Very pleased to report that Jim is very much alive and enjoying his retirement days in Tauranga. Broken Wand - John Daniels (US) --------------------------------------------- Message by Michelle Daniel Willbanks forwarded on by Jane Stuart - President J. Marberger Stuart Foundation (DRAGON Awards) "Hi Jane, I am not sure if you remember me, but I am John and Cathy Daniels daughter. I am so sorry to do this by email, but my mom and I wanted you and your sister to know that John passed away on Tuesday. I flew out immediately from Dallas and have been with her since. There are no services now, he was cremated. We will have a tribute to his life at the Magic Castle sometime in January - we are figuring it out now." ------------------------------------------- 3. John Daniels Passed Away -------------------------------------------- Message by Mark Wilson (US) As you may have heard, a wonderful magical friend, John Daniels, passed away only a few days ago. I had met John many years ago, well before we moved to Los Angeles in 1960, and he was the first person Nani and I called when we arrived in town. John was an exceptional professional magician and, at that time, was co-owner of Owen Magic, with Carl Owen. It was John and his associates who built the first new magic illusions we used in the Magical Land of Allakazam . . . Later, one of those illusions was our very first Cutting a Girl In-Two in a Thin Divided, which was quite revolutionary at the time. We still have several of John's illusions in our warehouse. In the last few decades John became an incredible collector of old toys, model trains, carousel horses, and small moving window display signs. I think John would enjoy my telling you about these things, each of which could take up many more of these newsletters. Nani and I send our most sincere condolences to his beautiful wife Cathy. ------------------------------------------- 4. Abb Dickson's Health Deteriorating -------------------------------------------- Message by Gary E Bartlett I just wanted to let you know that Abb Dickson is getting worse. Remarkable Magic. #57 The Linking Finger Rings -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) I have been asked many times if I was ever going to release my version of the Linking Finger Rings. It is a trick that I have featured in my act for 35 years and has been a major source of income as well as a reputation maker for me. I never wanted to do so because my handling is unique and unlike anything else seen in the magic world. Frankly, it has been too darn important to making my living. In fact I have stopped performing this routine if I know magicians are around, except for VERY special occasions. I have not featured my actual handling on any videotapes or DVDs and have shared my secrets with practically no-one. This is in spite of on many occasions being offered big bucks to teach the routine to individuals. My routine has many advantages over other published routines and has been thought out carefully and refined for over three decades. It has opened many doors for me and I hold it in a very special place in my heart. One of my proudest moments was when Dai Vernon told me that if he wanted to perform a magic act professionally the first thing he would do is come to me and offer me whatever I wanted to part up with the routine! I still have the videotape of Dai sitting in the front row of the Parlor in the Castle when he made this statement watching me perform the routine. Jeff McBride said, " I've seen Nick Lewin perform on stage in Las Vegas and can say this.his routine is the most entertaining Linking Finger Ring Routine I have ever had the pleasure to witness." Mac King said, "Nick Lewin's solution for the Himber Ring routine is far and away the best one for any real working magician. If you really want to sell your routine put me first on the list." Billy McComb said, "Nick's routine is far and away the best in the business and is one of the reasons he makes the big bucks!" Well, these are quotes from some of the people I must respect in the business. I got these quotes when I was first dabbling with the idea of sharing the routine. I am now halfway through a truly comprehensive treatise on the trick with a totally detailed description of my handling of my routine. The detail in which I am covering the various key elements is scaring even me! I am holding nothing back in the Book/DVD combination that I am going to market. A large part of the routine is linguistic in its approach, an equally large part is psychological and I am probably revealing more information about 'selling' small magic to large crowds than has ever been assembled in one single source before. I regularly perform this routine for LARGE crowds--up to 2500 people in Performing Arts Centers and have also adapted it so that it can be performed for as few as 40 people. Put the Ring in your pocket and you are ready to go. Not only is the sequence of magic unbelievably strong but the routine is Kick-Ass funny! I am holding back nothing, not a joke, not a move, not one wrinkle and I invite you to use any or all of these in your performance. Many a magician has released a pet routine and then bitterly complained when other performers use it! I am not going to do that--if you buy (I don't mean steal, photocopy or dub!) this routine you will get a signed certificate of ownership. I will also grant a very limited number of certificates that offer full television rights to the routine. As I start my semi-retirement I am not reluctantly but gladly sharing the various routines that have earned me a good living for 40 years. I don't, however, want to give them away 'willy nilly' or to people who are not suitable to perform the routines involved. I am only interested in sharing with performers who will do justice to the items involved. This is only fair to my other clients. Many people have spent fortunes (in my opinion) buying fancy Himber Rings--Gold, Silver, duplicates etc. etc. and 9 times out of 10 times they never use them. It's not the ring that matters--it is the ROUTINE! If I just wanted to make money I would sell you a fancy ring with this package. This is not the case, I will tell you how to buy the right ring at the cheapest price and do any customizing yourself-- if you want to. Personally I use the 40 dollar ring that is the cheapest on the market! If the audience are thinking about the ring then you are doing the trick wrong. I am inviting anyone who is interested in learning this definitive routine, of one of magic's strongest tricks to contact me directly. I want to know who is buying it! I want to be able to personally assist you in making sure you understand and can perform the routine that is taught on the book and DVD. I am only interested in selling it to somebody who wants to do it right. Maybe I'm crazy but that is the only way I want to do business! Trends in Magic - #231 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com There are many trends in the art of magic. They come and go like fashion and the latest craze. However, some trends tend to stick around and others are just alarming in general. When it comes to magical entertainment, the one trend I am noticing more and more is this idea that a magician thinking they can take any gig and any event even if they are not qualified for it. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen, heard and read about magicians taking a gig and then asking for ideas and tips on how to do it. Some go as far as asking for help creating the show itself. When asked when the show is, you get an answer of "oh in a week." These are the same folks who send our business cards and marketing material that states "magic for all occasions." Well folks a magician who does ALL occasions is a magician for NO occasions. The point simply is that you should not try and be a jack of all trades. Businesses succeed because they are based on establishing niche markets and excelling at them. By doing so, they develop brand loyalty. It is easier to target market because they know exactly who their customers are. Customers go to these companies because it is clear to them what they specialize in and exactly what they are getting in return. Establish who you are and define what markets fit you best. More importantly find out who you are not. This is as important to your business as your Unique Selling Proposition (USP). It is OK to know who you are NOT as a performer. More importantly it helps ground you and establishes the markets that BEST fit. So what is it that causes many to think in this fashion? Many think they have to do everything to justify being called an entertainer. Others simply think it is a necessity to "stay alive" in this economy. Both are legit concerns. However, this is not the way to go about it. In fact, the more you head in this direction, the harder it is to grow your business or have any real success in it. Businesses are built around reputation and having the customer know YOU can directly solve and meet their needs time and again. As many know, word of mouth travels fast in this digital age. A great reputation can vanish overnight simply from making a wrong choice that goes against your better judgment and your business model. Why accept a gig if you have never done it before or have no idea how to even start? Thinking you have no choice is not the answer. You DO have a choice and that choice is to simply say no and walk away from anything that does not fit who you are as a performer and what you specialize in. Learn to focus on your strengths and develop your business around these strengths. The more you can develop and define your niche specialty, the easier it becomes to market effectively. If you find yourself having to say yes simply to stay afloat, then perhaps the problem is not the economy at all. Perhaps the problem is you and the way you conduct your business. Many will blame the economy instead of realizing that they are spreading themselves too thin. Refine and define your business as that allows you to better focus on marketing. People will come to you because they know clearly what you stand for. Focusing on what you do best allows you to excel and to always know you give every client 100% every time out. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Blue and Gold! Tony Brook In Conversation With Jon Racherbaumer - Part 7 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: You once told me that having regrets is not necessarily a bad thing .. JR: Well.. I've had, like most, a few regrets. A few. Most of them, however, have been tempered by time. But I always consider things I have not yet done and may never get around to doing. These will become inconsolable, abject "regrets".Sometimes Thoreau's line brightens me: "To regret deeply is to live afresh." ADB: You have vast library of books. You have even referred to yourself as a hoarder so, if someone asked you to recommend 10 magic books or videos, what would they be? JR: The ten books would be: Greater Magic (John North Hilliard), Expert Card Technique (Hugard-Braue), Royal Road To Card Magic (Hugard-Braue), J. B. Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, 13 Steps To Mentalism (Corinda), Dai Vernon Book of Magic (Lewis Ganson), Practical Mental Effect (Ted Annemann), Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic (Martin Gardner), Magic & Meaning (Burger-Neale), and Expert At The Card Table (Erdnase). ADB: We once had a lengthy conversation about effects that fool us and why we should try and avoid performing them . elaborate a little on that please. What advice would you give to someone when they are selecting tricks to perform? JR: I can't tell anyone what effects to perform or not as it is like advising someone about which person to date, woo, and wed. Nevertheless. I usually tell students to mistrust tricks that fool them. Just because something baffles us does not mean it's a great trick or entertaining presentation. Many magician-foolers don't "play" in the real world; instead they fall flat. You must love-really love- performing the tricks you select for your repertoire simply because you'll be performing them over and over, hundreds and hundreds of times. There also must be an aspect in the trick that continually renews your interest or challenges your imagination. The method, after all, seldom changes. Fortunately, the steadfast variable in all performance is the audience. The relationships between you and your audience will always be different. This relationship is the crux. Therefore, select tricks that consistently make your spectators responsive and they perpetually bring you joy. The resultant exuberance, by the way, will be infectious. Your audience will sense it and will be induced to become a part of it. Finally, choose tricks that express your personality, attitude, and point of view. ADB: I'm sure you get asked for advice all the time about what helps to make a good Magician..how do you usually respond ? JR: Read and have as many real-life experiences as you can. Read lots of magic books; however, read other books, as well, and expand your horizons. In short, become a well-rounded, educated person. Study film, theatre, psychology, philosophy, science. In other words, strive for depth. I've seen many students focus on one or two aspects of magic, usually technique. They can expertly perform a gazillion sleights and they know dozens of ways to perform "Triumph," but they don't know how to "entertain" or inspire. Michael Woolf On the Road To Recovery -------------------------------------------- Message by Michael Woolf (NZ) It seems that while on my way to Wellington Hospital for an unrelated scheduled out patient's appointment I suffered some kind of seizure and collapsed immediately outside the hospital building. I believe this was on the morning of Monday 19th September. A crash team of doctors and nurses was on the scene immediately and administered help ... fracturing eight of my ribs and causing collateral damage to my throat with intubation. I was then placed in a chemical coma for 24 hours and then prepared for bypass surgery. I had a sextuple bypass plus carotid work. The very worst part of the whole episode was a terrifying series of hallucinations. I had literally no control over my own reality. The most frightening experience of my life. I want to thank you and all other kind friends who called, sent cards and emails, and have supported me and my family through this ordeal. I hope to be able to express my gratitude in a more personal way when I am stronger. Just now I am most happy to be resting at home in familiar surroundings with my family. I have very little strength and am sleeping a great deal. The surgeons assure me that the procedures were entirely successful and that I can look forward to many more years of productive living. I should be back to my normal self by Christmas. ------------------------------------------- 11. Wanting To Purchase A Jack Hughes Head Zopper -------------------------------------------- Message by Jonathan Levey I am on the look-out for a Jack Hughes Head Zopper for a Christmas show I have coming up in mid-December. If you happen to know anyone that has one, perhaps they are wishing to sell it? Not sure, though that even if I found one that I would receive it in time if they shipped it right out. Even a letter sent by a fellow magician from New Zealand once took "forever". Still, I thought it might be worthwhile finding one, then I could check out faster shipping arrangements. Hocus Pocus just happens to be selling a Head Zopper in an Estate sale, but unfortunately it is missing the hole to place the carrot into above the "victims" head. This carrot hole is essential to me because I believe it helps "sell" the effect --and I have lots of comedic by-play with the carrot.
