that goal. In other words, what action are you going to take to get yourself there? Taking direct actions upon a set of written goals is one of the single best things you can do to seek the success you want to achieve. So spend some time this week to evaluate the past year, set up goals for the New Year and get ready to take direct action to the success that is possible for you in 2012. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Blue and Gold! Tony Brook in Conversation with Ray Parker #2 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: So, it is a family DNA thing . showbiz is in your blood . RP: Absolutely! I know that you know exactly what I mean Tony. The performance, the performer, the audience. Hard to put into precise words but those like you and I know exactly what I mean by that enduring love affair and the need to perform, to entertain. To need that applause. It is not an ego thing and then again it is; it is not about you, it is about the audience, it is about you and the audience. You have written many articles yourself Tony on Performance & Presentation and we have spoken about that a few times. It doesn't apply just to Magic. It applies to all performances. Magic however demands more from a performer. ADB: It certainly does. I agree totally. Ray, you came into Magic quite late in your career as an Entertainer ... How did that get started? RP: I had been buying balloons from another magician for my balloon sculpture routine and Jack Mellor a Vancouver magician had just taken over the franchise at his Magic store. Just before Christmas 1979, as he made up my order Jack asked, "Why don't you put some magic into your kid's show Ray." I replied "I would love to be a magician, but my hands are too small." (Yes, I really was that green.) Jack said "My hands are small, I have arthritis and I've been a magician for years, I'll sell you a magic routine, teach you to do it, practice it till you do it well and put it in your show, I'll guarantee you will become a magician." The routine he sold me was Professor Cheer. ABD: I hear that within a few days you started using it .. RP: That's right Tony, the following weekend I was working a breakfast with Santa at a Hudson Bay store as Krackers the Clown with my youngest son as a partner. I performed the routine modified to suit my character and personality. It was the highlight of the show, in fact while my son was performing the next act, the organizer of the show came into the dressing room and said they had received requests for me to do it again and I actually performed the routine twice on that occasion. ADB: Hooked? RP: I'll say hook, line & sinker. The following Monday I went to Jack Mellor's Magic store and with expert advice from my mentor, I purchased as much magic as I could afford. I set about to design a magic show that used as many of my talents as possible. Keeping in mind a quotation I had recently come across in my researching anything I could read about magic, "Robert-Houdin's oft quoted suggestion that "a magician is an actor playing the part of a magician." ADB: .and that is exactly what you did ... RP: Yes Tony. As you and others who know me well know, I have the soul of an actor and I love to entertain. Yes it is my job but it is also an integral part of me. I made a very conscious decision that was what I would do & created a character that used these new skills, using jokes and acting skills from a lifetime of performing, most important to me using as much comedy as was possible. End of Part 2 -------------------------------------------- 8. Spanish Sensation, Dani Daortiz, Set To Rock IMX! -------------------------------------------- Message by Craig Mitchell It's a brand new year ... and in just 4 short months Las Vegas is going to be invaded with some of magic's finest performers from across the globe as IMX 2012 begins. The critics rave, the pros are in awe and you'll have the opportunity of learning firsthand from this incredible performer LIVE at IMX 2012. We're working around the clock to pull out all the stops ... and incredible it is going to be! If you haven't yet registered - hurry ... time is running out. South Tyneside International Magic Convention 2012 -------------------------------------------- Message by Martin Duffy (UK) South Tyneside International Magic Convention 2012 Friday 9th to Sunday 11th March Just added Markus Beldig and Robert Temple The line-up is David Regal ~ USA David Regal is a television writer, creator of effects for magicians, and two-time Academy of Magical Arts Lecturer of the Year. Currently, he sits on the Board of Trustees of Hollywood's Magic Castle. His background is live comedy, as a member of the main company of Chicago City Limits, and since moving to the Los Angeles area he has served as a head writer for Nickelodeon's Rugrats, and has written for an array of sitcoms. Magic of his design is performed around the world. Rob Torres ~ USA For the past two decades Rob Torres has travelled to over 45 countries performing in theatres, circuses, varieties, galas, TV and film. His performances at the Budapest, Moscow and Monte Carlo circus festivals have all won him awards, but more than that, laughter! Rob has masterfully blended his formal training in theatre, circus arts, and pantomime together to create genuinely fun and memorable acts. From the moment he walks on stage or into the ring, Rob steps into the hearts of his audience and keeps them laughing long after he is gone. International comedian Rob Torres can be understood everywhere, without saying a word. Whether he's taking a photo, setting the table, or just sitting down, you're guaranteed to have fun. Rob has a great way of finding absurdity in common everyday tasks. If you're looking for laughter, this is where you'll find it. See for yourself why Rob Torres is the International Man of Mirth!!! Levent ~ USA Levent started out at a very young age performing throughout his native New York City. At the age of 17 he was awarded 1st prize for Stage Magic at the International Brotherhood of Magicians' National Convention. This led him to have a 2 year engagement at Resorts International Casio Hotel in Atlantic City, where he was twice nominated "Best Act in a Production Show". In 2005 he had the honour to perform at the Magic Circle Centenary Celebrations in London. In 2006 Levent was invited to perform at the "Society of American Magicians Annual Salute to Magic" at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in New York. Christian Schenk ~ Germany Christian believes that in 2004 a client's trade show themed "IT's Magic" brought him back into magic as he printed his first deck of playing cards. What he thought was just a new hobby turned out to be the most serious (and fun) part of his life. He believes that his most exciting experience was being invited to the invitation only FFFF (Fechter's Finger Flicking Frolic) where he was asked to do a lecture about his creations so far. Markus Beldig ~ Germany There are phenomena between heaven and earth that can be explained. He is none of them. Markus Beldig is Germany's leading mentalist, the master of the sixth sense. In a magical show he bewitches our minds and our senses, makes us hold our breath. He, the mentalist, sees with our eyes, our minds reads and looks into our futures. His show begins where our imagination ends. And what does he need for all this? Nothing more than a chair, a table and our thoughts. With only a few means he makes your event unique and exclusive. His show will appeal to all those who believe they`re spoiled when it comes to entertainment. You will experience a mind-blowing event. Look forward to a thrilling performance - you will get more than just answers. Mat Ricardo ~ UK One of the UK's most in-demand comedy variety performers, and the first cabaret performer to ever win the Herald Angel award for excellence in theatre, Mat Ricardo has spent the last 25 years touring the world with his unique, astonishing and hilarious act. Reviving the almost-lost art of the gentleman juggler, Mat blends dazzling feats of dexterity and balance with the wit and timing of a skilled stand-up comedian. He is known internationally for his signature trick - the reverse tablecloth pull - where he puts a tablecloth on a table, underneath all the objects. But this is just one of the many unique and astonishing tricks that he has created. He has performed at countless international theatre and comedy festivals, on some of the finest cabaret, variety and burlesque stages in the world, in comedy clubs, and on cruise ships throughout the seven seas. He has dozens of television appearances to his name, has entertained for corporate clients too numerous to mention and has performed for members of the British Royal Family. Recently his critically acclaimed on-man show "Three Balls and a New Suit" played to sell out audiences in London and at the Edinburgh festival. High Jinx ~ UK High Jinx (Michael Jordan and Tamsyn Sear) are professional variety entertainers, their acts are a thrilling mix of Magic, Illusion, Escapology and Circus skills delivered in a way that will leave you amazed, puzzled even scared but above all entertained. At the Opus Convention on the Isle of Man, none other than David Williamson said of the act "The funniest thing I've seen in years.
