The headliners this year were Chuck Jones & Company (Mystina, Tara and Norman) from Hollywood, USA and Kristof from Melbourne, Australia. Pleased to report that Ross Skiffington (Australia) is now out of hospital and home after having a brain aneurism six weeks ago. Remarkable Magic. #13 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) The Magic Castle -none too'Lite'. Everyone in the magic world has been worried and concerned over the extent and scope of the damage to the Magic Castle in Hollywood that occurred recently. While the fire damage was considerably less than it could have been, as is so often the case, the water damage was a very real problem and has been causing the greatest concern. I took the opportunity to visit the Castle last week and see how things were working out during what is being referred to as the 'Magic Castle Lite' phase of our beloved clubhouse's refurbishing and eventual full scale re-opening. I am glad to say that while business was far from 'as usual' it was very functional and very, very busy. My visit was on a Sunday night and the place was as packed as it possible could have been. In fact I'm guessing any visiting fire department official might have had an instant desire to start counting heads and exits! Maybe the reduced 10 Dollar cover and 20 Dollar buffet could have helped. In fact the buffet looked great and I might eat there a little more often at those prices! A couple of drinks at 22 Dollars are pretty pricey additions to any evening and should help defray any losses in a regular reduction in the food prices. The guests were checked in at the front desk but then entered the Castle through the side entrance to the lower area next to the library. The line for the buffet was long and seating limited and lots of guests were perched at weird spots, eating what looked like great food. The shows were confined to the Peller Theatre, the Parlour and the Palace and they ran very smoothly. It was a delight to see Jamy Ian Swiss perform in the Peller Theatre, I was very impressed by his recent television appearance on 'The Craig Ferguson Show,' and watching him do 30 minutes of highly skilled, smoothly presented and deceptively relaxed looking card magic was a real highlight for me. This is the kind of specialized performance that you can really enjoy and admire based on its true magical skills. I thoroughly enjoyed watching, watching for and sometimes failing to see sleight-of-hand moves that I knew must have happened during the seamlessly constructed routines. Bravo, this was pure magic, presented in a slick and skilled manner that would bring a glow to any lover of 'real close-up'. Jamy's show might have been slightly better served if his appearance had proceeded as scheduled in the Close-Up Gallery, however his sophisticated and polished performance skills made his highly specialized show a winner with everyone in the room, even if their viewing was slightly less optimal than the Close-Up Gallery would have allowed. If you love good card magic don't miss this guy! I sadly had to miss the appearance of my long-term friend Paul Green in the Parlour due to scheduling problems, but heard enough raves from visitors to know that he delivered the goods in his normal immaculate and heavy hitting manner. This guy is pure-pro all the way and always a credit to the magic world. Paul is one of the busiest pros in Los Angeles and achieves this by knowing his craft inside out. The Palace was a quirkier affair. I was delighted to see the legendary Jim Steinmeyer perform two rare and arcane magic illusions. His scholarly and professorial presentation of these gems was the kind of thing that reminds you that the Castle really is a club for magicians. Frankly, I would have enjoyed a longer set as his segment was over all to briefly for my taste. When you entice one of the greatest minds in magic to give a rare public performance, I could use more of the show dedicated to the unique opportunity. Performing the major portion of the show in the Palace was the relentlessly upbeat and smiling Alex Ramon. The crowd really enjoyed Ramon's show and his experience with Ringling Brothers and the Disney touring magic show was highly evident. One tiny quibble, why follow Steinmeyer performing a re-creation of the still mindboggling Jarrett's 'Sawing Mystery' with a similar box illusion that looked big enough in size to be the packing case for the tiny cabinet that made the Jarrett illusion so astonishing? Other effects featured by Ramon were an update to the Die Box, involving an iPad, which rather overplayed the Lie Detector App involved, again proving that less really can be more. Much more effective was his introduction of a cute twist involving an iPhone into a rather standard Crystal Casket illusion. The highlight of Ramon's act was a very effective sequence of magic involving a light bulb and a paper bag. It was a delightful routine that showed a great deal of originality and audience pleasing power. However, I would have gladly traded a little of his performance time for one more 'forgotten gem' from the mind of Jim Steinmeyer. Over all, the entire evening proved that even functioning as 'Castle Lite' there was enough of everything needed to present the punters with a highly enjoyable experience. On a personal level, one of my highlights was standing at Valet parking after the show with 'Card Guru' Howard Hamburg discussing the exact quantity, quality and variety of passes used by Jamy Ian Swiss! Hey, sometimes a double undercut really just doesn't do the job as well.... Email me at nicklewin1@mac.com -------------------------------------------- 5. Establishing Price in a New Market - #237 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Establishing a price for any new market is always a challenge for sure. You do not want to undersell yourself but at the same time you do not want to set a price so high that work does not come in. Word travels fast in any area you live in. If there are other entertainers in your area, you also need to be mindful of them as well so that everyone benefits but not by undercutting others. One of the first thing I always do is to reach out to other magicians in the area by talking to them, calling them or visiting any local clubs. I always say being open and honest is your best road to travel. I never liked anyone telling someone else to call another magician and pretend to be a client. It just seems wrong to me and unethical in nature. I think there is power in simply being open and honest. If you are honest with fellow magicians, then I think most will appreciate it and respect you for your honesty. Simply spell it out for them that you are starting up in the area and wanted to ask a price range so that you are not undercutting anyone in the area but are also within a reasonable price range. Now I state it as "price range" so that you are not asking the person what do they charge. Many magicians will be able to give you a price range and assist you in that way. However, they may be a bit more guarded to tell you their personal fees. If you are the only magician in your area, or simply do not have connections to magic clubs, then you have to go about finding prices in a different fashion. First you need to define the market or markets in which you want to perform in. Then what I tell folks to do is to find similar entertainers that work those markets. They do not have to be magicians. They can be jugglers, musicians etc. The idea is that you want an entertainer you feel does the same type of market you want to pursue. Then you can go about calling them or touching base with them. In this fashion, many are open to talk with you because you are not so much of a threat to them. Many will appreciate your honesty and also there is the possibility of networking with these folks. You can both agree to help each other out and refer shows in different directions. So by asking folks that are already in the markets, you can at least establish a price range for certain areas. I usually try and get as much data from folks as I can. The more I have, the more I can really get a good idea of the low and highs of the price range market. You will notice that as you ask people, the ranges in prices will be pretty drastic at times. Just write down all the information and make sure to thank everyone who helps you. Then it usually is a good rule of thumb to stay more towards the middle range of the prices that you hear as averages. You do not want to be too low, but you are also new enough that the higher price range may not be ideal for you yet. Another idea that works well for finding prices, is to check out party stores as well as party places in your area. Party Stores are good because they are so used to hearing customers talk about shows and finding talent. They may not only be able to help with going rates, but they may be more than happy to carry your cards or materials in exchange for you telling folks about their party store. It becomes a win-win situation. As for party places, this information you can easily find a lot online. These places are the kind that host parties at their locations. They usually offer food, games and rides perhaps. Now usually these places tend to be priced a bit high. But this can give you an idea of a price that some folks are paying in the area and you can base your fee off of this by lowering it slightly. This way you become more competitive. With all of this in mind, I also like to always work in several package options whenever I start in a new market. This simply means I am not selling them on one show package at one price. I create several show packages that cover a lower, middle and a higher price. Obviously as the price on the package goes up, I provide more stuff for the party and more add ons that come with it. Now the reason this is smart thinking is that it allows you to test the waters in a more safe setting. You are giving the prospect more changes of saying YES to you. One single package at one price becomes a yes or no game for folks. Either they buy it or they do not. However, you do not end up gaining shows this way and you may not have any clue why folks are not booking. With several packages, you can really start to see any trends that come in. You can see which package most folks are tending to go with and over the months you can then take this information and adjust accordingly down the road. If you see a lot of people going for your high end package, then you know you can raise your prices over time as you have not yet hit the happy medium range. If people are all going for the lower priced package, then perhaps your prices may be too high for that area and you may want to test it again at different price ranges. But the best advice I can give to anyone is to get out there, use this information and test the waters. But it is important as you test the waters you evaluate as you go along. The data will start to come in over time and you can start to utilize this data to see where the market price really is for you and the types of shows you do. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Tony Brook In Conversation With Ray Parker #5 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: You also did some stunts and falls way back then and that training was to serve you well later .. RP: I also did some comedy dance routines and some acrobatic stunts involving falls and using a chair as a prop. I continued to use acrobatic stunts and falls in a number of different acts through the rest of my career up until I was about 55 years old. Due to a shortage of teachers we had to leave school at 14 and join the wartime workforce. I went into aircraft production. We both also joined the Army Cadets and registered at night school. Very soon we joined a drama group at night school acting in plays and also began to put on regular variety performances for the army cadets. This continued until joining the armed forces in 1947, I began to appear in shows put on in the camps, finally taking over organizing the shows. ADB: That continued whilst you were in the Service . RP: Yes it did Tony. Whilst in Royal Engineers Army College in Chatham, Kent I joined a theater group at the local YMCA, appearing in variety shows and plays and in 1948 in Kenya, East Africa began organizing and performing troop entertainment. This led to a show called "Sorry Surrey." which toured army camps in Kenya. ADB: You left the Armed Forces in 1949 . RP: Yes Tony. On release from the armed forces in 1949 I began to enter talent competitions. During my service in the army I had developed a comedy impressionist act, this became the one that won "Opportunity Knocks," "Carrol Levis Discoveries and finally top prize in a talent show that ran for 10 weeks at the Wolverhampton Hippodrome. The prize was a sum of money and a theater run. this later led to appearances on BBC Radio and the first night opening of BBC Manchester TV Studios in a show called Top Town. Around that time many variety theaters were closing and many entertainers, (myself included) began to obtain work in the Working Mens Clubs. Working Mens Clubs were social clubs run by factories all over the UK. They were equipped with stages dressing rooms and musical accompaniment for the acts. The pay was good (much better than the theaters). Acts moved to a different club every night, the work was plentiful and for the next 10 years I worked full time at night and still held down a day time job. Many shows I worked were as part of a trio The Parker Brothers, Hal Ray and Peter. We performed variety show, Harmonica, song, comedy skits, impressions, crosstalk acts and a comedy harmonica act known as The Harmonica Maniacs. We also performed at night clubs and theaters. In the 1950s, I also took operatic singing lessons and incorporated it into my act with the Parker Brothers. In the last 3 years before I moved to Canada in 1965 I also began a new act in which I combined standup comedy and lip-sync, I called it Off the Record and it became my most requested act. I also performed as a vocalist and soon I was working a number of gigs with a backup trio, incorporating all my acts in a pub show, which I also emceed and introduced other acts from the audience. End of Part 5 -------------------------------------------- 7. New Patrick Page Book -------------------------------------------- Message by Matthew Field (UK) Four years ago, my friend Patrick Page approached me and asked if I was available to edit a book he was writing. Although I was very busy editing The Magic Circle's magazine, The Magic Circular, how could I say no? I completed my editing duties two years ago and Pat said he'd handle the rest of the production part of the book. He was ill at the time and before he could really get to any of this, he passed away. I told his family that I would complete the rest of the project and make sure the book got published. His children said they wanted to publish it themselves. For the next two years I completed assembling photos and drawings for illustrations and my friend, the talented Michael Albright, said he would handle the book's design. About a week ago the finished book arrived, "Magic -- Page by Page", and I hope Pat would have been pleased. It's 8 x 10 ins., hard cover with dustjacket, almost 330 pages long, filled with hundreds of Pat's creations, some old ("Easy Money", "Topit"), many new. It's filled with photos of Pat and I've tried to ensure that his unique voice remained as he described and explained things. The book is being sold exclusively by his children's company, http://www.PatrickPageMagic.co.uk where you'll find more details and information about ordering. -------------------------------------------- 8. The book sold out at my lectures but if you'd like to grab a copy for Christmas you can get it in either hardcover ($50) or paperback ($35) by going here http://australianmagician.com/news/565-timeless-magic-now-on-sale.html Review by Ed Underwood "Tim Ellis' magic has always lived up to two key words: practical and powerful. His creations have high visual impact on the audience, leave plenty of room for personal creativity and at least for me, quickly become favorites that rise to the top of my "A" list of repeat material. Thank you Tim for your sharing your years of hard work and innovation!" -------------------------------------------- 15. 31st New Zealand International Magicians Convention 2012 -------------------------------------------- Labour Weekend 2012 (19 October to 22 October 2012) in Christchurch, New Zealand We have four headliners confirmed Nick Lewin, Mark Mason and Ken Scott.
