Problems With Plagiarism And Illegal Unauthorized Production --------------------------------------------- Message by Dirk Losander & Luna Shimada (US) Dear Friends in Magic, First we want to thank you all very much for your continued support in our company and products. We work very hard to raise the bar and continue to bring you new innovations and improvements and additions to what has now become one Magic's favorite illusions of our time, The Losander Floating TableT I am writing to you all because I am in need of your attention, and your support to help me raise awareness of a rising problem that is happening in our industry right now. Many of you are Inventors of original magic yourselves and so I know you can understand how damaging this has become for us all. I have been dealing with a continuous problem with plagiarism and the illegal unauthorized production of my various models of my Losander Floating TableT. It has now been brought to my attention that a specific company (although there are others in China too) called China Magic at www.52magic.com has already copied my newest model, The Trinity which I barely just released earlier this year in 2011, and not only that, they are using my photos and my video media to advertise it! This is not only an illegal direct infringement but it is also misleading the consumers by giving them the impression that they are purchasing my original product. They are also selling it at a third of the price than what it retails for and this is affecting the business of your local dealers as well. Also I can tell you that these tables are poorly manufactured and mass produced with inferior materials and workmanship and can barely be performed properly! I was approached some years ago by this company as they wanted to retain legal rights to manufacture my Tables their wants and needs were completely unreasonable so I refused and told them at that time, in writing, that they do not have permission to reproduce and manufacture or sell any of my products and specifically the Floating Table. Well not only did they not listen but they have been crossing boundaries everywhere and not just with my products either. They are trying to dominate the market and with their extremely reduced pricing, they can to a great degree. Overseas litigations and law suits are expensive and complicated and the only way I feel we can be effective is to stand together as a community and raise awareness of this unethical conduct. I have built this company on my back and I have been a two man operation all these years, bringing you quality, one of kind and unique hand made products, yes it is a rare and dying craft but please, help me keep it alive for just a little longer. If we let all the beauty and power of our personal craft disappear, what are we left with? You buy something from me; you are not just getting a magic prop. You are getting a piece of me, my own personal magic, made with my own two hands, my sweat, and hard work and time and meticulous craftsmanship. This is what you are paying for. No two Tables, or boxes or any item you have ever purchased from me are the same. Everyone is unique and has its own special character. This is true Wizardry, my friends. So in the spirit of the true Magi, I am creating an organization whose mission is to support, direct, protect and uphold the integrity of magic inventor worldwide. If any of you wish to join us in our cause and call to action and wish to support and contribute in any manner no matter how small, please go to: www.unitedmagicinventorsorganization.com It is free to join. Please support us and spread the word! In Peace and Resolution Dirk Losander & Luna Shimada ------------------------------------------- 3. David Copperfield To Be Honored Guest At Convention -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler (US) The Society of American Magicians is proud to announce that David Copperfield will be the guest of honor at their national convention in Las Vegas in July 2012. During a Skype phone call from his island home on November 14 , David has graciously accepted our invitation. Producer John Apperson also announced that tickets for the Copperfield show at the MGM Grand will be part of the entertainment package for all those registered at the convention. Here is a convention not to be missed! Great rates at the Golden Nugget- July 23-26, 2012. For the schedule and tentative lineup of performers plus registration information, please visit: www.magicsam.com -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic. #10 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) A funny thing happened on the way to the theater tonight. I was enjoying a Skype conversation with Magic New Zealand's charming (and amazingly skinny!) editor yesterday, I was musing about what to write about that would be of interest to his readers. Alan suggested that I write about some of the things that have gone wrong or really surprised me over my years as a performer. It was a great idea. You can't perform for many years without a disaster or two and I would like to throw this idea out to our readers and if you have any funny stories to share, why not email them to me and we can combine some into future columns. I have a great story about Alan Watson stored up for the future! I have had lots of confusion and disasters during my performing years and often they were a lot funnier looking back on them! They range from the minor to the seriously embarrassing. One of the simplest and easiest to happen was during a corporate after dinner show and it is here that I will begin. I am a bit of a fanatic about arriving early to shows, on this occasion I arrived quite a bit ahead of my scheduled performance. Entering the banquet room, I asked around for the person in charge of the event. I was eventually introduced to a young lady who was the event planner. I explained to her that I would set my props and then be ready to perform when the deserts had been cleared and the coffee served. Having set my props, I began my wait and a short while prior to when I anticipated my performance was due to begin, I left the rear of the banquet room to use the restroom. I always live by Billy McCombs words of wisdom, which were passed on to him by the Duke of Edinburgh, "Always go when you can go-because you never know when you will want to go and you can't go!" Returning from my restroom visit, I made my way through the communal corridor that opened onto the various banquet halls, I observed a highly agitated gentleman pacing back and forth practically wearing a hole in the carpet. As I passed him he practically grabbed me and said, "Thank God you finally arrived!" Thank God indeed. Yes, I had carefully arrived early and then set up my props, and was about to begin a show for an entirely incorrect bunch of executives in totally the wrong room! I rushed into the room in which my props were set and quickly found the party planner and asked her if she was really expecting a show. "No" she said, "I was very surprised but I assumed the hotel had arranged it." I had my props re-packed and shifted to the correct room in double quick time. Curiously enough everything was re-set just about as the coffee cups were being placed on the tables, I was then introduced to the audience, by a still visibly flustered executive, the same man who had found me in the corridor ten minutes before. As I began my show I made eye contact with him and adlibbed, "A funny thing happened to me on the way to the theater tonight." I was pleased to see a brief smile flash across his face, and the show went on to be a great success. I always wondered how the other audience would have enjoyed me. However, I performed in the room with a check in it that had my name on it. Needless to say, in the future, I was always very careful to check the name of the banquet room. I do like that check at the end of my show! Got a funny story? Why not share it with us all by emailing me at nicklewin1@mac.com -------------------------------------------- 5. Marketing - Social Media - #234 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Social Media is HUGE right now. It does not take much for one to see that social marketing is in the main line culture and advertising every single day. How many times in any given day do you see the Facebook icon or the Twitter icon without even trying to look for them? They are everywhere. On any given day, countless numbers of people around the world use Facebook or Twitter (and others) to post, communicate, advertise and have fun. It has become as common a habit as eating breakfast in the morning. It has become a part of our culture. With this in mind, it would be foolish for anyone not to tap into the power of social marketing. One does not need to be a genius with it to start to utilize its power to effectively communicate. First start to look at how it is used by companies all around you? But before you can tap into this marketing tool, you need to develop the content for which you will drive people to. With Facebook, a great thing many are doing is creating Facebook Fan Pages. You can do so for free and it works very well. It is not limited to the number of fans that can link to your fan page. If you look at Coke's Fan page, they have thousands and thousands of fans. The beauty of a Facebook Fan Page is the ability to keep in contact with suspects, prospects and clients at all times at no cost to you. It is extremely easy to do and to maintain. In essence it is a means in which to get any of your marketing messages right into the hands of your target audience quickly, efficiently and at no cost. Consumers buy because they have a need they are trying to find a solution for. If this is the case, when I have a need for I first recall the images and advertising that comes to my mind that solves that need. In other words, your goal is to be the first thing that person thinks of when there is a need for an entertainment solution. Now why does Social Marketing work so well? It allows you with ease to keep your name and brand fresh in the fans minds at all times. Anytime you post to your fan page that information goes out to everyone that liked (joined) your fan page. It does so with a click of a button. What a great way to build relationships with these people over time. It also helps folks to get to know more about you, your services and what you provide? How? Well you not only can post about your shows, but you can also upload photos and videos and have your clients even post reviews etc. Your fans start to see this information and they get to see not only who you are but what you do and what you have done for others. Effective marketing with simplicity and no cost. That is a win-win situation for you and your business. Now you can't just sit there and create a fan page and expect people flocking to you. You need to get the word out. The easiest way to start is by using the tools Facebook gives you to send out invites to people. It is easy to do and allows invites to go out to other Facebook friends but also to any email you give to it. This makes it so easy for people to go to your link, click a button and they are now a fan connected directly to you. You then start to post your Facebook fan page link to your marketing materials. Everything you give out has this information on it. You mention it in your show and you can even have a sign or banner made up that can sit on or near your stage. All are easy and effective means in which to get folks to join and want to join. So do not overlook the power of social marketing. Do not think it is just for the "kids" and not for you. The successful entertainer utilizes any and all tools in which to increase his or her business. Great marketing tool at no cost to reach many people? I call that a winning formula. If you want an example of a Facebook Fan Page, feel free to look at mine at http://www.facebook.com/kyleandkellymagic As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Blue and Gold! Tony Brook In Conversation With Ray Parker #2 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: So, it is a family DNA thing . showbiz is in your blood . RP: Absolutely! I know that you know exactly what I mean Tony. The performance, the performer, the audience. Hard to put into precise words but those like you and I know exactly what I mean by that enduring love affair and the need to perform, to entertain. To need that applause. It is not an ego thing and then again it is; it is not about you, it is about the audience, it is about you and the audience. You have written many articles yourself Tony on Performance & Presentation and we have spoken about that a few times. It doesn't apply just to Magic. It applies to all performances. Magic however demands more from a performer. ADB: It certainly does. I agree totally. Ray, you came into Magic quite late in your career as an Entertainer ... how did that get started ? RP: I had been buying balloons from another magician for my balloon sculpture routine and Jack Mellor a Vancouver magician had just taken over the franchise at his Magic store. Just before Christmas 1979, as he made up my order Jack asked, "Why don't you put some magic into your kid's show Ray." I replied "I would love to be a magician, but my hands are too small." (Yes, I really was that green.) Jack said "My hands are small, I have arthritis and I've been a magician for years, I'll sell you a magic routine, teach you to do it, practice it till you do it well and put it in your show, I'll guarantee you will become a magician." The routine he sold me was Professor Cheer. ABD: I hear that within a few days you started using it .. RP: That's right Tony, the following weekend I was working a breakfast with Santa at a Hudson Bay store as Krackers the Clown with my youngest son as a partner. I performed the routine modified to suit my character and personality. It was the highlight of the show, in fact while my son was performing the next act, the organizer of the show came into the dressing room and said they had received requests for me to do it again and I actually performed the routine twice on that occasion. ADB: Hooked ? RP: I'll say hook, line and sinker. The following Monday I went to Jack Mellor's Magic store and with expert advice from my mentor, I purchased as much magic as I could afford. I set about to design a magic show that used as many of my talents as possible. Keeping in mind a quotation I had recently come across in my researching anything I could read about magic, "Robert-Houdin's oft quoted suggestion that "a magician is an actor playing the part of a magician." ADB: .and that is exactly what you did ... RP: Yes Tony. As you, and others who know me well know, I have the soul of an actor and I love to entertain. Yes it is my job but it is also an integral part of me. I made a very conscious decision that was what I would do and created a character that used these new skills, using jokes and acting skills from a lifetime of performing, most important to me using as much comedy as was possible. Wanting To Make Contact With Japanese Magicians -------------------------------------------- Message by Loch David Crane (US) Magician Loch David Crane and has the opportunity to travel briefly to Japan next year. He would like to hear about when the Magic conventions are, where the magic bars and meetings are, and set up a little tour. He performs a western-themed magic act with authentic Lakota Native American props, stories, and mythology. Crane is an IBM and SAM member, retired university English professor, has over 100 videos on YouTube, and looks forward to making new friends and performing in Japan. ------------------------------------------- 11. John Carey Lecturing At Blackpool Magicians -------------------------------------------- Message by Peter Eldin (UK) John Carey will be lecturing at Blackpool Magicians' Club on Thursday, 24 November. John specialises in magic that is direct, visual and interactive. He does not go for effects that involve long set-ups or dead time and this shows in his work as he performs apparent miracles with cards and coins. John had a reputation as one of the top 'underground' magicians but friends have persuaded him to come 'above ground' to pass on his ideas and techniques to others. He likes all forms of magic but sleight of hand with regular ungaffed objects is closest to his heart. This does not mean that his effects are full of finger breaking moves for they also contain subtleties that any competent magician can master. Even if you are not into close-up his approach to misdirection, timing and routining are worthy of every magician's attention -------------------------------------------- 12. Paul Romhany Heading Back To New Zealand -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany Natalie and I and our 2 month old son Jon-Paul are heading back to New Zealand to set up base on 30th November. We are looking forward to returning back to New Zealand after having been away for the past nine months. It will be back to work with corporate work, theatre performances and cruise ships lined up for 2012. These past few weeks have been incredibly busy as I set up a brand new magic website where, after over a decade of having my products sold in magic shops around the world I have finally set up a website where magicians can now also buy direct. To promote this new site I have some products you can't get anywhere else. Brand New Release Perhaps the most anticipated book for magicians and mentalists alike. This book has been two years in the making and it turned out so big that it will come in two volumes. Volume 1 is now ready and available at this stage ONLY from my website. www.paulromhanymagic.com Here is the new book and the first people in the world to have access are the magicnz e-zine readers. The cost is only $40.00 Mentalism for Young Minds Vl. 1 By Paul Romhany 265 pages - 8.5" x 8.5" - Retail $40.00 (no discount) Paul Romhany has produced the most comprehensive collection of material for performing mentalism for younger minds. Over 265 pages which include a collection of essays on how to perform mentalism for children, plus over forty effects from performers around the world including: Mark Strivings, David Kaye, Tim Mannix, Paul Romhany, Richard Webster, Andrew Gerard, Wayne Rogers, Tony Binarelli,Bev Bergeron, Him Kleefeild, Keith Field, Danny Archer, Andrew Gerard, Jack Dean, Greg Arce, Anthony Lindan, E. Raymond Carlyle, Professor Spellbinder, Matthew Johnson, Tony Chris, Cris Johnson, Reg Blackwood, Ken Ring, Christopher Taylor, Chrisotpher Berry, TC Tahoe, Ozzy D, Magical Michael, Magic George, Ken Dyne, Jasper Blakeley, Ray Roch. This book covers performing mentalism for ages five to fifteen, and is aimed at mentalists and magicians who perform for children and family audiences. "The rest of this book is a treasure trove of fascinating mental effects that your young - and not so young - audiences will enjoy. These wonderful effects are so good that I'm tempted to dust off my old Riccardo outfit and start performing again. I know you'll enjoy this book, and will come back to it again and again in the future. If you have any doubts whatsoever about performing mentalism for children, try one or two of the effects in this book. I know you'll change your mind. Thank you, Paul, for compiling and publishing this valuable book." - Richard Webster "As for kids mentalism. The funny thing is people think of kids three or four years old when you say kids. This is rarely the case, even for regular kids performers. People do not give kids enough credit for being smart. They get mentalism. They get mindreading even at the age of five and six. I do think it can be done and have done it. Now yes, the times I did it the kids were eleven, and up but they get it. They certainly understand when Harry Potter gets a psychic image." - Banachek -------------------------------------------- 14. "The Chamber of Secrets" - Australia -------------------------------------------- Message from Dave Boyd Magic Mountain's Mr. Magic Last Monday 31st October I travelled to Sydney (A round trip of about 800 km) to attend the opening of the new magic venue called "The Chamber of Secrets" in Potts Point. Phil Cass had been chosen to do the honours. A great and very safe choice. Phil never fails to amaze and at the same time amuse the audience. Mark you, if we tried some of his cheek we would end up flat on our back., He picked my wife Trish to assist in one of his tricks. Now, Trish is too shy to even hand out a few envelopes for me while performing a mind reading item. (I thought bad move Phil,) But I should have known better, in no time flat Phil had her almost wetting herself, not with fear, BUT LAUGHTER. I have known Phil for a very long time, I first met him when he was working the tables at Fisherman's Wharf, he was a young fellow, just using a few silks, rope and a thumb tip. I have watched him over the years grow into the mega star he is today. The venue is run by a couple of really nice fellows. I wish them all the best in their new venture. I think Brendon Montana is there very soon. Well worth an evening out, great value at only $20. -------------------------------------------- 15. December Issue Of Genii Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Kaufman Editor Genii Magazine The December issue of Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine, is now in the mail and online for your reading and viewing pleasure. We have more audio and video supplements in our free-to-subscribers digital edition, so make sure to register your email address with us if you're a subscriber so you can take advantage of all we offer every month. Genii continues its 75th Anniversary year with a really big cover story on a really big show: Franz Harary's performance of the double jumbo version of Mega Magic for 30,000 people in an outdoor stadium in Guangzhou, China. It took 53 trucks to haul it all and featured 22 of his illusions. He was flanked by video screens the size of small cities and, yes, there was also a monsoon. Our digital edition has two videos of the show: one backstage and one of the show itself. There are five new Tenyo tricks for 2012, with two by Lubor Fiedler. It's one of Tenyo's best line-ups in many years and we have a write-up of all five tricks, plus a video demo of each in our digital edition. Tenyo has also put out five new Tokyo Disney branded items this year, and I'll discuss those as well. It's been a while since Jim Steinmeyer presented an illusion for you, and in this month's "Conjuring" he explains how to square a circle with a human--an illusion simple to build and perform. The third installment of "Aaron Fisher Teaches Card Magic," a mini-course in magic with the pasteboards, brings you into the world of how to properly hold a break. That may seem like kid's stuff, but I can't tell you how many otherwise expert cardmen can't hold a break properly. David Britland's "Cardopolis" teaches two effects, "Second Sight" is the first, a bit of mentalism that packs minutely and plays tremendously, while the second resurrects a little Paul Rosini. "Lost Horizons" features Max Maven's Stewart-Jamesian riff on putting "lang" and "guage" together with a series of three linguistical mysteries. John Gaughan shows us a rare and beautiful Hofzinser Rose Mirror in "Chamber of Secrets." This month's "Magicana" completes 11 years of Earle Oakes' beautiful drawings appearing in Genii. He illustrated every installment of the column since our first issue in January 1999. Things will not be the same without his lovely lines to illuminate your learning, but carry on we must. David Acer continues his expert stewardship of "Magicana" with five new routines from Bob Farmer, Jay Sankey, Patrick Duffy, Patrik Kuffs, and Harry Lorayne; Genii concludes its eleventh year under its current owners and publishers with our fine circle of critics: Eric Mead on books, Danny Orleans on tricks, and Joe M. Turner on videos. Danny Orleans has contributed his second trick-review-supplement video and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. We also have a video trip to Tenyo's magic shop in Tokyo Disneyland where you can see a demonstration by my friend Yuji Wada, as well as audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer. Jon also contributes a video performance of a very lazy card trick that should fool you. Hope you enjoy all of it and would like to hear when you receive your paper issue by snail mail, or when you have viewed the digital issue online or on your iPad or iPhone. About the Audio and Video Supplements in Genii's digital edition: Thousands of people have downloaded Genii's free iPad and iPhone apps, and the issues on the iPad and iPhone are free to all subscribers as well. We're not greedy at Genii: I feel that when you subscribe to the paper magazine, you should get the digital version free. One of the things I enjoy about our iGenii digital edition of the magazine is the opportunity to include audio and video supplements. As I meet Genii readers at magic conventions, I ask if they've looked at the digital edition and they sometimes say, "I'm a paper guy." Well, even if you prefer to read the paper edition of Genii, the digital iGenii edition offers at least an hour of video in every issue. We give you more than any other independent magazine in magic for your money. And you don't need an iPad or iPhone--you can view the digital edition on any computer--desktop or laptop. Subscriber to Genii for only $56 for one year and you receive: * 12 paper issues delivered to your home. * The current issue online, free to all subscribers, with audio and video extras. (Subscribers can read these issues weeks before the paper issue arrives.) * Access to every single back issue Genii has published from 1936 through December 2008. That's almost 1000 issues! Tens of thousands of columns, tricks, illusions, and articles. And it's all absolutely free to every Genii subscriber. Of course you will have to be on the internet for access, which will be through the Conjuring Arts Research Center. The issues are simple pdf documents which can be read on most electronic devices including newer Kindles, Sony eReaders, Nook, iPhone, iPad and of course any desktop or laptop computer. (So far, unfortunately, tablets running Android cannot read pdf files embedded in a website--we're hoping a patch will be created soon.) Every subscriber will have access to an electronic version of every issue for the duration of his or her subscription. Digital-only subscriptions are available for $56 to residents outside the United States: http://geniistore.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=35&product_id=57 If you are a subscriber and haven't sent us your e-mail address yet, please do so to: genii@geniimagazine.com).
